Diner Reviews
  • "The food and service was what we expected...very good. However the noise level made it difficult to converse. Also, with the low level lighting, the menu as difficult to read."

  • "Excellent dining experience. Could only be improved by reducing the amount of noise in the restaurant. Food was unique and beautifully presented. A special occasion restaurant for sure."

  • "Very nice restaurant that takes pride in everything local. They are in an old retail space and helping revive a part of downtown Utica. Staff was great and food was excellent."

  • "A visit to "The Tailor & the Cook" was well worth the drive from Connecticut. The dinner was amazing starting with the fresh baked bread and marvelous maple syrup butter. A cheese platter followed with a variety of locally made cheeses which our server did an excellent job describing in detail. The main courses were also raised in the Mohawk Valley and were the best I've had in a long time. Make sure you save room for the cheesecake with fresh berries as you will not be disappointed. My only complaint was the tables are a little close together, but this shouldn't keep anyone away from Utica's best restaurant. I will definitely be back the next time I'm in the area."

  • "Outstanding appetizer of lamb merguez sausage. Great mains of flat-iron steak and veal chop. Sensational strawberry cheesecake dessert. We loved the Seam Ripper cocktail and sparkling rose wine. We did not live being billed an extra 30 for cocktails we never ordered and never drank."

  • "After not having been to the Tailor and Cook for more than 6 months I was delighted that things only got better than I remembered. The waitress remembered us and treated us as if we were regulars. The lamb sausage starter was the perfect start. The salad though small was tasty. The pork chop was perfectly cooked, but I could do without the lovage (it overwhelmed everything else). My date had the haddock. There was plenty of food on our plates and we were well sated. We skipped dessert. This place has great service and the food to match."

  • "As always, an awesome dining experience. Family asks to dine here whenever in town. The atmosphere is electric; the food is incredibly good and is presented wonderfully. Menu selection is superb, interesting and a tasty tribute to the palate. The plating is an event in and of itself and enhances the dining exploration. Inventive drinks. Seared scallops awesome!"

  • "This is a great local restaurant that really utilizes a farm to table approach sourcing it's produce and meats etc from local farms. The menu and the taste reflect the freshness and quality of the ingredients"

  • "Once I described the Tailor and the Cook as the best restaurant within 50 miles. This recent occasion, at least our fourth, may have extended the mileage to 75. A very good meal for a special occasion, but certainly a good spot for a great night out. The staff is very good; we've had the same waiter for three of the times we've been there, and he's excellent."

  • "This was our second visit. The first time was much better. For some reason, we didn't get the complimentary shooters, amuse bouches and my wife's dessert was not fully cooked. We sat watching everyone else getting the other complimentary items, but since we already had our entrees, what's the point in asking at that point? For the price, it should have been top notch, but it wasn't. We went for our anniversary and were a little disappointed, especially when the rhubarb was as hard as celery in the rhubarb crumble."

  • "While the presentation was exquisite, most of the selections lacked flavor and excitement. The lamb sausage appetizer was the best part of the meal. My pork chop was dry (ordered pink) and the garlic (A forgotten ingredient) polenta was soupy. Soft shell crab, which got mixed reviews, primarily too much cilantro. The very expensive desserts were a big disappointment, chocolate tart had no depth of flavor and the vanilla gelato was tasteless. While the Shiraz and organic Chardonnay were a big hit, the narrow beer menu was greatly over shadowed by the novella of a wine list. Wait staff was very pleasant but the host ( could not figure out who that really was) left us hanging at the bar. For $300 and all the hype, I was very disappointed."

  • "quite trendy, loved the service and the wait staff. not great for vegaterians but for the rest of the world there are delightful options. a little too noisy for a romantic dinner. very impressed with their choice of using local food sources."

  • "This restaurant is a little out of the way so if you don't know Utica, you may have a difficult time finding it. Good wine selection, several beers on tap, and outstanding wait staff make the beginning of your meal very enjoyable. The appetizer selection included a locally sourced cheese plate (including local honey comb) that I would recommend. 3 out of 4 people at my table ordered the steak entree. The steaks were cooked correctly but were under-seasoned and unfortunately included a large glob of pesto on top of the meat itself that was difficult to get around. Standard desserts, nothing to write home about."

  • "Visited town this weekend & dined with friends Saturday night for the the first time. We were blown away. If you are going to be in Utica make sure your trip includes snagging a hard to get reservation for dinner here. IF you live in Utica or the immediate area and you haven't been - what in the world are you waiting for? Creative, innovative, fresh and delicious farm to table food cooked with love and delivered via exception service. My veal brisket entree with fresh greens and pearl barley was a heavenly delight... a handful of amuse bouche sent by the chef - beet & strawberry gazpacho, asparagus custard with smoked sea salt - enhanced the meal and our senses as we enjoyed great conversation and the lovely warm vibe of the space. GO!"

  • "This was not our first meal at The Tailor and the Cook, but had been a while since our last. The moment you walk in the door, you are greeted with warm, friendly smiles. The room is alive with sighs, sounds and smells. The food is top notch, but the service is where they really shine. All of our servers were friendly and attentive- and they knew the product. I would recommend others to dine here."

  • "Food was delicious and different from regular area restaurants. A nice break from the norm. Liked that they serve area grown foods. Service was excellent. Ambiance was like being in NYC. Nice to have a place to go to when we want to treat ourselves to a special evening. I am a desert lover... absolutely loved the home made goats milk gelato!!"

  • "Went here for my girlfriend's birthday after reading rave reviews. With high expectations we were not disappointed. All of the food and ingredients are local / organic which the waitstaff is very informative about. The atmosphere is very rustic and intimate. Now for the food, it's very cuisine style and very different from the typical Italian / American style around here. The bread, appetizer, salad and entree were all incredible. I literally scraped my plate when I was done due to how good it was. Everyone was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. The atmosphere was dim and intimate, great place for a one on one night out to relax. I would highly recommend T&C not only for the experience but also for their use of all local products."

  • "I have been trying to get to The Tailor and the Cook since it opened. I finally made it the other night. It was beyond what I had hoped for, and so worth the wait. We started with the selection of local cheeses, each one superb for their individual flavors and textures. Also enjoyed the charcuterie plate with an assortment of smoked and dried meats as well as duck confit. The simple green salad was a perfect bridge from starters to entrees. I had the shrimp and clams with lamb sausage and my husband had the venison chop with baby kale and french toast. The restaurant is beautiful! Simple table sets, beautiful use of the buildings original architecture and appetizing decor. The service was exceptional with great attention to detail."

  • "My wife and I live in the greater Utica area and chose our first time at Taylor and the Cook for our anniversary. Everything about our dining experience was outstanding. We try to eat as much locally grown and organic as possible. The "birthplace" of all of our food was explained in detail, right down to the butter! The wait staff was friendly, personable, and down to earth. Last but not least, the food tasted unbelievable! I will and already have, recommend The Taylor and the Cook to all of my friends. "
