A word from Tre Soldi
From the owners of Coco Pazzo and Coco Pazzo Cafe, Tre Soldi invites you to delight in the flavors of Rome. Tre Soldi is a Roman-style trattoria located on bustling Ohio Street, just off the Magnificent Mile and walking distance to Lurie Children's, Northwestern Hospital and the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

Tre Soldi (meaning three coins in Italian) garners inspiration from the Trevi Fountain in Rome, made famous in the 1954 movie Three Coins in the Fountain. Murals of the iconic fountain and the rooftops of Rome bring a warm ambiance to the casual, contemporary atmosphere. The menu features classic house-made pastas, pizza as well as daily fish and meat specials. An emphasis is given to local farmers' offerings. The full bar features several Italian craft beers, more that 20 wines by the glass or quartino, and a 100 bottle wine list. Outdoor seating opens in late July.

It is a great place in the neighborhood. I specially recommend the meatballs, the Calamari Fritti and the Rissoto. Pizza is also very good, italian style - one per person! The relation between price and quality is excellent!

Tre Soldi is located half a block from me, and I have been there for lunch and dinner on many occasions. I've never been disappointed and, at times, have been pleasantly surprised. Tre Soldi is the sister restaurant to the beloved Coco Pazzo and Coco Pazzo Cafe, and offers the same quality of food as these restaurants within a more relaxed, neighborhood dining room. The service is friendly, attentive and informed. Menu highlights include the Grilled Octopus, any of the fresh pastas (I am a big fan of the Carbonara and the Rotini; all pastas are available in half orders too, which is great if you're looking for an appetizer or smaller entree portion), and the chicken. Pizzas are fired in a wood-burning oven and are great (go for the Funghi...finished with a hint of truffle, it's a winner!) Fish is well prepared, but (in my experience at least) lacks some of the flavor and creativity found in other menu items. Bottom-line: If you enjoy great food with a casual, yet quality, atmosphere and friendly, attentive service...give Tre Soldi a try.

Tre Soldi is a wonderful addition to the neighborhood. It is great, casual Italian food in a fun atmosphere. There is no pretention. I had a linguini with clams that was as good as anything I've had in Italy. Deffinetly try the artichoke appetizer. This addition to the Coco Pazzo group rounds out their offerings in excellent style.

Artichoke appetizer was like eating dust. Grilled octopus was too tough to chew. Calamari just OK. Grilled trout main dish was an embarrassment. Two very thin pieces of trout that I had to scrape off the skin with a fork and knife. No taste and ridiculous for $22! Husband's carbonara noodles were barely cooked. $10.50 glass of pinot grigio was barely filled half way. Very loud. Will NEVER go back!!

On a recent trip to Chicago, a group of friends and I had dinner at Tre Soldi. It is a cool restaurant with modern décor, attentive servers and excellent food - eggplant appetizer, caprese salad, beet salad, risotto, squid ink pasta were all fabulous. Will definitely come back on my next trip to Chicago.

We had a wonderful waiter, Luis, who took great care of us without hovering. He gave us excellent recommendations...Had lamb meatballs....Only complaint is that there were only three...delicious. Kale and Caesar salads were fresh and exceptional. Ordered Monkfish special and squash ravioli....fabulous and we ate every bite. Food arrived hot and beautifully plated. Great drink selection.....the limoncello granita was fantastic. And we had a magnificent dessert that was devoured....a chocolate semifreddo. We will return again for the pizza and the remainder of the menu as it all appealed to us. Big thanks to Luis and the manager who took great care of us.

We really enjoyed the overall experience. The ambience was solid and comforting. The server (Manuel) was friendly, knowledgeable, professional. The appetizers were a bit plain, but the entrees and dessert were great. I had the squid ink pasta. My wife had homemade gnocchi. Her daughter had the pizza. The desserts were memorable--we had three. The price was reasonable. I would go there again in a heartbeat.

butternut squash ravi's were good but very different than expected . description should be better in the menu - very little sage, butternut taste covered up by brown sugar in the sauce . Definately should be in the menu description since it changes the whole emphasis of the dish. But, if you like that - it was good. Waiter was awesome and knew his wine well.

Its a shame this review is not just based on the food. The food was great. Presentation was very nice. Unfortunately, the service was horrible. From the time we sat down we were disappointed. I think if it weren't a busy Saturday night we probably would have left before we even ordered. Drinks were hard to find. Water could not even be refilled. The waiter was extremely condescending when we tried to ask about the menu. Fortunately, we did stay because the food was great. Unfortunately, I probably will not give it another chance. There is too much competition in Chicago with restaurants that have great food AND service. Such a shame. I wish the owners put as much training into the wait staff as they did the kitchen.

Based on their website, I thought the restaurant was much larger and more stylish than in reality. No biggie. We sat outside anyway enjoying the last days of summer weather. The service was OK... the hostess was shy or socially awkward. We had a couple of waiters stop by but overall they were brief with us but not rude. The bread arrived but with no olive oil so I had to grab it from their stand. Food was excellent though. You MUST get the polpa (octopus) which was some of the best I've had - perfectly cooked and came with a delicious salad. My date really enjoyed her gnocchi. I enjoyed the spaghetti amatriciana but it was very salty and not spicy enough. I've not dessert expert but our panna cotta was light and lovely.

Tres Soldi offers Roman style Italian food which is a bit different (in a good way) than most of Chicago's Italian restaurants. We live nearby and took a birthday group of six people with a variety of backgrounds (1 German, 1 Romanian, 1 Argentine and 3 Americans). We had a pizza as an appetizer and everyone was impressed with the quality of the toppings and the texture of the crust. We all ordered different meals from the menu and everyone raved about the quality and taste of their own selection. We were too full to try dessert but the options looked pretty good. For a place that is 1 1/2 blocks off of Michigan Ave the prices are very reasonable.

This space used to be a very casual restaurant with no wait staff. The entrance still retains some of the that character but the interior is fine. A college friend was in for a conference and four of us met for drinks and dinner. We shared a margarita pizza that was good not great. We had a reasonably priced bottle of wine, the list is short and Italian. We all had past dishes, pasta cooked correctly and all agreed the sauces were tasty. Good value for Italian food in Streeterville near Michigan Ave.

We are big fans of the pizza at La Madia, but not their prices. Tre Soldi definitely holds its own (and at better prices) than their more popular competitor. Furthermore, Tre Soldi has a good selection of Italian standards such as gnocchi, lasagna, and caprese salad. I love their Terra Cotta dessert and have enjoyed it twice. I've also gotten two of their Italian Manhattans which is their own secret recipe but absolutely delicious. It's very easy to watch the bill sky rocket if you're not careful. If you're on a budget then stick to the Italian dishes and limit your drinks. Once I spent $90 by myself (appetizer, special entree, dessert, and cocktail) and we've also spent $85 for two people.

Have never been disappointed by the friendly service and excellent food. This is the type of place that's great to have in the neighborhood. Best bets are often the daily specials -- especially the salmon or other fish dishes which are creative and perfectly prepared. The salads are another high point (sounds boring, but they are really inventive and more sophisticated than you'd except for a moderately priced place.) The fava bean salad is our current favorite. Nice selection of Italian and other beers and good choice of moderately priced wines -- a full bar also. Calamari is a step above the norm -- crispy light breading kicked up with fried parsley and lemon slices. The daily frittata at lunch is a good choice. I'd highly recommend!

Tre Soldi was a fabulous find while I was visiting someone at Northwestern Hospital. It was within easy walking distance and (what's better) on Open Table and Airline Rewards! It was easy to make the decision to go to Tre Soldi after that. I was delighted to find that the ambiance at Tre Soldi was modern, comfortable, and very friendly. It seemed as if the owner, servers, and bar tender all took turns chatting with me. They made solid recommendations for food (I got the kale salad, salmon special and the panna cotta). I loved the panna cotta and will definitely get it again. I also really enjoyed my Italian Manhattan. I got spaghetti for my hospital friend and she said that it was the best and that we MUST return to this little gem.

Pastas and pizzas are remarkably good. The Romano pizza had a crisp crust and a pleasantly chewy texture, with just the right balance of cheese, a fresh-tasting tomato sauce, and anchovies. The cacio e pepe pasta was served perfectly al dente, with a well-prepared light sauce. We loved the bucatini with mussels and marinara sauce. Exceedingly friendly, prompt, helpful and attentive service. The all-Italian wine list has a few decent choices at reasonable prices; better to bring your own bottle and pay the $25 corkage fee.
