Diner Reviews
  • "Went for my girlfriends birthday. We were excited to eat a tasty meal without concern of price. The waitress was nice and the setting intimate, but the food was a big disappointment. The bruschetta came out burnt. When we (very politely) asked about it, the answer was "we char our bruschetta here." Huh? I ordered the special sweet potato gnocchi and my girlfriend got the veal. My gnocchi was bland and tasteless. My girlfriend's veal was too, and the two small pieces were nested on top of green linguine with tomato sauce that looked like something I would make at home in 15 minutes. Again, the experience overall wasn't that bad, but when you're paying ~110 for two entrees and an app, you expect good quality food. At least the wine was good."

  • "On a busy busy Saturday we decided to try this restaurant for the first time. Not only was the food delicious but the waitstaff was a pleasure -- crazy busy but they were all in sync with each other especially given the extremely tight quarters. Always a smile on their face even when a party of 4 at the door was upset they had to wait a bit more for their table -- note that this restaurant has @10 tables - very hard to seat people exactly at the time of the reservation -- although we lucked out seeing as there was 2 of us. Pasta was all homemade and very tasty - not a drop left on either of our plates - my hubby had chicken piccata over angel hair & I had shrimp special over tomato fettucini with goat cheese, asparagus & cherry tomatoes."

  • "Rather disappointed in this place. The noise level was so loud that we couldn't have a conversation. Their caesar salad was excellent. Their spaghetti carbonara was excellent. Their mussels were not flavorful enough. Their nightly special (sweet-potatoe gnocchi) was not good. I've enjoyed their sister restaurant "Vinotecci di Monica" many times."

  • "We had a great time here. Fortunately we had made reservations - no chance of getting in without them. Excellent enthusiastic server with a sense of humor, al dente pasta made at the restaurant, very reasonable and diverse wine list. Its placement off of crowded Hanover Street also helped. We will return often."

  • "Went to Trattoria di Monica after searching for cozy, well-reviewed places in the North End. I took an out-of-town friend, aiming to introduce her to the neighborhood. We were seated not too long after our reservation time, and the food was great! The tables are all quite close together, so it feels a bit like you're dining with 20 or 30 friends. I loved that it was so small and intimate."

  • "My only real complaint is with how late we were seated after our reservation. We had an 8:45 time and didn't get seat until at least 9:20."

  • "Had an enjoyable meal here catching up with college roommates, the staff did not hurry us to order. We ordered 2 appetizer specials, a bruschetta with mozerrella, pesto and tomato and fried zucchini blossoms. Dinner I had a scallop and pasta dish which was also a special. Definitely would come back if in the area."

  • "This is definitely one of my favorite spots not only in the North End, but in Boston! Food is always amazing, and I love the cozy atmosphere. Be sure to make reservations, or you will be waiting a long time (but oh so worth the wait!!)!! Love it."

  • "Arrive early because it only has seats for 33. Iit was full by 5:15 pm. The Insalata Mista salad had a very flavorful dressing which I will try to replicate at home. Everything was excellent."

  • "This was our second visit to Monica's and we felt confident enough from our first visit to take a friend from out of town. Like the previous time, we left feeling "aren't we lucky to have finally found this restaurant!" Our two appetizers - artichoke and a bruschetta topped with fried egg - were wonderful to share, as were the entrees. Both times we've tried one of the intriguing daily specials (quite a few to choose from) and then something else from the main menu and have been delighted with both. We've gone during the mid-week both times and both times found the place hopping' and fun with nice folks giving very good service, only wish had a little more space between tables."

  • "We were greeted by friendly staff to start. Service was excellent. Food was delicious. Homemade pasta!!! Although there weren't many children present, ours were treated like stars!"

  • "The North End has a great number of Italian restaurants. Some are overrun with tourists. I get my hair cut in the North End, and barbers recommended Trattoria di Monica. The wait staff was excellent and the food delicious. Each member of our party ordered a different entree and all were exceptional. We look forward to "next time.""

  • "A North End favorite. Delicious food, nice ambiance and good list of relatively inexpensive wines. Space is a bit small, which makes for perhaps more intimacy with neighboring diners than you'd like and also less targeted service. Those inconveniences are more than made up for by the menu!"

  • "The reservations were overbooked and we waited with a hoard of other disappointed diners waiting to be seated for our reservation time...40 minutes after the reservation we were finally seated. I have never been in such a small and crowded restaurant. The service and crowded setting very much detracted from the dining experience. If I wanted this kind of experience I would have just gotten take-out somewhere and sat on the curb side to eat. This was a real let down for a special anniversary night dinner."

  • "Several friends who live in the North End all recommended Trattoria di Monica among their top choices in the neighborhood, and they were right. The food was excellent (lots of specials that were outstanding). Overall it was "original" Italian, meaning it didn't taste like every other Italian restaurant in the neighborhood, but had a distinct set of flavors and fresh ingredients. I particularly enjoyed the bruschetta with burrata as well as the homemade sweet potato pasta. Service was fun and energetic. The space is an intimate, casual setting with small tables and not that many of them. It is a particularly nice setting when the doors are open to the street."

  • "My goto for the North End. Food is always tasty with a great variety of specials. Service is pleasant and attentive. sometimes seating is tight, but part of the ambiance of the north end. Besides where else would you see a picture of Jim Morrison and Albert Einstein side by side....speaks volumes on attitude..... genius comes in many forms."

  • "I have dined at many North End restaurants and this may be the best meal I have ever had. I would highly recommend this restaurant and look forward to returning soon!"

  • "Reviews here and on Zagat had led me to believe this would be a great spot to experience the North End while on vacation. If that's so, the North End itself is over-rated, but I doubt that. This was gummy, barely edible pasta priced considerably over market - at least for what it was. Avoid."

  • "Great service. Just a little noisy...yummy though!"

  • "What a wonderful North End choice to celebrate our daughter's birthday! The service was charming and relaxed, the wine list was most reasonable and greatly enjoyed, and the food was just wonderful! Can't wait to go back!"

  • "If your looking for the best Italian food in the north end already known for it's great Italian cuisine, TRATTORIA is the place to go. Yes it's small but that's what makes the service so great and the portion per plate was perfect. I would highly recommend this great little restaurant to anyone, and my girlfriend and I will be back very soon !! "

  • "This is a small cozy spot for a great meal matched with a great wine. The menu and specials were carefully thought out and prepared to your taste by a perfectionist in food preparation. I was impressed by the willingness to make changes to the preparation of each meal to suite your taste; spicy or not so spicy, with or without walnuts. It all goes to reaching a feeling of having a home cooked meal, only better."

  • "Wine list was excellent. Our server was prompt and charming. Both dishes were excellent. I loved my appetizer. A great spot to have a catch up session with an old friend. It is intimate and the tables are close. The food was fresh and the portions were perfect. "

  • "Incredibly great food. Incredibly great!! It is very small and busy and narrow and a special treat. It reminds me of the old country. The servers were happy, helpful, and very nice. You should make a reservation. It is not overly expensive. The pasta -- made on the premises -- is wonderful. The veal bracciole melted in my mouth, a wonderful feeling. Grilled calamari!! Caprese!!"

  • "My only wish is a sound baffle in the ceiling to deaden some of the noise. Deservingly, the place is always mobbed but hard surfaces and brick walls only amplify the loud and full tiny room. Still, our favorite North End spot! "

  • "I've always loved the food here at Monica's. Their specials have always been something to commend. In fact, I've always gone with the specials to the point I will say that someday I will go with their regular menu. This time I had the dates stuffed with bleu cheese and for the main course, I had a risotto with cheese and clams and mussels. Both were very delicious. I only wish there were more than 3 of those dates. The risotto was creamy yet wasn't overcooked and the shellfish was fabulous. I had a really nice tiramisu to finish. The cabernet I heartily recommend."

  • "We went to this restaurant because a friend recommended it. I had the pumpkin ravioli (to die for) and hubby had the carbonara. We both had salads and our pasta dishes and would highly recommend this place! It's a tiny restaurant but BIG on flavor "
