Diner Reviews
  • "If you want to experience Toast ...go during the week. The weekends are ridiculously crowded and the wait is on average 35-45 minutes. The food is excellent...the french toast and Bellinis are to die for. Loved having an early am meeting there. Only issue was ...I arrived and they didn't see my reservation. Quite embarrassing since I had my other party ask for it....in case they got there first. But we were seated quickly and all was well."

  • "The food was great. The selection was limited and the noise level was loud."

  • "The dishes are always interesting and well made. House special drinks are very good. Service is friendly, attentive and knowledgable. Too bad they took the bone marrow with toast off the menu."

  • "Some options were outstanding. Breaded, fried artichokes were spectacular. Filet mignon of veggies. Beet app was fair. Little taste in beets, unfortunately. Short ribs were very tender. Chicken and waffles......another story. 3 pieces of chicken, one was not fully cooked. That's not good. Cheddar waffles sounded better than they tasted. Sausage and sage gravy was quite tasty. I would have loved some maple syrup, as well. Espresso pudding tasty but waaaaay too heavy. Mousse it up. I think diners would appreciate that. Maybe hazelnut espresso mousse. Also, restaurant was cold. I get it, it's winter, but when I am paying for dinner, I expect you to turn UP the heat. That's the price of doing business. I'd go back 4 lunch/ bfast, skip dinner."

  • "We frequent this restaurant and it is almost always a five-star experience. They have some newer servers that aren't quite as familiar with the drink list, etc, as they probably should be...hopefully they will get the hang of it soon. The servers used to be so personable, and now only a small handful of them are left (and they did make it outstanding - perfect blend of making sure everything was spot on and giving you your space all at the same time). The menu is great. Great vegetarian options - far better than the typical vegetable pasta dish or fancy salad. I am talking mushroom roll in brick paper with ragout; stuffed butternut squash, etc. Wine list is good. Beer list is extensive. Great for any occasion and kid-friendly."

  • "On this frigid winter day , this eatery warmed our hearts. We celebrated my son's birthday with a mimosa breakfast . We enjoyed the Gouda omelette and egg plate as well . Bottomless cups of coffee kept replenishing . The eatery marked the birthday celebration with a scrumptious mocha creme delight ."

  • "Been there many times since we live in the city. Food is always good and open table brought us back. Bottom line food is good."

  • "We had dinner Friday 2/20. Our server Emma did not know the menu. She was annoyed that we had some food allergy questions and had an attitude. Our food was tasteless and greasy. We ate almost nothing. The music was blasting and the kids next to us were covering their ears. The manager was very nice and knew we had issues with the food yet never offered us a complimentary drink or anything. Toast is an awesome brunch restaurant only! Thank you"

  • "The food, people and service was great. Tables are kinda close however the other guest was friendly as we looked at each other meals saying " oooooo, what did you get, I'll try that later. lol"."

  • "Very good experience at Toast. Friendly wait staff, a good variety of breakfast and lunches offered. We easily got a table with a last minute reservation but when we arrived it was quite busy and well attended. The only problem we experienced was we couldn't offer an espresso as their machine was temporarily in repair. Great location. Highly recommended."

  • "Great place for dinner. Beautiful decor and delicious food. My husband had the pork belly and devoured it. I had the stuffed squash. Good but not amazing. We started with the shrimp and grits, and it was excellent. We paid at the table and took our drinks to the bar to have dessert. The peanut butter pie was great. We will definitely love to go back!"

  • "We've celebrated here for birthdays two years in a row and LOVE it. I had the stuffed butternut squash this year and it was incredible. We also had the best waiter we've ever had. Toast is the best!"

  • "The food was interesting and tasty. The portion size is definitely not the too oversized. The one issue is that the restaurant is a bit overrun by Birmingham teens and the noise level is consistent with that clientele."

  • "We had a great meal. Everything from the shrimp and asparagus appetizers to the gnocchi, butternut and chicken dishes were simply amazing. Heck even my daughters cheese pizza was awesome. Everything tasted fresh... Our server was very attentive even on a busy sat evening. It's similar to Zolas in Ann Arbor in ambience....so while we had a great time, it may not be the best for a "special occasion"."

  • "I was meeting a friend for dinner who I had not seen in a long time and wanted a quieter restaurant that would allow us to talk to each other without screaming and since the weather outside was truly frightful also wanted a cozy, warm atmosphere. The restauarant was perfect. Our waiter (Tad) was phenomenal - very attentive without being too cloying. He made some great menu suggestions which I followed - the short ribs were fantastic. Yes, they were prepared per the menu description, but it was so much more than the description. I was VERY happy with the meal, the service, the ambiance. Overall, a great experience."

  • "Great food and atmosphere--vibrant but doesn't try too hard to be super trendy. Making reservations for dinner is a good idea unless you don't mind strolling around downtown B'ham (great in nice weather). Great wine and beer list, too, and the servers are personable and do their jobs well. The food accommodates a wide variety of dietary preferences. Salads and desserts are pretty standard, but the entrees have consistently been above par compared to other restaurants in the same price point. Mine and my husband's personal favorite is the pork belly with toasted orzo mac and cheese. Toast has been great for brunch, date nights, and dinner with friends..it won't disappoint you!"

  • "Brunch at Toast is delightful. They have an extensive menu to choose from, satisfying your need for sweet or savory. I found the food good, but ultimately uninspired. However, would still recommend."

  • "First off I never give reviews to restaurants, but I had to for this one, because I'm a foodie I had high expectations when we got there, and boy did they deliver, the food was delicious, even better than expected I had the pork belly and my gf had the hake fish, my gf is an awesome cook and usually gets disappointed when ever we go out but she was quite impressed, our waiter I think his name was guy was great, very attentive, and the whole experience was just awesome. Can't wait to go back and try the chicken and waffles."

  • "This was our first visit here. I had booked a table for 6 via Open Table because they were available though not knowing what to expect. Turned out to be a great place, lots of fun, awesome menu and our waiter was fabulous ! He put up with all of our questions, requests for recommendations and menu adjustments ( for diet restrictions etc). I don't live in MI but next time I'm back for work, I will certainly come back here again. Also the surrounding area is full of quaint shops and happy hour bars."

  • "An escape from the blustery cold this eatery was the ideal place. Seated in the warm and cozy fireplace room, we were warmly greeted by our server. Hot coffees soon followed. We enjoyed the delicious Parisian and the Mushroom omelette with homemade Challa and multi grain breads . What a true delight !"

  • "I love this place for either lunch or breakfast but have not had much luck with dinner recently. Our waiter was not as informative on the menu and miss informed me on a plate which I ended up disliking and all he could say was "ops". Give it a try and let me know what you think."

  • "We chose this place and were pleasantly surprised. The music was really upbeat and cool without being too loud. The food was a southern/northern twist and moderately priced. While not fine dining, I would recommend for an interesting night out. Decor was campy with a unique eye."

  • "Best choice. Never had dinner there before, just breakfast and lunch. But wanted to try something different. Ordered many things and the four of us shared. Every dish was excellent. Quiet night...a Monday night with first snow so staff had lots of time to chat. Charming young people. Much louder and busier when I've been there for breakfast and lunch. Can't wait to go back. Never had a single dish I didn't love there."

  • "Have been at Toast several times, always enjoy the food and ambiance. It's an eccentric and eclectic place, but non-threatening, low-key, interesting and fun. Definitely something different compared to the other Birmingham eateries. They always have interesting music in the background - some blues and SRV the night we were there. Have heard some 80's retro music in the past. Music is hear-able, but not obtrusive."

  • "This was a special day as we were planning a future event at this venue. The manager has many great ideas to make our future event very special. Meanwhile as usual our breakfast that day was amazing. The menu has so many offerings and we are making our way through it and trying it ALL. The waitstaff is always pleasant and the coffee just keeps coming! We love the variety of mugs. The service was quick and we were able to have our meeting and be on our way. Nearby municipal parking is always a plus. Outdoor seating was still available on this late October morning. The little village streets were becoming busy with shoppers."
