Venable, the name of Carrboro from 1912-1913, takes inspiration from the rich culinary offerings of our area. Think freshly roasted chicken from our in-house rotisserie, a bistro salad topped with a fried local duck egg, or a burger made from ground chuck and short rib topped with Hatch green chilis.   • "We arrived for our 6:45 reservation. Since our table was not yet ready, we spent a bit of time at the bar. When some minutes passed, they served a bit of table bread with the wine. It was a thoughtful gesture. My veggie burger and roll were "extra" crisp, but delicious. My friends orders came exactly as ordered. Our waiter was attentive, but not at our elbows. We sat in a lovely window spot which made it quieter than in the middle of the floor, a nice bonus. We were not rushed at all, a Wednesday night, and had a relaxing, delicious time."

  • "My husband I love to go to Venable for Sunday Brunch and those meals have been fantastic. So, we decided to take some out-of-town guests for a weeknight dinner. Unfortunately, but not all of the meals were great. My Mahi Mahi was on the dry side and was pretty tasteless, but the tuna tartare appetizer was a hit."

  • "GLAD THEY HAVE A GOOD LOCATION BECAUSE THAT'S THE ONLY THING SAVING THIS RESTURANT. THE FRIED CHICKEN WAS DRY AND DISAPPOINTING. THE WHIPPED POTATOES WERE PASTE LIKE AND NO TEXTURE AT ALL. ALL I ENJOYED WAS THE PRESSED COFFEE AND PANNA COTA AND BLACK RASPBERRY ICE CREAM WHICH JUST REQUIRED SPOONING UP."

  • "We took a visiting professor to venable a few days ago and we couldn't have made a better choice. Venable has a unique vibe, great selection of beers on draught, and phenomenal food. The friend chicken, vegetarian tamales, rotisserie chicken, salads, and mashed potatoes were all incredibly delicious. We will definitely be coming back!"

  • "My wife and I enjoyed a delicious Sunday brunch of Salmon Cakes Benedict (a special entre) that included two small English muffin halves topped with tomato slice, Salmon cake, and Hollandaise sauce with a side of fruit (that we substituted for potatoes). Delicious! French press coffee was also good. Recommended - you will not be disappointed."

  • "My friends and I dine at The Venable several times a month, especially on Wednesdays. Those evenings have wine at half price and we usually devour at least 2 bottles. I have never had a bad meal. Actually we find their menu compelling because there really is something for everyone. My favorite lately is the caesar salad with salmon because the salmon is never over cooked and I love medium rare salmon. My other choice is usually the udon noodle dish with scallion pancakes (amazing blend of healthy ingredients). Other favorites for our group are the rotisserie chicken, steak, and that bone-in pork chop. Oh, yes the service equals the quality of the food!"

  • "My husband chose Venable for his birthday dinner. We had been there several times before, and this time was the best. We both wolfed down too much wonderful crusty bread with tasty herbed butter before the main dish arrived. Both of our meals were savory and delicious, just the way we like them. We are tea drinkers and love the fact that we can get large or small press pots of tea to last throughout the meal."

  • "My husband and I are not vegetarians, but some of the dishes for vegans or vegetarians sounded so good that we each ordered one of them. They did not disappoint! My porcini ravioli with herbed pecan cream sauce was wonderful. His vegetable tamale was so fresh tasting and delightfully spicy. One person in our party of 4 did get the rotisserie chicken dish and loved it. The 2 desserts our group ordered were enjoyable - especially the chocolate profiteroles with caramel ice cream. We will definitely be returning to this restaurant."

  • "The food here was always good, but it has gotten consistently better. The service if always great and the atmosphere is lively. I so appreciate the symbols on the menu for GF, AGF, V, Vegan. Nice to know what you are eating and to make healthy choices! I used to love Acme and Provence, but having been there recently and also to Venable, I find the others overpriced and not as creative as Venable. Venable is my new favorite!"

  • "I met a friend for dinner for her birthday and had a great night! The staff was wonderful, the food amazing, and they offer a free desert with a candle. They are very conscious of labeling and serving Vegan, Vegetarian and GF - so great to know exactly what is on the menu! We sat at the adorable table in the windowed alcove- so scenic and special. My rye manhattan was perfectly executed. The fried chicken with arugula salad and herb whipped potatoes was interesting comfort food at its best. Special shout-out to our server who was attentive and very helpful. We'll keep coming back, for sure."

"Cane Creek Farm Plate" was one of best appetizers we've had anywhere, entrees & wine were delicious, and the "Harry & Sally" cocktail with our dessert finished the experience perfectly.   • "Pork tenderloin dish was amazing, full of flavor, nicely presented and delicious. Service was great. However, my friends meals well...the half rotisserie chicken was barely warm with cold rubbery skin and the fried chicken was tasteless and dry. The sides on both of those entrees were good though. I really like that the menu is marked with gluten free options and that most dishes can be made gluten free. I will be back, just not ordering any chicken."

  • "If you like open range rotisserie chicken, this place is the best. The South is the land of fried chicken so when I find a place that boasts its rotisserie chicken on its menu, well I got to trys me some. So I did and it was indeed good. A bit pricey for chicken if you ask me but hey, it's Carrboro, the Paris of the South, and it is a bistro we're talking about. So just imagine yourself in the "onzieme arrondisement" enjoying a glass of "Dubonnet" and eating your "poulet roti" and if you succeed in doing that, the chicken is a bargain. The Porcini Mushroom ravioli in cream sauce was a tad on the rich side but good and filling. The Bresaola and arugula appetizer was good and all ingredients fresh and well seasoned. Excellent service."

  • "I am writing a positive review even though the Root Vegetable Chicken Pot Pie was the worst entree I've had in years. It was really bad. However, my overall experience, both this time and each time I've been there, has been consistently excellent. Venable is a notch below a white linen type of place, but for classy neighborhood spot, it is excellent. Wild Mushroom Ragout and our other appetizer were both excellent. and other entree were decent."

  • "I ordered the rotissiere pork shoulder....was served delicious braised red cabbage, slightly roasted pears, and a pile of dry pulled pork. The herb mashed potatoes were not herby and resembled wallpaper paste. Companion's rotissiere chicken was good although nothing special. Service was friendly and efficient. Won't be rushing back."

Spouse had the delicious chicken w. Beautiful fries & root veggies, roasted. Our friends had cob salads and the soup.. Curried squash .. Everyone raved! Looks like good wine selections, too. No one imbibed that night. Definitely will return! Service lovely! So nice to eat really beautifully prepared food that us sophisticated yet not fussy and frou-frou.. No foams here, thank goodness. Obviously they are true foodies . Carborro is well known for the good restaurants and serious food lovers. Thanks Venable!!!"

  • "I took a foodie friend visiting from out of town on Sat. night. Even though I made a very last-minute reservation, we were greeted and seated promptly. My friend asked to taste a couple of different wines before making his selection and our waiter was gracious and accommodating. Upon the recommendation of our server, I went with the classic rotisserie chicken and asked to substitute Brussels sprouts for the veggie medley. The chicken was divine -- tender and juicy, perfectly seasoned, as were the sprouts. My friend had the vegetarian tamales, which were very flavorful and beautifully plated. We shared the caponata as an appetizer and wished for more."

Attentive wait staff, relatively quiet even though it was packed (we sat in a booth next to the bar), the birthday was recognized -- all-in-all it couldn't have been better.
