Diner Reviews
  • "The service was excellent and the ambience was nice. The location on the GW campus was convenient. But I did not find the food very appetizing. I ordered a veggie burger and I realize that veggie burgers are not always tasty. This one was definitely not. I will probably go back, however, and try something else on the menu. I'll give it another chance!"

  • "We enjoyed a great brunch outdoors on a beautiful spring day! Our entrees included the Hippo, blueberry pancakes, yougart parfait & granola, pulled pork sandwich and the breakfast burrito. Portions were a good size without being too much (although we still had a few leftovers). Prices were reasonable and service was good. We also enjoyed the bacon blood mary and we're already planning a return visit for the bottomless mimosas! Overall, a good choice for a casual, laid back Sunday brunch."

  • "I've had a decent/average experience at Tonic in the past but this experience has me never want to go back. Highlights: - Being told I cand't add spinach to my eggs since "all the food is pre-made". The waitperson went to the back and apparently "fought" for me to add spinach to my eggs at a cost of two dollars (for a few measly leaves)...no thanks - It took us 45 mins for 2 brunch plates which were apparently "pre-made". When our food came out, it was lukewarm and the cheese on top of my eggs had already reached that nasty half-melted state where it looks plasticy - After 45 mins, my friend's order was COMPLETELY wrong. It took another 20 to get her food and mine became freezing. No offers to reheat and we couldn't find our wait staff."

  • "We went for lunch and was impressed by the quality and taste of the food. I'm sure we'll venture there again due to it's proximity to the office. However, I would like to see more vegetarian/vegan options."

  • "I fin d tonic to be a reliable luncheon spot and they feature Tater Tots! What's not to like?"

  • "Food was fine, not distinguished. Where we were sitting was very loud. Nice vibe for a quick and easy brunch."

  • "We found Tonic@Quigleys Pharmacy on OpenTable while standing in a 2 hour wait line for brunch at another establishment. What a great find! Some of the friendliest wait staff i've encountered since moving to DC. The neighborhood feel and the unique building were a complete delight. We look forward to many more visits!"

  • "Great place to grab lunch or dinner after work. Food is always good - lots of options for vegetarians. Service is always good - attentive and friendly. I always have a good meal there. Looking forward to spending more time on the patio this spring and summer!"

  • "Visited Tonic for a work-lunch date where we could talk and enjoy a good meal. Would totally recommend it for people new to DC or visiting family at GW."

  • "The service is fast and my guest and I enjoyed the food. Great place to run out for a nice, relaxing lunch."

  • "Had great service. I ordered the Steak & Smash and it was absolutely delicious."

  • "We had to request cutlery, water, and our food took a long time to come out. The table of eight+ seated after us received their order before ours - we had no special orders - just a burger, Mac and Cheese, tofu, fish tacos, and pulled pork. Our order was stone cold and had obviously been sitting for a while. We sent several items back and received hot new orders in return. The server apologized but then disappeared for a long period leaving dirty dishes which we set aside. At dessert, the ice cream tasted like a grocery store brand but the apple crisp was good. The coffee was lukewarm. The best item on the menu was the macaroni and cheese chicken pot pie, which our 17 year-old visitor loved but the adults thought a bit bland."

  • "The food is always great, and I love the decor of the place, my only negative is the service. It always takes forever for the food and waitresses."

  • "While our dinner was delicious, service was extremely slow and it seemed as though the waitress forgot about our table several times over the night. An average dinner took nearly two hours, and we ended up taking our bill to another server to get the credit card processed."

  • "I work near tonic and when I have to invite some one for lunch this is my first option. Also when we have to celebrate something with my co-workers we choose Tonic."

  • "Made a reservation several days in advance, requesting a booth. I'm a regular customer and have been here many times. Arrived a few minutes early and was informed that there were no tables available. We ended up eating at the bar and we had to wait at least 10 minutes for that!"

  • "I want to like this restaurant. I ordered the ultimate nachos without guac and beans - needless to say they came out with them. I sent them back. Unfortunately my husband finished his meal before the nachos returned. When I did get them they were cold. I just don't understand how hard it is to get stuff right. When I asked if that was normal the waitress said the kitchen was pushing out a lot of nachos at that time. So what! Shouldn't they be hot. Don't make excuses - fix the issue."

  • "Pulled pork was outstanding; Totchos are a must (tater tots subbed for tortilla chips on nachos platter)! Just a few blocks from Foggy Bottom Metro, and 1 block from Lisner Auditorium. Good down home cooking, pretty reasonably priced. They have a Gluten-Free menu too."

  • "Patio can't be beat when the weather is good; tables stacked together closely makes for some slipping & sliding with neighbors... But otherwise exceptional"

  • "Great for Sunday breakfast. Very quiet and relaxing. Nice campus view from second floor table. Corned beef hash was excellent! Love them Tots!"

  • "We enjoyed a romantic dinner for two on Valentine's Day at Tonic. We were greeted by a friendly hostess and were glad we made a reservation early as the restaurant was busy. Given a choice of heated outdoor patio or inside dining room we chose indoors and were whisked upstairs to our table by a window. Having looked online previously at the menu we had a good idea what we wanted to order. There were a few differences between the menus but that wasn't a problem. We were served very quickly after placing our order and enjoyed our appetizers, entrees, and drinks while observing the busy restaurant atmosphere. We were never rushed and enjoyed our experience at Tonic and plan to come back for a return engagement."

  • "Tonic @ Quigley's is a great place for a pre-concert meal near Lisner Auditorium and not far from the shuttle to the Kennedy Center. I had a very tasty salmon and corn chowder and a burger. The server was friendly and helpful. My friend had a very good salmon entree. The building has a lot of character and the tables are well-spaced."

  • "Tonic is down the street from my office so I go there on occasion. The food was very mediocre this visit."

  • "Comfort food transformed. The house specialties seem to be mac and cheese and tater tots. They come in a variety of preparations. The mac of the week (jerk fhicken) was incrediy well done. Portion size is HUGE. You will take home half your plate. But that's OK. This is good stuff. Tonic is a fun place to take families. The kids will love it, and the dishes will please those with more adventurous palates, too. Looking forward to going back."

  • "I have only ever had lunch at Tonic, because it is in close proximity to my office. That said, it is quite a gem in the sea of salad bar/hot food buffets in Foggy Bottom. The food is always good - being a vegetarian, I never have a problem finding something delicious to eat. And the service is wonderful - prompt, courteous, always anticipating the needs of the customer. A definite yes for lunch!"

  • "Not too busy, not too loud, but food kind of bland and soup came out warm. It was fine, but not remarkable - even for lunch."

  • "I was excited about dining at tonic when I looked at the menu. We ordered the Coney Island tots for an appetizer and it was good. But nothing special. By the time our food came I was not as hungry. My salad was on a bed of arugula and there was way too much dressing and it was all very salty. The other item we ordered included the Mac and cheese which was good but everything else seemed to be very salty as well. I'd be willing to go back and give it a second try. Many items on the menu looked enticing"

  • "I have been pleasantly surprised at the quality and atmosphere at Tonic. Located in the heart of the George Washington University campus, Tonic is an excellent venue for all kinds of fun activities, including hanging out with friends, enjoying an excellent meal, choosing from a diverse selection of quality beers. I would take to Tonic anyone I want to impress with my knowledge of great places to go in DC. Keep up the great work, Tonic!"

  • "Good selection of food and a REALLY good selection of wines by the glass. It's a reliable destination if you want a business or social lunch."

  • "Had a fine lunch but the menu has few healthy and vegetarian options. Even the brussel sprouts are made with bacon......great choice if you like burgers, cheese and don't care about calories."

  • "Tonic was great as usual -- this was probably my 25h or 30th meal there -- but I have noticed that the service is slower each time I go. It can take 10 minutes to have someone take a lunch order. My sense is they are understaffed at lunchtime. The servers clearly are working hard. Otherwise no complaints, the food is great and the location can't be beat."

  • "We enjoyed an early dinner while visiting DC for the weekend. We try to always have one meal at Tonic each time we're in DC and the on-line reservations are great! Food was very good, server seemed to either forget about us as peak dinner hour came or became considerably busier but otherwise a great place!"

  • "Excellent service - highly recommend you make a reservation, though- -otherwise, the waits can be quite long. I used open table for the reservation, was quickly seated in a great spot with bookshelves and misc. take one / leave one books. It was amusing to browse a bit during dinner. The food was excellent as usual (I have been here multiple times for lunch; however, this was my first for diner). Started with house cocktails -- both hit the spot and were well made and quickly to our table. The pizza is fun and unique (arugula pesto with veggie toppings) and we also enjoyed their tots. Prompt, friendly service, highly recommend."

  • "This was a last minute choice for the night before New Year's Eve dinner. Indeed a "gem" in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood. We were seated on the top floor immediately. Our server, Elena, was very attentive and most pleasant. My guest had fish tacos and I chose the "Tonic Burger", opting to replace the french fries with a Caesar Salad. Both dishes delicious. Need to return soon!"

  • "Great place to get a good burger or comfort food from your childhood. Got tator tots as an app. They came with a few different dipping sauces that were a pleasant surprise. I got a taco salad that wasn't filling enough unless your idea of filling up on just lettuce. My fiance got a burger which he enjoyed. Wouldn't mind coming again."

  • "The last time we came here we had an outstanding time This visit was very different. We arrived at an off hour, 4:45, and the host seemed surprised to see us. It took him a few minutes to get our table ready, which turned out to be strange because we were the ONLY people in the upstairs dining area. My menu was missing a whole page, and my wife's was missing the specials insert I think our server was on a break, or at least wanted to be, because he seemed sleepy and disinterested. He was not very attentive (again, we were the only people in the room until just before we left.) The food was still good. We know this place is popular and that it can do much better. They need to learn to pay attention to off times as well as busy ones."

  • "Make a reservation! It was packed when we went. Overall it was ok, but our order was messed up and we didn't have time to send it back. THat was a little disappointing. But the food was ok, I'll probably eat there again."

  • "A fun spot with good, not great, food. A nice option from the Washington Circle scene, especially for events at the Marvin Center or Lisner. Bring a book to leave on their shelves for others to take!"
