Diner Reviews
  • "I set up a reservation for a group of friends and I to celebrate my husband's Birthday, the food and service were great! choices to fit any appetite.. we look forward to our next visit."

  • "Union is not a 'typical bar and grill'. It's a well conceived, expertly operated high-quality restaurant masquerading under a bar & grill cover. This is as well put-together and professionally managed restaurant as there is in the San Diego area. The food, service and ambiance were all excellent."

  • "The menu looked interesting, but yelp reviews made the food sound blah. We were very pleasantly surprised. The main bar/food area is loud, but the hostesses honored our request for a quiet table; we had a wonderful table in the back. The food was very interesting and flavorful. Green salad/crispy egg and beet salads were both very tasty/interesting and larger than expected. Cocktails were also much better than expected: the smoked peach drink was a real treat. The sweet potato ravioli had a beautiful foam but was a little too heavy (buttery). Others enjoyed the burger and many other dishes. Great meal and experience in Encinitas! It compared favorably to Solace too."

  • "A group of us came here for lunch the other weekend. It was a warm sunny weekend and Union has a very nice open bar area that is a pretty happening spot. Sadly, we were placed in the backroom area which isn't open to the outside at all. Would recommend if you come here to never sit in the side room to the right. Service was excellent, even though we were hidden from everyone, we were consistently checked up on and never had to wait long for our food or drinks. Brunch was fairly decent, its a short but well done menu."

  • "Booked for birthday lunch on a saturday after looking at lunch menu on line. But surprise -- the lunch menu is not available on saturdays!!what? Just a combo brunch /lunch menu which sucked. Lame!"

  • "Had the beet salad and added salmon - it was delicious. My husband had the pastrimi and a pale ale and enjoyed it. Food was very nicely presented and good portion size . But almost $50 for a pub lunch is a little much."

  • "Our first visit was brunch. Do try the breakfast shot! And what a great selection of local craft brews. The menu is quite imaginative. We returned a few weeks later with out-of-town friends for lunch. The food was quite a bit more uneven unfortunately. Only 1 of the 4 dishes had anything going for it (a special, jambayla, I think); the other 3 were very mediocre. But would return. Every place has an off day."

  • "I loved the dim lighting and the rustic atmoshere. I had the lamb shepherds pie and I cant wait to get it again. Our waitress was so helpful with our beer selection, happily bringing us samples when we could't choose. For me the Stone Smoked Porter was perfect with this meal."

  • "Unfortunately the service was terrible and food was only fair. We will not recommend this site for dining. They have a lively night club atmosphere and it's a good place for a drink but not to dine. Maybe they just a bad day after a night of partying being that it was New Years day."

  • "We've been to Union Kitchen & Tap many times and love it. This visit was great because they were able to accommodate a large party with 5 kids quickly! Our server (unfortunately I don't remember her name) was fantastic and very easy going, which is great when dealing with kiddos! Food service was quick and the food was delicious. We love the beignets as a starter and the bacon bloody marys are always yummy! I also especially love the grits."

  • "Very good with young children, unique menu, attentive and friendly service...all you need to have a great dinner in Encinitas. The poutine is a local interpretation of a well known dish in Quebec. Well done."

  • "I was sad to see "When in Rome," the former restaurant in that location, go. Thinking nothing could replace it. I was wrong. The Union is a great place to dine. Everyone I've taken there has said the same."

  • "Thanks to the reviews on Open Table, we tried Union for Saturday brunch. The rustic decor and football on the abundant TV screens was very inviting. The wait staff was very attentive and we started with excellent spicy bloody mary's. The menu was filled with our favorites. The beniets were amazing as were each of our entrees. We will definitely be back!"

  • "My husband, and I took our college age daughter (20) for dinner and we all had a great time. Sports on TV for my husband, great food and wine for me and the ambiance was well liked by our daughter. Great energy, but not too loud. We were in a booth and could easily talk amongst ourselves. I was also please that we were seated immediately, even though when I made the reservation for 2 (didn't know our daughter would be joining us), they happily put us a great booth table when we told them we now had 3."

  • "This was our fourth or fifth time at Union -- we go every time we visit San Diego -- and the first time we sat in the more intimate area off to the right. Fantastic!! From the cocktails to our mains, everything was spot on. Try the Sazerac and you won't be disappointed."

  • "We had a party of 6. Three had the flatbread pizza and loved it. The other three had the duck and it was alittle too salty for all of them"

  • "Crazy crowded and noisy. Waitress was nice, but not very educated. Started to pour our bottle of wine without letting us taste it. Then she said, "but you said you'd had it before..." Hello? Food was pretty average. Would not bother to go back."

  • "Pricey but good. I had a salad and added salmon $20! It was delicious but that was a little much for lettuce and salmon. Had the sangria which was also very good. Hubby had a pastrami Reuben which he really enjoyed"
