A word from Waypoint Public
North Park's newest neighborhood bistro & beer bar. Chef Amanda Baumgarten has crafted an "eclectic California neighborhood bistro menu" that includes three types of house made terrines, two riffs on a burger, seafood (charred octopus, fried oyster tacos), Sous vide Chicken and surf & turf (mussels and pork belly).

Brian Jensen (Bottlecraft) provides beer pairing suggestions for each dish and is curating the bar's 30 taps; he's also assembled a beer list that exceeds 300 bottles.

Waypoint is family-friendly with a kids play area.

  • "When we first got there the waitstaff was all over us but as soon as we ordered drinks it felt like we were ignored. Great beer selection but the menu is just alright. I had the paparadelle on the waiter's recommendation and it was so salty I could only eat half. My friends' food was good they said but the salad was tiny! The food is too expensive for what it is. The dessert as good though, the smorelaska."

  • "Two friends of mine and I visited Waypoint Public on a Thursday night. Quite frankly we were neither wowed by the food or the noise level. The place is so loud that we decided only to have a drink and entree and run out since it was so hard to hear each other and we were supposedly seated in the quiet area of the restaurant. In reality there is no quiet area, but it is a great place for kids since they have a big screen and a kid's area. The menu is all over the place and not cohesive - I would not say it is a place for foodies, but a local hangout. I wish them luck but so hope that they could consider doing something for the sound level ..."

  • "Wonderful food--inventive yet not foo-foo, delicious, indulgent, yet not unpleasantly heavy. The Waypoint burger, BLT deviled eggs, and the fried oyster Po Boy are all crazy good. Service is solid. The NOISE LEVEL!!!! is unpleasant, so try to go off-peak."

  • "We went here with several families for a special brunch. The staff treated everyone, especially the kids, with great care and attention. The food was very good, but the desserts were the show stoppers! Everyone had a wonderful experience and all will return!"

  • "I wasn't sure what to expect on my first time here since the Linkery left and they do quite a nice job here! The food is solid as I hoped with Chef Amanda. The beer selection was quite nice for sure. However it is nice to do flights of small amounts of beer rather than only offer pints and 10oz servings. The kids play area was quite a cool feature since my wife and I have 2 under 2. Maybe we'll make it back here sometime. Casual with great food without being pretentious."

  • "I was a big fan of the Linkery, but Waypoint Public has surpassed them in almost every aspect. There beer list is much more balanced toward a range of styles also some not so easy to find on tap beers (Jolly Pumpkin). The food was great. And probably our favorite part was the kid play area. Because of that area, we will definitely be back."

  • "I want to love Waypoint Public. Great location, menu, beer & wine list and ambiance. Unfortunately, the terrible table service undoes all the good this place has to offer. After a terrible first experience we gave this place another chance but it was even worse. At 5:15 pm on a Sunday evening it took 45 minutes to get our food. 45! with 3 kids at the table. No apologies no nothing. When the food did arrive the halibut was dry and lackluster, the flat iron steak was unamazing. I'll be back only to sit at the bar - the service there was stellar. C'mon Waypoint - you can do better!"

  • "It took me a while to get around to eating at Waypoint Public and now I wish I'd gone sooner. Lunch was excellent from start to finish. Highlight of the meal was the Sangria. Easily the best glass in town. Time to start thinking about making a return trip for dinner."

  • "This restaurant has steadily gained popularity in North Park for great beer selection and awesome indoor kid play area. The food selection has changed since it first opened and become more meaty, with only two entree options for vegetarians. Neither of these are vegan. There are no indicators on the menu to show ingredient flexibility. I am vegetarian with a dairy allergy and gluten sensitivity, which I told the waiter about when ordering. I ordered a vegetable entree and requested it NOT be made with butter. The dish came out soaked in butter! They made it again, and he apologized and did not charge me for it. However the lack of kitchen-control is concerning and I would NOT recommend it to vegans or those with food allergies."

  • "Very open on nice days (i.e. most days). Nice play area for kids that they enjoy. Excellent selection of craft beers and good food overall. We had a party of 8 and one meal was steak was not satisfactory, but they took care of it promptly. Definitely going back here. "

  • "Our group of four had a good time and enjoyed the food and open air atmosphere. Unfortunately a server spilled an entire ginger beer in my wife's lap and made little to no effort to clean it up, didn't apologize, didn't replace the spilled drink, and kept the drink on the bill. At the end of the meal the server apologized for not being attentive but that hardly covered the spilled drink situation."

  • "Really enjoyed our lunch on Saturday. We were 12 people and ordered a variety of items, everyone was happy with their selection. Our waitress was great, she went above and beyond to provide great service. Very impressive beer selection and drinks list."

  • "Generous wine pouring and nice wine list, sandwich came out burnt, but they did take it off the bill, very noisy - but there's a play area for kids, so i suppose if you are a family used to noisy life, this place is good because you can put the kids in the play area. There is a private room in back that is quiet but it requires booking. If only we could have dined there..i would have had a better impression of this popular neighborhood spot! "

  • "Excellent food, decor, ambiance, service, beer...highly recommend the oyster po boy tacos, favorite thing on the menu. Also, fresh papparedelle, the burger and grilled cheese were awesome. Beer selection is of course top noth as with most spots in SD these days but the food is a step up from most. Definitely check it out. There is a kid play area as well so it's suitable for the bar crowd and the family crowd."

  • "The food was fantastic. Mussels were great. Deviled eggs were done really well, with a nice kick of spice. Great beer selection as well. Kids area is very cool and the movies are a nice touch. Biggest problem was the noise level. It's loud in general because of the high ceilings and a lot of guests, plus loud music. It was tough to hear each other talking and it was too loud for the kids. "

  • "Had an excellent night at Waypoint with friends in from out of town. The food was terrific. We started with a pretzel and then had a few octopus salads and the beet salad with pork belly, all of which were great. We then had the mussels and the halibut for our mains and everyone cleaned their plates. The S'morelaska dessert was a huge hit. Service was great and as always the killer beer list made for a good time."

  • "My new fav! Awesome food. Duck confit Pappardelle deserves a Michelin star. Better save room for the S'morelaska or you'll be sorry. I'm not a beer drinker BUT clearly it's the thing to do here. Really on the noisy side but so much fun."

  • "Wonderful recent visit to Waypoint! We went for our husband's birthday with our 1 year old (which always is challenging!) Everyone was very accommodating - waitress was great! Food and drink did take a little longer than usual to get to our table but when the food arrived we forgot about the wait ;) We split the burger and the grilled cheese! Both were delicious!!!!! They have a kids area which was great for our little guy when he needed some place to stretch his legs and get some energy out. We are planning on going back soon and bringing friends! "

  • "We had a fundraiser event at Waypoint Public and they were great about it. They accommodated our large group and provided separate bills for the occasion, which was really helpful. Their food is awesome, roasted peppers, pretzel, kale salad, burger, all delicious. Definitely a great place to check out."

  • "Enjoyed Waypoint Public very much. Hipster center of North Park, loud and lively, but nice open air atmosphere. Food is bar-themed, with a great beer list and also good cider and wine selections. Enjoyed: pretzel appetizer, ceviche (texture not super but flavors good), albacore entree with fresh "creamed" greens (very tasty and healthy, could have been larger portion, maybe an innovative starch on plate or more albacore), steak dish over pretzel dumpling, dill pickles. Look forward to trying more next time. Packed solid at 6 pm!"

  • "Had a fantastic evening with a collaboration of local chefs coming together for a good cause. Kudos to chef Amanda for hosting and convincing a friend that she actually DOES like lamb! A special menu for the evening, but every dish was phenomenal and the service staff stepped up. Great spot with the open slide windows allowing a little breeze to cool off the warm evening. Definitely a neighborhood gem in North Park. "

  • "We were told this was a good kid-friendly place. Not so much. They have a little play area but it is in the back so I couldn't see my child from the table. It was really loud; I realize this is personal preference, but I do not like having to scream at my husband when he is literally inches from me. The food was good. "

  • "We had the blistered peppers, ceviche, nuts to start....all very good. I asked my waiter for help with the very large beer list....he gave me the perfect selection. I couldn't decide between salads, again waiter helped me decide.... I never would have picked the octopus salad but he said it was the best and AGAIN he was right on! "

  • "We went on a Sunday night when the restaurant was moderately busy. The food was fine, but the portions were small. However, my biggest complaint is with the service. It took 50 minutes to bring out the sausage, a fish dish (which my wife said was mediocre), and two kids mac and cheeses. In that time, the waitress checked on us once. "

  • "What a nice surprise Waypoint Public is! From the moment we arrived we felt welcomed! Our waitress was terrific. She had a great sense of humor and was an excellent server. Wished I could remember her name (raspy voice...) The place was full and quite energetic. So if you are looking for a quiet place for a serious conversation, this may not be the place. The star of the night of course was the food! Yum!!! I highly recommend the ceviche as it was incredible. We couldn't stop raving about the Po Boy Oyster tacos which are a must and the burger is one of a kind. We made reservations which I recommend but it looked like there were a lot of guests that just stopped by."

  • "Excellent work -- great food, generous portions and super service -- the octopus, burger and clams were delicious! The pork belly in the clams may be a bit excessive but it's pork belly so one can't complain!"

  • "Good food. Brunch menu was pretty good. Does not go to a dinner menu till 2pm. Tacos were excellent. Burgers were good. My wife and her mom split the gem salad and another entree. Good Helle Lager."

  • "The design of the restaurant (all hard services) makes the sound reverberate off the walls of glass. Good place if you want to be part of the crowd and enjoy some good food, but not if you want to actually the hear the person you're with."

  • "Personally, I was more impressed by the expansive tap and bottle list than the food. Don't get me wrong, the food was pretty good, but it was kind of foreshadowed by the amazing beer list. Our server, who I think was named Nicole, was awesome. I also appreciated that this restaurant is family-friendly, even though I did not bring my children."

  • "The food was creative, varied, and extremely tasty. Top brunch dish is the corned beef; the po' boy tacos are also delicious but the portion size may leave you wanting."

  • "Went there with my wife and four friends after hearing great things from others. Eclectic, mostly local (SoCal region) tap list of 30 brews paired up with an equally eclectic menu (atypical ingredient combos you know will work, innovative twists on downhome comfort foods, etc.). Better atmosphere than The Linkery (previous occupant), more open, airy, and relaxed. Food is a little on the steep side of the price scale, but not at all outrageous for the freshness, flavor combos, and quality (the presentation is nice too, but pretty food doesn't factor in a whole lot for me.) A return trip is pretty much a given for me, since I have so much more to try out."

  • "I really loved the atmosphere and ambience of Waypoint. Our server was great! He was very friendly and made sure we were receiving great customer service. I rather enjoy people watching, So this place receives an A++. Great eye candy!! If you want to see diversity and different strokes then this is the place. One thing I also found fascinating was the little play area for children. That was very different and quite innovative if you ask me. Have not seen anything like it around. I had the waypoint burger and the S'morelaska dessert. No kidding the S'morelaska is to die for! The Waypoint burger is delicious and I couldn't have been happier. Absolutely rocked my socks. Can't wait to come back for Brunch. I love me some Breaky!"
