Diner Reviews
  • "Lovely surroundings, pleasant atmosphere, staff very attentive. More than satisfied with the variety and quality of food served. We enjoyed ourselves immensely. "

  • "Had a wonderful Easter brunch. The food was first class. Selection was more than adequate and the service was top notch. The Shrimp and Grits is top shelf."

  • "A cozy but unpretentious spot in a comfortable old hotel. Very friendly, accommodating service and delicious food that was reasonably priced. Doesn't get the attention it deserves in a town loaded with great restaurants...I will be back."

  • "Found Open Table while surfing the internet and by using it found The Swamp Fox. Nice upscale restaurant. The food is a little on the high side...but on Saturday evenings - what a deal! Prime Rib on Saturday $19.99 for an 8 oz prime rib, and two sides. Can't beat that and it was awesome! We had a wonderful time. Not a high volume restaurant....less seating, but had a piano player too. The ambience was incredible. And to top off our night, my family (big CA Angel fans), were able to meet Troy Glaus who was dining there (former Angel player). Totally made their night. He and his wife were very gracious as my husband and sons said hello."

  • "Food was outstanding! Interesting take on shrimp and grits and bacon wrapped pork chops moist and tasty. atmosphere was lacking. Loved the piano player but the resturant was too loud and bright to enjoy it. dim the lights and turn the piano towards the resturant might make all the difference."

  • "the location was perfect for our needs, but the restaurant didnt sparkle. We expected brunch, as did a few other patrons, and it was not available"

  • "Stopped in for a quick lunch and was pleasantly surprised at the quality of food. The place was kind of low key. Our server was pleasant and efficient. My boyfriend had the country fried steak and said it was good. I had the crab cake sliders and they were nice as well."

  • "For an area overcrowded with college students, it's nice to find a place that offers a bit of quiet with good food and service. A great place for a pre-concert or pre-theatre drink and light meal."

  • "Shrimp n Grits and Fried Oyster Po Boy really good. Service attentive. Will go back."

  • "We went on valentines which required the use of their "special" menu; $60 per person. While the food was just ok, it was nothing worthy of $60 per person-especially when we left hungry and disappointed. While the restaurant was less than half full it took over 10 min to just greet us and ask for our drink choice."

  • "Had a wonderful dining experience on Saturday evening. My nephew was visiting from Pittsburgh at we dined downtown several evenings. The Swamp Fox is a notable dining spot that doesn't seem to get the press it deserves. The food and the service were great and we will dine again."

  • "Overall Good Experience, small dining area though. The service was good and the everyone was friendly. I would visit again."

  • "We had a great dinner experience. Food was excellent as was service. Our server, Dima, was attentive but not overbearing. I had the fried shrimp appetizer and both I and my husband loved it. I had the salmon for dinner and substituted goat cheese grits for sweet potato mash and it was done without complication. My husband had the she crab soup and shrimp and grits, which were both very good. We took home pumpkin cranberry bread pudding for dessert and it was amazing. The only thing was I think they brought my husband sweet tea when he had asked for unsweet. Other than that, perfect experience, we want to come back for brunch!"

  • "There was a piano player at the entrance. There were families with their children. The dishes we had was small and elegant for a special occasion but a little pricey. The restauraunt sits in the heart of historic Charleston SC with much activities going on outside. Many shops in the area. The service was right on time and we even ordered the she crab soup which was delicious and not part of the special valentines dish. It was a more relaxed feel to this place and we thought we were overdressed but just about anyone would fit right in."

  • "I could not be more pleased with the outstanding food we had that night. This was not my first choice for valentines night (never been before) but I waited to long to make reservations at my other choices. Boy was I surprised...no regrets. I would make this a first choice after this experience."

  • "The experience at Swamp fox was superb from start to finish. The service was excellent and the cuisine unique and a work of art. The chef created a masterpiece out of an ordinary crab cake. Nothing about this fine dining experience was ordinary!! I will make this my restaurant of choice when visiting Charleston!"

  • "Waitress gave wrong check and credit card to both my brother-in-law and me, which could have presented very serious problems if we hadn't noticed."

  • "it was great. the waitress had a great sense of humor, the food was plentiful, not too much, just right. I would highly recommend for any occasion. will definitely come back on my next visit to Charleston. Thank you for a memorable evening. Note: the bartender fixed a "professional" drink and the waitress served in a "professional" mannor."

  • "We made a reservation for Restaurant week, but we all found it a better value to order from the menu. We do not normally order an appetizer and dessert, Three of 4 liked their meals. One ordered fried chicken and said it was soggy and salty. The background musicians are very good, and the mood is relaxing and mellow. Service very good."

  • "Swamp Fox was very good. I was a little worried when we walked in because there were only two other couples there on a Saturday night! The piano was playing, it was quiet and my College of Charleston daughter and I had a lovely meal together!!"

  • "Swamp Fox has never let me down. I've been there for business breakfasts, lunches and dinners and can always count on the fried green tomatoes. My friend says they have the best crab cakes in town. There are more exciting restaurants in Charleston, but the location can't be beat and it's a lot quieter than any of the trendy Upper King spots. It's a good place to take out-of-town guests, because of the variety on the menu. Most dishes are locally sourced -- the farmer's market is right across the street."

  • "We had a great lunch and went back for dinner and couldn't be more surprised in the difference between the two. Dinner was awful (stuffed pork and my sister had steak and both were poor). We didn't bring it up to the waitress because of time constraints."

  • "I like to take guests here before seeing plays at the College of Charleston and Pure Theatre. The she-crab soup and fried green tomatoes are always a hit and we love the restaurant's commitment to the local farmer's market. It's one of the few restaurants on King Street that is quiet enough for a nice conversation. Don't let the fact that it's a hotel restaurant turn you off; this is not the product of a chain, but a fine local dining venue in a great location with a nice view of Marion Square. The prices are reasonable, the service good and they also do a lovely brunch. Most recently we went wanting a light pre-theatre bite; there were plenty of lovely and imaginative small plates and salads to choose."
