  • "We went for lunch, with plans to walk along the beach afterwards.. However the weather turned and it poured with rain.. So no romantic stroll on the beach.!! The view from the restaurant is fantastic as was the good and service. A very peasant lunch, if they could of controlled the weather, I'm sure they would of.."

  • "We were quite disappointed with the overall experience at the Thistle Lodge Restaurant. We requested a table by the window to view the Gulf and shore, but were crammed into a table with NO room between us and the adjoining tables. The food was fair to mediocore and expensive. Service uneven. Not worth the value for money."

  • "While I love this beautiful restaurant, our meal was disappointing. We were there for Sunday Brunch. The poached eggs were undercooked and accompanied by two undercooked asparagus.The dish was ok, but not outstanding. My partner's meal was, well, strange. He got the blackened shrimp dish. It had two shrimp and an oddly spiced conglomeration of mainly noodles and some peas and potatoes. The desserts were excellent. Particularly the key lime cheesecake. I just wish the main meal had been something to write home about. For the price, it should have been!"

However, wonderful evening at this restaurant on the water at Sanibel Is. FL. Most unusual entre of tempura snapper wherein the whole fish is presented. Enjoyed it once I figured out how to eat it...."

  • "First thing I noticed was how clean everything was. Hostess called me by name. Seated us right away. Talked about how she enjoyed coming to work every day and it showed. Waitress was friendly and efficient. The view was incredible. Menu was varied and the wine list extensive. The food was good. Over all I gave it a rating of 5 stars. It was a very enjoyable experience. Thank you"

  • "We were vacationing and had brunch one Sunday and dinner on our last night on Sanibel. Both experiences were wonderful as we were waited on by the most professional and knowledgable waitress (Natalie?) The food is soooo delicious and dinner was especially delightful with our waitress making sure my cocktail was exactly how I liked it and then helping me choose a glass of wine-we loved everything-starters, mains and dessert and tea. What a beautiful restaurant, lovely decor, gorgeous view of the Gulf-worth every penny"

  • "This is one of the original structures on the island built by the original homesteaders. The place is really great (small so reservations are a must) and the view is fabulous. The waitstaff was outstanding and the Food was Superb! My daughters loved everything that was brought to the table (and that can be a tough one with teenagers)."

  • "We were in Florida for 2 weeks, and the last night was my husband's birthday, we decided to go to a nice place we had not been before. This was right on the beach with a great view. The food was excellent. The server suggested the Foi Gras appetizer and since I had never had it, decided to try since I had not had before. Was really good, and the preparation over French toast was delicious. Tried the trio of sea bass, scallop and shrimp, each was prepared perfectly. I did mention when I made the reservation on Open Table we were celebrating a birthday, and they gave us a card with a 10% discount, that we were able to use that night, which was appreciated. Seth was our waiter, he was great."

  • "Service was exceptional, server was very prepared with good knowledge of dishes, did not have to wate for drink refills. Prices were high, but expected being they only serve fresh ingredience, fresh fish, and prime cuts of beef. Food was well seasoned and full of flavor. Located right near the beach facing the Gulf of Mexico provided a nice dining experience. Was a good choice to spend my 10 year anniversary."

  • "Thistle Lodge offers large windows with great Oceanside views. The restaurant feels like a large living room or dining salon. Service is excellent, atmosphere informal but classy. Food is not as special as it used to be in my opinion. Sunday brunch was unremarkable. Belgium waffle was soft rather than crispy. Maple syrup was not real. Smoked salmon app was a big better but again a step down from our previous visit a year or two ago. Still, worth a trip for the views and atmosphere."

  • "Not a bad seat in the house. The menu with fabulous specials is extensive yet filled w/ great meat/fish and vegetable choices. Loved the fact that I could order the Special of the day, blackened soft shell crabs as an entree. We had such a great time at dinner we stayed at the bar and listened to the piano entertainment and watched all the happy people sitting in the bar area enjoying a romantic evening. I want to go back to Sanibel just so I can eat here, again. Next time we are bringing our children and daughter in law, too. We must share with our family this fabulous gem of a restaurant."

  • "This restaurant is a real gem. Made reservations here since we were going to the Sanibel playhouse. The ambiance and setting could not have been better. The seafood and Steak dinners were fantastic. Overlooking the gulf provided a fabulous view. The drinks were fantastic, and the ladies that had the house wine were very impressed. If you get to Sanibel Island, put the Thistle Lodge on your restaurants to enjoy."

  • "Dinner was a mixed affair, which is a little disappointing given the place's reputation and the cost of the meal ($175 for 2, including 2 glasses of wine). The lobster bisque was great; the entrees were only OK (diver scallops; blackened yellow snapper). Not bad, just not very interesting or flavorful. Both dishes were served over the same thing - white rice and arugula. Again, not very imaginative. The server was friendly but the meal was timed poorly; she brought out my wife's entree while she was still eating her appetizer. She apologized for doing it, but she still did it anyway. Not what you would expect from fine dining. Overall, it was one of those dinners you walk away from and say "That probably wasn't worth it"."

  • "Our main purpose in coming to Sanibel was to have lunch at the Thistle Lodge. The view of the Gulf of Mexico from the dining room window is superb. The Pear Martini and the Frizzled Clam Strips were a perfect start. The Cobb Salad was a magnificent treat, a blend of greens topped with bacon, egg, avocado and cucumber. The dessert of Crème Brule was outstanding."

  • "I was a little bit skeptical about going this restaurant at first, but after i left that night i had a whole new perspective on it. I loved the feel of relaxation. I had the blackened yellow tail snapper...DELICIOUSO! and my wife had the Char-grilled Wild Caught King Salmon Filet... and she loved it. THe service was great...Felt welcome the moment i walk through the door. THis was practically a place to take your special someone and enjoy each other. If you are looking for that romantic atmosphere and all around place where you can just focus on your significant other, well than this is it!! I know I will be going back very soon!"

  • "Our Valentine's dinner at the Thistle Lodge was truly outstanding. The ambiance was romantic, though after sunset you don't get to take advantage of the beautiful Gulf views normally available. The chef offered a menu of ~7 selections, with accompanying salads & dessert, for this special night. Our Chateaubriand for Two was perhaps the best prepared beef that either of us had ever had. They were even up to the challenge of serving one rare and the other medium-well, both perfectly prepared. The one negative was our server, who was mediocre at best. It was definitely a busy night and we were seated at prime time (8pm), but she could have done better. We'd still go back though, because the food was scrumptious and a prior visit was great."

  • "This is a beautiful restaurant with a great location right on the gulf and lovely views from almost every table of the gulf of Mexico. The food was well prepared and tasty but the portions are huge. My veal entree could have fed 3 people, and while I enjoyed it - a lot of it went to waste. Also note that the entree price does not include any starch items and I saw not a vegetable in site (these are all extra side dishes), you would think at these prices rice or potato and vegetables should be included. They have a nice wine list with lots of reasonable choices and quite a few wines by the glass. If you like large portions, this is your place, but I prefer quality over quantity."

Would have requested to have one of their tables for 2 with a wonderful view of the beach! Am hoping that that can happen for our Open Table reservation for Feb. 14th for an early dinner."

  • "They might just have been having a bad night, but the place seemed disorganized. There were tables that had been left unmade, with candles left on the chairs awaiting placement right next to us for close to an hour. The lobster bisque we ordered came out cold. When they heated it up, the decorative Armagnac foam dissolved; when the reheated servings arrived, they looked pathetic, with no garnish at all. We waited for more than an hour for the main course. The food itself was ok, but not nearly good enough to justify the very high prices, even if the service had been better."
