Diner Reviews
  • "Recently, I have become a little jaded working my way through Allison Cook's Top 100 list. A lot of good restaurants, but very few that knock the dining experience out of the ballpark. Our visit to The Pass on April 19, 2014, re-energized my love for a fabulous dining experience. The restaurant experience is completely focused on the food -- from the minimalist decor to the white serving dishes. Each course was a work of art -- thoughtful and inspiring and different. There are times when nothing, but good ol' comfort food will do, but The Pass is for those times when you need brain candy and surprising experience for your palate. "

  • "While the service was impeccable, the food tried too hard at times. And there was a bit too much of an Asian influence which wasn't what we thought we'd get based off all the major media reviews (as well as Yelp). A little too much salt in at least half the courses. The service was extraordinary -- perhaps the best I've ever experienced and I've eaten at top restaurants all over the world. Non invasive, but friendly in a charming, gentle and kindly way. I'd like to go back sometime during the winter months and see how the menu would be changed. The Asian influence may have had to do with the near-Easter/Spring time of year."

  • "Definitely worth trying, but if you're looking for the absolute best tasting menu in town, it's gotta be Mark's or Kiran's. The white painted brick walls wasn't my style and the wife specifically said it was not a romantic venue. Expect detailed descriptions of each dish and wine [we both did the wine pairing, celebrating our anniversary] from a very knowledgeable, non-snooty staff. The pastry chef at The Pass knocks it out of the park. I agree with some of the other non-five-star reviews. Many of the components/techniques are unnecessary and seem to be the work of a very ambitious, talented, experimenting young chef. The trouble is coherency is not always present. Will most likely go back, but it will probably be a while."

  • "Had a lovely meal at The Pass but we all found the portions rather small. My son and husband were still hungry after the 5 course tasting menu."

  • "I was excited about going to The Pass. It fulfilled all of my expectations. The atmosphere is just right and the views of the open kitchen added to the experience. The most impressive element was the food and the food pairings. I took the 8 course dinner with wine pairings. It turned out to be a wonderful experience. The food was excellent, surprising, delicate at times and robust at others. My favorites on the day: smoked trout: a perfect blend of flavors and textures each adding to make the whole dish, wonderfully paired with a Sicilian Frappato. Other dishes to remember: Onion, Asparagus and notably the Ricotta with the pairing of the Moscato Chinato. This was superb. I will go back."

  • "From the moment we walked through the dramatic entry until the moment we left, we received the highest level of service. Every detail was considered. And the food...amazing! From presentation to taste to texture to color....although we hate to betray our beloved Austin restaurants, this was the best food we've ever had. I will be traveling down from Austin regularly to eat at this gem."

  • "Cannot recommend The Pass enough, wonderful experience with amazing food. My favorite part of the experience was the fact that our waiter (don't remember his name but he was the only male wait staff working on 4/9) tailored his service to us. What I mean by that is my wife and I love good food but we do not like the sometimes pretentious feel of a high class restaurant; our waiter toned it down to make us more comfortable which I loved."

  • "This is our third time to eat at the Pass and each time has been stellar. It is a wonderful dining experience."

  • "We were celebrating our daughters birthday and the experience was over the top. My wife and I have dined at the French Laundry a couple of times and this experience, food wise, was a close 2nd. Everyone at the table did the 8 courses and although some of the food descriptions sounded like something I would never try..they all were enjoyable. We had a great time and noticed, we were there almost 4 hours and it was so relaxed and fun. The service was outstanding and the care and unique food and presentation of the food made it fun. One of the most memorable experiences I have had. I highly recommended this restaurant..you will enjoy it."

  • "The innovative creations were all cutting edge. The incredible mixture of flavors/textures were a delight. Wish they could expand the wine list to match the fabulous presentations and food."

  • "The Pass is an unforgettable experience. My son and I dined at The Pass as we both are complete foodies and are always looking for the best. The recommend 2 hrs for the experience, it took more like 3.5 hrs, and it was well worth it. The food was incredible, the drinks were amazing, and our waitress was awesome. The manager brought out some liqueurs, after dinner, that were quite nice. I took pics of all 9 courses and posted them all on Facebook. I highly recommend The Pass to anyone who truly desires temptation to the palate. The chefs really know how to coax the best flavors out of truly fresh food in a delightful and playful manner. The drinks paired with each course enhanced the food to a great degree. Please enjoy."

  • "While the food was excellent, I found there was too little time between the courses to relish the overall experience. I would have added an extra 5 mins between each course for time to discuss the intricacies of the menu.."

  • "1) great bar & great cocktail options - but this is completely missing from the online info 2) food was fab up until dessert-petit fores lovely, but sweets/cheese were very very bad (tasing menu 8), came away with a mixed view.3) austere setting works;cool location 4) service exceptional- sommelier to wait staff to folks who 'explained' the courses 5)hurried us from bar2table, given not full i found this odd 4 upscale restaurant 6) weird wine menu-very few champagnes/sparkers; a page & half of whites; very few reds-weird. Overall my husband & son want to go back; my daughter & I were kind of on the fence. We enjoyed the environment/creativity of the dishes (up until sweets/cheese course) tremendously & in the end likely will return."

  • "The Pass was merely OK overall. Service was very good, but our waitress was running all over the place and it proved to be distracting. On the food, I would wait until they change the menu before thinking of going again. Some of the dishes were outstanding, like the Lamb and the Foie Gras, while others were delicious but too big of a portion like the Mushroom Bread, it became overwhelming after a couple of bites. The bone marrow agadashi was way too salty for my taste. The potato was very good but too small of a portion. The Bayley Hazen was a good idea, but the execution was not very good, it was difficult to combine the flavors. The desert was I have to say, disastrous. Too simplistic, and way too big. I do not recommend this menu."

  • "Perfect spot for a foodie experience or a special night out. Attentive and informed service. Come with an appetite; the portions may be small, but you are eating 5-8 courses. The menu rotates, but the Marrow consomme was amazing, and the lamb course was cooked to absolute perfection."

  • "I have eaten her twice and both times have done the 8 course menu. As with any tasting menu there are always hits and misses but it is always a fun experience and all the dishes are well presented. I recommend going with the wine pairings, they are all nice quality pours and introduce you to some that you might not know of otherwise. At $160 a person for the 8 course menu with wine, it is obviously not cheap, but still seems like a good value and perfectly reasonable given the quality of the food, wines, and ambience."

  • "This is my 5th time at The Pass and also my least favorite menu. It's still good, just didn't tingle my taste buds like it did the previous times. I'm hoping the Spring menu will be better than this Winter one."

  • "I had pretty high expectations coming in to The Pass, and was pleasantly surprised. The food was delicious, meticulous, and the servers both knowledgeable and cheerful. As a tasting menu junkie who's been through several other major foodie cities, I'm thrilled to find this so close to home."

  • "The Pass is a lace to go if you want to spend the whole evening dinning. The perfect 8 course fixed menu paired with uniquely complimenting wines provides 4 hours wonderful dinning pleasure. Each course is sufficiently sized to provide the complete flavor and quality of what is served without making one feel they ate too much at the end of the night. The staff was extremely knowledgeable about every food course and wine pairing served. However, the service was a bit sluggish with two food courses being served before the wine pairing and empty plates and glasses occasionally staying on the table too long. Despite that shortcoming, The Pass is definitely a dinning destination to which I will return often."

  • "Went for as special occasion. Was pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere, but service towards the end of our dinner was less than expected. Also, the pre-dinner cocktails were not properly explained to us. Neither the preferred scotch nor gin were available. After substantial discussion with the wait staff, it was finally resolved. Overall, the quality of the meals were good, but the overall time for service was a little too long. Started at 7:30, ended at 11:00 pm"

  • "This is one of my all time tops in terms of the whole experience. A group of three ladies did the 8 course tasting menu and pairing and we had more than enough to eat as the portions were quite nice. The pairings were spot on and the waitstaff was very attentive. They expertly discussed each dish and wine and we never were with an empty water glass. The desert petit fours were so neat and presented well on the roving cart."

  • "This was a delicious meal enhanced by a knowledgable staff. Every person that came to our table was able to answer questions. The service was attentive without being intrusive."

  • "Amazing food. go in with an open mind because you will be challenged with foods you haven't eaten before, and certainly not in the way the chefs prepare them. The creativity, attention to detail, and respect for the ingredients is unparalleled."

  • "We traveled from Austin to dine at The Pass... with high expectations! What a disappointment. We had the 8 course tasting menu and found the courses to be lacking in just plain good taste. Many of the dishes had the same textures, but lacked in any WOW... where we said Boy, that was good. We kept hoping the next course would be the one that would draw us in, but unfortunately it never happened. We've eaten all over the country and based on the write-ups and publications were hoping for a much better experience. Maybe it was just an off night and I would suggest waiting for the next menu change before trying, because it is, an expensive evening."

  • "Excellent food and service. Great for a special occasion, I recomend the people to check the menu online before the dinner, because its a fixed menu that changes by the season."

  • "Incredible presentation and very unique preparations. Intimate setting with impeccable service. Servers were warm, informative, and on point. Not my all time favorite, in the way of multi layer and outside the box tasting menu, but still an incredible experience"

  • "This meal was excellent. My wife and I each had the 8 course meal and shared a wine and bar pairing. Everything about this dinner was fantastic. Just make sure you understand how the Pass works before you show up - I can imagine there are some people who would be expecting a different style of dinner and would not appreciate what they received."

  • "You can't find food cooked with so much care anywhere else in houston. Not the biggest fan of all the plates but sure was interested and tried everything! You are literally sitting in the kitchen! Experience unlike any other."

  • "The service and ambiance were nice but the food was underwhelming. And for the price, i couldnt find much that would make me want to consider coming back. That being said, im not a super sophisticated foodie. I liken this place to abstract art - dont understand it nor why you would pay to get it."

  • "We've done prix-fixe tasting courses before at various restaurants around the country. While not on the level of some restaurants in Chicago or Napa, The Pass was a wonderful experience for people who enjoy food and drink, and more importantly, talking about the food you just ate. The wait staff were enthusiastic about what they were serving and were happy to answer questions. The food itself was not particularly adventurous, but certainly tasty. Each dish did manage to serve up some surprise, though, which kept us anticipating the next dish. The restaurant decor is tasteful and upscale without being overwrought or stuffy. We'd be happy to go back once the menu changes over to the spring one. Thanks for a nice evening!"

  • "Was a great dinner experience was perfect place to Celebrate our 30th Wedding Anniversary. The make you feel like a VIP the minute you walk to your table. It is like you the only there and you are at the Chief Table. If you go make sure you do the wine paring."

  • "Such a wonderful experience. My entire table did an eight course tasting with wine pairings and it was amazing. Each dish was well thought out with its pairing. Service was on point and anything and everything we wanted was delivered. This was such a great adventure."

  • "The food and service was excellent, but it was the most expensive dining experience I have ever had for two people. I choose the tasting with spirts and my wife chose hers with wine ($500+). Could not justify the price, that is why I did not give it five stars. You can enjoy the same style of cooking at Provisions with drinks for a fraction of the cost of The Pass. But for special occasions and/or price is not a concern, then by all means it is definitely worth a try."

  • "I love the concept of The Pass. A shared kitchen and building but two different restaurants. When arriving you are guided through an invisible door to a monochromatic and elegant room, the end of which is the joint kitchen. The only option is a tasting menu, and while at first glance, a few ingredients may be off putting, (I'm not a huge urchin or bone marrow fan), the result was an amazing dish I'd go back for any night. Everything we ate on the night we went was beyond delicious and very inventive. I'm looking forward to going back to try the other half, at Provisions."

  • "If you can't go to Alinea in Chicago, go to The Pass in Houston (it's 60% of the experience). Hopefully, the future of dining has arrived and will endure. Support this restaurant because Houston needs world-class food."

  • "Dinner at the Pass was easily one of the best dining experiences of my life. However, you really need to have an open mind going in. The tasting menu only hints at what you will get, so you have to be prepared for just about anything. If you're willing to put your trust in the chef, I can guarantee you that the Pass will not disappoint."

  • "This is a very special place with creative dishes and excellent, knowledgeable service, perhaps the best we've had in Houston. We had the 8 course menu, one member of the party had the vegetarian menu. Presentations and portions excellent! Can not wait to eat there again."
