Diner Reviews
  • "Had an early dinner with my hubby here. The extra dirty martinis we ordered were spilt all over, not very cold and not very dirty. By the time we got the extra "dirty" I asked for, we had already eaten our apps and our entrees showed up. Our server was friendly enough but not very helpful or professional. The paella was very good and the steak my hubby got was "good not great." We should've stuck with out usual Nick's (next door)."

  • "I picked this restaurant for my birthday dinner. The reviews were glowing. The restaurant was packed and noisy. Some of the food very tasty and some like the filet mignon mini potpie very disappointing. The server was just doing his job and I felt nothing special from him, let alone any special courtesy or warmth on my birthday. Hey, a girl just wants to feel special on her birthday. I see no reason to return here, there is better food and service in Laguna Beach."

  • "Came here to celebrate my mother's birthday...she ended up trying the lamb chops. She didn't like them at all. The waiter took it back, no questions asked and had the kitchen prepare a different selection for her. The manager even came out to apologize. AWESOME service for sure. A definite must if you are in the area."

  • "The grilled halibut tacos were delish. Son had the duck confit burger. 1 of the best he's ever had. High praise coming from a New York foodie. Also loved the Burata burger. Attentive, good service .Will definitely be back."

  • "Really good filet mignon tacos and homemade veggie burgers. We had great service, a lovely window spot and our favorite wine. The only thing that would make this restaurant better would be an outdoor garden or patio."

  • "My boyfriend and I are always looking for a new place with a great menu to try. Watermarc did not disappoint! I had the filet 3 ways. It was delicious! The filets were cooked to a perfect medium rare, each having their own flavor. My boyfriend got the carpaccio, which he loved. They had numerous sides and appetizers to choose from as well."

  • "Watermarc delivers a warm and vibrant atmosphere with great food. We were seated promptly in a great spot upstairs. This was a first date and my date was very impressed and loved the whole vibe. We will continue frequenting this restaurant going forward. Kudos to the chef on the scallops and sea bass...amazing and the Watermarc martini was superb."

  • "Very cool place, but my food was just so-so and the price was too high for what I got. I won't go back."

  • "I like bullets, so there will be bullets here: - Overall was excellent. - GREAT service (server was very prompt, attentive, peronsable). - Food did come out a bit quick (we were done in an hour after 4 courses), but I can understand them wanting to turn tables on a Saturday night). - Fried calamari/veg app was your average "good" fried cal app. - Lamb chops entree was VERY good. Halibut entree tasty but a little overcooked. - Martinis huge and delicious and if that's not your thing, great wine list!"

  • "This was our second time at Watermarc and we found the food, service and ambiance just as great as the first time. This time, we were seated near the bar area that turned out to be too noisy for my husband who has a hearing aid. The waiter more than willingly found us an area on the inside patio that worked well for us. Not only could we talk, but it made the ambiance more romantic. We will definitely return for a third time!"

  • "I had the watermelon and ahi skewers and it was awesome! Who would have thought of such combination would be so good! My husband and I shared the seafood paella and it was excellent. It was loaded with great seafood with very little rice. Our server was just wonderful! We had a wonderful table upstair under the tree, overlooking the courtyard. We will definite return to this restaurant!"

  • "I ended up at Watermarc during their popular Happy Hour. I asked the server to select three courses of the Grazing Plates menu with wine pairings. The first course, the ricotta cheese plate with a real honeycomb and accompaniments, was tasty, yet very filling. Second course was a special, pan seared scallops with a smokey bacon over polenta. Third course was the popular lamb chops, served medium rare. The wine pairings were all spot on. Service at this restaurant is excellent and the servers really know and enjoy food (unlike the scripted waiter, actor, model types we often see in SoCal). I also appreciated the fact that wine pairings were offered in a half glass, to avoid over consumption. Watermarc is a gem in Laguna!"

  • "We live in a rural Northern California, within driving distance to some great dining options. Trendy, gimmicky places tend to come & go up here, but restaurants like Greens in SF or Chez Panisse in Berkeley have been around for decades. Watermarc may qualify as simply gimmicky. Trying to order a meal from an unfamiliar menu shouldn't have to be so confusing. The "grazing plates" seemed to vary widely by serving size. The flatbread, for example, was actually a small pizza. The waitstaff was wonderful, the food looked beautiful, but I would have preferred more descriptive language on the menu. Eating on the patio is fine if you like the smell of waffle cones from the gelato store across the alley."

  • "We came here for brunch on Father's Day for the first time and absolutely loved it. I had the PCH omelette and it was amazing. The scones had good flavor, but were a little dry. The tater-tots as a side are delicious and definitely recommend. Will be back for lunch and happy hour soon!"

  • "The food was fabulous! The service superb. We joined them for lunch and were even treated to a special dessert because we were celebrating our anniversary! Can't wait to go back on our next trip to CA."

  • "Food was quite good, but noisy people at bar overpowered the experience at the front tables. It felt like a bar rather than fine dining. Go for drinks and have small plates don't bother to spend the money on dinner! Too many other Laguna Beach restaurants with exceptional food and better atmosphere."

  • "The small plate menu was great. We had the ceviche and Ahi watermelon. Delicious. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who is visiting Laguna Beach."

  • "Stringy beef short ribs on mediocre pasta. Tomato soup unbelievably salty and thick - not creamy. They try to promote their wines and have a decent list - but not listing vintages for by-the-glass wines reveals their amateur status."

  • "My husband found this place for dinner on our vacation. So glad he did! The food was fabulous! Loved the small plates. The braised short ribs and corn risotto were amazing. Will definitely come back next time we are in the area!"

  • "Salmon was excellent! Not overdone or dry. Prepared just right on a cedar plank. Other guests had sea bass, which they said was very, very good and Cordon Blue, again good reviews."

  • "After dining here last month we returned again and an equally delicious experience . The food is presented beautifully...the quality and taste exceptional. New Zealand green lip mussels are plump, very fresh and yummy. The same can be said for the Crab Cakes...oh, I forgot the amazing hot baguette with flavored butter that precedes the meal...amazing. We had two fish predations that were both great..but the star was the Paella...loaded with seafood over wonderful risotto and topped with a very sweet Lobster tail...Service was efficient and professional....we are about an hour from this restaurant...it's worth the drive."

  • "We have been to Watermarc a few times prior and have always enjoyed their menu and food, this time we were seated downstairs and ate their small plate menu - outstanding!!! Cannot wait to go back!!!"

  • "We have been going to Watermarc since it opened and are disappointed in it's steady decline. Our last 2 dining experiences have been a BIG disappointment. There are so many really good restaurants in Laguna Beach and this just doesn't rate with them. However, the prices are similar. The food lacked flavor and the menu lacked imagination. There won't be a 3rd visit for us!"

  • "We were given (at our request) a special table upstairs under a tree from the outdoor paseo. Upstairs it is quiet enough to talk! The service was unobtrusive yet attentive. Elegance abounds. If you ask, they'll give you mint-flavored cucumber or citrus water instead of plain! The food was very good and the presentation was wonderful (especially the watermelon ahi small plate!) Delicious bacon-wrapped nut-stuffed dates. Planked salmon came on the cedar it was cooked on. Our waitress advised us well on wine and side dishes. Worth every penny. This was a birthday celebration, and they brought a giant dessert serving of the most delicious bread pudding I've ever eaten. Don't overlook this restaurant!"

  • "Twice we have been lucky enough to get the lovely table for two on the balcony overlooking the brick walkway. The food is always very good. Had small plates and sides this time. Really enjoyed the special pear and fig small plate and the cauliflower side dish. "

  • "Recommended by a foodie, this is a great location to enjoy a great food experience. The menu is different with a large number of small plates of incredible combinations. We choose our top prospects and everything was prepared perfectly. Service was great, good communication skills, good, friendly recommendations and interesting information on the chef and menu design. We had a great evening and will definitely recommend this food destination!"

  • " wanting to sit upstairs, as the downstairs is a little noisy and worn. Lucy, the GM extraordinaire doubling as host, was beyond accommodating and found us a place to wait away from the madding crowd, while an upstairs table was prepared. Only a few minutes later, and after a prompt server, Brittany, suggested the blackberry (not Boysenberry) Mojito, which followed us up to our cozy booth/table upstairs. Our Johnny-on-the-spot server (not his real name), turned us on to the appetizer of the day: Crispy Brussel sprouts with lardon and arugula -new meaning to: "not your mother's Brussel sprouts. Homemade mozzarella spread smoothly on grilled bruschetta and ahi-watermelon-tomato skewers on beds of pickled seaweed. Dining perfection."

  • "Definitely go! Just delicious and never disappoints. The small plates are my favorites... I order a bunch and do tastings... Goat cheese balls, lamp chops, mussels, flatbread, corn risotto, ahi watermelon stack... It's just a great date place, I take my kids who are 2 & 13 but overall I don't recommend kids unless they are well behaved... Or other diners will evil eye you. Never had a bad time here... My son loves it (his new local fave) Happy hour is 7 days a week... Great deals! Service is excellent. Patio upstairs overlooks trees with lights and only has about 3-4 tables for only 2-3 diners per table. GO!!"

  • "My husband and I dined at Watermarc with friends. It was difficult to chose what to order because so many things I love were on it. In fact, there were so many starters that appealed to us that we decided to share an entree and order 3 starters and share another one with the couple who came with us. We had the ahi skewers, brussel sprouts, yellowtail and the truly outstanding crab cakes to start and then shared the chilean sea bass, which was perfectly made. Although we were stuffed, we found room for the incredible bread pudding. We brought our own wine. The service was impeccable, with the meal appropriately paced and our server was excellent. We sat upstairs and although it was noisy, we didn't have to scream. It was a wonderful meal."
