A word from Va de Vi Bistro & Wine Bar
Va de Vi translates to "It's all about wine!" in Spain's Catalan language. Of course, it's all about food, too! Executive Chef Andy Phillips' menu encourages diners to explore and share a variety of eclectic, international small plate portions. Bold tastes encourage diners to explore the large international wine list, easily navigated by tasting notes. Many wines are offered by the glass in addition to pre-arranged flights to allow diners to compare different wines and discover new favorites. A warm, casual elegance defines the ambiance. Outdoors, dine under an ancient oak tree or grab a table in the picturesque lane.

Diner Reviews
  • "Was really impressed with the lechon. Great take on a Filipino delicacy. Will be back for more. "

  • "Great food and outstanding service. Perfect for special events. Worth the money :)"

  • "Had dinner for two - selected a variety (about 6) of the small plates (like tapas or pinxas in Spain, but these were a bit larger and a lot pricier than the Spanish versions). Each was a work of art on its own. We each had a separate wine flight (3 of 3 oz each) - all the wines were at least good and at least one in each set very good. The place was busy but not noisy and the service was excellent. Can definitely recommend it."

  • "We had a terrific time at Va de Vi! Food was delicious and the wait staff was so attentive. Perfect Pear is a favorite drink!"

  • "My wife and I lunch at Va de Vi a couple of times a month. We agreed that our latest lunch included some of the best items we've had at Va de Vi and that the quality level had returned to its highest. There was a potato soup that was stunning. Wanted to order a quart and take it home. That was the highlight, and we definitely recommend that as a sensational first course. Other offerings were up to their old high standards."

  • "I love the small plates for interesting tastes! Love the choice of flights of well chosen wines!"

  • "Our waiter was prompt, polite, and helpful. The food (and wine) was very good, overall. We tried the kale salad, empanadas, treviso risotto, pommes frites, mac and cheese (meatless), greek chicken skewers, and bbq pork bao. Biggest hits were the empenadas (delicious with or without the spicy chipotle sauce), risotto (savory and cheesy), and chicken (nicely seasoned, tender and juicy). We weren't crazy about the pork bao. It had an interesting accompaniment of thai-style mango salad, but the pork flavor seemed a little lost among the bun. The pommes frites were garlic fries, plain and simple. Good, but nothing special. For dessert we had the blondie brownie, lemon meringue tart, and profiteroles. All were delicious. Highly recommend!"

  • "First time here, although we've driven by many times. The food preparation was great, each dish was a little masterpiece, and the various wine flights offered gave the evening a little adventure. Service was very good as the wait staff all help each other bringing the food to the table when it's ready. The prices are on the higher side, but the offerings are unique. We'll be back."

  • "I have been to Va De Vi many times and always have had great small plates and great wine."

  • "Comfortable dining on fresh local foods served superbly. Fun to share. Fun to taste wine flights. Excellent service. Ever changing menu encourages dining there frequently without ever losing the surprise element. Never found a dish not to be great. Noise level outside is minimal. Inside in the middle of the restaurant tables are set so close it inhibits privacy. Those areas have only a few inches between tables. Particularly uncomfortable if sitting next to people from whom you'd rather keep your conversation private. In the front and outside provide adequatevprivacy."

  • "My favorite spot for creative and flavor-packed, share-able (not small) plates and wines-by-the-glass. Equally suitable for business or romance. Favorites include the red Thai curry "soup shot", the arnacini with Calabrian chile jam, and the lechon over rice cakes. Have yet to find a dish that missed the mark on multiple visits. Always eager to return. Highly recommended."

  • "The savory Braised Beef Short Ribs serving size was modest although there was a generous amount of polenta. The dessert - Bread Pudding with Huckleberry Sauce was a child-sized portion, so it's fine if you want a sample- size. Even the Iced Tea was served in a smaller glass than one expects. It was more like a Highball glass"

  • "Everything was great, the service, the wine, the food... I'll just list the highlights: mushroom risotto, lamb ravioli, crispy artichokes and the apple crostada. They have a great wine list with some really interesting flights. I would highly recommend this restaurant for lunch or dinner. They also have a small but, really pretty outdoor seating area. Definitely one of the best restaurants in Walnut Creek."

  • "Va de Vi Bistro is terrific! The food is delicious and I like ordering a bunch of small plates to share. My husband has a dairy allergy, so the waitress and chef went through the entire menu and personalized it just for him. Pretty awesome! The wine and drink menus are great. I really like the Lakeside Lemonade. Dessert menu has lots of great options too. The atmosphere is fun, vibrant and decorated well. This restaurant is right in downtown Walnut Creek too!"

  • "We had a delightful lunch that included chicken skewers (grilled to perfection) fried artichokes, crab cakes and much more, including a light and perfect tasting Honig Sauvignon Blanc wine. Serving staff were fun and efficient and helped make our day. Definitely will return for more of the food, wine and ambience."

  • "Always love coming to Va de Vi. Service is great and food is always delicious. I like the small plates to share and try a little of every thing. Nice little place for romantic date night."

  • "The food was small in size, only fair in quality and over-priced. Yet, the wine was very good and the outdoor dining venue was nice."

  • "I feel sorry for people that don't research a place before they go. It is so easy to do. So all the people that inappropriately complain about the small serving sizes, please order the risoto. I am now starting to look for places that have rational amounts of food. I'm finding a strong correlation to cooking creativity and mindful ingredient selection. Here is our strategy: we order for the table so we get to taste many excellent dishes. It was also wonderful that the chefs don't use salt as a crutch. The only negative thing that came of it is now the decision of where we are going to dine in Walnut Creek becomes even more difficult. This is a great place!"

  • "My favorite place in walnut creek! Always great good and service. Most haves: crab cakes, black cod, cauliflower dish and chocolate soufle dessert."

  • "The food is great, the service is simpatic. This is a place to have a good experience with small portions and special flavor. The only problem is about the noise, too loud."
    Dined on 3/3/2014
  • "Very enjoyable. The food is fun, interesting and varied. Our party of five ranged in age from 13 to Methusaleh (me) and the choices captured us all. Our server, enthusiastic and knowledgable, told us not to feel bound by any menu boundaries; everything was flexible. Save room for the profiteroles."

  • "The food was great, as usual. The service was better than in the past, but could be stepped up a notch. I recommend this place to all my friends who enjoy wonderful food and a great selection of wines."

  • "It was just alright. The food wasn't memorable nor the wine."
    Dined on 2/21/2014
  • "If only it was easier to get a reservation! One caveat--while the food is fabulous, it's very easy to run up quite a tab while consuming small plates and small flights."
    Dined on 2/20/2014
  • "This place is consistently good. Food is good, service is pleasant and helpful, though there are occasional lapses. But there's never any attitude, which is great. Nice to be able sit outside even when it isn't hot -- they have heatlamps. Inside can get very noisy."

  • "If you think the service has been a bit off lately you wouldn't be wrong -- but give these guys another chance!! The General Manager is on it!! The food is fabulous and I am confident that the service will get back to it's usual standard of amazing. The Lechon and Frites are NOT to be missed here!!"

  • "In the middle of the shopping area, Va di Vi is the perfect spot for a bite or a lunch. The service was relaxed, so we felt no pressure to hurry. We were seated next to a serving station and across from the kitchen access, so the ambience wasn't the best. It was a little too cool to sit outside, a much more attractive area along a small alleyway. The food was delicious, especially the cauliflower gratin and butternut squash, which was grilled with sage and butter. The molten chocolate dessert was more this worth the 15 minute wait! In between were sliders, ahi tuna tartare and a flight off red wines. My only wish was that the service was a little more focused on the presentation. The staff just dropped the plates on the table and departed."

  • "Food and service were both very good, I liked the wine flights, a great way to try different styles of wine with the meal. Worth a second (or third) trip and one I would take friends to."

  • "This was an excellent choice for a romantic lunch. No, not candlelight and quiet, dimly lit romance. I mean, great ambience, sharing of food and fantastic wine. Plus excellent service. I've also been there in the evening for dinner on a weekend. Then it's much more lively, crowded and vibrant. A fun place for dinner also."

  • "As always, great food, great selection of wines, and was able to enjoy a beautiful afternoon sitting outside to soak it all in. Great way to enjoy a birthday!!"

  • "Neat little restaurant with signage on Mt. Diablo but an entrance off the street. Small plates, good wine list (flights if desired). Also full bar. Attentive friendly staff but not hovering/in your face. Cozy room (we sat inside) with a really good feel. Nice seating outdoors "in the alley" too. Go back? Yes!"

  • "Took my friend their for her birthday luncheon. The food was quite perfect. Began with the chopped salad. We thought the risotto and brussels sprouts were amazing. Sampled/shared the four demi-desserts and each was delicious."

  • "My guest and I had a lot to catch up on and the waitress was great about giving us plenty of time, checking back without urgency or press. She had excellent wine advice and staged the delivery of dishes just right."

  • "Awesome as always! The one very minor negative part was our server. He was just not very happy or personable. Maybe he had a bad day. Everything else was why we always go back to Va de Vi!"

  • "Celebrated my one year anniversary here. The people were super helpful and the food was wonderful. They brought out the wrong dish but I didn't make a fuss about it. I just mentioned it was a minor mistake and they brought out my proper order in great time. I am def coming back! I believe they didn't charge me my corkage either since I was celebrating. Lovely gesture. The ambiance was nice as well. I can't wait to go back!"
