A word from The Julep Cup
Tops Magazine | 2013 - Blake Hannon

...Then, there are places like The Julep Cup, which is intent on elevating it to obscenely delicious levels....Chef Lindsay’s specialty is infusing southern comfort food with a bit of French flair...She graduated from Le Cordon Bleu in Chicago and earned the Superior Cuisine Medal...in Paris, (France). This deft hand is evident from your first bite to your last...Now, the Julep Cup has evolved into one of best places in Lexington... As my colleague, photographer Keni Parks, nicely put it when hearing the dish’s description, “every word you just said I love.” I agreed, but words barely do this tasty entrée justice.
Everything about The Julep Cup, from what’s on the walls to what’s on your plate, will give you a feeling that you’re experiencing something both familiar and unexpected.

Diner Reviews
  • "This restaurant is perfect after a day of betting on horses at Keeneland or any other time. Very helpful and friendly staff and great food. "

  • "An excellent evening out and Heather was extraordinary."

  • "Ate there last night with a group of friends. Both the food and service were excellent. I had the filet, which was perfectly cooked and melt in your mouth tender. Had macaroni and cheese as a side which was wonderful as well. I was there with a group of seven, and everyone loved their food!"

  • "Really enjoyed the ambience and menu. Only disagreeable thing was the service. While our waitress was pleasant, I'm not certain she had any experience. She said some inappropriate things, and was inattentive to our needs. LOVED everything else about our visit and will definitely try again."

  • "Dinner was great! I wasn't expecting the quiet atmosphere. The Julep Cup was very slow on the friday night that we were there, but my friend and I enjoyed our pre-race experience. It was nice to be in a relaxing environment and the unexpected Jazz music was fun! I would return here!"

  • "The night we were at The Julep Cup we were the only diners in the dining room. The Julep Cup needs to advertise more, do something to attract more patrons. The food is always good, service has been sketchy over time but was very nice this time. We don't want to lose this neighborhood restaurant but too many folks don't think of the Julep Cup when they are making dinner plans."

  • "Julep Cup's menu is Southern in concept with many delightful revisions to add surprise, and Southern in hospitality. Its interior furnishings, lighting and table arrangement are intimate, and its staff warm and personable. In addition to the excellence of its kitchen, the portions are generous without sacrificing presentation. The experience is kind of like eating at Grandma's...if Grandma were a five-star chef. Another HUGE plus was live music during the main dining hours. A sultry singer, a great jazz man on the keyboard, and the occasional guest from the audience really made the evening sing. We'll be back!"

  • "The food was excellent, we especially loved their deviled egg appetizer. The atmosphere is warm and inviting with downhome hospitality. They had a 3 piece band playing folk music the night we were there. All in all, a wonderful experience."

  • "We enjoyed the food as usual and particularly the jazz duo of Gail Wynters & Jay Flippin. The food was excellent and the service was too. very enjoyable experience"

  • "Our book club met at The Julip Cup and it was my first, but not last, visit. We were given a quiet private room which we appreciated but the main dining area is lovely. Food and service were excellent. Very enjoyable."

  • "We made reservations in advance as we were in town from Columbus, OH for the weekend. We eat out A LOT! Quite possibly the best whole meal we have ever had! From apps, to drinks, to the main event...good was top notch. The fried green tomatoes were unbelievable! Service was impeccable, too!"

  • "The food was great. Our party of two had the beef and the southern fried chicken. Both excellent. The ambience was great for a Friday night out. I had coffee. I wasn't impressed by the coffee, very bland. Our waitress had a slightly odd approach but she was fine. We will return most definitely."

  • "Our first time at the Julep Cup, and it won't be our last. We were looking for a special place to celebrate a birthday, and wanted a local vibe since we are from out of town. The decor here was classic, warm and inviting, and the service was excellent. The wine recommended was superb. Their menu is extensive, and there was something for everyone to enjoy. My filet mignon was the best I think I've ever eaten, and one person ordered the fried chicken which he says was also the best he's had in a long time. (mom's have to take the #1 spot right). The live music (a cello and base) was beautiful and not too loud as to deter our dinner conversation. Wonderful experience overall!"

  • "The setting was warm with the dark red walls and soft lighting. The food was excellent. For the quality, it was priced about right."

  • "Daughter is a UK freshman - our 4th visit to JC. Prior meals were outstanding; not so this one. Wife and I with our two teenagers seated promptly for 8pm reservation but 10 minutes before Taylor arrived with menus and a wine list. Asked for a bourbon list - 10 more minutes. Chose a bourbon and bottle of wine. Bourbon served but after 10 minutes learned they didn't have the wine. Chose a different wine and later learned they didn't have that one either. Third pick was in inventory. Food was delicious and interesting as usual. Son's first and second courses were not what he ordered. Both kids' birthdays - asked for something with dessert (candle?). Nothing. Will give Julip Cup another chance but trying other Lexington restaurants first."

  • "For a quiet, intimate, even romantic atmosphere in Lexington, The Jupep Cup can't be beat. The food is tops and the service is too. Three out of three ain't bad, it's great!"

  • "The BBQ Shrimp and Country Ham Biscuit appetizers are incredible, we loved our beef bourguignon and salmon entrees, and tried the homemade ice cream and pistachio cake, so good. Lots of creativity and great flavors! Service was great again!"

  • "I made reservations for my Mom's 88th Birthday Lunch because I thought Valentine's Day may have been crowded at The Julep Cup. My sisters and I were treating her to lunch. The Julep Cup acknowledged my reservation and asked what complimentary dessert she would want. Since my Mom is allergic to nuts and alcohol, the staff was careful to make sure the choice was suitable for her. Lunch was delightful and delicious. The staff was friendly and attentive to our needs. The prices were very reasonable. The presentation of the food was eye-catching. Congratulations to The Julep Cup for providing another wonderful dining experience to an 88 year old and her three daughters!"

  • "This is the second Valentine's my wife and I have dined here. This year, we invited another couple, and we had a FABULOUS time. The wine list, food, dessert and service were outstanding. AND, we don't like LOUD obnoxious music, so that was also a big plus! We would love to come and listen when the keyboard player is back!"

  • "My husband and I celebrated Valentines Day one day late and decided to give the Julep Cup a try, neither of us had been there. We were immediately impressed with the luxurious décor, and had super hospitality from both the manager and our waiter. In addition to the romantic atmosphere, we knew the entertainer who played the harp that night, such a wonderful touch! We both enjoyed our food and I was happy I ordered liver and onions, which can be a risky choice sometimes. It was delicious! My husband had his usual filet and it was perfect. We were very impressed, happy and FULL - we would go back for any special occasion in the future without hesitation."

  • "Being one of the few places that allows outside wine for a corkage fee, this place has a significant advantage when thinking of having high end wine fir a special occasion. The food is excellent and the service is very personal. Live music is an extra treat that you don't find at many other upper end restaurants in the Lexington area."

  • "My wife and I decided at the last minute to stop somewhere for a nice meal. Found on OpenTable that The Julep Cup was seating right away. Absolutely an excellent choice! The appetizers, salads, entrees and great wine list lead to a wonderful evening! Absolutely will return!!!"

  • "Food was delicious as always, I tried veal liver which was an exceptional dish and the crisp bacon on top was different. The Mac and cheese was great as always. Also great wine and service. Will forever be a customer there! The Julep Cup is the best restaurant in town"

  • "Wonderful food and very helpful, excellent service! Took a little whe to get our check as our waiter was called to cover extra tables, but we didn't mind because we were having such a great time! Live music was an extra..."

  • "I enjoyed dinner there with friends. The food was OK, but it was odd that they only had limited quanities of dinner entrees and dessert choices - not enough to serve a small group early on a weekend day. The service was excellent - very attentive. Soups are excellent. I do not recommend the apple crisp dessert - uncooked, hard fruit with a tasteless topping."

  • "Even though this spot is a little off the beaten path, (and by that I only mean 3 miles from downtown) this was a fantastic find! Portions were HUGE. Staff was so friendly and attentive. The musicians played beautifully. Recommend the chocolate bourbon desert!!"

  • "The Julep Cup has excellent and high-end atmosphere, a delicious Hors d'oeuvre selection, and stellar service. I will return and have already told others about the exceptional time our party had."
    Dined on 12/17/2013
  • "We went on others' recommendations. The menu was enticing. Soups and salads were divine. But the entrees, while the recipes were clearly spot on good, were poorly executed. Over cooked and dry Cassoulet. I would give this place another try."

  • "Although we live in the Chicago area, our daughter lives in Lexington and we have dined at the Julep Cup multiple times. We always find the food to be excellent with prompt and courteous service. This is a quiet restaurant with a level of charm we always enjoy. Although the dining room is somewhat small, they can accomodate groups up to 12 or 14. The tables are well spaced so you do not feel you are intruding on other people."
