  • "Sad, I've always looked forwarded to my trips to Napa with a stop at CIA, this was the most disappointing dinner I had this visit. Disappointed not got the the food or service, but the venue. It was increadbly HOT in the dinning room I nor my wife could finish our meals ( and they were delicious)...the sweat being perfused by the guest in the room could have offset the California water shortage. Cool down the dinning room!"

  • "My wife and I were really looking forward to the experience, but were disappointed. It was a Wednesday evening before Labor Day and the restaurant was a bit slow. The highlight was the outdoor dining area with great views of the Napa Valley. However, the server was very nice, however the overall service and food quality wasn't what we expected. Our salad/soups were delivered quickly, but then we had a very long wait for our entrees and the entrees were cold."

  • "I think it's rude to automatically add a 17% gratuity for a single diner. For a Party of 4 or more perhaps, it's okay. The policy statement indicates that it's for chef whites and cap and gowns for the graduates. It also indicates for activities. Excuse me, but when I went to college, I had to pay for my cap and gown, whether I graduated on stage or graduated in absentia. It is more appropriate, I think, to have suggestion boxes where the diner has a choice between 15 % , and a check off box for 20 %."

  • "The food is amazing. Everything ordered at our table was wonderful and cooked perfectly. I had the roasted chicken and have never tasted a chicken this good before. I mean, it's chicken, right? I've had chicken tons of places and nothing compares to how tender, perfectly flavored and paired with farro this chicken dish was! I ate everything on my plate as did everyone I was with. The portions are just right. We made reservations to visit the restaurant on our vacation to Napa and I am glad we didn't miss it! I am still dreaming of the chicken ...."

  • "Dining at the Culinary Institute is a unique experience. Beautiful setting in an old winery formerly occupied by the Christian Brothers. But besides the ambience, the food is good, too. Well prepared and nicely served by the students. My wife's petrale sole was particularly good. One should experience if you have time while in the Napa Valley."

  • "I have always wanted to eat the Greystone Restaurant at the Culinary Institute of America. It was everything I had hoped for. The food, the service, the ambiance all wonderful. My husband's chicken however, was a too salty for his tastes. I had corn soup, sole and Pavlova for dessert - all wonderful and perfectly prepared and presentation. I highly recommend it. I had forgotten my gift certificate at home and had my daughter take a picture of it. They honored it without any hesitation."

  • "What a SHAME! We've been to this restaurant before, & we liked it that's why we keep on coming back BUT, this time they have the WORST food in the entire Napa Valley!! The beef loin was tough, tasteless, burned & worst of all...the meat was not even FRESH (both my husband & my plates too)! We will never go back nor recommend CIA to our friends! Service was bad too, our wine glass is always empty, server don't come around. Gave us the bill WITHOUT asking us for dessert..OMG!"

  • "Neat experience to visit the C.I.A. in Napa Valley. The restaurant is run by current students who are nearing the end of their 21 month training. Half the class runs the kitchen while half runs the front of the house. Our waiter had already spent his 6 weeks in the kitchen and was in his 3rd week of serving. He forgot my wine and came off as a novice server, but was very accommodating and took the wine off of our bill. He filled us in on the program and explained his inexperience with serving, but was very pleasant and added to the fun of the experience. The food was mostly great with the exception of my salmon being a bit undercooked, which they corrected quickly. We enjoyed the food and the experience and would definitely go back."

  • "We had a party of 5 and there was menu selections for everyone. The food was great but the service was lacking. Our waiter completely forgot one order and also missed a dessert order. Their fish entrees were outstanding, well prepared and nicely plated. I would have liked to see a few more choices on the menu for lunch. Overall a very nice experience."

  • "Food very average . Waiter forgot to offer desserts so we we went straight to coffee where the choice was simply caffeinated or decaf. A lot of staff but seemed to lack attention to any detail. Appreciate they are students but did not get a feeling of energy or dynamism"

  • "The philosophy seems to be to impose flavors and unnecessarily complicate the food. The padrone peppers were cooked to perfection, but instead of a simple great sea salt, had a Greek spice mixture that overpowered. The minestrone had grilled portabello mushrooms and pesto--again too much. The grilled salmon, which was excellent, was paired with potatoes with barbecue sauce, which was truly bizarre. My table mate and I stopped at that point, before potentially suffering further unwelcome surprises on the dessert menu. A teaching institution with this reputation should concentrate on three ingredients, maximum per dish, unless absolutely necessary, and celebrating the beauty of natural food flavors, not masking or obscuring them."

  • "The CIA is a great establishment. I've always had a great meal there. The café and access to the bookstore has enhanced that experience. I was a bit disappointed to find out the permanent staff had been laid off and the CIA only operates during term. Its the bottom line approach that airlines use and that means if we come out in November the CIA probably wont be an option. Another aspect of the new management style is less seats so be warned..its harder to get a seat so book early."

  • "i had the polenta and lamb ribs, the waitress could not explain the dish properly, i had asked was there a bigger piece of lamb with the ribs or was it just small piece of rib, she answered yes, she also never ask us how our meal was, we both left half the food on our plate. its over prices and not a 'foodie' place to go."

  • "To personally honor their service to the Lake County community, we treated our friends Lou and Caroline to dinner at CIA Greystone Saturday night July 19th. We had treated our son and a family friend to dinner at Greystone once before and knew Lou and Caroline would enjoy the food and atmosphere. I had the braised lamb ribs, my wife had the steak, and both Lou and Caroline had the Petrale sole. We all enjoyed our entrees and enjoyed watching our friends eat theirs with gusto. We chose to share two desserts, coconut tapioca with mango sorbet, and reveled in the flavor and textures. Lou and I each had a glass of white with our entrees that complemented dinner. Once again, Greystone delivered flawlessly with great food and service."

  • "We went here for lunch on a visit to Napa. We had a reservation so were seated quickly in there spacious dining room. They made a mistake making my daughter's meal and they were falling over themselves apologizing for having us wait longer than expected. They gave us a free glass of wine and appetizer to compensate. We didn't ask for any of it or complain, they just did it on their own. My only complaint would be that the dining room was very hot, but we still had a wonderful time. I would definitely recommend Greystone for a special occasion."

  • "Despite having reservations and the resterant empty we had to wait 20 minutes for table. I ordered an appetizer of muscles which was average. My husband ordered a steal sandwhich which was so tough I thought I would choke having a bite. We sent it back and were not charged for it but didn't want any replacement. Waiter was great. This resterant used to be great but not now. Will never go back."

  • "I struck the jackpot in my three course choices with the Red and Green Garden Salad, the Mushroom Ravioli, and the amazing Coconut Tapioca. I couldn't have asked for a more delicious lunch but do think it was a bit overpriced considering the personnel are all students now. You'd think they could pass along the savings a bit more."

  • "My initial visit to the Culinary Institute was in December of 2013 while I was out visiting my sons and grandchildren over the Christmas holidays. My eldest had previously attended a wedding & reception there, and raved about the experience. I drove up from Los Gatos, salivating almost the entire way, only to discover that the restaurants were closed for the holidays. Having returned to the Bay Area I wasted no time in once again hitting the road to sample for myself what had been described to me as a "dining event" rather than a good meal. At this point I'm afraid that there aren't words to describe either the food, the hospitality, the presentation and the excellent wait staff. To paraphrase your former governor......I'LL BE BACK."

  • "the food was very good but their dessert menu was less than inspired. Frankly, the CIA should be ashamed for the dessert menu they put forward. All chefs should know how to make a good dessert... and not the standard items you usually see... creme brulee, chocolate lava cake etc... Also, we went in July and it was not that hot outside but the restaurant was very warm and kind of spoiled the experiance. I know it is an old building but figure it out."

  • "We arrived early for our 2 PM reservation. Wine ordered at the bar while waiting for our table was not what we ordered and more expensive when we checked our bill. Our server tried hard but there was a language issue, one of the two meals was quite cool, the food was otherwise excellent though the service was very slow. Other tables around us, seated sometime after us had finished their meal (one meal was sent back) and the people were leaving when our meal arrived. All in all not quite what we expected for the price. Even considering the somewhat cold food of one meal, the food was excellent but rates only good in number one above as a part of the dining experience."

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Greystone. Talking with the students, who comprise the wait staff, was unique and enjoyable, and it is now an entirely student run restaurant (under supervision of the teachers), so the delicious meal was cooked by the students as well. The menu is a bit limited, as they are all still in learning mode, but there was enough for my husband and I to choose from. We had a delicious garden salad, I loved my raviolo (although I ate it without the mushroom brodo sauce), he loved the salmon, and we shared a wonderful slow baked chocolate mousse. The presentation of the food is lovely, and I would suggest that as long as you like at least one entree on the menu (see the website), you will have a wonderful dinner."

  • "Given that this is an institute of culinary learning one would think that they would seek feedback on the meals, presentation and performance. The staff were delightful with meal presentation artful. We both had the salmon filet salad with the salmon prepared medium rare which was off putting. We asked to have the salmon prepared well done and returned it to the kitchen. They returned, apologized, and gave us a new salad still prepared medium rare. We ate the cooked portions of the salmon and greens, and enjoyed an excellent merlot. They would benefit from surveying their customers on site, plus understand that all tastes are not alike, especially when it comes to eating raw salmon."

Myself and my significant other had a romantic evening and what a great way to end a beautiful day after wine tasting all day in St. Helena. The food was delicious. Served and arranged beautifully. I am an vegetarian - had plenty to choose from and ordered the salmon. Perfectly cooked. Our server was polite and helpful. Got additional help from a wine expert when we had additional questions about the wines. Would for sure go back. Loved the ambience."
