Diner Reviews
  • "Having eaten at the Pit in Raleigh---was expecting same greatness--it was all just good-nothing was great! Convenient for Motoroco--so we might eat there again--but would not consider it a destination"

  • "Had a reservation but still had to wait 20 minutes for a table because it was so busy! Menu was a little confusing so we had our waitress explain it. Very well priced for how much food you get. We were able to share and still was full. Had three choices for sauce which was cool. Fried green tomatoes were tasty. I can see why it was so popular. "

  • "Brought friends from out of state. Food was outstanding and the service, exceptional. Waiter appeared whenever we needed something but otherwise stayed in the background. Would recommend to anyone interested on good BBQ (Eastern or Western)."

  • "The pulled pork is fantastic and the bourbon list is very good. They need to make their valet parking sign more visible; parking is a premium. Also, it would help if they would say that hush puppies (very good) come with the meal."

  • "The Pit was a great place to meet out-of-town guests to show them a different part of Durham while they enjoyed fantastic pork! Very fun."

  • "We ordered the baby backs on the waitress recommendation and then after 10 minutes, the waitress came to the table and said they were out and it would be 30 minutes before any more were ready. I know that BBQ places, especially good ones, run out of the best stuff. But they should know sooner. And the french fries were cold on the plate when they came to the table. Something that should not happen at an established restaurant."

  • "The food was fantastic and delicious. Our server was very attentive and on point with everything. I wish I could remember his name, because I'd like to give him a shout out. Thanks for everything Pit BBQ. I look forward to coming back and enjoying the dining experience all over again."

  • "The Pit gives barbecue a refinement without taking out it's soul. The setting is great and you get valet parking and online reservations, but you get the cozy community feel of long wooden tables. It's a little loud in there but you are sharing an experience of trying the different meats and sides together. We loved the ribs, the pork, the macaroni and cheese, and the pumpkin cornbread and smoked wings. Try many different things, you will be happy!"

  • "Great, friendly service, but the food wasn't as good as I had hoped. The appetizers were fine but the mains were average. NB- This was our family's first visit to Durham. We consistently found that the bread basket and appetizers were great, but the entrees left something to be desired."

  • "Excellent customer service. Excellent beef short rib, tender, smoked"

  • "Great time at the Pit. Food was prepared perfectly. Where was the HOT sauce? Our waitress was super. Parking an issue, but glad valet service was available. What a fun little section of town!"

  • "Made a dinner reservation for two for my close friend's birthday; it ended up being the perfect setting for a relaxed but nice celebratory dinner. I am a health-conscious BBQ fan, and I was pleasantly surprised at how well The Pit can cater to both of those mindsets. Options like the lean turkey BBQ, large salads, & tofu dinner plate can satisfy even the heathiest of health nuts, and plenty of hush puppies, slaw, and ribs for those ready to let loose. Between the two of us we had turkey bbq (to sauce as you like), mac 'n cheese, brunswick stew, creamed corn, and a huuuuuge piece of cake at the end of the night. The wait staff was friendly, extremely attentive to our needs, and we were seated immediately on arrival. Can't wait to go back!"

  • "I have eaten here 2 times this week! Had lunch a few days earlier with some colleagues and then took my wife there for a date night. The pulled pork is cooked just right and it appears to be actually hand pulled (longer strands). You do have to add your own sauce of choice but they have 3 excellent sauces at the table. Brisket was nice and tender and yummy also. I've been in NC for almost 30 years now and have had a lot of BBQ from a lot of places and already this is one of my favorites. It's a little more expensive than most places but the ambiance is nice enough for a special night out. Also had some BBQ chicken which had a wonderful smokey flavor in the meat and was very tender. And the Banana pudding is just like grandma made."

  • "I enjoyed sharing a meal with my friend to celebrate our birthdays. We loved the cabbage collards and pulled pork and the beer hit the spot! So a lovely night out!"

  • "The food was great! From the deviled eggs, eastern chopped bbq to the pecan pie!!. Service was excellent! We did reservations and highly recommend it or your wait time will be awhile."

  • "The staff was very polite, they checked in with our table of 6 at the perfect frequency. They also did the 'above and beyond', which I was very impressed with. The host came around to bring out the appetizers and I asked if it was possible to have a sparkling water (yes, burping helps with BBQ). They did not have any at the bar, I said that was perfectly fine, I'll just take a water. 5 minutes later the host comes over with a sparkling water that he ran across the street for at the local convenience store. It is that kind of service that will always have me going back. It was reassuring to have a great dining experience after some very poor ones at places I choose not to trash on this review. Great place for a group to eat!"

  • "All the food was very high quality and well prepared. Unfortunately I am a BBQ snob and the meats did not have enough smoke for my taste. Bread, sides of potato salad, collards, and red slaw very good. Nice selection of sauces as well."

  • "The pork and turkey BBQ were both very tasty. I did not enjoy the appetizers -- sampler platter of fried green tomatoes (bland flavor), bruschetta (mostly onions, pimiento cheese/bacon biscuits (very dry). chicken wings. But we went there for the Q and it was awesome! And the drink specials were tasty. I tried the Smoky Manhattan -- love a good Manhattan. I'll definitely go again -- next time I'll skip the appetizers. Our waitress was great -- very attentive and knowledgeable."

  • "All the food was great! The fried okra was a special treat. Few places do it well. The brisket was the best I've eaten - very tender. The complimentary valet parking was an added plus. My only complaint - no dessert! Let's see some cobbler on that menu."

  • "The Pit Durham has most of the same excellent menu items as the Pit Raleigh. The atmosphere is relaxed, the food is superb, and the bar has a great mix of options - you can't go wrong!"

  • "This was our 3rd or 4th trip to The Pit in Durham and we continue to be impressed. We had a larger group (6, including 2 kids) and this was the first time we tried ordering family style which worked perfectly for us. The menu options are terrific, we try something new to go with our every-visit standby chicken wings, and the kids love their mac-n-cheese. Our server this trip was outstanding - smiling, energetic and attentive. Couldn't ask for a better experience or a way to show off 2770F to out of towners from Charleston, SC!"

  • "A group of 5 had an early dinner before going to DPAC last weekend. There was a good crowd for the early dinner time and It was a bit noisy as usual. They were out of Lexington "outside brown," which we did not know until we were ready to place our orders, so 4 of us had to take additional time to choose another meat. One diner ordered coffee when the beverages were ordered and didn't get it until we had finished eating---but they did not charge us for it as it was so late. We will certainly return."

  • "I had high hopes and was craving BBQ, so we thought we'd try out the durham location. The food was mediocre at best and the service was poor. I had heard that ED Mitchell, the original pit master, was no longer affiliated and it shows in the food. We had to wait at least fifteen minutes for the check and our dirty plates were only cleared as we were leaving. Overall, it was very disappointing. I hope the Raleigh location has not deteriorated as well."

  • "We love the Pit in Raleigh so we decided to give the Durham location a try. They serve top notch BBQ, especially the chopped pork and chicken. My vegetarian friends also really enjoyed the BBQ Tofu. The Cornbread, BBQ beans, and Brunswick stew are also standouts."

  • "We had eaten at the Raleigh spot and loved it, but it was quite a drive from southwestern Durham. We were out of town when this location opened so when I browsed Open Table for a dinner spot and this one came up, I was initially surprised, then super excited! Their food is just ridiculously, incredibly scrumptious! Our server even suggested that we order smaller portions because they were more economical, but we were planning to take home doggie bags. One cool plus: we felt a little guilty about splurging without the kids and were planning to bring home dessert for them. Well, a sweet teen girl was celebrating her birthday and had extra cupcakes so she went around the restaurant giving them away. We grabbed two for the kids - score!"

  • "We were very excited to finally try The Pit's Durham location. While it lacks the ambience of an old, established barbecue joint, you can't argue that it hurts to have a restaurant that serves great food in a comfortable dining environment, The barbecue was excellent, the ribs were exceptional, and the sides were very good too. The vegetarians in our group said it was some of the best barbecue tofu they've ever had, We'll be back."

  • "The grilled chicken wings were excellent. Mac and cheese very good. Mash potatoes were real and tasty. Brisket was very good. Beef ribs were ok I would prefer bone in though. Biscuits and hush puppies were very good"

  • "Food is great. Banana pudding is awesome! Get there early - they run out of some BBQ options as the night goes on."

  • "We had reservations and sat right down (Saturday night). The waiter did not introduce himself as it seemed like he was only filling water glasses and taking drink orders. The next time we saw him he asked for our order....no introductions, no asking if we had dined with them before, etc. Seemed very rushed and almost like a factory of sorts..... The food took almost an hour to arrive. The food was delicious with the exception of the "outter BBQ." I am surprised they let it out of the kitchen bc it was inedible. The fat on the meat was so dense and tough that we had to send it back. The waiter handled it very well and we asked for the turkey bbq instead and he proceeded to bring up chopped pork BBQ. Food was delicious, however!"

  • "Things may get louder as the evening wears on, but it was OK while we were there. Middle school kids found plenty to like. Decent local beer selection. Short ribs were very moist and tender, fried chicken also still moist on the inside. Pulled pork a little dry, but still very good flavor. Added one of the tabletop sauces made it even better. Jowl bacon bruschetta was very tasty - could have made a meal of just that. Will definitely be going back."

  • "Had heard great things about The Pit in Raleigh and was so excited they opening in Durham. Have to say we weren't impressed. Lukewarm hushpuppies - arrrgghh! Don't like the sharing option either - would rather order what I want and not have to make a group decision about dinner. Very disappointed."

  • "After two trips to this restaurant, we will be back again! I love the plates for sharing and the dishes are fantastic. We have had the sliced and chopped Eastern Style BBQ, BBQ chicken, and catfish. The sides we have tasted include potato salad, baked beans, sweet potato fries, and the fried okra. The food has been seasoned very well and is not a disappointment. The kids menu is usual, so when you bring your kids, there will be something there they will like as well."

  • "We took guests there who were visiting from NYC and had an amazing meal. Favorites were the sweet potato cornbread, ribs, and the brisket. Awesome location as well....we had a beer at the next door brewery before dinner and then coffee at the coffee shop open around the corner. We will be back!"
