A word from Xico
Xico serves vibrant regional Mexican cuisine: classic and inspired dishes, fresh tortillas made from non-GMO corn, farm fresh local produce, sustainable meats, wild fish, and fantastic desserts. We use as many as 20 different chiles at a time to create a menu that will take you and your palate straight to Mexico, from Oaxaca to Michoacan.

The heart of Xico's bar is mezcal; a pit smoked agave spirit laced with smoke and perfect with chiles. Our classic Xico Margarita with fresh squeezed lime is unmatched and is known for being the best in Portland, as reported by the Oregonian.

Xico boasts a wine list carefully selected to pair with the flavors on the menu: Rieslings from Alcase, Germany, Italy and Oregon. The sparkling minerality, terroir and fruit of Italian Lambruschi. And Reds that span the globe.

  • "I rarely enjoy a first visit as much as I did this meal. The service was fantastic, knowledgeable knowing the spices in the food & able to describe and suggest dishes. The room is fun and energetic but we were still able to have a conversation. I loved the Trout Pozole, it's boneless (to my surprise) pan roasted & served over orange & ancho chile seafood broth, amazing! I can't wait to go back, especially when the weather breaks so that I can sit outside on the back patio."

  • "In December 2013, we tried it on a recommendation from Portland Monthly Best Restaurants 2013 issue primarily for dessert. Had dinner on a very quiet night. Service was extremely slow. Took 45 min and a couple of reminders to get dinner on the table. Drinks were good but not worth the price. I had the beef barbacoa. Beef was unevenly tender and tough. Dessert was awesome though. Mindy's Woodblock Chocolate Cake and Mexican Candy Plate are not to be missed! (Thank you Mindy Keith) I hope they improve service at the least. But definitely worth a trip for dessert."

  • "Our gathering choice a variety of dishes & shared all around. I love tamales & Xico's were great, loved the balance of filling to Mesa. We had one vegetarian with us & he found great dishes! No greasy food here :-) Great flavors of entrees & sauces! The drinks were very tasty. Wait staff was very attentive & enjoyable. A great time was had by all. They do have an outdoor area. Would love to come back in warmer weather & try that out!"

  • "This was my second time dining at Xico - both times the food was excellent and both times the service was passable. We were a party of 6 and all partook of one of the 3 course Diners month menu, and everyone was very pleased with their food. Great presentation, taste, and portion size. Service was spotty and not very attentive, food was prompt and delivered hot, but after delivery the servers disappeared until the next course was due. I asked for hot sauce, server said he would bring me salsa, he dropped off a small dish of some watery green substance that wasn't hot or even spicy and never returned to check on our meal. Drinks are expensive, selection is limited, more wine & beer choices would entice to dine there more frequently."

  • "This is a neighborhood restaurant that we had not tried yet. And we have heard rave reviews from the neighbors… We went as one of the Portland Dining Month to explore and had high hopes since we cook ourselves and love the influences that have come up from Mexico. The margarita Classico was fabulous! The best piece we had this night was the chips and salsa style nachos. Yummy - flavorful salsa with a little heat off set by the cilantro and crema! Dessert lovely. We wondered if the dining month menu was tamed to agree with more folks who might not dine out much. Will the regular menu be more in keeping with what we know of the cuisine of Puebla and Oaxaca? Atmosphere is fun and the staff was lovely."

  • "Came for dining month with a group of friends and loved the food. It might've been a tad over-priced, but from a flavor profile, found it wonderful. Dreamt about the chocolate bread pudding and inspired to make my own masa concoctions at home. The only pitfall is that while our servers were lovely and smiley, the thoroughness and attention to detail left us a bit wanting: Several in our party wanted additional drinks over the course of the evening, but our server came and went like the night, barely pausing long enough to really check in and listen. Ditto for clearing the table. This, understandably, led us to being a bit grumpy about an automatic 20% gratuity add-on. It feels a bit greedy; do 18%, and I might bump it up myself to 20%."

  • "I've eaten dinner at Xico twice now, and both times the food was creative and delicious. Good margaritas too (I'm a margarita snob). You won't find traditional uninspired Americanized (lots of sour cream and canned salsa) Mexican food here, so if that's your style you probably won't enjoy it. Instead you'll get creative tasty appetizers and entrees. Last time I had the Estofado de Carne which was absolutely delicious."

  • "Made reservation by clicking link from Portland Dining Month website. Result was being denied OpenTable points. Not a cool first impression. Were seated immediately, waiter (middle aged male, balding, small salt/pepper beard) came, we weren't ready to order drinks, he didn't return for 15 minutes. Although we ordered dinner/glasses of wine at the same time, we didn't get our wine until well after being done with our first course. Who does that without offering comp app or dessert? After we finished dessert, 15 minutes passed. Had to get attention of another server who was kind enough to bring the check and also pick up payment. Our server was too busy to bother much with us. Food was fantastic, will definitely return, avoiding this server."

  • "This isn't your average taco place, so if you want basic Mexican food, go elsewhere. This is high end, good quality, creative presentations, and features foods inspired from Oaxaca, Veracruz and Michoacan. Dinner for three was $100, but it was very good and interesting - tamales with green mole, ceviche with beets, apples and habanero peppers, Meximisu (a take on tiramisu), horchata, sopapillas, smoked chicken with mole. Even the chips are thicker, to stand up to great guacamole. The décor is clean, bright, kind of Danish modern meets contemporary retro, if that makes sense. And the service providers took their time with us, although we could have used a water refill (habaneros, remember) before we finally asked for it as the bill came."

Food was less than expected, and the long wait for it did not help. The overall experience was lack luster. I would stop by again for a drink and appetizer if I wanted a good selection of tequila, though."

  • "Above average but not stellar preparation of authentic Mexican which is a vast departure from Tex-Mex microwaved food that usually passes for Mexican food in the USA. But the kitchen served not caramelized but burnt pineapple slices atop the single pork chop. Unwary diners might have eaten the carbonized (yes, carbon causes cancer) underside of the pineapple. The kitchen served the pineapple slices unburnt side up. Had I not turned it over because even the unburnt side looked too burnt to serve, I would have eaten pure carbon. Who does such a thing? Why wouldn't they take the time to discard something so inedible and grill up two more pieces? Who is or isn't supervising the cooks to ensure this isn't a regular occurrence? Be careful."

  • "We chose to hit Xico after some research both online and in Portland Monthly. Made reservations to ensure all was good. The place was packed -- always a good sign, table was ready after we had ordered really nice margaritas from the bar. Menu was definitely full of some gems and certainly unique flavor combinations, our shared app was delicious, main course and flan was excellent -- service was a little slow -- probably due to 7:15 volume or kitchen back-up, but was prepped, cooked and presented deliciously but it was about an hour after we had arrived which to us was about 15 minutes later than ideal. Would definitely return."

The food is off the charts delicious, and inventive. The selection of Mezcals is impressive, and although cocktails are creative, they're awkward. The habanero salsa is the best I've had.   • "Amongst the many good restaurants on SE Division Street Xico stands out as experience in eclectic Mexican cuisine. Mondays are margarita Mondays, at $5.00 per drink and the margaritas are excellent. Amongst the appetizer selection the Sopaipillas are feathery light and task. Totopos con chile is another well made appetizer home made tortilla chips tossed with a chile arbol salsa and cotija cheese is worth trying. For entree we tried Lamb baracoa gorditas and Scallops in mole. Both dishes were excellent, Esp. the mole sauce with the scallops. This is a restaurant worth dining at."

  • "We really enjoyed our meal there. The plates are presented with an artistic touch and are very tasty. They have an ambitious menu which changes almost daily. And they make their own tortillas-non GMO. We had the queso fundido, and crab and shrimp tostado with tortillas. They were both delicious and nicely garnished appetizers. I had the trout pozole, which is a signature dish. The trout was lightly dusted with cornmeal and garnished with avocado, watercress, and placed over the pozole with ancho chile broth. It was lightly spiced and the hominy was fresh tasting. Others in the group had the "tablecloth stainer" mole with chicken garnished with pineapple, beef carne asada, and fresh masa cakes stuffed with shredded pork."

  • "We ate at Xico New Years eve with our two daughters expecting a festive and enjoyable meal. Instead, our meals, including the two ordered from the regular menu seemed precooked, rewarmed and tepid. The place was noisy, which I guess is understandable, and the service was rushed and thoughtless. We were given our check way before our meal was over and felt rushed the entire time we were there. Not a good way to start the new year. We have eaten at Xico before and had much better experiences. We won't go back."
