Tucked away in the heart of Mount Washington, The Nickel Taphouse offers a modern take on the traditional tavern food that owner Robbin Haas grew up eating in his native Buffalo, New York.

  • "We heard this place was GREAT, but we went for lunch on a Saturday, and I have to say it was average at best. The food is fine, but overpriced. The fries were very good actually, but seriously, $8.50? For fries? And an inadequate little thimble of the aioli dipping sauce. The burgers were okay, but one of them came out of the kitchen without its cheese, and when he brought it back to the kitchen they sent him out to tell us that there was cheese on it, but it disappears when it melts. Really? Magic disappearing cheese? C'mon. The kale salad was fine, but again, for $15.00 and all the show of making it tableside, it was pretty boring. Maybe if you eat oysters and drink beer this is the place for you. I'll stick with Bierretcca."

  • "Didn't let our dinner the night before deter us from coming back with a different family member...this time it was SPOT ON! All the food was great, service was attentive and upbeat, and everything went swimmingly! Glad we aren't deterred easily. Well done!!"

The Nightly Meal was dry and bland...sent it back and were happy with the always-go-to Beef on Weck. Rest of the meal was good also. Guess you have to have one mediocre experience everywhere once in a while."

  • "First time at this neighborhood place. Very attractive and the food was good but we waited for everything we ordered. Fifteen minutes or so for our first drink, 25 minutes for our second drink, a half hour for our oysters etc. The waitress was pleasant but seemed to be overwhelmed. Badly in need of sound baffles too."

  • "Enjoyed hand-crafted cocktails, prepared with care. Had a great version of blue cheese-bacon-tomato-iceburg, prepared table-side, as apparently all their salads are prepared, but were only informed of this upon ordering- a really nice treatment that our unenthusiastic server overlooked. Each of our sandwiches that followed were also great- highest quality ingredients, served perfectly, but without much of a welcoming attitude. Overall, great food, but served by people who would rather be somewhere else."

  • "This restaurant is amazing. The service was impeccable, knowledgable and honest. I ordered something and forgot to ask what the sauce was and when it came and I couldn't eat it fixed it right up. Drinks were superb and oysters were wonderful. The burgers are amazing too!!"

  • "We had been here a couple of times and the service had been good, but it was pretty bad this time. Took forever to get our drinks. When the food was brought out, the waiter never came back to check on us, unfortunate because my meal had been forgotten (party of 6). One of my party went and told them. So when I got my 'works' burger, it was more well done than my medium rare order, and came without the fried egg, which another in our party had ordered it that way."

  • "I have to say I saw the other reviews and I have to say it was an awesome experience. The Owner greeted us at the door and thanked us for coming. It was a Saturday night we were seated right away. Our waiter was very attentive!! We had the mussels which were good would have liked more that is my only dislike of the whole evening. We actually had burgers which I normally don't do but I'm glad I did it was wonderful. Great flavor the bun was not too overpowering. My date like his burger too. I really liked the atmosphere. The Key Lime Pie is to die for!!! Overall really liked it. Look forward to going again!!!!!"

  • "We enjoyed delicious beet soup and veggie burgers along with a beer at this neighborhood bar with an eclectic menu that includes plenty of meat and seafood as well. There is something for everyone here. Our server was most accommodating although he disapearred a few times during the evening and others had to step in. Nevertheless, it was a delightful evening and we'll be back."

  • "Once again the Taphouse did not disappoint. Great service, good food, boisterous. The Thai mussels are simply the best that can be. Very sorry they revised the menu and took their superlative catfish off the menu, but then again it is not a "Chesapeake Bay" type of entree. They now have daily specials."

  • " Our food was mediocre. We had 2 sushi appetizers, the tuna tartare and the salmon. Both were fine, average, but the salmon was very skimpy! Just 4 small slices. I had a BLT. The server said that they made their own bacon, and I found it low on taste and very tough and hard to eat. It didn't crunch at all and was just chewy. My dining partner had a burger which was also just OK. The high point of the food was the excellent fries. Our server messed up our order and the dinner came before we ever got our appetizers. We sent that back and the manager came over to apologize which was nice. The setting is lively but very loud."

  • "A buddy had a discount voucher, and suggested this. It was my first time. It's a pleasant, comfortable space, but LOUD. No romance here. The waiter knew the menu, the drinks and beer list thoroughly, and the food was terrific. I had a steak salad with gorgonzola and it was perfectly done. My friend's quinoa salad got great reviews. And, they introduced me to the best vodka drink ever - Deep Eddy's Grapefruit."

  • "We were here in a group of 6 for a work celebration. Beer selection was outstanding. Menu was eclectic - something for everyone. Kids in the crowd seemed happy. Appetizers: Brussel sprouts were spicy and tasty but not crisp as advertised. Likewise, green beans were not so crispy and more like a side than appetizer. Deviled eggs were light; everyone liked one they weren't addictive. The fries could be addictive, however! Burgers were well liked. Salads were very large and generous - mixed tableside so you could ask for +/- dressing - a nice touch. Servers were very pleasant; some were in training. Food took a while but the place was full. Acoustics are difficult; all the surfaces are hard, so sound builds up even at side tables."

  • "I plan to give the tap house another try, but my first impression was not a great one. The service was not particularly knowledgeable or attentive. There didn't seem to be a visible manager to address (there seemed to be a main server who was dressed like the others who dealt with our problems, but if he was a manager, it was hard to tell). One of our dishes was completely forgotten (it was taken off our check after we asked where it was about 45 minutes into the meal). The food was fine - the tartare was lovely and the burger was perfectly cooked. Unfortunately, for a restaurant that calls itself an oyster bar, the fresh and roasted oysters were very poorly cleaned - I got huge chunks of shell in both rounds, and a LOT of grit. :("

  • "I've eaten here a few times over the last few months. I think both the service and food get better every time. The servers are genuinely nice, but there is a laid-back style that has resulted in inconsistent service for us. We love the simple hamburgers (although would be even better if they toasted the buns with a little butter). The French fries (with a flavorful tarragon dipping sauce) are crispy, yummy skinny style. Their French onion soup is delicious. For desert, the key lime pie and strawberry shortcake "tort" are good. The crust in the tort is a little too hard, though. I'm really rooting for the Nickel to succeed. The only other neighborhood option is Mt Washington tavern, which has truly awful service and food."

  • "Recent lunch- limited menu options with some items not available (we are out of our kale salad etc...) Had an overpriced dry turkey burger accompanied by tasteless coleslaw. Companion had chopped salad that looked like something from a low tier supermarket salad bar. Really disappointed in this experience. Too many other places that provide better service, broader lunch offerings, larger portions and fresher ingredients at more reasonable prices. It's a shame as this is a nice space with a staff that tries- but overall misses the mark."

The atmosphere is fun and lively, but not too loud for a couple's night out. Definitely a great addition to the area, especially if you don't feel like going "all the way" downtown for a hip place!"

  • "Great food, but prices are a little high for what you get. Beef on weck sandwich was great, but wish the sandwiches came with fries instead of having to purchase them as an additional side. Beer selection very good, but high prices ($6-8 per pint). Basically you're going to get good food and service, but expect to pay a little bit more for the trendiness factor. Would return again for a special occasion."

  • "The Nickel Tap House is a fabulous addition to the Baltimore restaurant scene. Their food is just VERY GOOD! Their mussels are plumpy and juicy, the fries are perfect and their burgers very satisfying. Their beer selection is broad and intriguing. The staff are friendly and attentive, but what gets us to go back over and over again (in spite of the quite noisy environment) is simply the high quality of the food. A must try!"

  • "We got home after a week away and the last thing we wanted to do was cook - plus we had nothing in the house! We were glad to get a table at the Taphouse. Food is a bit pricey - I wish fries or something came with the burgers, because a side order of fries is really more than I can handle these days - but it's good. I'm nervous about when we build our house and are walking distance from the Taphouse - we might be there all the time!"

  • "This new dining spot has a limited menu, that I am told will change with the seasons. It is advertised as an oyster venue, but oysters were small at this time, so my husband didn't order them. He did however, order the French onion soup, which he liked. The chef salad was okay, and he enjoyed his natty boh beer. I thought my curry carrot soup was okay, but didn't really care for the chopped wedge salad. Not as flavorful as I had hoped it would be. We will return on another evening to try a few different choices from the menu. I hope Nickel Taphouse will work out as a new spot in the neighborhood."

  • "Prices on the oysters and beer were quite high. Nice selection on the oysters -- both raw and cooked. Beer selection was outstanding, one of the best I have seen in Baltimore. The service was efficient and very friendly. The food, much of it modeled on Buffalo tavern food, was okay but not much different really from your average tavern food. They seem genuinely interested in suggestions for improvement. We will definitely support this place and return. It's best days are yet to come."

  • "This was our fifth visit to the restaurant. We really love the atmosphere, the food and the drinks. But the service has been consistently awful. We waited quite a while for our first drink order. After ordering a second round of drinks, only one showed up. After waiting several more minutes,had to track down our waitress by going up to the bar. Only one of the three orders of fries we ordered showed up with our meal.The others seemed to have been forgotten. Had to track down the waitress once again and continued to wait. Our meal was more than half way over and cold when the fries finally arrived.We had 6:30 reservations on a Tuesday evening.The restaurant was not full at all.Unfortunately, the service really made our visit uncomfortable. "

That's a bit steep, and they brought our entrees out before the salads. This seems to be happening more and more at restaurants, and I just don't get it. It's called a first course for a reason!"

  • "I like the booths..........entree-sized salads were GREEEEEEEEEEEAT. So glad for those. Keep it up. Also glad they were able to accommodate me since I am vegan. My non-vegan friend thought it would be nice if there were an option to add protein. Really liked the spiced chickpeas and the nuts. I often assemble my meal from sides and appetizers so was glad they had some vegetable sides that all looked very tasty. The dessert menu looked sort of "meh" but maybe we just weren't in the mood. Service was good. "
