A word from Venticello
Tucked away atop Nob Hill, Venticello Ristorante, is one San Francisco’s best kept secrets. With quaint tables, a wood burning oven and views of the bay, Venticello provides a warm intimate atmosphere that is reminiscent of a Tuscan Farmhouse.
Recognized as one of the most romantic restaurants in San Francisco, we are located just a few blocks away from the historical Mark Hopkins and Fairmont Hotels, as well as walking distance from the Huntington Hotel, The Stanford Court, and the Ritz- Carlton Hotel.
As you walk into Venticello, you will enter our upstairs area. Our full and complete wooden bar is supplied with an array of distilled spirits as well as some of the finest Italian and Californian wines. This allows you and your guests to enjoy a variety of beverages while hearing the Cable Car bell ring just outside our front door.
Venticello, meaning soft breeze, will sweep you and your guests away with an unforgettable experience.

Diner Reviews
  • "The neighborhood ambience is terrific. A streetcar runs outside, and outside the restaurant lies a peekaboo view of the Golden Gate Bridge. Our party started off with black kale salad (with a little extra crunch from nuts), the scampi appetizer and a side of excellent romano beans. Then we had breaded veal in a lemon sauce with spinach (very good) a scallop, mushroom and risotto special (tasty but needed more scallops), and pappardelle with meat (also good but acidic), finished off with a shared zabaglione. If I were returning, I'd get the veal and the romano beans and split them with another person. Service was outstanding, especially considering that the restaurant was short-staffed that night. Special kudos to the GM. Good wine list."

  • "Ate here twice on a trip as it was near where we stayed and was open on Sunday. The atmosphere was romantic and warm but the restaurant is small and it is both busy and noisy. The tables are quite close together. The seasonal salads - the black kale and peach salads - were truly fabulous. The main courses were very good but less remarkable with smallish portions. The zabaglione and gelato were excellent. Reservations are recommended on Sunday particularly."

  • "We're from Austin, Texas, and were in Tuscany six weeks ago. I thought I was back in Tuscany. Austin is cool but it ain't Florence."

  • "We found this little gem on Open Table and it was a great experience. Delicious food and attentive service. The lamb and the gnocchi were especially tastey. Nice wine selection."

  • "I took my wife to Venticello to celebrate our third anniversary and start a night out without our baby. The restaurant was on a large hill and cable car route, which provided a nice view of SF. Overall the place was quite small, which made reservations a must and the setting quite intimate. My wife and I both enjoyed our meals, which were deceivingly filling, as well as our wine and dessert choice. The restaurant met my expectations for a nice, quiet dinner with my wife, and the service was very professional and knowledgeable. I would recommend this restaurant for a nice dinner."

  • "From the instant we came in, everything was perfect. Our server, a pro, food suggestions, spot on not one thing wrong. My husband wanted to come back the next night!"

  • "I took friends visiting from out of town and a fellow local San Franciscan. It is such a charming place to give my friend a true example of a great intimate restaurant in the city. Great location with cable cars passing by, a peek at the bay, bridge and the pyramid. Wonderful food with homemade paste, bread and pizza in their brick oven. Very friendly wait staff who did not rush us at all. We chatted so much catching up he had to come back 3 times but never made us feel like we were too slow. Just wonderful service. I had the pasta carbonara, with the homemade mozzarella with tomatoes. My friend had the meatballs and met other friend had the pizza. We call loved our dishes and we very happy. Very liberal pour on the cocktails as well."

  • "We've been going to Venticello for maybe 10 to 12 years. We have always considered it a very special find both because of its location and for its great menu. This time we were very disappointed. We had the grilled figs wrapped in procuitto for a starter. They were COLD! Tasty, but so disappointing. The ravioli's were good, but again, only warm, not hot and while the menu says they have artichokes in them, I couldn't see artichokes or taste them. We had the whole sea bass. It was tasty, but it came just plopped on the plate with nothing else. Where was a sprig of parsley or a wedge of lemon! All in all, it was disappointing and I doubt that we will return."

  • "Highly recommended from a friend who lived close by. Food was not warm, not enough dressing on the salad my steak tasted old not fresh My son had chippino and said the sauce was horrid. Won't go back."

  • "Like stepping into an old east coast (Boston or New York) neighborhood Italian restaurant. All the food is good. Not all is amazing, but OMG, the eggplant parmigiana is... so good. It would be fine with me if that was all they served (that and a martini)."

  • "Terrific food, interesting menu, great ambience, attractive decor, excellent service -- this is a real gem -- we will definitely go back."

  • "Very disappointing...remembering from years past the food has really taken a drop off....the dessert (stone fruit crostata) was bland, and burn at the bottom. The Pork Milanese was overly "lemon" flavored...it was overwhelming. Unfortunately the restaurant was "under-whelmening"."

  • "Every dish we tried was outstanding! Highlights were the wrapped fig appetizers, grilled peach salad and melt in your mouth Ravioli. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "It was all just ok. Food portions and quality is falling off. Service was average. Not the greatest value for what you pay. Not sure I'd give it another try with so many better restaurants in SF."

  • "A friend recommended this restaurant for my husband's and my 10th Anniversary, saying the food was excellent and the ambience intimate and romantic. I would agreed with all that. However there was one thing that spoiled the meal for me. I'd read reviews before going that said the food was great but saw consistent reviews that fish had been overcooked. I ordered lamb instead. Foolish me! I forgot to ask for it rare. It came well done and my disappointment was renewed with each bite. My husband wanted me to return it but I didn't want him to eat his meal while I was waiting for my new one. In a restaurant of this quality and price range, it's fundamental to ask the client how they want meat cooked. Everything else was delicious."

  • "Venticello was a wonderful place to eat. We were celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary. We arrived early for our reservation and they took us right in and seated us. The waiter was very personable and made sure that we understood the menu and explained some of the different items. As a recognition of our 40th anniversary, they presented us with a complimentary dessert with candles and an after dinner cordial. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone that was going to San Francisco and wanted a fabulous meal. We will return for sure."

  • "Venticello is an amazing gem in the heart of San Fransisco's Nob Hill residential area. The restaurant was recommended by the Omni Hotel, whose concierge coined it as the "best kept secret" in the city. He couldn't have been more correct!!! What a find. Truly superb italian food with a healthy twist, as well as great wine & cocktails and deserts big enough to share. This place is welcome change from the hectic, mediocre fare found for the same pricing at the tourist traps located on the wharf (The wharf may be famous, but it is way over-rated)."

  • "I started coming here in the early 90's and then forgot about as many new restaurants opened in the city. Couple of months ago I was looking for a restaurant in Nob Hill and came back in by chance. I was impressed how the food was/is as good as ever. Now I keep coming back! Tables are a little close and noise level a bit high, so if your looking for anonymity keep that in mind. Buon Appetito!"

  • "What a good find in this part of SF. A little neighbourhood Italian, but with big City pretensions. Good food and prompt and efficient service. Wine list was a little expensive but a very nice meal."

  • "This Nob Hill restaurant is a gem! I had an antipasto containing rare sushi-grade tuna, olives, mushrooms, and carpaccio; my wife the peach salad. These were prior to the home-made sausage pizza from the wood-burning over. A perfect supper. The place is smallish--maybe I should say "intimate", yet it has great wines and a full bar."

  • "My wife had an excellent meal, but I made the mistake of ordering the whole mediterranean sea bass. It was over cooked and had obviously been placed in the oven with the vegetables underneath. As such the fish was dry and the vegetables over cooked to the point of being hard to identify."

  • "This was a great find right in Nob Hill. The service and food was just delightful and Valet parking a big bonus. The wine list was just fine."

  • "We had a wonderful time. Service was outstanding, food was delicious, had soup of the day - tomato which was so creamy and rich flavors. Swordfish was moist and tender and my wife's Polenta dinner was super. The sorbet for desert had wonderful flavors and just the right size. Tim our waiter was spot on on all of his recommendations including a nice moderately priced Wine."

  • "A good friend of ours told us about this outstanding off-the-beaten-track place and we were not disappointed. The food was excellent -- we particularly enjoyed the roasted fig, pancetta, goat cheese and hazelnuts appetizer, and the papparedelle della nona was delicious. Service was terrific and the place had a very comfortable atmosphere. We'll be back next time we're in town."

  • "Pasta dishes very well done in presentation and taste; caesar salad bland; wine list adequate; background noise a bit overpowering; waitpersons very friendly; suggest sound absorption material to walls/ceiling."

  • "Vinticello is our go-to venue for things like anniversaries and birthdays. The service is not the best in the world, for example when comparing with places in Paris or Amsterdam. However, for an American Restaurant it's very good. The food is very consistently delicious, and the ambiance is intimate without being too cloistered. I always recommend this to people who are in San Francisco and looking for a consistently good no-surprises dining experience."

  • "We had a great meal in a nice setting with great service. Our only regret was that we had not allowed enough time there before we had to rush off to the opera. We will return to enjoy the whole Venticello experience."

  • "The restaurant was recommended to us we were disappointed in the service. It was terrible. The waiter complained that he was tired and didn't do anything for us. He took our order and disappeared throughout the meal. He never came back to ask if we wanted dessert or coffee. We left out of frustration. Food was ok - nothing special. Restaurant was very small and loud - you would have to like to listen to your neighbor for this to work. Will not go back."

  • "Venticello has the food, service, and ambience to make it a top special event venue (we were celebrating a PhD graduation), yet the friendly, helpful staff makes you want to make it a once-a-week treat. (Alas, we don't live in the Bay Area, or we would!)"

  • "Popped in on a whim Friday evening around 8:30pm. We started with 2 scampi fra diavlo. Very good and SPICY if a bit overdone. The gnocchi were lighter than air, and the Gorgonzola not too overpowering. The papparedelle was solid but the real winner was the fettuccine con salsiccia. I'm not a huge fennel fan, but this sausage was wonderful and paired beautifully with the tomato cream sauce. The service was superb, would recommend to others and return myself!"

  • "The chef must have a giant shaker labeled "Italian seasoning" because the food had a uniformly over seasoned taste to it. It was so peppery that my dining companion did not even eat her main course. I don't think I'd even give this restaurant a second chance."
    Dined on 6/13/2014
  • "We were very underwhelmed. We had heard great things, but thought the food was so-so, especially for the price. Notably, the bread was shockingly bad: despite being in SF, the city of fantastic bread, and the fact that there's a wood-burning stove in the center of the dining room, the bread is soggy, tasteless focaccia. Some of the dishes were unnecessarily heavy. And there were almost no decent California wines on the wine list - bizarre. Overall, meh."
