Tucked away atop Nob Hill, Venticello Ristorante, is one San Francisco’s best kept secrets. With quaint tables, a wood burning oven and views of the bay, Venticello provides a warm intimate atmosphere that is reminiscent of a Tuscan Farmhouse.
Recognized as one of the most romantic restaurants in San Francisco, we are located just a few blocks away from the historical Mark Hopkins and Fairmont Hotels, as well as walking distance from the Huntington Hotel, The Stanford Court, and the Ritz- Carlton Hotel.
As you walk into Venticello, you will enter our upstairs area. Our full and complete wooden bar is supplied with an array of distilled spirits as well as some of the finest Italian and Californian wines. This allows you and your guests to enjoy a variety of beverages while hearing the Cable Car bell ring just outside our front door.

  • "Family snafu on date night resulted in a call to the restaurant letting them know our arrival was iffy and indefinite... they were sympathetic and accommodating and whisked us right to our seats upon arrival at primetime on a Sat night. I'm sure they can't always be so flexible, but their service and willingness to help went beyond the call of duty... they saved date night for us! :)"

  • "I have been going to Venticello for years and love the restaurant and the staff. On this visit I ordered the ravioli. It came arranged nicely on the plate but it was watery. It wasn't a sauce but seemed as if they hadn't been drained properly. My date's pork cutlet needed a steak knife to cut although it was tasty. I love the restaurant but the food was not up to its usual standards."

  • "We've eaten at Venticello many times, and this time we were very disappointed. My cioppino was terribly oversalted and our waitress never came by to ask how our meals were. We never saw her until she came to ask us about dessert. I ordered a crostata that was dry throughout and tasted like it had been sitting around for days. I also asked for ice cream on it instead of the mascarpone it came with and was charged an additional 7. (for a full 2nd dessert) instead of an upcharge for the ice cream. Venticello has been a favorite of ours over the years, but after this past weekend, I'm not sure I'd give it another chance."

  • "We went there to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday and brought another couple with us who had never dined there before. Needless to say we were thoroughly impressed. The food was excellent; the service was off the charts. The wine recommendatons were right on the money for the food that we ordered. I recommend the Fettucine Salsiccia (sp?). Other Italian restaurants have had this on their menus, but this one is the best. Also recommend the new dessert of the season, Strawberry Rubbard Pie with Marscapone cheese, a great combination of tart and sweet. The dining experience was awesome for this little neighborhood gem."

Huby had pasta dish, also great. Had a great table with the view of the bay bridge. Any restaurant that lasts so many decades must be doing something right!"

  • "We celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary at this wonderful restaurant. The atmosphere is unlike any other-you feel submerged in a beautiful room full of wonderous sea creatures. We enjoyed the caviar and couldn't wait for our main course. The fish dishes followed by desert were served at the proper temperature with a great visual appeal. We would recommend Venticello for a perfect evening out."

  • "This is a tiny neighborhood place on Nob Hill. The menu is limited but what they serve is well-prepared and delicious. The wine list is California and Italian only, which is what one would expect from an Italian restaurant in San Francisco. The tables are close together and the noise level is high so if you do not like claustrophobic seating you should avoid this. But my friend and I had a very long and enjoyable dinner and were not bothered by either the noise or the close tables -- perhaps because our favorite Italian restaurant in New York has a similar atmosphere."

  • "This restaurant always has interesting specials. I enjoyed a perfectly prepared red snapper. The other guests in my party had a pasta dish and a meat entree, all equally well prepared and beautifully presented. The service is spot on. The wine selection was very nice and a good value, not overwhelming or over priced. Other than one of my dining partners almost choking on a simple piece of bread, the evening was perfect. By the way, the staff was right on it, and aided in his recovery. A few of the tables have a perfect view of the bay in the distance. That's very nice. Venticello team: great food, great service, great first aid and I'll be back again without my friend."

  • "our friends 60th birthday-was seated directly next to the front door where the cold air kept coming in- our waiter never once smiled or acted like he cared about us at all--the food was too rich or too bland--the owner had an untucked shirt and looked very unkept-the caesar salad was very good, the tuna was bland, the pesto too rich-the parking attendant was completely rude to our daughter--asked if she was really going into the restaurant kept looking at her to make sure she was -he told her if she wasn't really going into the restaurant he could not park her car--as she stood making a phone call to us to tell us she had arrived early, he kept watching her and then asked her if she knew where the front door was bad experience all around-"

  • "I found this restaurant on Google and made a reservation for a romantic "babymoon" night out with my husband. We were not disappointed. The food was excellent- classic Italian. The service was unbelievable, and I have been dreaming about their lemonade ever since! I was super freaked out after circling for nearly twenty minutes trying to find parking, when my husband noticed they had valet! I was still a little frustrated and upset, but as soon as I walked in the door the host (maitre d'?) was so welcoming and friendly all my frustration vanished. I sat facing the window and got to see the amazing TransAmerica Pyramid and the Bay Bridge's light show! I would come back in a heartbeat."

  • "The food was outstanding first off. Ciopinno was absolutely delicious, well seasoned with fresh seafood goodies. The homemade meatballs came bubbling in a cup of warm marinara and cheese, delightful. My girlfriend had the gnocchi which was also homemade and she raved about it. The waiter was great. I personally hate when waiters drop by every 3 minutes asking how things are, especially when I'm hoping for a romantic dinner. This waiter was great, he kept a good distance from where he made gestures to me asking if everything was okay. This way it did not disturb my date though still allowed us to be serviced. Overall a recommended spot."

  • "First time at Venticello. We had tickets to a fantastic organ concert (Cameron Carpenter) at Grace Cathedral. Entrance is on Washington, not Taylor, though we discovered that easily enough. I had the butternut squash soup and the beet ravioli with goat cheese filling -- each very tasty. My husband had the black ink squid risotto -- excellent. Tables are close, so overhearing other conversations is unavoidable. We'll be back if we are in the area again."

  • "We were searching for a non tourist place for a twosome dinner with a romantic vibe . This is the place. Nestled in the Knob Hill area surrounded by condos and apartment complexes this is a real find; especially for those weary of going to highly advertised spots. The food is good, fine service, and an ensuite pizza oven churning out tasty homemade ambrosia for the Italian palate. Candlelight setting promotes good conversation and hand holding. Would defiantly return"

Waiter was very efficient but robotic. Not really interested in adding to a complete dinning experience. In fact, he seemed bored. Pizza was excellent and food good. Would not rush back. If you do go, ask to be seated downstairs."

  • "This restaurant on Washington Street off of Taylor is a Nob Hill favorite for the views of the Bay Bridge as you walk into it and the trattoria ambiance w/baking oven inside. But, it was very noisy the evening that we went there; it takes only one loud patron or a party of 4-6 to make conversation at your table unbearable. We had both the loud patron and the party of 6 near us so the sound was near deafening. This was a Saturday, January 18 so maybe a weekday dinner might be significantly different. The food was fair - the pizzas served had burnt crust and the homemade ravioli tasted pre-cooked. The wine list was limited but the choices good. I would say that it was over-rated in Zagat's."

My husband asked if the pork dish could be separated from the lemon the waiter said yes, then served the dish covered in a lemon sauce. We should have been told that the lemon is integral to the dish and not a component that could be withheld. Waiter was in a hurry all night and rude when we asked about it."

We went there on a busy holiday weekend, but the service was still good. The restaurant is very noisy, but that's to be expected because it's quite small. Located in the very nice Nob Hill area of San Francisco, this will be a regular dining spot for us when we are in the City. Go early if you want a quiet dining experience!"

  • "Very disappointed. Menu has changed. Gnocchi appetizer was good, but both main entrees were lukewarm and tasteless. We ordered an expensive bottle of wine but it was wasted on this meal. My husband's flank steak meal had a large slab of dried out vegetarian lasagne which he sent back. My meal had 4 tiny scallops with cold mashed potatoes topped with tasteless kale or spinach. I ate the scallops but vegs/potatoes were horrible. My husband got a pizza instead and was not impressed. This used to be our favorite SF restaurant but we will not go back. I think it has changed ownership."

The arancini were delicious and were not too heavy...they had dungeness crab inside and were perfectly cooked. I loved the cioppino, as the broth was light but had a great spicy flavor as well. Oh, the home made gelato was fantastic too. Loved this place"
