Diner Reviews
  • "Good food, good service. Owner made us feel very welcome. Had a great time. Will definitely return."

  • "Via Uno is a welcome addition to the Half Moon Bay dining scene. The menu is dominated by Calabrian cuisine and the execution is quite good. There is a nice balance of pizzas, pastas and entrees. High marks for allowing the ingredients to shine. The wine list, while small, is quite impressive. Not the cheapest meal, but reasonably priced. The noise level could be off putting to some, but if you like a friendly staff (and the occasional musical interlude), Via Uno is certainly worth a try."

  • "I heard from an Italian friend of mine that there was a new restaurante in Half Moon Bay that was certified for authentic Neapolitan pizza. We tried it and it is amazing! The crust is beautiful - floury, chewy, crusty - with delicious toppings. Homemade pastas, homemade real Italian bread, homemade croutons in the Caesar salad. Interesting and extensive list of Italian wines by the glass. A rustic ambiance of stone floors and rock walls. Great Italian music. Excellent staff that aims to make your meal perfect. This place is worth the drive!"

  • "My husband and I always love going to Via Uno. The food is always superb. They also do substitutions quite easily. The lentil soup is amazing and wish it were on the menu all the time not only on the specials. The other night they noticed that we didn't enjoy one of our glasses of wine from across the room! And they insisted on giving us a new glass of wine from another maker!! They also have a fun and lively atmosphere"

  • "After a beautiful scenic drive on Highway 1, there is Via Uno, tucked away in a corner, with great food and wonderful service, shout out to Tanya!"

  • "The owners and wait staff are so attentive and friendly. There is a lot of movement around the restaurant and they stop by tables to chat. There is an outside room with heaters, you can see the ocean but it is not truly a "view." There is a wine vault that you can book for groups. We went to a birthday party which was held in the vault/room. The bar is fun, drinks are good. Pizza is excellent. I had butternut squash gnocchi with sage, very original. There was an accordion player playing traditional Italian music. It seems most of the staff is from Italy. We really like Via Uno."

  • "When they first opened I ordered the antipasto platter, it had a beautiful assortment of meats, cheeses and dipping sauces- when ordering it this time I wish I knew that it changed...I could hardly stand eating this antipasto platter. The octopus was old it had a fishy smell and taste to it and it was located in the center of the platter touching everything else, there was hardly any meat, the cheese was so thick you couldn't even eat it. Now to the pizza- burnt... It was a burnt pancake! I'm supprised they even served it."

  • "Second time there. On the patio again (by choice :-) great food, great service. Haven't sat inside but it does seem noisy in there when walking through."

  • "I took my girlfriend here for her birthday due to the positive Yelp reviews. When I made the reservation on OpenTable, I specified that it was for a birthday dinner. We chose outside seating, but in hindsight, inside is far better for ambiance. My girlfriend's two vegetable side dishes were good, but not spectacular. I ordered the lobster and shrimp pasta special. The flavor was good, but there was very little lobster meat and the shrimp were the mini shrimp that you normally see in salads. It still tasted good, but it just felt, well, cheap. We did not get bread until I asked for it, and it was some of the worst stale bread I ever had. Lastly, there was no mention of my girlfriend's birthday. We were both quite disappointed."

  • "Via Uno is another Italian option on the coast. We found the food selection good, even for those of us was various dietary limitations, and the quality was excellent. I ordered the gnocchi, and it was the lightest I have ever had, complemented wonderfully by the rich gorgonzola black truffle sauce. The menu could be more thorough; we could not tell which entrees came with vegetable sides and which did not. The noise level was more than energetic, however, and we may not go back, as we could not carry on a conversation at our table. The background music, first recorded and then live, added to the overall din, as did the closeness of the tables. Granted, it was a Saturday night, so we will try again at another time."

  • "You exit your car in California and enter into Via Uno and end up in Italy. We were lucky to come at the off hour for lunch (2:30 on a Friday) and had the place to ourselves and our Italian hosts. Excellent food from appetizer to dessert. Finally a destination in HMB worth the drive from any Bay Area location. Bravo!"

  • "Via Uno is a great place for lunch or dinner. The outside patio actually has a view of the ocean. The atmosphere is upbeat, the service great. There is a great neighborhood feel. It's like being at friend's house for dinner."

  • "We were so looking forward to this restaurant opening and our hopes were not dashed. We've now been there twice and each time the dishes have ranged from excellent to very good. The staff members are all charming and do everything to make you fell welcome and enjoy your meal. We will be back many times."

  • "Third time we ate here & food was fantastic. Fish is fresh & pasta is homemade. Wine list is good & corkage was extremely reasonable!! This is. Truly authentic Italian food. Portions are big & prices are very good. They do not try to push out once you are finished to turn the table over. Service is respectful & professional."

  • "OK, Hard to say this, but PREVIOUSLY the service was overzealous. Too many people stopping by trying to help, almost trying too hard. Food always good every visit. Held off reviewing til now. Most recent visit, they were busy, so didn't have a bunch of different people stop by the table. Loved it. Music was a bit too loud to talk over tho. Every visit, the food has been tasty and well prepared. Party of four, two pizzas, a pasta dish and a salad. Salad eater took one slice of each pizza. All left full. The pizza crusts were spot on, the pasta special was flavor filled. Got there a few minutes before our reservation, so had to wait a few, but were seated before our time."

  • "First of all, I am a reasonably good cook, so I find myself being a bit overly- critical when paying to dine in a restaurant. I have not gone wrong with this one. My main goal is to order something that I do not prepare at home. There is always something intriguing here that turns out to be very tasty and up to my expectations.....Give it a try!"

  • "I've been here three times, and each time, Francesco and his crew make me feel like the Prodigal Son. Seriously, like the fattened calf is killed, a celebration is planned, I was lost and am now found... the whole nine. The food and wine bring me back to the little cafes found in the alleyways in Italy. The live guitarist they have adds to the ambiance. Much of the staff speaks Italian and are warm and hospitable. I love this place. I live on the East Bay, and since finding Via Uno (which is about an hour away from where we live), I've had no qualms making the trek back. Every time, I bring someone new. And every time, they are as wowed by this gem along Highway 1 ("Via Uno") as I am. Great find!!"

  • "From beginning to end, a very pleasurable experience; from the owners' greeting to the very capable waiter and last but certainly not least, the excellent meal. If available, don't miss the Potato/Leek Soup... On a scale of 1-10, I'll give it at least a 12"

  • "We were eager to go to Via Uno after hearing excellent reviews from the community...it did not disappoint. The food was excellent, very fun atmosphere and superb owners/hosts. We are very happy to have one of the original Mezza Luna waiters back in the community as a new restaurant owner. There is always room for one more Italian Restaurant on the coastside. They each offer something unique. Via Uno has a hip, cosmopolitan vibe."

  • "What a great evening, the food was tasty. We started with a couple of salads to share - excellent! The server recommended an excellent Italian wine (in our price range). Pizzas were huge, the crust amazing. I had the zucchini parmesan and a side of Farmer John's Swiss chard - I really enjoyed it. The lemon ice cream was a perfect ending. Service was excellent - great job!!"

  • "Ate at via uno for the first time on a Thursday night. It was crowded but the service was good, very friendly. Food was excellent- we had the beet/arugula/goat cheese salad and three different pasta dishes. Everything was fantastic- we will be back often. Only complaint was the noise level. We were seated next to a large group and we had trouble carrying on a conversation."

  • "All the food was amazing. We started with the cheese and meat plate and the sausage with broccoli rabe and it was great. We had the Gnocchi and the Sole both were perfect the best we ever had. We finished the meal up with the Chocolate Truffle ice cream and it was better then I could have imagined. I have never had such amazing service anywhere. Everyone smiled and checked on us, and when we were taking awhile on our appetizers they asked if we wanted to wait to have the main course come out so we wouldn't be rushed. Also they had live music the night we were there and the guitar player was incredible. Great Experience, we will be going here often."

  • "Great Italian. As a Jersey native, I get frustrated with the California-style Italian. But they do it so well....it doesn't matter. Get the "slop" pasta dish."

  • "Was crowded inside, but patio was not. They do allow dogs on the floor by your table, we loved that. Service was not great. Too much effort to show they were or knew Italian . Recommended a good wine selection, but food lacked presentation, while for most part was good. Pizza crusts is delicious. We I'll recommend, and return for another chance to see for improvement. While Half Moon Bay needs a great pizza restaurant, the Italian food was not the usual selection. But worth a second chance,"

  • "A break from HMB high Resturant prices ....fantastic food, the wood oven pizza is the best !! If your'e in the mood, the homemade pasta is perfect.great wine list from California and Italy.... They make you feel like family, great group of employees are all about customer SERVICE !!"

  • "I watched with great interest the complete overhaul of what was once a shabby Chinese food restaurant to what now is a lovely Italian restaurant. I was sure the location was a winner and the efforts put into the wood fired ovens and the ambiance of the place made me dream of mouthwatering Italian foods. The food never hit one high note for anyone of the four of us. The pizza needed more baking, our different salads lacked flavor, the spaghetti with shrimp and artichoke was so bland and the shrimp so small I was embarrassed for the owners and the Chef."

  • "Fabulous! Not a place for a quiet time... Pretty loud...A lot of life & good food & drink! High energy! Excellent wine list. Enjoyed their seafood presentation and their pizza. Excellent calamari & octopus appetizers. Good waiter service. The young ladies to greet & seat us upon entering Via Uno were a little bit "scattered", but we finally were seated after a 5 minute wait past our reservation time. "

  • "The best part of this restaurant was the friendliness of the staff. The food was good, but nothing special. The noise level was very high. We sat across from each other on a two-top table and it was very difficult to hear each other talk. We want to go back again and sit outside, we think that might be a better atmosphere and a lower noise level. The experience was good and the friendliness of our waiter, Massimo, who is also one of the owners made our experience very nice."

  • "We had reserved a table for 6 and were seated at a table for 4 - a little too cozy. They don't write down the orders well and one of our party did not get her main course. It was delivered when 5 of us were done eating. Coffee order not correct and the same party was not served what she ordered. Bad experience!"

  • "My father and I were treated with genuine warmth and attentive service at Via Uno in Half Moon Bay. We sat outside on the protected patio and enjoyed the fresh air. We dined on a variety of lunch items, all obviously hand crafted in the true Italian way using fresh local ingredients.... Minestrone soup, a very large fresh grilled chicken salad and our pizza "Angelo" was more than expected...the prosciutto with the mix of bufala cheese and porcini mushrooms is calling us back. We ordered tiramisu for desert, being Italian, we have had tiramisu Many times before at family gatherings, other restaurants, this was the best. "

  • "This new gem of a restaurant in Half Moon Bay continues to amaze me! The food only gets better and better. The menu selection is so diverse yet each dish is a work of perfection blending the flavors of local regionally grown produce with sauces that I have not tasted since I wandered the streets of Rome. My favorite is the Parmigiana di Zucchine [Baked zucchini parmesan] which is a variation of the more common eggplant parmigiana. Recently I had the Carpaccio di Bresaola which is air-dried, salted beef on top of which are raw artichoke hearts that have been soaked in lemon juice for hours. The taste is like nothing you have ever experienced anywhere else. It is amazing that Via Uno can teach Half Moon Bay about how to eat artichokes! "
