A word from Waypoint Public
North Park's newest neighborhood bistro & beer bar. Chef Amanda Baumgarten has crafted an "eclectic California neighborhood bistro menu" that includes three types of house made terrines, two riffs on a burger, seafood (charred octopus, fried oyster tacos), Sous vide Chicken and surf & turf (mussels and pork belly).

Brian Jensen (Bottlecraft) provides beer pairing suggestions for each dish and is curating the bar's 30 taps; he's also assembled a beer list that exceeds 300 bottles.

Waypoint is family-friendly with a kids play area.

  • "Good food. Brunch menu was pretty good. Does not go to a dinner menu till 2pm. Tacos were excellent. Burgers were good. My wife and her mom split the gem salad and another entree. Good Helle Lager."

  • "The design of the restaurant (all hard services) makes the sound reverberate off the walls of glass. Good place if you want to be part of the crowd and enjoy some good food, but not if you want to actually the hear the person you're with."

  • "Personally, I was more impressed by the expansive tap and bottle list than the food. Don't get me wrong, the food was pretty good, but it was kind of foreshadowed by the amazing beer list. Our server, who I think was named Nicole, was awesome. I also appreciated that this restaurant is family-friendly, even though I did not bring my children."

  • "The food was creative, varied, and extremely tasty. Top brunch dish is the corned beef; the po' boy tacos are also delicious but the portion size may leave you wanting."

  • "Went there with my wife and four friends after hearing great things from others. Eclectic, mostly local (SoCal region) tap list of 30 brews paired up with an equally eclectic menu (atypical ingredient combos you know will work, innovative twists on downhome comfort foods, etc.). Better atmosphere than The Linkery (previous occupant), more open, airy, and relaxed. Food is a little on the steep side of the price scale, but not at all outrageous for the freshness, flavor combos, and quality (the presentation is nice too, but pretty food doesn't factor in a whole lot for me.) A return trip is pretty much a given for me, since I have so much more to try out."

  • "I really loved the atmosphere and ambience of Waypoint. Our server was great! He was very friendly and made sure we were receiving great customer service. I rather enjoy people watching, So this place receives an A++. Great eye candy!! If you want to see diversity and different strokes then this is the place. One thing I also found fascinating was the little play area for children. That was very different and quite innovative if you ask me. Have not seen anything like it around. I had the waypoint burger and the S'morelaska dessert. No kidding the S'morelaska is to die for! The Waypoint burger is delicious and I couldn't have been happier. Absolutely rocked my socks. Can't wait to come back for Brunch. I love me some Breaky!"

  • "We were excited to try WP. The menu was creative, but service was slow and frenzied. Wrong charge on the trout. Interior decor was cool, but place was noisy beyond what is comfortable."

  • "Our waitress was courteous and helpful, the table was ready for us early and everything was really good. Only complaint was that after about an hour, the stools were painful."

  • "Great place in North Park. Amazing beer list. Simple, but very good, pub food. Really enjoyed the fried green tomatoes as an appetizer. The grilled cheese sandwich with the grilled onions was extremely good. Told myself I would only eat half of the sandwich, but I couldn't resist and ate it all. Not a big fan of the smoked minestrone. The soup would have been good without the smoke flavor. The basic burger and fries were also a hit. Loved the sauce that came with the fries. We'll be back."

  • "We came for dinner with our 2 daughters, ages 3 and 5. They enjoyed the play area; we enjoyed the delicious food and amazing beer list. Our girls were very happy splitting a grilled cheese and a cheeseburger. Tasted both, would gladly eat them myself. Nice to know kids get good stuff, too! Adults had housemade dill pickles, nuts, and the olives with feta to start. All were tasty, the feta could have been in smaller chunks but that was easy to solve with our silverware. We then split the kale salad, which was very good. No nasty hard ribs, just leafy green goodness. Mains were the Mussels and the Chicken Sausage. Again, very good. So nice to enjoy quality, fresh ingredients prepared properly, without having to leave the kids at home."

  • "This place was awesome. The kids area is perfect for entertaining the little ones while waiting for the food to arrive, and the food was amazing. Everything we had was great. I think the Waypoint Burger may have been the best burger I've ever had. And they have a great beer list. Good food, good beer, and kid friendly - pretty much the perfect restaurant for me."

  • "We did not eat at this restaurant , because it was freezing in the place. We did not know that they have windows (I would call them walls of windows) open on all three sides of the restaurant. We where looking forward to eating here & made the trip all the way from Escondido. Will have to wait for the summer months to give it another try."

  • "Outstanding tap list and the food was great but the menu prices are up there. The mains are expensive enough to make you think of grabbing a beer there and maybe something cheaper around the street to eat just before."

  • "Selection and pricing of craft beers was good, menu not so much. I was expecting a more varied menu selection, but even the food choices that were offered were rather mediocre, especially when you consider that a Top Chef contestant was behind the menu. The roasted root vegetables became too starchy at the end (too many sweet potatoes which I can eat, but not an absolute fan of) and too sweet (too many apricots in the quinoa). The cassoulet was fine, but maybe too much pork belly as it became overwhelmingly fatty. Husband and I didn't even finish our meals. We were glad we tried it, as it had been on our list of places to try for awhile, but been there, done that."

  • "Me and my girlfiend had our first expereince at Waypoint Public for Valenties Day and we had a great time. The food was excellent, good selection of drinks, and a great atmosphere. We would definitely reccommend it to our friends and will be returning sometime soon!"

  • "Food was really good. Neat play area for the kids. GREAT beer selection. Starters were really good. Waypoint burger was excellent as were the mussels. This wil be great come summer w/ the doors up."

  • "Great family friendly place. Awesome food, not your normal run-of-the-mill bar food, it is great and inventive. Wait staff always very accommodating and helpful. Great beer and wine selection. Love that we can make reservations on line, so much easier especially with kids. I think we have tried everything on the menu and have not been disappointed yet. Noise level is not the best and I wish something would be done about that, very hard to hear even your own conversation at times."

  • "The food was good but took about an hour to arrive to the table. Potatoes came out soggy. Server was nice but pretty lackadaisical. Forgot the coffee my Wife ordered even though they had a whole discussion about it. This was brunch so nothing terribly complicated and also my dish was warm at best. The place has an amazing tap list and the food DID taste good but as noted our visit had issues."

  • "We recently went to Waypoint Public for a little birthday celebration for me. Our waitress was awesome, the food was quite tasty, and the beer selection was outstanding. Would definitely go back. Loved it. And the bonus is that they have a little play area for the kiddos."

  • "Happy hour menu was great...plenty of options, plus great selection of beer at even better price! Friendly environment and good service. Bonus: child playground area (possibly fun while occupied by adults...)"

  • "Waypoint Public is a new restaurant in North Park. The beer list is extensive, but the food is average and overpriced. We chose it for the kid-friendly play area, which allowed the parents in our group to relax and enjoy adult company while their children played. That worked very well. However, the food was a disappointment. The grilled cheese was greasy, the minestrone soup average. The tuna was $23, but there was so little to the meal that my partner was still hungry after finishing. The root vegetable dish was bland. The kid menu has standard fare, with one nice exception - the little chicken dinner. The restaurant is very noisy. The one standout was the service - our server was attentive and excellent."

  • "I was disappointed with the table they gave us by the door, a gust of cold wind will hit you every time somebody walks in. I ordered a roasted vegetable dish over a bed of quinoa, it was delicious. Everyone else at my table ordered burgers and they all enjoyed it. The fries and the side vegetables were good as well. This place knows how to cook their food - which is the most important part :) Overall the experience was not bad at all!"

  • "We visited recently with an out-of-town friend who is quite the foodie. The food is really fabulous and he was impressed. Oyster po' boy tacos are exquisite, as is the Waypoint Burger and the Chicken Sausage Sandwich. We tried two apps, the pretzel (YUM) and blistered peppers. They serving of peppers could have been more generous, or maybe it should come with crackers or bread slices? The wine list could be a bit bigger, but this is a great place for draft beer. Except for the burger, portions are not huge, so we had room for dessert. Alas, there was nothing tempting on the short dessert menu. Would definitely come here again, but for an earlier dinner. The noise level got to be excruciatingly high after a while."

  • "The food at Waypoint was descent. It still had that Linkery feel but without the same sausage menu. I really liked the pig ears and the burger but the short ribs had a strange taste but we didn't send it back because the everyone else like their food. I probably will not go back but the beer menu is great for people that want to enjoy a frosty beverage on a warm San Diego day."

  • "We have been to Waypoint Public twice and have loved it both times. It had just opened the first time we went and we had a nice conversation with the owner who was most interested in our feedback and encouraged us to keep coming back. The second time was with a large group for dinner on a Friday night. Very very crowded...still really enjoyed ourselves but slower service and high noise level that evening detracted a bit from our experience. We will be back though!"

  • "Our only complaint is that when full the place gets so loud it can be hard to communicate with people at your own table."

  • "Wow, we walked in for brunch on Saturday morning feeling less than optimistic as there were no other customers. That ended up being quite a bonus as we got particularly good service. The food was excellent and creative. Our servers, particularly David was informative, friendly and open. It was truly a great brunch."

  • "What a cool little place in North Park, I loved that it was friendly for everyone! We were seated promptly with smiles and our server was great! ( I think his name was JD? I can't recall). We had two kids in our party that loved the play area, while we sat to drink a beer and have some dinner. The Pretzel and Fried Green Tomatoes & Mac n' Cheese were amazing! We'll be back for sure."

  • "We went for happy hour. the food was excellent although the service was kind of slow. We were the only table in there that did not have any children with us. There is a pay area for the kids so there were lotsof families dining there with amall children. The noise level is great if you have kids (you wouldnt be able to hear them screaming) but not good for conversation as it was super loud. I would go back though as the food was excellent!"

  • "Prompt service, great food! The only issue as with so many trendy places is the noise level. But the trade off for a stilted conversation was a friendly waitress (only criticism was lagging in settling our bill) who made good recommendations on beer choices. My other half had the po'boy tacos and raved about them. I had chicken/feta sausage with some amazing aioli sauce and chips. Maybe a few too many carbs but once in a while, so what ?!"

  • "We were visiting our daughter and her husband in North Park and decided to come here for dinner. It was close by and the food was good and the beer even better. The place was crowded but it was Sat night. I would come again."

  • "The food was so so. They had run out of the limited menu items. I felt bad for the hostess, she had the tough job of constantly running from the entrance to seating guests and back again. Our waitress was very nice, my beer was good."

  • "The food was honestly incredible... I got the Waypoint Burger and WOW!!! The beer selection is my favorite part! Great beer!!! The service however is a different story. I can't hate too much because they just started serving food but it took 25 minutes just to speak to a server after being seated and another 15 to get drinks! It looks like they are trying to get in the groove... I will definitely be back... That chef knows what she is doing!"

  • "My whole household is thrilled for the re-opening of an eatery right around the corner from our house. We weren't sure that anything could top the Linkery for us. We appreciated their local, sustainable menu and laid back vibe. Waypoint did not disappoint. The mussels were delicious and the kids burger was a hit! Our only beef was as family diners, we wish the noise level was better before 7:30pm. While the set up is kid friendly, the volume and music selection is not. This can be remedied though. If you are sans little ones, you will love this neighborhood gem!"
