A word from Xico
Xico serves vibrant regional Mexican cuisine: classic and inspired dishes, fresh tortillas made from non-GMO corn, farm fresh local produce, sustainable meats, wild fish, and fantastic desserts. We use as many as 20 different chiles at a time to create a menu that will take you and your palate straight to Mexico, from Oaxaca to Michoacan.

The heart of Xico's bar is mezcal; a pit smoked agave spirit laced with smoke and perfect with chiles. Our classic Xico Margarita with fresh squeezed lime is unmatched and is known for being the best in Portland, as reported by the Oregonian.

Xico boasts a wine list carefully selected to pair with the flavors on the menu: Rieslings from Alcase, Germany, Italy and Oregon. The sparkling minerality, terroir and fruit of Italian Lambruschi. And Reds that span the globe.

Diner Reviews
  • "We had a wonderful dinner at Xico. The food was delicious, the ambiance pleasant, and we had really great service. I can't wait to go back."

  • "The chips are all hot and freshly made. the salsas have a nice bite. the drinks are tasty and unusual, with several kinds of mezcal sharing the bill with tequilas. The New York steak was flavorful, but could have been more tender. The rotisserie chicken rubbed with adobo was delicious."

  • "Once again, we enjoyed the terrific menu of innovative dishes with generous servings and a good selection of relatively inexpensive wines. It's probably the best hispanic-related restaurant in Portland. And it's reasonably priced."

  • "Dinner at Xico was amazing! The food was excellent.... so much to choose from. Loved the salsa! The wine was tasty, and the noise level was non-existent.... perfect for conversation. Great service!"

  • "We arrived right at 5 with toddler in tow, and they delivered tortillas immediately and did not blink when said monster decided to sprinkle rice about. Food was also delightful- recommend sopes and beet ceviche."
    Dined on 6/15/2014
  • "We enjoyed xico. The drinks took forever and the service definitely had room for improvement. Flavors were good and interesting. The ceviche was cute way too thin for ceviche and not enough acid. Cute courtyard seating in back. We'll return."

  • "I been searching for a replacement for my beloved Cafe Azul (Pear district) ever since it closed several years ago. I think I've finally found it! The food was great and the wait staff attentive, with just a hint of edginess."

  • "Had a nice dinner with girlfriends. Great food- authentic and imaginative. Enjoyed the fresh chips, guacamole, and homemade tortillas. Vegetables were fresh, all the dinners were very tasty and delicious and flavorful. Cocktails were excellent."

  • "Drinks are very good here! Service was good, food was good but would have been a lot better if it was warm or even hot! We would give it another try!"

  • "Good find in great neighborhood. Semi-casual atmosphere and interesting food with unique tastes. Service was very good, atmosphere was fun and lively but food was a bit overpriced, in my opinion. Would definitely visit again for a special occasion."

  • "Our margarita took over 20 minutes to come even though it was not busy yet. Other than that it was perfect. The employees were very friendly. Food outstanding. "

  • "we had a party of 7 and the head originally booked a party of 6 to be at the restaurant. They were very efficient and helpful in changing the number of guests.however we found the food and especially the drinks overpriced. The quality of the food did not match the expectation of Portland dining. Although they tried very hard the food was OVA spiced and too much fried food even wear it wasn't expected."

  • "The margaritas were outstanding and the Trout amazing. It will be hard to not get the Trout when we return. The Queso Fundido was really good but much smaller than I've had at other places. The fried tortilla chips were delicious. The salsas that came with the order need some work. The red red chile one was super delicious. The green one was rather bland. They both needed to be a lot thicker. We'll be back for the Trout and the margaritas!"

  • "Our waiter was brusque, seemed distracted and not very welcoming. The big problem came with the check. He told us about Margarita Mondays without emphasizing it was only one special $5 Margarita. My eye goes to the least expensive wine on the list which was an $8 Tempranillo. So I ordered a "Tempranillo". The waiter did not clarify which I wanted. When the check came my friends were charged $8 for their not-so-special Margaritas, and I was charged $13 for the other Tempranillo, This would not have happened if the waiter were more engaged with our ordering. He did make adjustments but was not very gracious. He made us feel it was our fault although they were his shortcomings. It ruined an otherwise wonderful evening. Food was delicious!"

  • "4 of my friends and I went for Happy Hour. The tamarind margaritas were very good. The happy hour menu made for a really delicious and affordable night out."

  • "One doesn't necessarily think Mexican for brunch but we had a great dinner at Xico previously so thought it was worth trying. Food was fantastic. Pancakes made with masa gave it the right amount of corn flavor & my carnitas hash had a good amount of heat. The staff was very accommodating given that we had with us our normally-well-behaved 5 year old suddenly got a case of the goofiness. We will definitely be back for both brunch & dinner."

  • "The restaurant was nice. The waiter was somewhat odd but service was OK. Food was good but overpriced for what you get."

  • "I've been for brunch and dinner now and enjoyed myself on all occasions. The margaritas are excellent, service was good and not too crowded both times I've been for Sunday brunch. "

  • "We've been here twice now and have had consistently good experiences. The interior is wonderful - it's warm, eccentric, casual, but not cute. The service is attentive and professional. And the food - well, the food is extraordinary. Between myself and my table mates, we haven't ordered a clunker yet. The ingredients are fresh, imaginatively prepared, the tastes are layered and surprising. Calling it " Mexican food" might not be a fair description, as Xico really explores the different regions and comes up with their own interpretation that works brilliantly. "

  • "We have been here a few times now and although it is not the most amazing food or service, we never have had to wait to get a table and the food and drinks are tasty. Only minor issue with this visit was the missing items with our meal. They brought the wrong order of chips but corrected it once I mentioned it then they brought the main meal which also was missing two items (beans and tortillas). Overall the food was tasty...I have the rock fish with white mole and my husband had the chicken dish. Margaritas were yummy!"

  • "This is our third time to Xico's....we will keep coming back for the Oaxacan moles and flavors....THE BEST margaritas in PTown!"

  • "Nice neighborhood spot , not your traditional taco and enchilada joint. I'd go with new age, Central American influenced bistro. The pork plate entree lacked the real flavor a good chile verde would possess but the trout posole was delicious. Only Y and Z left before we start the alphabet again."
    Dined on 4/9/2014
  • "Fresh, delicious and beautifully presented. What more could you ask for? I love the Trout Posole. It is such a satisfying combination of flavors. I've had it at least twice and can't really consider anything else when I look at the menu. My friend had the sole and it was also perfectly prepared and presented."

  • "I rarely enjoy a first visit as much as I did this meal. The service was fantastic, knowledgeable knowing the spices in the food & able to describe and suggest dishes. The room is fun and energetic but we were still able to have a conversation. I loved the Trout Pozole, it's boneless (to my surprise) pan roasted & served over orange & ancho chile seafood broth, amazing! I can't wait to go back, especially when the weather breaks so that I can sit outside on the back patio."

  • "The food was simple and good, but slightly under spiced. Many reviwers raved about the food, but it was not really memorable. Loved the ambiance, nice spot to dine. My tamarind margarita was very tasty, but small."

  • "In December 2013, we tried it on a recommendation from Portland Monthly Best Restaurants 2013 issue primarily for dessert. Had dinner on a very quiet night. Service was extremely slow. Took 45 min and a couple of reminders to get dinner on the table. Drinks were good but not worth the price. I had the beef barbacoa. Beef was unevenly tender and tough. Dessert was awesome though. Mindy's Woodblock Chocolate Cake and Mexican Candy Plate are not to be missed! (Thank you Mindy Keith) I hope they improve service at the least. But definitely worth a trip for dessert."

  • "Our gathering choice a variety of dishes & shared all around. I love tamales & Xico's were great, loved the balance of filling to Mesa. We had one vegetarian with us & he found great dishes! No greasy food here :-) Great flavors of entrees & sauces! The drinks were very tasty. Wait staff was very attentive & enjoyable. A great time was had by all. They do have an outdoor area. Would love to come back in warmer weather & try that out!"

  • "This was my second time dining at Xico - both times the food was excellent and both times the service was passable. We were a party of 6 and all partook of one of the 3 course Diners month menu, and everyone was very pleased with their food. Great presentation, taste, and portion size. Service was spotty and not very attentive, food was prompt and delivered hot, but after delivery the servers disappeared until the next course was due. I asked for hot sauce, server said he would bring me salsa, he dropped off a small dish of some watery green substance that wasn't hot or even spicy and never returned to check on our meal. Drinks are expensive, selection is limited, more wine & beer choices would entice to dine there more frequently."

  • "This place is full of good surprises. Excellent drinks, wonderful food -- try the trout posole. Relaxed but attentive service. Go there."

  • "This is a neighborhood restaurant that we had not tried yet. And we have heard rave reviews from the neighbors… We went as one of the Portland Dining Month to explore and had high hopes since we cook ourselves and love the influences that have come up from Mexico. The margarita Classico was fabulous! The best piece we had this night was the chips and salsa style nachos. Yummy - flavorful salsa with a little heat off set by the cilantro and crema! Dessert lovely. We wondered if the dining month menu was tamed to agree with more folks who might not dine out much. Will the regular menu be more in keeping with what we know of the cuisine of Puebla and Oaxaca? Atmosphere is fun and the staff was lovely."

  • "Enjoyed the visit very much. Had the March $29 specials and food was excellent, service and experience very pleasant."

  • "Came for dining month with a group of friends and loved the food. It might've been a tad over-priced, but from a flavor profile, found it wonderful. Dreamt about the chocolate bread pudding and inspired to make my own masa concoctions at home. The only pitfall is that while our servers were lovely and smiley, the thoroughness and attention to detail left us a bit wanting: Several in our party wanted additional drinks over the course of the evening, but our server came and went like the night, barely pausing long enough to really check in and listen. Ditto for clearing the table. This, understandably, led us to being a bit grumpy about an automatic 20% gratuity add-on. It feels a bit greedy; do 18%, and I might bump it up myself to 20%."

  • "I've eaten dinner at Xico twice now, and both times the food was creative and delicious. Good margaritas too (I'm a margarita snob). You won't find traditional uninspired Americanized (lots of sour cream and canned salsa) Mexican food here, so if that's your style you probably won't enjoy it. Instead you'll get creative tasty appetizers and entrees. Last time I had the Estofado de Carne which was absolutely delicious."

  • "I had heard a lot about Xico from friends who had gone there. I found the Restaurant Month menu (salmon, etc.) to be relatively lackluster."
