A word from The Source
The Source is the first fine dining restaurant in the nation’s capital headlined by Master Chef Wolfgang Puck. Designed by EDG, the three-level restaurant is the signature dining experience at the Newseum, an interactive museum of news. The Source offers two distinct dining experiences as well as a private room located on the lower level that seats up to 40 guests. The ground floor bar and lounge where guests enter offers approachable dining in a casual setting and features a traditional Japanese Izakaya menu offering sushi, sashimi, noodle dishes and authentic "Robata" grilled dishes. Upstairs, guests can enjoy a menu that features Puck’s modern take on Asian cuisine. The Source is the recipient of many awards and accolades including #3 ranking on Washingtonian Magazine's "Top 100 Restaurants" list, "2008 New Restaurant of the Year" Award and "2008 Restaurant of the Year" from DC Magazine plus has received three stars from Washington Post food critic Tom Sietsema. Diner Reviews
  • "Great food but service and ambiance was to be desired. Music was an odd mix and too quiet. Service was terrible! Had to search for a waiter to order dessert."

  • "I have been coming here for years and it never disappoints. Great location to bring friends from out of town."

  • "Went here for brunch on Saturday. I thought the 8 choices for $42 was a great deal. I had the cocktail with basil and cucumber-- nice and refreshing. The noodles with oxtail is a very generous portion, as was the fried rice. I loved all the food, but nothing really stood out from another. I would go again."

  • "In my humble opinion, this is one of the top three dining spots in DC and the BEST asian fusion style food. I highly recommend their asian pear cocktail, garlic dumplings, pork chop, and their little green bean/walnut starter. YUM!"

  • "The food was excellent and beautiful to see. Then, down the stairs he came to be a charming host. We chatted, he signed his new book, Wolfgang Puck Makes It Healthy, This is a vibrant, light, happy place adjacent to the Newseum. We will seek it out whenever in DC."

  • "The food was excellent. I do not eat pork, so the chef made a substitute sauce for the scallops, and it was delicious. Wine list is also A.MA.ZING. We were a little disappointed that no one from the wait staff told us we had to order the chocolate souffle 20 minutes before we wanted it... a dessert menu was simply brought out AFTER our meal was done, and then when we attempted to order the souffle, we were told it would take a while. They admitted they dropped the ball in not telling us sooner. It was already 10:30 pm at that point, so we ended up skipping dessert altogether. Also, our waitress was not very attentive. She didn't come back to check on refills for drinks, and we had to ask someone else to get our waitress at one point."

  • "Every year we spend 3 or 4 days touring Washington, DC and each year we spend one dinner at Wolfgang Puck's The Source. This year we had my step-daughter and her husband. It was so nice to have the opportunity to treat them to such a very special restaurant. All four of us are foodies, as well as health driven eaters. The menu offers wonderful dishes which are both very interesting, and wonderfully healthy. Portions are expectedly small with prices expectedly high; it is after all a very up-scale restaurant. The highly skilled and professional staff members along with the special meals make the price very worth it every single year."

  • "I had been at the Source before. The food remains excellent. However, service was much less attentive than before. It was rather interesting since, there were several empty tables, even on a Thursday evening. There were no reason for the service to be less than attentive. I have no complain about the food ."

  • "Met a friend who had the thai chicken salad. I had eaten nearly everything on the menu so I tried the pastrami gone Korean. Delicious just enough and it comes in the little steam basket. Tender and tasty. The side dish of hot cucumbers was a bit much for me. The chef sent over a special treat of a cone of tuna sushi. These little gifts are what makes The Source special and wonderful and adds to the reason why it is my go-to in this neighborhood."

  • "I had not been to The Source since the year it first opened. On this visit, the service and food was just as I had remembered--excellent! I was one of a party of seven. The waiter helped us by going off menu to provide us with a platter that included a selection of at least six different dumplings for us to share--dim sum of sorts. It was fantastic! I had the scallops which were quite exceptional. The others in my party had the wok fired whole sea bass --which was an odd site but delicious--the rockfish and sichuan filet all of which were equally delicious and prepared to perfection. I did not have dessert as the appetizer and main course were plenty but I heard the 15-layer carrot cake was delightful."

  • "Wasn't amazed by the food. Good portion. Good wine list. Did not note specialty cocktails. Service was okay. I am not opposed to paying above average for restaurants however I felt that the pricing was not warranted for the food. We had to ask the waiter to refill our water quite a few times. Had to flag him down a couple of times for other needs. He was pleasant and somewhat knowledgeable but again for almost $400 meal/bottle of wine, expected more. Hostess staff were also all very nice and professional."

  • "Best Dim Sum in DC, even if it's only available on Saturday."

  • "The Source was exactly what you expect it to be, upscale, great service, great wine. Unfortunately for me, they only had two vegetarian entrees and no vegetarian apps. To top it off, my entree was subpar for what I'd expect from a Wolfgang Puck restaurant. Great for meat-eaters, my husband had the steak and loved it."

  • "We (two) had three apps (lamb on lettuce, chinese salad, and crabcake) and one entree (short ribs) plus fried rice side dish. The apps were way too large--wish the waitress had told us beforehand. In contrast, the fried rice was miniscule! Food quality was good. The sommielier could not find us a bottle of chardonnay under $100--very pricey wine list!"

  • "AMAZING!!! wow…was sent 1 comp. Did 16 plates total. Amazing flavors. Great sauces to go with everything. Great flavors in the dishes. Bao was freaking amazing!!! Nailed every dish. Very appealing presentations. Server super knowledgeable and very fun and playful banter. 5 out of 5!"

  • "Really nice sophisticated and fun place with excellent food. Service polite and informed but was slow and not terribly attentive. Wine by the glass servings/portions were unreasonably small, I'd estimate 3-4 oz. Buy a bottle."

  • "We had an amazing experience at The Source the other night. We were having a good time and not paying too much attention, but the waiter made several errors: included cilantro when we mentioned a strong aversion; brought the meat rare which had been requested well-done etc. Pretty soon a manager turned up and began overseeing our table personally. Although we requested no special favors or attention, when we got the check we saw it had been reduced substantially. To be truthful, we would have paid the full check and, although we would have noted the restaurant as prone to serious mistakes, I still would have given it high marks for the food. But their extraordinary efforts to do right by us will make me a loyal patron forever!"

  • "Even if you don't like lamb (like me) you will enjoy this lamb. Everything our waiter recommended was perfect, the shrimp dumplings were so delicate. The shumai was delicious. We enjoyed delicious wine service, a friendly staff and an excellent dinner. We would recommend it to anyone."

  • "While the food was very good (not outstanding), the service (or extreme lack of) diluted the experience so much that we will not be going back. It is a shame. I expected better from a Wolfgang Puck restaurant. We sat down for an early dinner at 6:15 - intentionally to beat the crowd. The service was so slow and our waiter disappeared for such great lengths of time that it took us 3.5 hours to complete a dinner. This was not a 7 course meal. We had a couple of apps, for dinner we had steak and salmon, and we had dessert. We were warned that the Chocolate, Chocolate would take 1/2 hour so we ordered something else. Our dessert still took more than 1/2 hour to get to our table. I would highly recommend NOT going to this restaurant."

  • "Our group of nine had a wonderful evening at Source closing the place at about midnight. Everyone's meal was excellent - the duck, froglegs and salmon marvelous! I recommend it to anyone who wants a somewhat casual restaurant with good drinks and outstanding food."

  • "Second time going here for dinner. Service was poor - not attentive - had to track our waiter down a few times. Shades on windows were drawn down too far so could not see out window at dinner time - sun was not an issue. Appetizers are much better than the entrees. Short rib meat fell off the bone but was dry - very little sauce - uninspiring. Duck was OK - supposed to be their stellar dish - would have preferred meat taken off the bone. Lobster was very pricey and average at best - the sauce was bland. Will not return for dinner - maybe the bar is a better bet. At $400 for 3 people definitely not worth that price for the caliber of food and service."

  • "We've eaten here a number of times and always enjoyed our meals but our lunch was underwhelming to say the least. The two appetizers (sushi and lamb lettuce cups) were excellent but our empty plates sat in front of us for far too long. When our entrees finally came (rockfish and pastrami sandwich), they were only ok. The pastrami was too fatty and there wasn't enough of it. The fish was meh. Again, our plates sat in front of us for way too long before being cleared. Then someone came by to offer us dessert menus when we'd already chosen our dessert. My husband ordered a coffee that never came. The carrot cake, as always, was delicious, but the overall experience was not what I had learned to expect at The Source and we won't be returning."

  • "We had a great lunch here. There were many wonderful options and the server was attentive to my guests food allergies. The only critic I would have is that service was a bit slow and once the server took our order she did not return to check on the table, refill our waters, etc. until the food was ready. I was surprised how long it took to prepare 2 salads! They do have a rush lunch menu though, I would suggest ordering from it if you are, in fact, in a rush, else you'll be there over an hour. Will definitely be back to check out their happy hour and brunch!"

  • "True to their promise, The Source had us in and out within the hour but never made us feel rushed. Our food was fantastic although we were a bit disappointed that much of the sushi that we wanted had not arrived or was not available. Still, I loved the soup and just wish there were more dumplings in there- delish! The Wangyu burger was also fantastic."

  • "I loved everything about the restaurant...except the size of the food. Its a given that the place is expensive, fancy and will cost you a nice dollar, but don't sell the customer short on the actual food. Even if prices had to be higher to accommodate a bigger portion size, you should do that rather than making the customer feel cheated when paying $30-40 for a full meal that is merely the size of an appetizer. I was ecstatic and let down at the same time. Haven't returned since. Though I loved the scenery."

  • "We expected much more form the restaurant connected to WP name. This is our second taste of WP restaurants and both experiences are the same: mediocre tasting overrated and very overpriced food presented in a great ambiance and by very good service. It's kind of similar experience when you are opening a beautifully wrapped and expansive box of candy but discover nothing really tasty about it. Nope, not a place for us. DC has much tastier choices then that."

  • "The food at The Source is consistently great. Unfortunately, service is not. The Source offers an "in and out in an hour" lunch deal, which usually works. Sadly, this time I am not sure what the server was doing, but after an hour and a half we had to ask for our dessert to go and for the check."

  • "This was my wife's favorite spot for dinner, with three kids in Ashburn we rarely get to dine out together. We order a 180.00 bottle of my favorite wine. After her terrible presentation of opening a 180.00 bootle of wine she pours it to us warm (the bottle was open and served warm). To further my disappointment she says "I'm sure you would like it colder!" The server never returned to ask how the wine was cooling off and how was the meal. The server's partner(who was awesome and very attentive) is the only reason why I left a 20% tip. Lastly, the warm chocolate chip cookies (another reason why we drive 45mins) were served ice cold. We wont be coming back:("

  • "I think the highlight of the Source are its small plates. Each are done exceptionally well. There wasn't a single one that wasn't good. I especially appreciated the Korean flavors in the Octopus dish."

  • "Tasty French-Asia cuisine of the WP brand. Predictable & pricy. Crowd is 30's to 40's professionals who look as if they are hoping to impress someone or anyone. The predictable Certainly adequate food for the WP brand with WP price-tag."

  • "A great dinner and they were accomidating to my gluten allergy by recommending items I could eat and also checked w/ the chef before confriming my order. However the server did not seem in a hurry for anything. There were several times were we ready to move on to the next thing (ordering, getting our bill, etc.) and there was no rush."

  • "Celebrated my birthday at The Source and had a lovely evening. Service was solid, though fell short of spectacular. But the food? Wow. Balanced and creative, drawing out the ingredients singularly and in combination. Do not skip the garlic chive dumplings, as they are out of this world. I will return to try the Izakaya bar/lounge on the ground floor, rather than the more formal upstairs restaurant. Thank you, Wolfgang Puck, for joining the DC restaurant scene and making a fabulous impression."

  • "From the never-ending line of people coming through the door, it is obvious that the Dim Sum Brunch at The Source is still the huge draw it deserves to be - always an amazing meal. And as usual, in addition to a number of favorites, new things pop up on the menu; this time we tried three of them and each one was just perfect. The chicken wontons were new to us and we continue to be amazed that Chef finds so many ways to layer flavors and also include just a hint of heat as an undertone. Each small plate was just beautiful and absolutely delicious!"

  • "We've eaten at many of the "top 100" restaurants in DC and this may be the most disappointing. The decor was tired, the food was good but not original and the portions small given the prices. Sometimes good but average food may be overcome by a warm and/or fun atmosphere. Nope."

  • "This was our third visit to the Source. The food was exceptional; the service was efficient and not overbearing. Love the chef's surprise. We are not really into dessert, but the cookies were awesome."

  • "The Dim Sum brunch menu offers a great variety of choices, from the Duck Bao bun to Lobster and Shrimp Spring Roll, to Scallion Pancake. The 8 tastes was recommended for the two of us, and it was the perfect amount. The staff was wonderful and their advice was very good. Each taste was very well balanced between hot, salty, sweet, smokey. The Wild Field Mushroom Dumpling was a standout in my mind. Seeing the other choices go past our table to others makes this a brunch we will return to for more choices. As the room filled with others the noise level never really grew, it was always easy to converse with a soft voice."
