Diner Reviews
  • "I enjoyed the sweetbreads, biscuits, cocktails, and pot de creme. Duck confit was surprisingly dry, but all accompaniments to the dish were paired well. Beef cheeks were a bit under seasoned. Good value for portion size. Attentive service."

  • "Wonderful dishes with layers of flavors from the salads through main dishes and desserts. I requested a substitution for the pickled greens and received wonderful sautéed vegetables with lardons that were to die for. Unfortunately, the grits that were supposed to be under my chicken were missing, but they did provide once I pointed it out."

  • "Urban Solace is my go-to choice when I want to go somewhere with excellent food, service and a diverse menu. I've gone several times with groups of 6 or more, several with food restrictions, where everyone ordered something different off the menu and not one person was disappointed with their meal - a rarity in my experience. Great cocktails, an excellent wine menu and a knowledgeable, friendly staff, Urban Solace is a great place for foodies without the San Diego snooty-foodie attitude."

  • "I always enjoy the food at Urban Solace. The service is always great. Thanks for another great dinner!"

  • "This is a solid though not spectacular restaurant. Seating on the patio is quite pleasant. Service is good. The mustard-crusted mahi mahi was moist and expertly prepared."

  • "The food and service is always spot on. It was my second visit to the restaurant and there will definitely be future visits. The cheese board was generous-- I didn't care for the think crisps they served so they promptly brought additional slices of fig bread. The skirt steak was cooked to a perfect medium rare. The fries are to die for."

  • "Stopped in before swing dance lessons at Queen Bee's (block+ away and also recommended) for quick dinner and server recommended the Sea Bass (she ordered it) and Meatloaf (ordered for myself). Both were UNBELIEVABLY good and we would both order both of them again. Server was attentive and helpful without being overbearing even though we were one of only 4 tables eating in the early evening. Manager also came by to check on our satisfaction (emma) and commented she was a big fan of both of our dishes. While I had been to Urban Solace before for happy hour and blunch, this was OUR first time for dinner. If you haven't visited US you need to. Five stars food, service and fun. p.s. yes, that is a picture of Ron Burgundy on the Bar wall."

  • "Alas, I didn't take a photo of what we ate, as the presentation was quite good. I had the not your mama's meatloaf which was very tasty (mix of lamb, beef and pork, I think). I was a bit skeptical about the mixture thing but it was quite good. I stole some of my son's hanger steak and that was fantastic. A poster of Will Ferrell was very prominent over the bar area and I have to ask what the connection there is. Forgot to ask."

  • "Saw this on tv and couldn't wait to try it! The food was inventive and delicious! Our server Dennis was great! Overall a wonderful experience."

  • "I love both Solace and Urban Solace. (I only wish they hosted jazz music. It's my only complaint.) The food is super, they offer a terrific gluten free menu and have a decent kids menu. I wish their brunches started earlier but when I could eat gluten, the biscuits and gravy were worth the wait. I'm glad this gem in my neighborhood. Eat your heart out!"

  • "So far the biscuits and deserts have been solid standouts, fantastic even. The service has always been knowledgeable, prompt and friendly."

  • "We have been here twice and the food is very good. The noise level is a bit loud for conversation but not unbearable... they were nice to seat us in a more secluded section. It is advisable to make reservations on a Friday night... there was a huge line to get in when we left. Good experiences and would recommend."

  • "This is our second visit to Urban Solace and both times, we have appreciated the food's high quality and the excellent service. The watermelon salad was delicious. We dined early on this occasion; so the happy hour was an added bonus."

  • "From overseas. Came for dinner. Ambience was nice, chose to sit outside but you can smell the smoke from the streets, couldn't be helped. Service was fine, friendly, basic, average, enough. Food wise; ordered the biscuits (savory scones) which were excellent. Must try! Mains; 1/2 roast chicken with grits; very average, skip. Pork belly: well cooked, garnished with spring onions/green onions and coriander/cilantro. So I think a side of creamy, cheesey, mashed potatoes is out of place. Braised beef cheeks; had better, better than the chicken. Steak; best of the 4, ordered medium, must be the cut because it was quite "stringey" and tough - should have ordered medium rare or rare. Disappointed, wasn't disastrous. Wouldn't return."

  • "I think my expectations were set too high. The food was very good but a little high for the selection, quality and creativity."

  • "Walking in, we were greeted very warmly and loved our server. I wish I could remember his name. We sat outside in the patio and it was very cute. Some funky art on the walls and draping lights. The food is a little pricey. We paid about 23 for their meatloaf plate and almost 18 dollars for chicken and dumplings. I thought it was all just Ok (except for the biscuits! YUMMMMM), but my boyfriend loved everything."

  • "These were the best Fried Oysters I've ever had. Including the sauce. (And I'm from Maryland!!). The Beef Cheeks were outstanding as well. I'll be back!"

  • "Chicken and dumplings were delicious. Hangar steak was cooked perfect and the tartare was yummy. Urban also has good selection of beers and great cocktails. Service is always excellent as usual."

  • "This was our second time here and the experience was just as good as the first time. The menu has options that should meet anyone's needs and the wine prices are excellent. Alyson, our server, provided us with good information as we were narrowing down our choices and it was a pleasure having her interact with us. The overall meal is a great value for such good and interesting food. Four of us each had a dinner and we shared three appetizers/sides and two bottles of wine and the bill was about $200. The outside dining area really reminds me of New Orleans. If it ever rains in San Diego again, I would love to eat out there and enjoy the experience."

  • "GREAT sums up the experience my wife and I just had here. We decided to try Urban Solace for the first time for my wife's birthday and will definitely be coming back. The service was great, attentive but not pushy. Our waitress gave us recomendations when we asked but never forced anything on us. The drinks were well mixed and unique. And of course, the food! The duckaroni was rich and creamy but the arugula kept it from becoming to thick with each bite. We had the tuna chop chop, hanger steak and pork belly as well which were all familiar yet unique with their additions and sides. GREAT"

  • "I never thought I would find chicken n' dumplings that could rival mine, but these are pretty darn close. The fried sage and firm dumplings made me forget howuch I disliked drop dumplings. Our waitress was pure perfection and was able to answer every question. Next time I'm in SD I will definitely visit Urban Solace."

  • "Right out of the chute, we were informed that they don't carry "the usual name-brand" liquors. This is a problem if you are Grey Goose martini drinkers. And, we are. The organic vodka we were offered instead, didn't compare. The appetizers were ok. Yellow tail chop chop -- very average, fried oysters -- good. My friend got the duck confit and she said it was delicious. Others at my table ordered the sea bass (over sauced) and the quinoa burger (good). Lastly, I had the burger with avocado. The garlic was overpowering. They pride themselves on the organic meat and yet I couldn't even taste it. All that I could taste was garlic. A very disappointing night considering the amount of great restaurants around town."

  • "We typically love Urban Solace and like to take our friends there. That being said, of the four people in our party, one had what a really good meal ("Pulled Chicken and Dumplings"). Both of the Sea Bass orders were over cooked and smelled fishy. The Beef Cheeks were fattier than I remember. While the meat tasted good, the ribbon of fat running through made it difficult to eat."

  • "Be prepared to be wowed! They aren't kidding, the 'Not your mothers meat loaf' is nothing like my mom ever made. This is my new fav restaurant in San Diego."

  • "We'd been to Urban Solace once before several months ago and were eager to find an excuse to return. The atmosphere and decor can only be described as early miscellaneous and oddly welcoming. It did feel a bit like coming home, even though we'd only been there once before. Allison was our waitress and was wonderful; a marvelous advisor for choices to be made. Some of our party was late getting to the restaurant, but there was no problem getting a table for those on time and service while waiting. The food is very unique (I had the Duck Confit with allspice rub-YUM!2 of us had the Chicken and Dumplings and 2 the prime rib special.) Everyone was pleased with their choices. Desserts were WOW! It is pricey, but overall, SO worth-it!"

  • "Dining at Urban Solace is exactly that….peace and quiet in the midst of a noisy neighborhood. Sitting in the patio, it is as if the world has fallen away and you are left to enjoy artistically presented and delicious food. This was the first time for the friend I had invited, who has food allergies and the chef gladly accommodated her requests for altering the menu item. Our server was attentive and the meal quite enjoyable."

  • "I LOVE Urban Solace and it has yet to disappoint. I haven't been here in over a year and the familiar favorites were still on the menu and were delicious! This place is ideal for brunch or date night."

  • "We have eaten at Urban Solace many times for lunch and dinner and never been disappointed. This fact held true for our first brunch there last Sunday on Father's Day. We had a delightful and tasty brunch for four. The food was great as always. We started with the delicious biscuits, a must. The food served around the table included the Salmon Eggs Benedict, Kitchen Sink Biscuits and Gravy, EGBLT and the Beef Cheeks Hash. Everyone loved their food and left with full bellies."

  • "The wait staff was very helpful regarding the beer and dessert selection. And my main entree was good. I am disappointed that they seem to have taken the fried green tomatoes off their menu, as this was my favorite appetizer. I've tried the shrimp and grits twice now and have been disappointed with it both times. Although the grits were creamy, it was rather bland, and the shrimp were tough. But otherwise, my food was good, and the black velvet cake was amazing."

  • "Went there Saturday evening to celebrate our anniversary and because of my hearing it took a while to find a table that was quiet. They were terrific at working with me. Then came great food and service. Food was very fun and yummy. Go for the watermelon salad while they have it."
