Please keep in mind that once the band starts the cover charge applies to all guests in the restaurant and the bar regardless of the time they arrive.

  • "First let me say that before this last visit, I was at the Tonga Room in Sept 2012. Since that visit I was very surprised to find out that the overall quality of the restaurant has diminished greatly. Before the "Pineapple Royale" was served in an actual pineapple, now you are served your drink in a porcelain pineapple, no more real coconuts either, just porcelain ones. Granted the price of the drink has gone down, but I came here for the great atmosphere of two years ago, real pineapples and coconuts included! The menu has been cut down to basically one fish dish, one chicken dish, etc. Not to mention that there was one waiter for about 20 tables. This restaurant used to be worth the price, sadly not anymore."

  • "We went to the Tonga Room because it looked unique and fun. Surprisingly, the food was the best part. It was delicious! Try the tri-tip with greens in a cilantro sauce over mashed potatoes with a hint of coconut. Get a side of their grilled asparagus. The after dinner coffee with chocolate and coconut milk was also good. If I go back it will be for the terrific food. The service was excellent also."

  • "It was a good experience. The surroundings were great. Service was great. The food was fair. I had the Tonga hot pot. It was bland. It was not spicy as describe on the menu. The muhe e was okay. The red cabbage and papaya salad was good. My wife's Mahi Mahi was good. The prices are too high for the value of the food. You pay for the ambience."

  • "I have to admit, I love a good tiki bar and seek them out when I travel. I had seen this on the Layover and thought cool, I have to go here on my next trip. I would consider myself a foodie so you can imagine how disappointed I was when I saw the bad reviews on the food. I made dinner reservations anyway and told my husband about the reviews and that we would have some drinks and appetizers and see what we thought. The apps we so go (we had the special) we decided to stay for dinner. I have to say everything we had was great and I would go back. The ambiance is true tiki and is a must for any parrothead at heart."

  • "When I first came to SF decades ago a fellow new arrival talked me into going to the Tonga Room. Even then I thought it was cheesy, having previously lived in the Islands. Against my better judgment I was talked into returning. Big mistake. Cheesier than ever and the food was worse. I will leave it to the tourists who have never been to Hawaii, although I can't imagine that very many guests of the Fairmont have not."

  • "We had a wonderful Father's Day dinner at the Tonga Room. We got the Aina Ahiahi Ali’i for two, which is the more expensive of the family style dinners. Appetizers were tasty, although my husband didn't like that there was cilantro in the egg rolls. The chicken and shrimp entrees were fairly conventional, but delicious. The pork was a pulled pork - unusual and tasty. We love Brussels sprouts and they did not disappoint. The forbidden blend rice wasn't as flavorful as we had hoped. The pineapple rum cake was great - we ate it all even though we were stuffed. My husband wanted to try out all the tropical drinks, so I was the designated driver. But they made virgin drinks to match his, and they were fine. The service was exceptional."

  • "You couldn't have convinced me a place like this still existed if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. An over-the-top, campy Tiki Lounge that actually serves decent food. Delicious shrimp dumplings, pork belly sliders and mushroom egg rolls. If you're into rum-based drinks served in a coconut with umbrellas, this is your spot. Wonderful service, and a sense of surrealism from your surroundings makes for a memorable experience."

  • "We made a reservation for 6/7/14 for us and our family and had a great time. Do make sure you leave early to find parking, otherwise they have a great Valet service at the Fairmont Hotel. The Hotel is stunning and historic which makes for a great walk or elevator ride to the Tonga room floor. The staff is very friendly, and the ambiance is fantastic. The drinks are good but we had their "Scorpion Bowl" that you share with 4 people. Don't have to many of those, they are strong! The menu does tell you, "BEWARE...One too many may sting! We ordered the "Ohana size" size plates for 5 people. One plate was the "Mango Glazed Mahi Mahi", very tasty but not enough for 5 people to share, just a heads up. We will be back again soon."

  • "We arrived a few minutes early so we had to wait until our table was ready but the hostess was gracious and kind and our wait was not long. Our waiter introduced himself and got our drink orders immediately. Our drinks arrived quickly but we were unsure about wanting to eat anything so our waiter said he would give us a few minutes. It seemed he was gone a little longer than a few minutes but since we were enjoying our drinks and the live band we didn't mind too much. We decided to just have dessert along with our drinks and at that point it seemed our waiter was more attentive. I cannot recommend any of the desserts we had. They were not very flavorful or they were unbalanced. But the live band was great and we still had a lot of fun."

I feel like you're mostly paying for the atmosphere...but it's not good enough for the price we paid. Wouldn't say DON'T go, but I would say prepare to pay a LOT for an ok experience. The floating stage is pretty cool though!"

  • "My boyfriend brought me here for a very romantic evening, and boy was it. We got engaged that night. The staff went out of their way to make sure our experience was nothing less than incredible. After dinner, they gave us a ring side table by the dance floor. The ambiance made this special evening more than memorable. I can't speak highly enough of our experience there. The food and drinks were great, but most of all it's the staff that made everything so magical. Hats off to the staff and a thousand thanks. We will be back !! I almost forgot to mention the decor. We felt as if we were on some tropical island, millions of miles from the city below. Incredible !!!"

  • "If you're looking for a fun, and festive evening in SF, then you have to go to the Tonga Room. I went for a recent girls night, and was very pleased. The Tonga Room offers festive cocktails, albeit pricey, served in a coconut or pineapple. The pineapple mai thai is worth the splurge. The dinner menu is pretty good, but you go here for the atmosphere more than a food. During our dinner a live band started performing on the moving boat inside the restaurant as a faux thunder and lightening storm periodically struck. Very fun for a night out on the town. "

  • "We reserved our table for 4 at 6:45 which worked out well to hear the live music around 8. The scallops were over-the-top delicious as was the Forbidden rice dish. Two of us shared the ginger punchbowl drink which was yummy but the pineapple drink was small and not worth the price. Service was outstanding as was the music. The Tonga Room is a must go for tourists as well as for locals. Great food and good entertainment. "

  • "After being seated, we waited almost 45min to one hour before the waiter came back for our dinner order. The food selection was poor. No salmon?? Or other good options?? Our party of four were all disappointed with the dinner. The atmosphere was great and fun, band was fantastic. Also, when dinner was done, once again we had to wait almost another 30min to get our check, even after asking for it several times. Two of us from our party would probably return to the Tonga room, the other two said definately not again."
