I reserved a spot at Tresca but the others were skeptical because it didn't seem to have the "name" that many other Boston restaurants had. By the end of the evening, I was declared brilliant for picking a restaurant with superb food and equally great service. Our waiter Theo was personable, helpful and instantly attentive without hovering. The meals were beyond compare...a very robust red wine, Ribeye steaks from milk fed Italian beef, marvelously prepared vegetables, fresh delicious salmon...all made for a great experience. I wasn't very hungry so didn't order an entree or pasta, & this is why I plan to return. Had some broccoli rabe & the applewood bacon Brussels sprouts, which were well prepared, but the most delicious thing I had was the Tonno Siciliano appetizer - fresh tuna tartar on crostini wedges with the yummiest basil olive oil drizzled over the top. Our party of three shared mussels marinara as an appetizer, and we each enjoyed separate pasta dinners - everything was cooked to perfection. We dined upstairs which, at first, was lovely. Then two large parties arrived, and we suddenly found ourselves unable to speak with one another. The hardwood floors, while pretty, provide no sound dampening. Also, we suspected that the restaurant may have been surprised by the sudden influx of people, as only two hard-working and very professional wait-staff (actually, a waiter and a server), struggled to keep patrons fed, watered, and paid. The food was delicious, although it was a somewhat limited menu(which we did know ahead of time). There were two specials - Salmon and a beef dish I believe, and both were tasty. Our group had a mix of orders - two specials, a pasta dish and a grilled chicken entree, and everyone said they would order their item again, which was a good sign. However., anyone looking for traditional north end red -sauce meals should probably go elsewhere. While this was a very trying week for all of Boston the other venues were bustling that night. The food was spectacular and the service as good as I have ever seen in the North end. The ambiance on the second floor was spectacular. I have yet to come across a menu item that I or anyone at my table didn't like. This restaurant SHOULD have gotten 5 stars, however the night we went the restaurant was over booked for a function and we were stuck at a little side table behind the stairs on the noisy main level - even though I made reservations weeks in advance as we were celebrating my and my mothers birthdays! Our reservation was for 6:00 PM. They didn't skimp on anything. We sat at a table directly in front of a window that overlooked the sidewalk. As there were only two other people in the dining area it was very quiet and romantic. The service was attentive without being intrusive. The three courses were outstanding. It was a last minute decision to have dinner in the North End and having recently moved to Boston we didn't know what a good selection would be. The management team greeted us upon arrival and directed us to their cozy bar for a drink because we were a little too early for our reservation. The drinks were delicious and the pours were generous.
Our table in the Dining room upstairs was dimly lit and had a very warm feeling about it. We were seated right next to the fire which only added more charm. The ambiance was fantastic. Our meals were incredible .the short ribs were fall off the bone incredible and a huge portion. Everyone at our table was impressed with the food.

We live right on Hanover St. so it was just a quick walk in freezing air last night.
