Diner Reviews
  • "We have been here multiple times and both the service (Brett this time) and food are exceptional. "

  • "We attended an event at the State Theater and enjoyed having dinner here. Excellent appetizers included fried oysters and braised octopus. We ordered two different kinds of fish for entrée and the grilled Chilean sea bass was prepared extremely well--not overcooked and delicious. The tables were close together fairly so it was difficult for us to have a conversation. Otherwise we would recommend to others and will return again. "

  • "This was our first time here. I ordered the sea bass, which was outstanding. I also had an excellent crab cake. Our waiter was funny and he didn't hurry us. He did a great job. He also made sure that we got to our play on time. Thank you."

  • "My husband and I came in for dinner at 8:15 on a Friday and enjoyed a truly great meal. The tuna sashimi, salmon tartare, and beef carpaccio were just incredible. I was a little apprehensive to try the somewhat eclectic combinations, such as the foie gras, apple, and arugula with the tuna but I am so glad I did as this was the best tuna preparation I have ever had the privilege to enjoy. The white bean giardiniera that accompanied the buttery rich ribeye carpaccio was a perfect balance of puckery brine, fresh, crisp and salt. The sea bass with pickled grapes and braised cabbage? Crisp and rich, yet moist and light. The meal was complete with the olive oil and salt dark chocolate ganache with grilled crostini. Absolutely perfect."

  • "The food was average at best, overpriced, and the portions were extremely small. Other than the service, which was good, below average all around. If you want to eat here, go quick, because this place won't be in business long."

  • "Apperizers were good but the entrees were not, and terribly over priced. I will not return nor recommend."

  • "The meal was a joke! There were four of us each had a cocktail, we ordered ceviche! Then two of us had the ahi sashimi, one had crab cakes, and the other the tartare! It was seriously a one bite meal! Very disappointing and the bill was 180$ Won't be going back!"

  • "A great spot to catch dinner before a show at the Orpheum or State theatres. Our server was friendly and informative, made great suggestions on the menu."
    Dined on 4/5/2014
  • "Our server was smug & not knowledgeable about some menu items. They brought rolls, but no butter. For apps, the tartare lacked in flavor & did not come with the toast points, as described. Lobster corn dogs were good, not great. Shrimp & grits came with tiny baby shrimp. He recommended specialty items for entrées, but failed to mention that they don't come with anything else on the plate, & didn't suggest we order any sides, which we would have. 1/2 ordered the scallops, 1/2 skate wing. They were tasty, but not remarkable. They were out of Ahi at 8:15. For a high-end seafood restaurant, there are not that many choices. For a Saturday night, it was only averagely busy & lacking in energy."

  • "The octopus appetizer is something to not miss. I've had deep fried and sushi octopus at other restaurants but never one this tasty, tender, or uniquely presented (affordably priced too!). The salad presentation was nearly as eye catching. My wife ordered the Maine lobster and again, highly impressed. No complaints on my New York Strip although I could have done nearly as well at home. I was expecting more tender, but again, no complaints."

  • "If it weren't for our server, we would have not been more adventurous to try new foods. He was able to give explicit details about the food, including where the protien was caught. Even when we hesitated from our end about certian thngs, he asked us to trust him about the choice, which we did! The food was fresh and unique! The ambience was warm and inviting. A gem of a restaurant in Mpls!"

  • "I had read a number of reviews for "the Market" and these were mixed. To my surprise, we had a very nice meal of fresh seafood with a complement of great service. We were a bit disappointed at the absence of calamari, but that opened a window of opportunity to try the octopus. It was fabulous. We shared the baby kale salad which was a very fresh and tasty tweak on the common Caesar. The sea bass was flaky and fresh, and the scallops were made tangy with the added beet accompaniment. Ice cream trios and cappuccinos elegantly finished off our feast."

  • "Although pricey, the food was excellent. I had the salmon, grilled with an herb butter sauce, accompanied by delicious brussel sprouts and puréed potatoes. The portions are very generous and nicely presented. Two disappointments: first the white wines available by the glass were very limited and also pricey. And second was the service - it was adequate - we got our food and drinks but the touches that raise service above perfunctory were missing. The restaurant wasn't really busy but other than to take our order, and deliver the food we only saw our server once before she brought the bill. For these prices which are comparable to those at Oceanaire, I would go to Oceanaire where they manage to make every dining experience feel special."

  • "I have read many reviews about Union Fish Market and was excited to finally visit for a pre-theater dinner. It had a nice wine list, interesting menu and nice atmosphere. However both our server and food took forever. Although we gave ourselves 1 1/2 hrs for dinner, didn't order apps or dessert we were 20 minutes late for our show. I had the skate wing which was very good, although the broccoli crisps where a bit overpowering for a fish dish. We purchased a side of potato puffs, which were unseasoned, overcooked and could have come from the frozen food aisle. My friend ordered the rainbow trout, which was good, but nothing special for a fish-focused restaurant. I will go back again because of the reviews to see if I get a better experience."

  • "We've been to the Union twice in the past week and found it lacking both times. About the only thing that was good was the fresh-out-of-oven bread. Otherwise, the food was lacking in flavor. We had 3 different kinds of potatoes and didn't like any of them. Had we been blindfolded we would have had no idea what we were eating as far as our entree's and dessert went. Not worth the money and we won't be back."

  • "The food was beautiful and completely divine. We had a variety of menu items and everything was superb from the cocktails to the dessert. The shrimp corndog appetizers were crisp and juicy and completely delightful. The Wisconsin rainbow trout was brilliant and the olive oil cake blew my mind."

  • "Great place to eat. Very nice menu with lots of exciting and "non-traditional" options. Well prepared and presented plates, very tasty. Had a very enjoyable evening."

  • "I had scallops, which were prepared well and had a very good flavor, but I would like to have seen a wider selection of seafood (i love grouper, halibut, red and yellow snapper, etc)."

  • "Enjoyed the Rooftop for a pre dinner cocktail--with huge snowflakes falling!! Dinner in the Fish Market was excellent from start to finish. Early reservation, before the crowd was a good time to be there."

  • "My sister and I used a coupon for one app to share, two salads, two entrees, and one dessert, so we got to sample the entire menu. We chose a raw seafood appetizer - the scallop crudo. It was uniquely flavorful and unlike anything I'd tasted before. The salads were excellent - the Caesar was similar to one I've had for lunch at Union Rooftop. We both had the chilean sea bass - cooked to perfection and again a unique preparation (included pickled grapes, ajo blanco, and tiny raw peppers). For dessert we had the baked Alaska, something classic I'd never had before. I'm not a huge dessert person but my sister liked it. Overall the seafood options were unique for Minneapolis and the preparations were out of the ordinary (and tasty!)."

  • "Thoroughly enjoyed the evening and experience. Used a Living Social voucher which allowed us to experience the full menu. From the oyster appetizer all the way through the kale salad, ahi tuna and Chilean sea bass (would recommend the grilled preparation with drown butter... really allowed flavor of fish to be enjoyed), to the chocolate sea salt ganache with bread, the entire meal was thoroughly enjoyable. Can't wait for warmer weather to try different menu items in the ambiance of the rooftop patio."

  • "We tried the bar upstairs and loved it so we wanted to try the more intimate downstairs area. The atmosphere is good but the entrees were bad. We had the crabcake and thought it was tasty. We liked the kale salad but the dressing was a little heavy more from a jar than made in the kitchen. I'm sorry but the entrees were horrible. I ordered the tuna and the edges were so overcooked they were gray with no seasoning The fish and chips were cooked well but I think they ran out of basic seasoning because the the fish nor the batter was seasoned at all. I really wanted to like this place but with the slow service and bad food I can not recommend the restaurant at this time."

  • "Open Table site showed no opening for pre-theater seating, but restaurant actually had multiple openings. In the future, will call restaurant directly, and skip the Open Table system. Excellent seafood, stellar service. Big ticket, but worth it."

  • "This review is for the Main Level dinning room called the Union Fish Market (not for the Rooftop). While admirable that the UFM is trying to be sustainable, the menu and preparation leave a lot to be desired. I had the Skate and found this to be a very mediocre fish. I would not order it anywhere again. Two of my companions had the Dungeness Crab and it was overcooked and tough. Overall this place is simply unimpressive. Will not be going back."

  • "Went there with my adult son as a treat for the both of us. The waiter was excellent, we asked lots of questions about menu choices, he had a lot of knowledge. I would definitely go back for a dinner with my girlfriends. Food was great from the appetizer to the salad to our entree's and of course the dessert. We will both going back again!"

  • "Arrogant waiter. Actually rolled his eyes when we asked him for a suggestion. My cocktail tasted like cleaning fluid and the food was disappointing all around. There were two dishes we had where I thought "My Mom's is better" and my mom isn't that much of a cook. I really wanted to like this place but unfortunately I wouldn't go back or recommend it to anyone."

  • "I had a great time at the Union Fish Market. Our waiter was top notch. He recommended an appetizer that I would never have considered, the broiled octopus, and it was exquisite. My swordfish was tasty, but the thing I remember most was the service. The waiter had an excellent table persona. Friendly and engaging, but not imposing. A perfect balance. When we realized that the curtain was soon to rise at the Orpheum, our check was presented in less than a minute. Bravo!"

  • "Top notch service, top shelf drinks, and a wonderful selection of food have my wife and I already planning our next visit. The chef's here cook everything perfectly, I cannot even think of one thing I could have complained about. Great job Union Fish Market on creating a wonderful first impression! Definitely a place I will be coming back to."

  • "We were excited to try Union Fish Market but We're disappointed by the average food. The Servers were very attentive, almost too Attentive. We felt ours hovered by our table Ready to spring whenever we needed him. The food was disappointing. I was so shocked When there was no fresh fish special-even Red Lobster had a fresh fish "flown" in. We Not need to go back to Union Fish Market."

  • "The bar tender got us off on a start to a great evening. He made several recommendations on local beers and let us do a taste test. By the time we made our decision, we were being seated. Our server Todd explained the menu and asked if we were going to a play to make sure that we had plenty of time to eat and enjoy. We started off with Clam Chowder and Lobster Bisque. For the main course we tried the Salmon that was out standing, and the Judith Fin; we tried each other’s meals and enjoyed both. We will definitely will recommend the UNION FISH MARKET… already planning our next visit! I just want to say he and the rest of the wait staff did and outstanding job. They gave us just the right amount of attention."

  • "Took advantage of an Local Amazon promotion to try out this place. Nice interior and prompt reception. Pleasant server, but limited options for the coupon we were using. Crab cake, salads, Scallops, Sea Bass were good, but much smaller portions that pictured in online menu. Dessert options were dreadful. We tried the Bread and Chocolate - two small pieces of baguette with a dollop of oily choc pudding. Very sad end to a moderately good meal. We were not offered desserts appearing on the online menu. When enticing new customers into your establishment, probably best not to reduce portions or withhold menu items. With so many competitors willing to please their customers, it is unlikely that we would ever return."

  • "The shrimp and biscuits appetizer was very good. The kale Caesar salad and my wife's Skuna Bay salmon was excellent. My Lobster was chewy - not very good. The dessert with coconut ice cream, olive oil cake, and grapefruit was a good finish. Overall a good dinner - one that would have been excellent had the lobster been better."

  • "My skate wing filet was stringy, undercooked, and a texture I've never experienced before. I've also never seen an entree serving with only a filet on a large plate, no garnish, no side dishes. The waitress failed to inform us that there was no other food served with the entree. Poor value, not a good experience."

  • "We went on a Tuesday evening for dinner and arrived early for a drink. Service started well--as we entered, the manager greeted us and led us to the elevators for the Rooftop. The rooftop is great--sun-filled and warm. After our drink, we went to the Fish Market and things went downhill. We checked in and the hostess didn't speak to us. We ordered two appetizers, a sashimi and a pate. The sashimi was inedible--dried out and not fresh. Sat there for several minutes before the waitress checked in. Told her the app was not good, and she took it away. Then several minutes passed before she returned to ask if we wanted something else. During the lag, we decided to pay for the one edible appetizer and have dinner elsewhere."
