A word from Townhouse Bar and Grill
From the Emeryville fireman's dream of a Speakeasy that he built in 1926, to Steve Vernetti, the original Townhouse Speakeasy bartender who along with his family ran it for 35 plus years after Prohibition ended, the TH has been and remains an East Bay institution. Next came the 70's and 80's when country and western bars, music and dancing were at their peak and the theme at the TH. This period is fondly remembered by Cal graduates who continue to visit the Townhouse and reminisce about their dancing days but do not miss the peanut shells and sawdust on the floor. 1990 was the year that Ellen Hope Rosenberg, the current executive chef and owner, took over an ailing TH and resurrected it from top to bottom. From her inspired American-California style menu to the maintenance of the original construction both in and out. This is a restaurant that has a unique story whose food and ambiance is as authentic as the staff are courteous and genuine.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Townhouse may look like a little bit of nothing from the street but this place is a true Gem. For me this is the best bar / restaurant in the area... The restaurant had a full bar...wide ranging wine list and white linen...yet the vibe is relaxed, the staff is attentive and if you want to be even more casual the outside dining is very accommodating. I have eaten here several times and the appetizers and the entrees have never disappointed. And if you happen to leave room for dessert...many wonderful selections are available."

  • "I am lucky enough to have this restaurant in my neighborhood and can walk a few blocks to get there. The food is consistently good as it the service, and it is lovely to sit outside in the warm weather. Inside has a great vibe, too."

  • "Everyone in our party thoroughly enjoyed their meals. Good location, good drinks, good food, good service. A little pricey but well worth it. What else is there to say?"

  • "It was our first time and we were excited to be there. The ambience was great and the mood was good. Our waiter was not as engaged as we would've liked. Also, we asked for a medium rare prime rib but it came out rare. I was hesitant to return it so we opted to just keep it. The caeser salad was great though. We had to ask for water and then we only got half a glass!? When we finally got our bill, our waiter didn't even thank us. He couldn't even make eye contact with us, he simply looked away when he placed the bill on our table. I'd like to think we'd return but it was on the pricey end so to have a waiter that made us feel somewhat insignificant makes it less likely."

  • "While the Townhouse is no longer the rough-edged after work beer hangout, its current classed-up dining is great! Still earthy and real inside, the nice tables and relaxed but superb service are a great support to its wonderful food. We ate mostly seafood, all of which was nicely cooked and beautifully sauced. The caesar salad was goregous, the calamari decent, and the cocktails perfect. Not too expensive for a nice meal, and served with good timing. I'm looking forward to going back!"

  • "delicious Caesar with chicken...large enough for a good lunch. Friendly staff, good vibes. Really a neighborhood gem. Companion had lams sald and she loved it. Gave me a taste of the lamb and I totally agree. Love htis place for dinner and now also love it for lunch. Bravo Townhouse!!!"

  • "This was our first time after hearing about it from many people. Boy! were we impressed. The food was awesome, service was great and loved the ambiance. Can't think of another place where I was so impressed at first visit. Got a table last minute on Friday for 6 people and couldn't believe it. Don't understand why except it's Emeryville so it might be location although it was a decent neighborhood. Felt perfectly comfortable walking and got good parking. It's a beautiful place and couldn't have had a better time. Able to pick a wine from the list without breaking the bank and it was Calif. which I prefer. So good we are going back tonight!! Dreaming about the ravioli I had last night!"

  • "The food and services are allays consistently excellent. The menu contains a large number of choices and everything is done well. Most restaurants cannot pull of this kind of excellence with so many dishes to choose from. And the service is always professional and accommodating. Plus the bar is one of true gems. Drink portions are generous and tasty."

  • "My reservation told the restaurant that it was a birthday celebration so we were seated in a nice corner at a charming little table. The staff was very attentive. We had a tasty dinner with wine, appetizers and dessert and the bill was very reasonable. If they would have comped one of the desserts or a glass of wine for the birthday girl, that would have been extra special. Otherwise this place is consistently worth visiting. Parking lot on site too, which is nice."

  • "I had been to the Townhouse once before but the service and food last Wednesday was so noticeably above average that I have to write this very positive review and encourage others to put this on their list of regular eateries. The food was excellent and the service was incredible. It was a very busy night but there was no delay in receiving anything and we had a lovely evening."

  • "If you like nice- sized portions of well made food in a homey atmosphere...check this out. Original iconic speakeasy is now a fine, but informal, restaurant managed so well by restaurant manager "Maz" . Full bar. Their new rendition of appetizer Pot-Stickers started things off with a BANG!! Creatively done salads as entrees very good and good old fashioned Prime Rib for the meat-lovers. They cover everything...including Malbec wine by the glass and warm baguette bread for the table. Friendly crowd and staff keep customers coming back."

  • "Ordered garlic fries app along with the artichoke dip. Waitress brings basic fries... as an appetizer? More importantly, it wasn't what we ordered. When told, the kitchen sent back the original cold fries tossed with garlic. Thanks! After the main course arrived, we waited forever to order 2 more glasses of wine. Finally asked the bus boy to tell our waitress we wanted another glass of wine (not enough time for two). After waiting 20 minutes (mentioned it when bill arrived), manager offered a non-apology and said the credit would appear in a week or so."

  • "I used to live in the Bay Area, and Townhouse was a local fave of mine -- a go-to place. Recently visited and went again, and was delighted to find it just as wonderful as I had remembered: food, service, ambiance. Great place."

  • "This is one of our favorite spots in the east bay. Love the ambiance. The food is always good and well priced. The barkeep makes a mean Cosmo.....which in itself should get one there. The staff is friendly and on the money. This is a hidden little gem, and i am almost loath to gush on about it for fear that once it's discovered I'll be forced to try and get into Denny's.....not that there's anything wrong with Denny's, it's just that they don't serve Cosmos."

  • "Just moved to Emeryville and had to try this place after seeing so many good reviews on Yelp. The worn exterior (which I now realize is intentional) gave us somewhat low expectations, so we were pleasantly surprised by the warmly lit interior, with exposed rafters and tie-bars under a high-peaked gable. We liked the wide-ranging menu and ordered potstickers and crab-stuffed mushroom caps as appetizers, both tasty and leaving us wanting more. My chicken piccata was deliciously rich (I never order chicken in restaurants) and the short ribs, risotto and penne my companions ordered were also reportedly delicious. The understated but attentive service, and lively but not-too-loud ambiance, sealed a great evening. Recommended!"

  • "The food was delicious and the service professional and generous. The restaurant was busy but the waiter made himself available and was present at all the right moments. The hostess went out of her way for us too. You can't help but admire that combination of attentive service."

  • "Unfortunately one of the lesser experiences, food was excelent. The bread came with the meal and only when asked (twice). Iced tea was not filled. The waiter did not check to see if everything was OK and the busser was the only contact from order to check."

  • "Townhouse was great. We (4) drove in for Valentines Day from Fairfield based on reviews. Had to get 5:30 reservations but we like a little less people in the restaurant. It certainly became louder as the night went on. Cool place. Small but great vibe. The crowd was considerably older than the Emeryville demographic. We liked that. The pricing was good. We spent more than we usually do because we just didn't want to leave. Dessert was ok. I would recommend trying some place else. We went and walked around the mall after dinner. Definitely a different crowd. The only down side of Townhouse is the lack of any type of view. So close to the City but so far from any view. Overall great experience and will return"

  • "I love eating here, this was my 2nd time and food was just as delicious as 1st time. Bartender's make great drinks also!! I ordered meatloaf with mashed potatoes and spivey Caramelized onions, I loved it and my boyfriend ordered the prime rib, he states it was delicious too!! We would definitely go back again. One other thing we were running late for our reservation by like 45 min cause of a movie & they still sat us promptly after we apologized for our tardiness. We were very impressed and enthused for being sat so quickly cause we were hungry and ready for a good meal which we definitely got."
