Diner Reviews
  • "Waiter was not knowledgable about whether chowder contained shrimp for food allergy. Waiter never picked up app plates, water not refilled, food was lukewarm and when we mentioned we were not satisfied he said okay and brought full bill."

  • "Beautiful property; pretty good food, but overpriced for quality ... which generally is true throughout Alaska; service was not good ... but may have been the server."

  • "The Pump House was not remarkable in any way. By 6:45 they were already out of any specials. Not that we will return to Fairbanks, but I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone who might be heading that way."

  • "We recently celebrated two occasions and our first choice for dining was The Pumphouse and its staff made sure it met our expectations with prompt, friendly service. We started with great drinks from the bar and fresh, plump, sweet raw oysters on the half shell. Our table enjoyed two of the Specialty Salads, two seafood dishes, and a chicken dish. Thank to the chef my husband and I enjoyed our favorite meal of pan-fried oysters. Dinner portions and food temperatures were ideal. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "Food was creative and very tasty, when we eventually received it. Waiter gave our food to someone else. Appetiser and salad brought out after main dish."

  • "While the prices seem a little high - the quality of the food definitely made it worth while. The salmon was great, but two in our party got the rib eye steak and now I want to go back and experience that myself"

  • "Very good food. Great service. My wife was very pleased, as was i."

  • "Dissatisfied with reservation process-- attended for special birthday occasion, arriving early to reservation but was unable to sit at outside patio despite obvious availability. Hostess was short with us and offered little accommodation. I know they are a busy place but our special occasion was dampened by the lack of customer attentiveness. Waitress was good and attentive despite being very busy. Noisy clatter of dishware directly behind our table. Overall, we won't be going back for our special occasions but maybe for drinks at the bar instead."

  • "A great Alaska/gold rush-era themed restaurant right on the Chena River with inside and outside seating options. The interior has a fascinating and eclectic decorative style that starts the moment you enter the restaurant. While it is one of the more expensive places to eat in Fairbanks, you are definitely getting what you pay for in quality and ambiance. Took out seven fairly picky adults on a special occasion and everyone had an amazing time. All of the food was very flavorful and creatively prepared with nothing that disappointed. A great place for one of those full-spectrum dinners where you leave full, but can't wait to come back and see new details and try different dishes."

  • "The service was not what I expected. Everyone seemed stressed and were yelling orders, which made our party feel awkward. We also were not offered drinks or given an explanation on how the brunch worked. The food was good and it was a beautiful day to eat outside, that's the only reason I would recommend brunch here."

  • "The Pump House was recommended by a local. We were not disappointed! Staff met every need and had time to chat if you were so inclined. The decor is comfortable and recalls the history of Fairbanks. Seated by a window in the back we watched countless patrons wander down the river walk. The grounds were well kept with parts of the old pump equipment on display. Did I mention the food was terrific! We fell in love with reindeer tenderloin cooked a perfect med. rare!"

  • "In the past we have had some of the best service and food at the Pump House, unfortunately this fell far short. It appears you have taken your eyes off the ball. Service: 1) wait-staffer seemed ambivalent to us. 2) we waited far too long for drink refills, or our wait-staffer to appear at all. Food: 1) ribeye steak was cooked ok but alder smoking could not be detected and it was pretty bland. 2) the potatoes could barely be identified as such and again pretty flavorless. 3) vegetables were severely over cooked, unappealing, and did not taste good. As longtime local residents we expect better from our dining establishments. Please return to your previous outstanding service and good, fairly priced food."

  • "The price was a little high for the quality and amount of food you get. Nothing to write home about. The service was pretty rough. I don't think I have any interest in going back. "

  • "Although the choices were varied, items from the warming units were not hot.Luke warm eggs Benedict is not too appetizing. I have gone to the brunch here throughout the winter and somehow it felt as if it needed to be changed up a bit, a little too predictable. I must say though that compared to earlier in the year, our server was extremely gracious and saw to it that we had all the beverage, water, coffee, or juice we could possible want. We were not rushed and that was very nice. "

  • "The food was very good and the service was excellent. Right on the Chena River so was very scenic. Drinks were good but a little over priced. "

  • "We had a wonderful celebration of our daughter's college graduation and mother's day. Our server was amazing and the food was beyond perfect for all of us. Three years ago we had our daughter's wedding and reception at the pump house. The price, atmosphere and the service for the wedding was better than we could have ever imagined. Thank you Chena Pump House!"

  • "My dinner last Saturday night at The Pump House in Fairbanks, AK was VERY good! I chose the house mixed green side salad and the Elk Meatloaf entrée. BOTH were very good. The pickled beets on the side salad were delicious with the yummy blue cheese dressing option and the Elk Meatloaf with Mashed Potatoes was a great example of an Alaskan comfort food taken to a higher dining level. Add this great food to the authentic northern atmosphere and quick & friendly service and The Pump House is a winner in my book! I WILL be returning for dinner sometime soon. "

  • "This is the best place to go for Sunday Brunch! The variety of food for the buffet is wonderful and it all tastes terrific!! When visitors come to town, we always take them to Pump House for Sunday Brunch!! Everyone loves it and there is something there that appeals to all. "

  • "Had a 0945 reservation for Easter Brunch as a Single. At the front desk as I was being checked in, a couple just arrived and told the checking person tha they were told if they hurried over to the restaurant they would be able to seat them at that time. I was led to an all empty 10 seat stool at the bar for my seat without any conversation and with open tables around the room. The above mentioned couple was led to a table in the same area. I protested and was then led to a table while being told I had to be finished in an hour and a half, which was not really a concern to me, it hardly takes that length of time for a single to eat a Buffett,"

  • "The filet mignon was outstanding. My wife's t-bone steak was good too. They initially mixed up the temperatures of our steaks and got them backwards but were quick to remedy the situation. The sides were just so-so however. The potatoes were lumpy and the vegetables bland, though fresh. Also, most tables are next to windows which are pretty chilly during the winter, so bring a sweater."

  • "My wife and I went the day after Valentines to avoid the crowd. They were flexible with our reservations when I missed the original time. We were seated and served immediately. The ambiance was richly Alaska, slightly festive and the noise level noticeable but not distracting. (Don't sit too close to the door without insulated pants.) The drinks came in a timely fashion and the lemonade was excellent. Then came a scallop appetizer and salads. The salad was fresh and tasteful. The steaks were good and cooked to order. The potatoes had a sweetness on them that we didn't care for. Then a large group came in and it took awhile to get our desserts and check to pay. But the wait was relaxing. I plan to try different times and explore their menu."

  • "Quality and price are good for a Fairbanks restaurant. In a less remote town, it would probably be considered mediocre and overpriced. They seem to do best with steaks, they tend to overcook fish and the gnocchi was pretty chewy. Good thing no one goes to Fairbanks for for fine dining."

  • "I went for Valenties day and it was beyond my expectations. The service was fantastic and welcoming, the overall ambiance of the establishment was woodsy but cozy, a jewel up here in the frozen north. As a southerner, I'd place their steak towards to upper part of my list, but I've had world class BBQ before so it's not fair to compare. Honestly, it's great and worth going to by yourself, in a group or just as a date night with that special someone."

  • "We love the new appetizer- ahi tuna sashimi! can't wait to try the other new ones!! the ribeye was not seasoned, rice was plain, and looks as the mashed potatoes was thrown on the plate on Valentine's day, otherwise, great service as usual! Thanks for the flower!"

  • "The Pump House is a regular stop for me. They have an excellent dinner menu and great bar menu as well. Even though it was NYE and the restaurant was crowded, the service, drinks and food were great as always. The bagpipe band was a nice touch."

  • "We went to the Christmas Buffet and had a great time. The food was delicious and the service was great. They were helpful and courteous. I really enjoy going to this restaurant for special occasions and for nights I just can't make dinner for the family. I definitely plan on making this my annual tradition of Christmas at Pump House!"

  • "The Thanksgiving buffet at the Pump House is becoming a family tradition. The food is traditional with an Alaskan twist; it is plentiful, frequently replenished, and well prepared. The reservation system works to keep the lines moving smoothly, and the servers are attentive without being annoying. Singles to largish family/friend groups are smoothly accommodated. This year, the two "new" items that we thoroughly enjoyed were the seafood salad (looked like cold slaw, but was chock full of a wonderful variety of fresh seafood) and the apricot/chocolate cheesecake. We were delighted to note that there's going to be a Christmas Day dinner buffet this year, too!"
