Diner Reviews
  • "I didn't think anything was spectacular. My waiter was friendly enough but not very warm. Got the bag of doughnuts, scallop chowder, and oysters. The oysters were tiny. When they advertise oysters as being fat, I expect bigger, juicier ones. My favorite was probably the scallop chowder. I wish the doughnuts had more seafood inside. Sad that the chipotle aioli made the dish. They were also incredibly busy when I was there - Saturday night. Maybe that's why I did have a great dining experience."

  • "Very popular, great food, beautiful views if you sit outside! I had the largest mussels I have ever seen! We loved our waiter - attentive and great personality! We were there on a Saturday night and the noise level inside was incredibly high - ok if you don't mind that! We were so happy to be sitting outside instead!"

  • "We sat in the outdoor eating area, which was quite pleasant. The service was great! Always had full water glasses. Good selection of food. Knowledgeable and friendly waitress, Would highly recommend."

  • "Being outside on the gorgeous July night would have made our evening so much better but I'd didn't request an outside table. My fault. The menu was diverse and everything looked good. We ordered a bunch of appetizers, fish tacos, shrimp cocktail, and bag o donuts. We're not usually fried food people, these fritters, especially with the sauce, were really good. Every table ordered them. I really thought this was going to be a touristy restaurant but was pleasantly surprised with the meal."

  • "My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our first visit to Moorings, and will return next time we are in Newport. Service friendly, knowlegable and relaxed, in the middle of a very active dining scene. Adults and kids enjoying a large place, with an indoor/outdoor feel. Open table reservation honored, cutting about 45-60 minute wait to 15 minutes. Very good experience. Two bars enabled us to have a drink close to front of restaurant as we waited."

  • "Had an excellent seafood meal. Will definitely return when in area"

  • "This was my first time in newport and chose the mooring on referral of our inn. I made a last minute reservation requesting a sunset view and chilled bottle when we arrived. Was accommodated without question. Our server was extremely knowledgable and personable, as was the entire staff, including the manager who stopped by for a quick chat. They made us feel like celebrities, every restaurant should follow their lead!"

  • "Along with a wonderful meal, we were able to sit on their deck and enjoy a gorgeous sunset overlooking Narragansett Bay, filled with huge visiting yachts, complete with helicopter pads!"

  • "The Moorings has always been one of my favorites - great vibe, service and consistently innovative yet classic food. It is in the heart of Newport and has one of the great views of the harbor year round."

  • "The food and service at the Mooring is always consistent. Nice food and pretty good service for Newport at this time of year. I always feel like the bill is too high these days as $300 for 4 people with one decent bottle of wine still shocks me. Cheers!"

  • "This was by far the best food we've tasted in a long time! Their Portugese seafood dish and corn pudding was absolutely delicious! The pricing was reasonable."

  • "We've been to The Mooring several times over the past few years. The food is always excellent and the service wonderful. Several servers/support staff are always available to take your empty plates, bring more beverages or answer questions. For such a large restaurant we've never felt that someone isn't paying attention to us. If you can get a table outside you'll have a great view of the harbor and the sunset in the evening."

  • "However the food was just mediocre. Nothing special or out of this world but good. A little pricey in light of the food. Amazing interior right on water. We enjoyed the evening but everyone left thinking it was slightly above average. Felt a little chain restaurant like."

  • "Had a wonderful time on July 4th weekend. Newport was crazy busy so the Mooring was a nice break from the mob scene. The seating right on the waterfront was great with nice views and great breezes. The restaurant was busy but the staff handled everything nicely. Service was prompt and efficient but not hurried. The food was very good with the outstanding being the turf and surf sliders. Delicious."

  • "We had an outdoor table right overlooking the harbor and front row seats for a spectacular 4th fireworks display...which was an added treat! Our waiter, Dan was awesome and attentive. Food was great, especially the oysters and champagne (we got a dozen, 2 from each area..and then another half of our favorites). It was a perfect evening."

  • "We sat outside on a warm Thursday night and I can tell you it was very loud. Not only with the people, but the wind. Great for groups and catching up with friends. Food was good. I had lobster and beer sliders that were delicious. Pasta entree was just ok. They were out of the mix for all of their dessert cocktails which was a disappointment. Had the Guinness milkshake instead which was a huge disappointment. It seemed like they just dumped beer and milk in a glass and mixed it up - not very good - not even a decent presentation. Anyway, the waitress was okay, didn't wasn't very welcoming. I would definitely request to sit on the lower level outside because the upper level isn't very cozy."

  • "Several locals suggested The Mooring, and even touted it as the "best restaurant in Newport". This restaurant is decent but not memorable. The best thing going for this place is the ambiance and views. The wine list is extensive but the prices are what you'd expect at a touristy waterfront restaurant. The wine list was provided on a tablet where reviews of the wine were included, which was a nice service. In general, the food was a bit bland. The bag of rolls was undercooked and doughy. As we left the restaurant, we watched the host sternly speaking to one of the guests in the waiting area. I don't know what the person did, but it was unprofessional on the part of the host."

  • "The restaurant was extremely crowded on the 5th, night of the fireworks..I was concerned that our dinner was going to be cold and not cooked properly..our meal was 5 star, well presented, and as good as anything in NYC..."

  • "This was the first time to visit the Moorings on the 4th of July weekend. Very pleasant experience, professional service, and great food. We ordered apps only and the proportion size was large and very good. We would return again to this restaurant again as the food atmosphere are great and location is on the water with a Marina view!"

  • "I read a lot about The Mooring prior to dinning, and it lived up to the positive reviews. It's clear the Chef knows how to treat seafood correctly. Yes, it's pricy. However, most of Newport is pricy. If you splurge one night, this is the place. Better yet, try lunch, first. Then go back for dinner if you were happy. That's what we did."

  • "A favorite place that consistently comes through. The wait staff is friendly and informed on the menu. The atmosphere is amazing, and comfortable. The tables are a nice distance apart and you do not feel over crowded or on top of the next table. There is a plentiful menu of oysters and many other appetizers to start your meal. The entree menu has something for everyone, and nicely plated. A must do while in Newport, and if you're local do often:)"

  • "My husband and I had the best time at this restaurant. From the hostesses to the bartenders to the servers everything was perfection. We live in Brooklyn and both work in the restaurant business and we plan on taking the three hour drive to Newport just to visit this restaurant again. Words don't do this restaurant justice so just make the reservation while you can. The place was packed and everyone was having a great time. The service was also friendly. I just cannot say enough good things!!! We even visited the sister restaurant the Smokehouse the next day for lunch, and it did not disappoint. Excellent restaurant group."

  • "We were there for a 9 meal and the servers, bartenders, etc could not have been nicer. Even thought we were the last party to leave (had 5 people), we never felt rushed and the service stayed top notch through out our meal (even with lots of questions about the menu). The view is great and when it got chillier, plastic "windows" were put down to keep the outside dining space comfortable. We would go back."

  • "The restaurant is nice for outside, very casual dining. My husband and I prefer a quieter setting. The view is beautiful though and everyone seemed to be enjoying it. We shared the donuts that were recommended, basically friend dough with a bit of seafood and a great sauce. Not our favorite! I had the salmon which was tasty and my husband had the tuna, which he really liked as well. Our server jonathon was wonderful! Friendly and very informative."

  • "The Mooring is the type of restaurant one would expect from Newport--very busy and energetic but very good food and wonderful views of the ocean. It is a little over crowded and noisy but again its a very popular place and quite successful. I would never go without a reservation ahead of time. If you are looking for romantic and cozy, this is not the place for you, however if you want excellent seafood with an excellent view, then it is worth the trip."

  • "Booked a birthday dinner for my girlfriend here - we were seated immediately in the outside area (we were asked whether we preferred inside vs outside). The service was super fast and the waiter was very attentive! My water was replaced immediately with a new one when I discovered a bug inside the glass. All in all, we spent a little over $100 for the dinner, which is very reasonable in my opinion for a very nice, delicious dinner. I would highly recommend this restaurant if you are looking for good seafood in the Newport area!!"

  • "My wife and I visited this restaurant one evening on our anniversary vacation. It was a bit noisier than we were expecting, but the view was great and the food was wonderful. We ordered two raw oysters each (a first for us) and the waitress explained the technique for eating them. We then moved on to the single most flavorful bucket of mussels we've ever had, with bits of ham, onion and a broth with just the right amount of spice. The entrees were just the right size, well arranged and cooked just as ordered. The desserts were very underwhelming (we sent the creme brulee back as it had seemed to curdle), but we overlooked that due to all the other great food!"

  • "The mooring never disappoints. Newport is my second home and whenever friends are in town and they want a fantastic dining experience and the freshest of fish, this is where I bring them. recently had a friend in from London whose main goal was to have some great fish. We started with a 1/2 dozen oysters which were gone in seconds b/c they were so good. The onto some tuna tartar and scallop chowder - the chowder has scallops in it the size of a golf ball. I had the swordfish which was so perfect and he had the striped bass. On top of this, we were late for our reservation which they had no problem with and because of the occassion sat us in one of the best tables out on deck overlooking the yachts we dream of owning. Do Not miss here"

  • "Staff accommodated change of table and food allergy restrictions without the blink of an eye. Everyone we met was friendly and open to questions about specific entrees. Responses were honest and suggestions were right on target. Can't wait to go back."
