Seating up to 40 people comfortably, a separate patio space connects adding an additional 12 outdoor seats. 2 long, 16 ft hardwood tables made of salvaged cypress give this room character. Each table seats up to 18, and an additional table for 6 is available.

  • "Have eaten at this restaurant several times with my wife and other couples, usually on a Friday or Saturday night. This was the first time hosting a business dinner for out of town clients in the middle of the week. As usual the service was great and the food was excellent. Everyone in our group had nothing but good things to say about the food and the atmosphere, and since they were all from the great foodie town of Chicago and have all experienced some great places to eat, I took their comments to heart. I recommend the smoked trout appetizer and the sweetbread entrée. Enjoy!"

  • "Although the food was outstanding as usual, our server (we sat in the bar area) was more interested in the men at the counter than actually doing her job. I just hope they tipped her well, because my typical generous tip was decreased. She mixed up drinks, and only brought us one dessert. The timing of everything was awful. We ordered specific after dinner cocktails to complement our dessert orders, but the one dessert came out 20 minutes after!! Even though we arrived with plenty of time to make an 8:00 show (5:30), we were scrambling because of such poor service. Even though the food was excellent, it'll be a while before I return because of this. Braunschweiger mousse, crispy lamb and panna cotta - outstanding!!"

  • "We enjoyed a nicely prepared and well presented dinner for 5 guests. We ordered 2 appetizers - trout and crab, and in our opinion, the trout won out by a landslide. Our entree selections were significantly varied, from a medium rare steak to the vegetarian Sformato, and each was beautifully prepared and presented. While the evening's meal was not overly rushed, it's worth a comment that our food was presented in a timely fashion. After spending over 3 hours at a different restaurant for a nice dinner, we finished a 3-course meal in under 90 minutes - a welcome difference!"

  • "I took my culinarily savvy best friend *who has lived in New York City for 9 years), and she said this was the best dinner she'd had in months. We had the appetizer lobster rolls to start, followed by fried the soft shell crab and fried catfish, and the house made gnocchi. All of the pasta is made-in house. Bartenders really know their stuff...I recommend the Rieger G&T. We had the special for dessert: homemade strawberry sorbet and hot chocolate cake--YUM."

  • "we started with the famed pork soup. It was tasty, but not sure what all the fuss is about from other reviewers. The beef carpacio appetizer was fantastic as was my special G &T. Our waiter was attentive and quick. I had the catfish with a side of the artichokes in lemon and my sister had a steak. Both were cooked to perfection, the fish flaky and moist and her steak was rare and flavorful. The sides were small but delicious. We enjoyed the experience and give this restaurant a thumbs up. It is a very vibrant and LOUD enviornment. The room is small and tables are quite close together which some will enjoy and others will not. It is not for families but seems to be for those dating and couples out with friends. Very hip and trendy!"

  • "My husband & I started our weekend with friends over happy hour at a downtown KC bar and had a terrible experience. Our weekend was saved when we moved on to dinner at The Rieger. Staff always makes people feel like they're glad to see you, something that does not happen as often as it should in the hospitality industry. Cocktails at The Rieger are a treat; I usually order the Pendergast bourbon specialty drink. I started dinner with the chilled artichoke soup; tasty but quite filling so I didn't finish it because I did not want to spoil my appetite. My husband and I both had the salmon special and enjoyed the most vibrantly colored Alaskan salmon either of us could remember. We finished with the ice box cake, an excellent summer treat!"

  • "After an evening at the West 18th Street Fashion Show, we enjoyed a very nice dinner at The Rieger. We have been in there for drinks on at least three occasions but this was our first chance for dinner. We split a beet salad for starters to go with great bread. While there were some interesting pairings on the menu, we stayed a little mainstream. My wife had the chicken and mashed potatoes while I have the pork loin and swiss chard. Good, solid entrees. Nothing on the dessert menu jumped out at as so we passed on it. Attentive service but the refilling of the water glasses was a little much considering we had a bottle on the table. Next time I will take some stools by the open kitchen and watch owner/chef Howard Hanna work his magic."

  • "The owner and head chef, Howard always has time to chat with his guests and share a bit of nostalgia about the process he's been through in developing this wonderful restaurant along with his superb staff. Never had one iota of negativity, staff in bad moods or unaccommodating. When someone asks me what I would recommend for food and character in Kansas City I always put this on their list. Great prices, excellent food and fun drink lists (The Cartographer or Prescription Only all excellent blends of new flavors). I also appreciate the choice of where this restaurant is located. It is a historic hotel building that served the working class formers of Kansas City. Be sure to check out the newly restored mural in the parking of the Rieger."

My brother introduced my husband and I to this gem and every time I/we go there it just seems to get better. Simple ingredients coming together to form complex tastes and not so much food on your plate you feel overwhelmed. These people don't have to try hard, they just know what they're doing. I love the open kitchen which allows you to see the staff working and making it all come together. Again, nothing to hide, just pure excellence back there in that kitchen."

  • "We had heard great things about The Rieger, read the online reviews, and so were excited to try the restaurant for the first time. We walked away disappointed. The service was good and attentive but the food was lackluster. My wife had rockfish, one of the evening specials, and her biggest disappointment was that the dish's morel mushrooms had their taste disguised by the accompanying sauce. I had the strip steak--the meat was bland and not of the quality expected in this steak town. Be prepared to eat off of a table the size of cocktail table--very difficult with dinner plates, bread, wine bottle and glasses, etc. Overall, it was a lackluster evening where we walked away disappointed."

  • "Went here for my birthday dinner and service and food were top notch. Joe was our server and was very accommodating. We got a bottle of Viña Sastre which was amazing, especially for the price. For appetizers we got the gnocchi and es cargot. The gnocchi was outstanding, a little crispy on the outside and melt in your mouth on the inside. The sauce for the es cargot was very good. I wasn't a fan of the puff pastry but my girlfriend enjoyed it. For dinner we had the Kc Strip and the striped sea bass. Both cooked to perfection. Joe remembered it was my birthday at the end of our meal and treated us with a couple glasses of champagne. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a romantic, historic spot with great food. "

My wife's KC Strip was not tender, nor cooked as ordered. Too much fat, too. Spinach was tasteless. The beer and wine were the best part of the meal. Maybe we ordered the wrong dishes, but bad KC Strip?"
