  • "We went to this restaurant for a romantic honeymoon dinner. It was mostly empty which awesome and unusual for this place. We had a 5 course meal and the food was soooo delicious we were impressed. The wine list was half off that night so I think we ended up drinking more than eating but either way the wine was also to die for. They have an amazing wine list. Our server, James, made us feel comfortable didn't rush us at all, he was very attentive and personable. And knowledgeable. Overall we absolutely loved this restaurant! For a expensive night out this is definitely the place to go!!!"

  • "Me and my girlfriend found we were missing the great outdoor feel and food we enjoyed while we were traveling Europe. This place had both. A nice patio in a quiet area, with birds chirping all around (but not loud and annoying). A great menu with options for multiple budgets. And food that was truly Italian (or at least what we had in Italy.) simple ingredients done well combining to make perfect delicious meals that will satisfy anyone. I highly recommend this place."

  • "The patio was a wonderful find - Bright and sunny with beautiful shading. Lovely background music, but low enough that our group could hear each other! Lunch was delicious; our group gave the paninis and salads thumbs up. Service was friendly and efficient. Easy on site parking; access to restaurant no problem, even with 102 Avenue bridge closure newly underway."

  • "Fettuccini was dry, chicken on it chewy and the whole dish totally bland despite extra fresh Parmesan and ground pepper. Spaghettini and meatballs, disaster. Supposedly one of their signature dishes. Meatballs were tough and dry as dust. Go for a drink and calamari on the deck and then go somewhere yummy for dinner."

  • "Waiter was most inept ever encountered - anywhere in the world! He only named one special; poured wine only once, after which we needed to ask for this service; didn't notice we had no cutlery for main course; ordered mains too early so they sat under heat and were dry and overdone when brought to us. He offered dessert with accompanying wine when We complained of this, and when I asked about other specials as a 'by the way'. Then he brought the Bill before offering coffee. An otherwise memorable evening at a longtime favourite restaurant was spoiled. Will I recommend this restaurant - maybe with another waiter."

  • "Food was great always since we started in march to eat here. The special was AWESOME!!!! The salmon and crab on it was great. The cured meat with cheese platter~~ almost EVERY type of the locally cured meat gave us surprise~!!. The duck~omg it's outta this world, love wine from Mission Hill. The Tiramisu is a must-try no matter how filled you are. Great for family sharing.Chef was cooking pizza in front of us was great to see him,nice pizza crust."

  • "Was looking forward to this restaurant. Heard lots of good things about it. Was disappointed. Waiter didn't know red wine glass from white. Waiter came every few minutes to coax us to order. Hardly had time to talk before he was around again. We were a party of 4 and the table could barely hold the 4 plates and cutlery. My wife ordered her lamb well done and I explicitely made sure the waiter understood the order. It came out medium. Magically, it reappeared three minutes later well done. not sure if they put a blow torch to it to get it to the right level. Thought a restaurant of this calibre would understand well done. Rest of the meals were fair. For an average restaurant, this would have been an OK meal. I just expected better ."

  • "i've eaten here numerous times and the food is usually excellent. was disappointed in the eggplant parmigiana on focaccia.. toon much bread and very little taste to the eggplant or the sauce. the caesar salad dressing was overwhelmingly mayonaise-y and not a real caesar dressing..very disappointing."

Main course was fabulous blackened salmon and spaghetti with meat balls!! never disappointed when we dine at Violino."

  • "The overall restaurNt is great but sommelier was not overly knowledgable of the wines I selected as choices. Server was mYbe a bit too eager and interrupted conversation a number of times, but was very helpful and knowledgable about the menu and our selections. Service was certainly attentive and we did not wait for any requests to be met. Would certainly visit again, many more menu items to try."

  • "We had heard great reviews from friends and decided to try Violino. I had the pistachio crusted halibut which was perfect. The lobster risotto was ruined by the hard bitter chunks of fennel. For the price($34)overall disappointing. Chicken parmesan, dreadful dish. The meal is served on a wood plank, the chicken had been pounded too thin with an overbearing crust. the plank was almost completely covered with the chicken (topped with tomato sauce that lacked seasoning). The sides included a few olives and maybe 3 tbsp. of risotto. Overall this dish lacked flavor. With the amazing restaurants in Edmonton I don't think we'll be back to Violino Gastronomia Italiana."

  • "The occasion, we were celebrating the birthday of our daughter's boyfriend. His father was a chef, so we wanted something special. I have to tell you that independently, my husband and I, both decided the Violino's was the place we wanted to go and you did not disappoint. The food was wonderful, James our server (I hope I have the name correct) was wonderful. Very attentive and knowledgeable, as always. The scallop and mango appetizer with the black rice. Oh that was wonderful, everything was, but that in particular stood out for me. I could go on and on but I am running out of character space. We all had a great time, lingering long after dinner, engaged in our conversation. It was delightful. Highly recommended."

We didn't have any wine but we have selected in the past. The service was excellent. I love the ambiance of the restaurant and how peaceful it is. Thank you for the experience."

  • "The upstairs in this historic building is often used for small groups. Our small table was put in a room with 2 large parties, so we felt overwhelmed. But the decor was nice and the service very good. The weather was not good for outdoor dining, but the deck looked attractive. Food was well prepared and well presented. Good parking around back/side of building."

  • "Arrived fashionably late and was greeted by name at the door by our waiter who showed us to our table by the fire. Bread with oil and vinegar was delicious. Generous portions which left no room for dessert. We ordered the Pistacchio Incrosata (Alaskan Halibut) which was so fresh and tender that our taste buds were overloaded and we both agreed that it was possibly the best halibut that we have eaten."

  • "This is one of my favourite restaurants. Started out long ago with the prix fixee' menu, but quickly moved to the main menu. Have never had a dish I didn't enjoy immensely. Broad spectrum of choices for every palate. The chef is amazing and the service cannot be beaten. I try to get here as often as possible. I hope to work my way through the menu before it changes. Usually a pretty quiet environment, and the decor is elegant and relaxing. On colder nights I would ask for one of the tables for two beside the fireplace. The ambiance upstairs is just as nice. I would and do highly recommend this restaurant. Have never eaten outside as I am bug-phobic, but it looks very pretty in the summer."

  • "This restaurant was far above our expectations. The server was excellent and made our dining experience THE VERY BEST. We celebrated a birthday complete with dinner, cake and drinks. We already recommended this restaurant to our friends and family. We will bring our guests from Montreal in July. This really puts class into the downtown Edmonton scene! THANK YOU. Bravo!"

James, our server was very attentive and catered to our EVERY need, going above and beyond for us. His recommendations were right on. The food was very good and the wine priced reasonably. We will be back, maybe to the outdoor deck when the weather finally warms up!"

  • "Here we go... Ambience: Lovely old home, lots of character. White tablecloths, upholstered chairs...but what's with the paper on top? It's tacky and if you're trying to protect your tablecloths it doesn't work anyway. Food: The good...bread, beet salad, risotto(yum), cheesecake. The NOT so good...chicken parmesan (bizarre), chocolate raspberry torte (tasteless) Service: Was ok but we noticed all the other tables were receiving an amuse bouche so he must have forgot ours. Also could have told me that the chicken parmesan can feed 4 people! Also, it's weird to me that a fine dining restaurant is bringing takeout containers to the table for the diners to scoop their own food into. Not sure if we'll be back or not. "

  • "My family and I were in town for the weekend and since it was a very last minute trip, we didn't have reservations anywhere. We found a table for 6 at Violino's. We got there and at the very last minute had a 7th person join us. When we got to the restaurant and told them, the server got really annoyed (like we were putting him out by adding a 7th person). The seats got arranged and then he asked us about beverages. We asked about a good bottle of white wine and while we were still deciding, he walked away and came back with a random bottle. We accepted the bottle because we didn't want to upset him by sending him back. The food was delicious but we felt like we were "bothering" our server every time we asked for something all night."

As soon as we mentioned this to the server who brought our dessert the manager or owner immediately apologized and rectified the problem. The server also apologized. We were very happy with how the matter was resolved."

  • "The food and service at Violino are both excellent, and we will definitely return. Note that portion sizes are large -- we started with two appetizers: meatballs and crab cakes -- but combined with our entrees this was too much food. Next time, the two of us would share one appetizer. As for the ambiance, we were seated on the second floor which gave us lots of natural light. However, since the windows face west, a number of customers were asking for the curtains to be closed, but since the curtains do not close the servers had to tack large white sheets of paper on the windows. Management should consider purchasing blinds that can be lowered from the top down. Overall, this is a charming restaurant with good food and great service."
