A word from The Nickel Taphouse
Tucked away in the heart of Mount Washington, The Nickel Taphouse offers a modern take on the traditional tavern food that owner Robbin Haas grew up eating in his native Buffalo, New York.
With a focus on locally sourced and sustainable ingredients, our kitchen prepares signature dishes, such as the Beef on Weck and our Roasted Oysters, along with a wide array of entrees, salads, mussels, and a raw bar, to ensure that everyone in your party will find something to enjoy.
The menu is complimented by 32 different craft brews on tap, an extensive selection of craft spirits and cocktails, and a diverse wine list.

Diner Reviews
  • "Service was terrible. Friendly but terrible. Burgers were good but not great. Sigh."

  • "Much too noisy for dinner..it's a shame because the good is great and it's right in my neighborhood"

  • "A buddy had a discount voucher, and suggested this. It was my first time. It's a pleasant, comfortable space, but LOUD. No romance here. The waiter knew the menu, the drinks and beer list thoroughly, and the food was terrific. I had a steak salad with gorgonzola and it was perfectly done. My friend's quinoa salad got great reviews. And, they introduced me to the best vodka drink ever - Deep Eddy's Grapefruit."

  • "very little on your menu for lactose intolerant people. I had to skip 2 entrees I wanted and settled for a 3rd choice. It was good, but not my first choice."

  • "Nice atmosphere. Good place to grab a beer (great selection) and a burger or some apps. Wouldn't recommend for dinner if you're looking for more. Limited, overpriced menu. Host was gracious about re-seating us in a quieter spot, and server was good."

  • "Excellent neighborhood restaurant with very good food. Excellent beer and wine list. Great service.Very accomodating and can sample as many beers as you like. Great desserts also."

  • "We were here in a group of 6 for a work celebration. Beer selection was outstanding. Menu was eclectic - something for everyone. Kids in the crowd seemed happy. Appetizers: Brussel sprouts were spicy and tasty but not crisp as advertised. Likewise, green beans were not so crispy and more like a side than appetizer. Deviled eggs were light; everyone liked one they weren't addictive. The fries could be addictive, however! Burgers were well liked. Salads were very large and generous - mixed tableside so you could ask for +/- dressing - a nice touch. Servers were very pleasant; some were in training. Food took a while but the place was full. Acoustics are difficult; all the surfaces are hard, so sound builds up even at side tables."

  • "I plan to give the tap house another try, but my first impression was not a great one. The service was not particularly knowledgeable or attentive. There didn't seem to be a visible manager to address (there seemed to be a main server who was dressed like the others who dealt with our problems, but if he was a manager, it was hard to tell). One of our dishes was completely forgotten (it was taken off our check after we asked where it was about 45 minutes into the meal). The food was fine - the tartare was lovely and the burger was perfectly cooked. Unfortunately, for a restaurant that calls itself an oyster bar, the fresh and roasted oysters were very poorly cleaned - I got huge chunks of shell in both rounds, and a LOT of grit. :("

  • "I've eaten here a few times over the last few months. I think both the service and food get better every time. The servers are genuinely nice, but there is a laid-back style that has resulted in inconsistent service for us. We love the simple hamburgers (although would be even better if they toasted the buns with a little butter). The French fries (with a flavorful tarragon dipping sauce) are crispy, yummy skinny style. Their French onion soup is delicious. For desert, the key lime pie and strawberry shortcake "tort" are good. The crust in the tort is a little too hard, though. I'm really rooting for the Nickel to succeed. The only other neighborhood option is Mt Washington tavern, which has truly awful service and food."

  • "Recent lunch- limited menu options with some items not available (we are out of our kale salad etc...) Had an overpriced dry turkey burger accompanied by tasteless coleslaw. Companion had chopped salad that looked like something from a low tier supermarket salad bar. Really disappointed in this experience. Too many other places that provide better service, broader lunch offerings, larger portions and fresher ingredients at more reasonable prices. It's a shame as this is a nice space with a staff that tries- but overall misses the mark."

  • "This was our second time at the Nickel Tap House and everything was great ... the food, the service, the atmosphere and of course the beer. The atmosphere is fun and lively, but not too loud for a couple's night out. Definitely a great addition to the area, especially if you don't feel like going "all the way" downtown for a hip place!"

  • "NOISY is. This place is,for good or bad, always loud. Even a little over the top screaming. Imagine "children" getting drunk. What happened to our inside voices?"

  • "It was a pleasant Saturday evening. Good beer selection. Mussels with fries was excellent."

  • "Great food, but prices are a little high for what you get. Beef on weck sandwich was great, but wish the sandwiches came with fries instead of having to purchase them as an additional side. Beer selection very good, but high prices ($6-8 per pint). Basically you're going to get good food and service, but expect to pay a little bit more for the trendiness factor. Would return again for a special occasion."

  • "The Nickel Tap House is a fabulous addition to the Baltimore restaurant scene. Their food is just VERY GOOD! Their mussels are plumpy and juicy, the fries are perfect and their burgers very satisfying. Their beer selection is broad and intriguing. The staff are friendly and attentive, but what gets us to go back over and over again (in spite of the quite noisy environment) is simply the high quality of the food. A must try!"

  • "This new dining spot has a limited menu, that I am told will change with the seasons. It is advertised as an oyster venue, but oysters were small at this time, so my husband didn't order them. He did however, order the French onion soup, which he liked. The chef salad was okay, and he enjoyed his natty boh beer. I thought my curry carrot soup was okay, but didn't really care for the chopped wedge salad. Not as flavorful as I had hoped it would be. We will return on another evening to try a few different choices from the menu. I hope Nickel Taphouse will work out as a new spot in the neighborhood."

  • "We got home after a week away and the last thing we wanted to do was cook - plus we had nothing in the house! We were glad to get a table at the Taphouse. Food is a bit pricey - I wish fries or something came with the burgers, because a side order of fries is really more than I can handle these days - but it's good. I'm nervous about when we build our house and are walking distance from the Taphouse - we might be there all the time!"

  • "Prices on the oysters and beer were quite high. Nice selection on the oysters -- both raw and cooked. Beer selection was outstanding, one of the best I have seen in Baltimore. The service was efficient and very friendly. The food, much of it modeled on Buffalo tavern food, was okay but not much different really from your average tavern food. They seem genuinely interested in suggestions for improvement. We will definitely support this place and return. It's best days are yet to come."

  • "The food was very good. However, it was noisy and very warm where we were sitting (a booth in the back) I wouldn't go back. My friends liked it more than I did."

  • "This was our fifth visit to the restaurant. We really love the atmosphere, the food and the drinks. But the service has been consistently awful. We waited quite a while for our first drink order. After ordering a second round of drinks, only one showed up. After waiting several more minutes, had to track down our waitress by going up to the bar. Only one of the three orders of fries we ordered showed up with our meal. The others seemed to have been forgotten. Had to track down the waitress once again and continued to wait. Our meal was more than half way over and cold when the fries finally arrived. We had 6:30 reservations on a Tuesday evening. The restaurant was not full at all.Unfortunately, the service really made our visit uncomfortable. "

  • "First time here- and really liked it. Oysters, Salads, burgers, desserts, craft beers - all very good. Two "quibbles" - $3 a piece for roasted oysters? That's a bit steep, and they brought our entrees out before the salads. This seems to be happening more and more at restaurants, and I just don't get it. It's called a first course for a reason!"

  • "I like the booths..........entree-sized salads were GREEEEEEEEEEEAT. So glad for those. Keep it up. Also glad they were able to accommodate me since I am vegan. My non-vegan friend thought it would be nice if there were an option to add protein. Really liked the spiced chickpeas and the nuts. I often assemble my meal from sides and appetizers so was glad they had some vegetable sides that all looked very tasty. The dessert menu looked sort of "meh" but maybe we just weren't in the mood. Service was good. "

  • "Can't say enough good things about this spot! The menu always has a few new items but holds on to old favorites. Apps, entrees and desserts are all great! Such a wonderful addition to Mt. Washington. The only issue (on Fri/weekend nights) is noise; if you are looking for a more quiet dinner go on a weeknight."

  • "Soft shell crab special was smallish and set into fiery hot slurry that either the waiter didn't describe or I didn't hear. The heat totally overwhelmed the crab. Hubby didn't care for large pork cheese steak. He left half at restaurant (this never happens) Daughter loved her burger. Fries were great but a bit broken with too many small pieces. Drinks were good "

  • "The food is great, the waitstaff are meticulously attentive. The noise level is quite high, so intimate conversation is impossible, but the energy and decor make up for it. "

  • "The beef on weck and fries were great. The s'mores dessert was a bit of a miss - the chocolate was too hard and the graham cracker layers were flavorless."

  • "The Nickel Tap House has really made Mt. Washington a true restaurant destination. Good food and great service. "

  • "My wife and I have gone to the Nickel Taphouse 3 times previously, the last two months ago. When we went this Thursday, we found very little in the way of interesting choices. I'm not sure what else we had had previously that was no longer on the menu, but I know we had very much enjoyed the kale caesar."

  • "Dinner at the restaurant was great fun! Food, wine and service were excellent! We had a couple of spillage problems which were handled with amazing grace and efficiency. Even though the menu wasn't huge, I think it had enough variety and thoughtful items to please most palates. We would definitely go back!"

  • "Service here is glacial and erratic. The waiter was a very pleasant guy but it took forever to get things and we were not there on a busy night. The menu offerings are somewhat limited. Good bar food. But limited other options. "

  • "Went with a friend on a Friday night. Very busy, so it was great we had an OT reservation. Loved that we had a seat at the front on the bench that lines the front window—will request to sit there next time, too, as the rest of the restaurant is quite dark. Great ambiance with the exposed brick and rustic wooden bar—definitely similar (albeit smaller) to its sister restaurant, Birroteca. Got a bottle of wine to split and then ordered two servings of mussels to share (Thai curry and Provencale—both were tasty, but the Thai curry was the standout.) Shared the deep-dish key lime pie for dessert and it was divine—perfectly tangy and sweet. Can't wait to go back and would highly recommend! "

  • "If you like a variety of Oysters, soups, and fine local ingredients from meat to veggies to local craft brews, this is your place. This is definitely not "bar food" or fast food. and the oysters are $3 a piece, but the quality and variety cannot be beat i Baltimore."

  • "The food and service at the Nickle were very good. We also enjoyed the beer selection. It is very loud in there and I had to really project for my husband to hear me talking from across the table, but I think that's what they are going for. "

  • "A new restaurant seems to appear in this spot every now and then. This on is the best by far. All 3 of our meals were delicious, including the best burger my husband has had in a long time. The server was very attentive. And the on tap beers we had were yummy. Nice experience all around. Maybe a little on the expensive side but it was OK for the quality of the food. Would certainly eat here again. "

  • "We live 5 minutes away and have been to Nickel Taphouse many times. We have never been disappointed. The food is terrific and the service is very good. Some of our favorites are the burgers & the beet salad. Really just about everything! The only issue I have is the noise level. It can be very loud at times. But I always come back."

  • "We had a terrific experience at Nickel Taphouse. The food was delicious and the choice of beer was extensive. The staff was friendly and helpful. "

  • "This is my 3rd time eating here and the food continues to be outstanding. The first time we sat a the bar and had great service on a Friday night. The 2nd time we sat at a table on a Wed night and had great service. This time we went on a Monday night and we had reservations and it wasn't crowded at all and the hostess had us waiting for 10 min before she sat us (we were the only ones waiting and there were numerous avaiable tables). Then we sat down and the waiter didn't come to the table for another 10 minutes and he was not a great waiter. We will definitely go back bit it was very disappointing given the fact that the place was not busy and we had better service on busier nights. Great place if you are a beer lover. "

  • "Food and service were excellent. Will definitely return there. Only problem was we brought our 3 kids and the menu is a little limited for kids without a sophisticated palette. "
