Diner Reviews
  • "The food was amazing (try the baked, stuffed dates, if they're available), and the wine was great. The place is incredibly small, so be ready for bumped chairs and making friends with the table next to you. The only real problem was the fact that our reservations were for 8, and we weren't seated until nearly 845, while others (with later reservations) were seated earlier. The food was worth it, and the night was nice enough (the only place to wait is outside). If it had been raining or even a little chillier, they would have lost our business entirely."

  • "We took our daughter there for her birthday . The food and service was fantastic and a nice little spot with only several tables which was perfect. We'd definitely go back and highly recommend. Reservations should be considered to get a spot before 7."

  • "We had never been here before. Decided to try a new place in the North End. It is a quaint place about 2 blocks from Hanover. Food is good. Pomodoro was a little under seasoned and the cheese ravioli were bland but the ragout was good. Nice neighborhood place."

  • "The restaurant was quite small and congested, but the service was great. The girls there work extremely hard and are on top of it. The food was great as I had the chicken parm and my wife had the spinach gnocchi and pork ragout. The fried calamari to start hit the spot and the table beside us had a fantastic antipasti plate. Since everyone was packed in as tight as possible, the noise was quite loud so this is not a "go and have a great conversation" kind of place. Overall the food was good and the service was great."

  • "Small dinning room with rustic Italian food. Reminded me of my dinning adventures in the villages of Tuscany. Food was prepared to perfection. I had fried zucchini blossoms stuffed with goat cheese and braised scallops with ribbon pasta in a pesto sauce, a very memorable meal."

  • "Monica's is a great place to go when you're looking for a true North End dining experience. The menu is well done and the food is delicious. Its small size feels intimate without being stifling. Plus, the staff is friendly and efficient. Would definitely recommend!"

  • "This place has a cool brick interior in a cozy little space. Entrees are good but sharing a bunch of antipasti is also an awesome way to go. Great for a date."

  • "This place came recommended from a friend and ended up being the perfect spot to meet up with a friend in town for a few nights. Small and a bit tight on space but the food was really good and fairly priced."

  • "Trattoria di Monica is not on the main path in the North End, but that is probably a good thing. You will need a reservation, but it is worth it. Great wait staff and amazing food. Very reliable. You feel like you are in Italy. It is small and if you do not like intimate (sitting close to others) it may not be to your liking. Every time we go we make new friends. Great spot, will go again and again"

  • "We had an outstanding meal with great table service. Unfortunately it got off to a tough start. We had reservations at 8 pm and arrived 10 minutes early. We were asked to wait, as were several other guests, outside or across the street at their shop/deli. As it was a busy Saturday night I was not entirely surprised. Well 75 minutes later one of the shop employees called over to see if they forgot us or not and they said to send us over. Perhaps forgotten or perhaps they take too many reservations for such a small restaurant. All said and done would definitely return but plan to wait on a weekend night."

  • "Small but warm and cozy. Great setting actually with the exposed brick. The food was absolutely outstanding. Everything was delicious including the salad and bread. I had linguine vongole and my husband had a black pasta with seafood (? scallops). Awesome!!"

  • "See all their reviews. Very Small. But it is very good. We we're there on a rain swept Sunday and had reservations and we're seated ten minutes early. Their homemade pastas are the best. Very long list of appe specials that night, and a few more for dinner. Our waitress was the greatest. Here you can't be ignored and she doesn't. I saw immediately what some people have said about diners staying long over wine, coffee, and conversation. We will be back. Works really well off the beaten track on Hanover street, but would expect long lines over summer nights, weekends. Do the bruschetta with asparagus, cheese, and a fried egg!"

  • "I LOVED this restaurant. Our waitress was wonderful and very acommodating. I brought my granddaughter with me (who is only 15 months old) and they had a highchair all ready for her. We got an appitizer of dates with stuffed goat cheese and it was great. The bread....the bread was delicioius. I got the pasta primavera and my friends got their scallop special. I am planning on going back very soon and highly recommend this place. To anyone questioning whether to go there or not....GO. We went for lunch but I'm sure dinner is equally as good."

  • "I have been at Trattoria di Monica before, but this visit was fantastic! I brought two out of town guests with me, and they both loved it! After waiting 15 minutes for our 7PM reservation, we were seated next to the wall. My friend could barely fit at the table, but he was comffortable. The waitress spouted off the specials quickly, and we were impressed by her memory. We ordered grilled calamari for an appetizer, and it was like nothing I have ever tasted!! My friend and I shared the seafood with squid ink pasta and the seafood risotto (a special), and her husband had seafood ravioli. Everything was absolutely delicious! The experience was one of the best I have had in a long time! Highly recommended!"

  • "We heard this was THE restaurant to go to in the North End so had to try it. We were seated promptly and the waitstaff was very attentive. The restaurant is extremely small and cramped and the noise level was high but we expected that. The food was disappointing. While the bread and salad was good the pasta dishes we ordered were not. My husband had the sweet potato gnocchi special which he was told was the most popular dish. His gnocchi was undercooked and the sauce was just average. I ordered the shrimp and asparagus with goat cheese over red fettuccine special which was dry and gummy. The fettuccine was clumped together in the middle of my plate and there was barely any sauce. The tiramisu dessert was good."

  • "for 40 minutes after your reservation was scheduled, Monica's is for you! The saving grace of this experience was the Chicken Soup, which was certainly appreciated after standing in the rain. Monica's is tiny, and there is no waiting area; however, it's very popular. Food is good, but really, I've had better Italian food, so I wouldn't rush back."

  • "The high Zagat rating and the fantastic space created expectations that unfortunately were not met. We may have ordered the wrong dishes. My girlfriend got the saffron risotto with seafood. We couldn't taste the saffron, and having risotto kind of sprinkled among the clams and mussels didn't work; didn't like trying to scrape the risotto off the shells, etc., and it retained too much of a fishy taste. Would have worked better as a separate dish. I had the tagliatelle with pesto and mushrooms. Live pesto, but this one was bland. Love mushrooms, but these didn't have a lot of taste. The salads were very good. Overall, we thought the food was decent but not memorable."

  • "Set in a rather small hole in the wall.. Trattoria di Monica was a nice treat and a great break from more conventional dining experiences. The place was very narrow and the brick walls were a great touch, it made the restaurant feel intensely personal, which was great! I came here with a date and it was a great time.. I had the chicken parm and it was delicious.. The pasta played a minor role of the dish but tasted fantastic. Great experience will definitely return!"

  • "Small, crowded, noisy, with excellent, friendly and helpful service. Not chi-chi, but over the top great food. We had squash blossoms, sweet potato gnocchi with broccoli rabe and sweet sausage, shrimp on tomato pasta with asparagus, goat cheese and a hint of lemon zest. Each was an outstanding and beautifully balanced flavor combination. You will meet those around you and likely compare notes on what each of you has ordered."

  • "Despite reviews to the contrary, I found *no* problem getting my reserved table on-time (on a bustling Saturday evening). The staff was very pleasant and attentive. The restaurant was small, lively and comfortable. The food was good... not great... but good. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here... but it was decent. Bread was cold and seemed like typical supermarket "Italian bread" (which is too bad given the awesome bread available in the neighborhood). Of the places I've visited in the North End, this was at the bottom of the list - food-wise - but mostly because I think the food in the North End is above average. This was pretty average."

  • "Great ambiance, excellent food, top notch service. I knew we would be in for a great evening right when we walked into this quaint restaurant in the North End. It is small - probably 8 or so tables, so be sure to make a reservation - but the size was perfect and made it feel a little more exclusive. The pasta is all made to order and the number of daily specials they had seemed endless. Our waitress was wonderful. She provided very good recommendations on wine as well as on what we should get for dinner. Our pasta was cooked perfectly and had a very authentic feel to it (more so than other North End restaurants I have been to). Finally, prices seemed very reasonable for the quality of food and service. I would highly recommend."

  • "We are from central New York and this was a Father-Son get away trip to Boston for the weekend before he graduates and heads to college. He loves italian and seafood so the dish fit the bill perfectly. We both chose the same special, which was seafood ravioli. According to the waitress, this was the first time the chef had made the dish. It was fantastic! Would definitely recommend he continue to make this one of his "special" dishes. The service was wonderful and all done with a nice smile. Just an overall great experience. Would definitely come back next time we return to Boston."

  • "Excellent Italian fare in a unpretentious setting coupled w attentive service in Boston's North End....can't wait to go back..only negative is lack of a bar or an area to wait while you are airing to be seated..."

  • "ITrattoria di Monica has the most delicious pasta, which you would struggle to recreate at home. The pasta is fresh, al dente (wonderfully chewy) and holds up to whatever sauce you order. The service was attentive and accomodating."

  • "This is the perfect foodie spot. This restaurant is TINY so it's best to make a reservation because it's always busy, but the food and service are beyond. During my last visit with a few friends, I got the linguine pomodoro--thin pasta ribbons in housemade marinara. This is my go-to and while the dish is simple, it speaks volumes at how authentic this place is. Quite easily the best pasta I've ever eaten (sorry, Mom). My table also ordered the sweet potato gnocchi with sausage and butternut squash ravioli in a sage cream sauce. Both were absolutely divine. We all received clean plate awards. If you're looking for authentic Italian away from touristy Hanover St. this is definitely the place. Also, their artwork rocks."

  • "always a pleasure. Wait staff was very accommodating as our friends were late (difficulty parking with 2 event at nearby Garden). Food was perfect. don't usually go on a busy Saturday night so noise level and tight seating was a problem - but the food and staff more than made up for it."

  • "We arrived exactly on time a birthday celebration (3 people in our party) at this tiny restaurant. Stood waiting at the doorway for 45 minutes with several open tables of two and one large open table of 6. Two twenty something kids in trucker hats and chains were seated ahead of us at the 6 top, sat slouching and looking out into restaurant - didn't order. I politely asked if they could re-arrange at two top for three, and if the guys at the 6 top weren't going to order, could we be seated there. Waitress said "you have to talk to owner, those guys are his friends". I did. Owner blew top and told us to leave restaurant and threatened me physically. We found another nice restaurant who seated us in 5 minutes. I'm still shaking."

  • "Have dined here several times and it never disappoints. Prices are a bit higher than some other places, but if it is in your budget it is well worth it. They do offer prix fixe selections which are a great option (soup + salad + entree) which is reasonably priced and very satisfying. Servers are very accommodating to special requests (I like my pasta cooked softer than al dente; we asked for a pitcher of water on the table - both requests were taken care of cheerfully). I wish the appetizers were a little more generous for sharing, but they are always delicious. Homemade soups - terrific. Our daughter loved her Caesar salad with anchovies - they use the white anchovies, yummy."

  • "My girlfriend and I went here for a Valentine's day dinner. We arrived a few minutes before our reservation and were greeted by a very friendly member of the staff that was ready to check us in. After a short wait we were seated in the middle of the restaurant. The space is on the smaller side, even for the North End, and we were close to another couple. We felt a little crowded during dinner but that's the only complaint! The service and food were both excellent. The wine we ordered with dinner was perfect and the serving portions are also a little on the smaller side - don't expect any leftovers, but the food is some of the best we have tasted in the North End. Overall, a perfect experience and they handled the V-Day rush perfectly."
