Diner Reviews
  • "Food was excellent, service was superb , every thing was just delightful"

  • "Nearly 35 years ago we would visit this restaurant before it ever became the Mustard Seed. It has been so long we cannot remember the name of the restaurant then but we still remember the warm feeling and good food we shared so long ago. We were more than pleased to discover the same warm feelings and delicious food as we celebrated our 40th anniversary. A friendly greeting as we entered the door, the cozy ambiance and the wonderful smells from the kitchen greeted us. The bread, salads, scallops, rack of lamb and the warm chocolate souffle cake were all wonderful and we will enjoy returning to because the Mustard Seed has proven to be a worthy successor to that restaurant long ago that brought us so much pleasure."

  • "I am a graduate student at UC Davis, so I don't generally get a chance to eat at the more expensive establishments. When I do have the opportunity, The Mustard Seed is a great option! Excellent food and atmosphere, I particularly like their back porch."

  • "I cant stress how much I enjoyed this visit. It was my 3rd occasion to have dinner there and the quality and experienced never wavered. Each plate was prettier than the next.My guest and I had each 3 courses, abottle of pelligrino, and the bill was only $112 which was reasonable for the wonderful evening.the owner and wait staff were attentive, but never cloying.I seriousle can't wait for the scallops, crabcakes, lamb etc.again"

  • "Early lunch on Friday. That deserves a glass of wine! And a great wine list there was. Navarro wines and many other great choices. Chose the Sauvignon Blanc and friend had the Pinot Blanc. Great way to start the weekend. And that was just the wine. So nice to see the restaurant has maintained the same wonderful food too. Superb service and beautiful setting. Thanks for keeping this neighborhood gem alive."

  • "It is not the restaurants fault but parking in downtown davis is an real issue. If you go at certain times it is near impossible to find parking, someis even limited to 90 minutes. So please take this into consideration. But, highly recommend the restaurant."

  • "This is my second visit to the Mustard Seed and it was great both times. Everything was exceedingly fresh and all of the dishes we ordered (pork, steak and fish) disappeared. Great wine list and very attentive staff."

  • "We dine at Mustard Seed at least once a month. As always it was an enjoyable experience. It was a warm day and it did get a bit uncomfortable in the restaurant. The air conditioning should have been set at a lower temperature."

  • "First time we have been there , they reported us on Open table as we did not show wich was false. Now they only offered us 6pm or 7:30 and when we showed at 7:30 (wich was late for us), the restaurant was empty. At 9pm, the server was so clearly pushing us out that it was impolite and offending. They won't have a third chance to do bad with us."

  • "We used to come to Mustard Seed a lot. Since they changed ownership we have noticed a gradual decline. On this occasion, we ordered three courses each -- and discussed with the waitress the notion that we would like, if possible to have them come in order. She agreed with this and then the courses came out on top of one another. When one course was done, I had to find room on an adjoining table to leave the previous dish. We had to ask someone to ask the server to come back so that we could order another glass of wine. I had pork and asked it not to be over cooked, and it was over cooked. My wife had scallops and they were severely undercooked. The place is expensive but the food and service have not kept up. Previous owners were so great."

  • "We visited The Mustard Seed for the first time on a recommendation and were not disappointed. The food is excellent although the menu is not long. Prices seem reasonable for a nice restaurant. The outdoor area is clean and mostly shaded, but otherwise nothing special. The staff was courteous and attentive. Would definitely come back for another special occasion."

  • "It is so lovely on the shaded deck/patio at Mustard Seed on a warm day for lunch - so relaxing and like being on vacation. The staff is welcoming, helpful and prompt; the food is fresh, with good salads and sandwiches and great bread. It's a welcome interlude to meet a friend at Mustard Seed for lunch and step out of the busy world for a couple of hours."

  • "I have been a patron of the Mustard Seed off and on for over 18 years. Observing the transition of new ownership is a plus. The employees seem content, the food is delicious, and there is a positive vibe to the place. My teenage daughter and I had a wonderful dinner and we were served by the gracious owner. We also saw many locals. There is something to be said about going to a restaurant and seeing "neighbors" enjoy an evening out on the town. As for food, we shared crab cakes and watermelon salad, two favorites. We each had the scallops, which were beautifully served atop a dollop of mashed potatoes and spinach. Finally we shared sorbet to top off the meal. My coffee was fresh and my glass of wine was crisp! It was an enjoyable evening!"

  • "The Mustard Seed is a place that welcomes one with its attractive, intimate setting. With the new ownership, the food is particularly excellent, as was our dinner, wonderful wine, the service unimposing, calm yet perfectly timed. I am looking forward soon to another excellent meal in these comfortable and inviting surroundings."

  • "My wife and I debate whether MS is the best restaurant in Davis -- I believe it is, even after change in ownership. The menu is filled with specialties that are predictably excellent."

  • "We were delighted to find the best place with menu that fit for vegan also Everything was just right. Amazing lamb dish. Artichoke just right also. A great experience. Close to Pence Gallery"

  • "We dined at the Mustard Seed for our anniversary. The outdoor patio was quiet and very comfortable. The service was top-notch and their wine list was very comprehensive. We shared an artichoke and salad to start. My husband enjoyed the duck and I had the crab-stuffed trout. For dessert, the creme brulee was fantastic. All of the food was delicious and freshly prepared. We had a very enjoyable, romantic anniversary dinner."

  • "I love the service and the atmosphere of thşs plsce them most and you can talk pretty easily with much şess noise then most ğlsces becsuse its small and intimate. Its fine dining place so as expected it is a bit pricey. It is definety needed gem in Davis. Most delicous food was thhe quail I had until now, but its seasonal. Mostly really good food. "

  • "We had a lovely lunch on the patio before a movie downtown. As always, the ABLT was outstanding as was the tuna curry salad. The new owners have done a good job keeping up the consistency of the restaurant."

  • "Great Mother's Day dinner spot in Davis! We requested seating in the very cozy and comfortable back patio... quiet, airy, and with comfortable seating. The menu choices and wine list were excellent. Terrific country pate, watermelon salad, Caesar salad, risotto, and duck breast. Their croissant bread pudding is outstanding! Definitely a place to return to time and again."

  • "we had Mother's Day brunch. although not a buffet, the menu had something for every taste. b-fast as well as lunch selections and reasonably priced. moderate tasty portions. sat in the back garden. dueling music from another restaurant nearby. nothing "really" special, but an overall pleasant experience."

  • "Cute, small old house restaurant, nice atmosphere, was noisy when full, service was slow as we waited awhile after being seated for waiter, apps and wine came out right away then waited a very long time for main courses. Halibut entree was overcooked, dry and did not go well with asian viniagrette and mango salsa, forbidden rice, disjointed combo and the waiter recommended it! Lamb, crabcakes and tomoto bisque were good. Given the prices and overall experience, not sure I'd return."

  • "The service was outstanding. Wish I remembered our servers name. She was great. I will definitely be going back. "

  • "The Mustard Seed is a gem in the heart of Davis. The food was terrific, the staff were very personable and just attentive enough and the wine was fine too! The friend from out of town said The Mustard Seed was the best place he'd eaten on his entire trip! "

  • " I had not been back to The Mustard Seed since it has new owners. All 3 of us were delighted with the food and the service. We cleaned our plates of the BLT and the egg salad sandwich. Even though it was a very warm day we sat outside under the umbrellas and were quite comfortable. For desert we shared the rhubarb-strawberry pastry with ice cream and caramel sauce. Delicious, and I would make a return trip for just that. "

  • "The new owners have done a wonderful job with the restaurant. The wait staff is pleasant, friendly and well-trained. There are menu items for all palates light to heavy. And the desserts, did I mention the desserts? Fabulous!!!"

  • "Another evening of fresh local food and a calming dining experience. Try the artichoke for starters and make sure to have the asparagus strawberry salad. "

  • "I had heard great things about Mustard Seed, and we were very pleased with dinner there. Food is innovative, expertly prepared, with interesting use of grains and healthy seasonal veggies. The best gnocchi I have ever had, with crisp asparagus and creme fraiche. My friend had the halibut . . . .crispy on the outside, tender and moist on the inside, with forbidden (black) rice. Dessert was equally amazing . . .a warm chocolate cake with strawberry puree and fresh whipped cream. Service was top notch . . . our server was warm, attentive but not overly so, and did an expert job. We live in Granite Bay, but I will treat my husband to dinner at Mustard Seed soon."

  • "Our table was ready at our reservation time, the menu although somewhat limited compared to larger venues, was quite adequate and varied. It was noisy when we arrived, the tables are rather close, but soon quieted down. Street parking is always problematic."

  • "Wonderful food and service, perfect for celebrating our anniversary."

  • "I was taking my best friend out for dinner and concert for her birthday. She is not a foodie so I was a little worried. However she was delighted with the food. Our waitress was funny, witty and knew her menu both for wine and food. It was a beautiful evening so we had seating in the outside patio."
    Dined on 3/22/2014
  • "Good food though exceptionally small servings and overpriced for the quality. Service could be improved; the waitress was not engaging at all - better training would help."
    Dined on 3/20/2014
  • "This is a good overall restaurant. Nice ambiance. Good service. I ordered the pork tenderloin which was more like a pork chop. The mustard sauce was nice. The mash potatoes were good but too rich for me. I would have preferred more vegetables. A glass of wine was way too expensive but a glass is way too expensive everywhere. I went to a restaurant recently that was similar in quality to mustards and it was a joy that they offered a good glass of wine for a reasonable price. WE DO LIVE IN WINE COUNTRY!"

  • "We have eaten here many times over several years. It has had consistenly good food. The service has varied. It was a little slow during our last visit. It took us about twice as long to be served the various courses compared to other restaurants. They may need another server. Nevertheless, it is a unique, small place."
