the ivy inn gets 5 stars because of its consistent excellence. warm greeting at reception, excellent waitress, dishes served promptly but not too fast, portions right-sized, well-seasoned, tasty food prepared perfectly. no negative criticisms; this is highly unusual for me. appetizers of pork terrine and shrimp & grits were fabulous. the latter is very rich so they (properly) provide a relatively modest portion. main courses of scallops and the pork chop (praised by many other reviewers) were big winners too. the atmosphere is relatively formal but not excessively so. we shared the appetizer cheese sampler for dessert and loved 5 out of the 6 cheeses. unfortunately we're only passing through charlottesville because we'd love to come back.

From the friendly greeting of the receptionist, to the lovely spacious table set for us, to the very helpful and accomodating waiter, the Ivy Inn is a special place. The waiter recommended a great bottle of pinot noir for us to share which complimented our meals - one beef and one fish. My Rag Mountain trout was seasoned and cooked perfectly, the beef filet was also perfect, and all the seasonal vegetables were delicious. We shared a lovely key lime pie and coffee. The price was probably the most we have paid for a meal in Charlottesville, but was well worth the price. We had a perfect 45th anniversary evening.

My wife and I had dinner at the Ivy Inn Restaurant for the third time and we again thoroughly enjoyed the dining experience. In general, we do not like to eat big meals and prefer quality over quantity. The menu at the Ivy Inn Restaurant is not extensive and varies over time, but every item we've ordered (salad, entrée, desert) has been excellent and we look forward to dining at this restaurant many times in the future. In addition, the smaller second-floor dining rooms are especially quiet and enhance the dining experience.

This is a beautiful restaurant in a beautifully restored old house in a quiet location in Charlottesville. Because each dining room is small the atmosphere is perfect for an intimate dinner. We made reservations for our anniversary through Open Table and were treated to two flutes of champagne. The service was impeccable - friendly yet not overbearing. When we ordered dessert it came with "Happy Anniversary" in chocolate across the plate. A lovely touch! The food was delicious and perfectly prepared, it was somewhat predictable which is the only reason I'm not giving the Ivy Inn five stars. But in every other way it was fantastic and I would call this the #2 restaurant in Charlottesville.

I thought the food was good, as was the service. However, with a modest bottle of wine, tax and tip, the total was over $160, which I felt pricy for the overall experience.

We had a wonderful meal at the Ivy Inn recently. The ambience was pleasant, the service wonderful, the menu choices enticing, and accommodation of special food needs was carried out gracefully in the the case of a food allergy but my request for low salt did not carry through. Our waiter advised against a particular choice on the grounds that it was unavoidably salty so I switched my choice to one he indicated would not be salty. Sadly it seemed as if extra salt had been added, so this definitely detracted from the meal. My husband and I were there as guests of the third member of the party so I did not complain at the time as I did not want to be impolite to my host. Otherwise we had a wonderful meal.

We had a lovely dinner to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. It was a romantic setting. Special menus were given to us, complimentary champagne to toast our anniversary and a delicious dessert with "Happy Anniversary" in chocolate...yum. My husband had the beef tenderloin, which he said was excellent. I had the ricotta gnocchi with the braised short ribs. I thought it was an interesting combination. It was very tasty. We would recommend the Ivy Inn. Especially for a special occasion.

We have eaten at Ivy Inn many times. The atmosphere is very nice. This time, however, the food was not up to expectations - rather bland. Also, many of the dishes have pork in them. I asked for a different sauce for my fish on the side, but was first given the sauce with pork, which I did not realize before tasting. Not good. Other than that, the service is generally helpful, though the spoons we were given for dessert were too large for the thin glass it was served in, and I had to ask for others. So...a mixed experience.

Our son was complaining about the food at UVA, so we took him for dinner at the Ivy Inn, an excellent choice. They had some cocktails I had never heard of before. The one I tried was very good as was the mint julep my wife ordered, something that was not on their list but which they especially made at her request. We particularly recommend the lamb and the bison; both were excellent. Unless you like salty food, avoid the duck. My wife got that and was not happy with it. We were too full for desert, but what I saw on other tables looked good.

The waitress presented us with a glass of sparking wine and a menu wishing us a "Happy Anniversary" -- a nice start to a celebratory evening. Appetizers: Foie gras - totally melt-in-your mouth delicious. Shrimp & grits - he judged the dish very good. Main course: I was a bit reluctant to order poultry with a pork au jus, but the Polyface chicken breast with country-ham au jus was delicious. I would order it again. He ordered the sole which had a smoked flavor. I tasted and did not like it. He ate it all. We brought our own wine which they accommodate for a small corkage fee. We appreciate this service.

The Ivy Inn has a varied menu, thoughtfully prepared. Both of us had less-than-normal menu items (not steak or salmon!). do yourself a favor and do the same. Staff were very knowledgeable about preparation and ingredients, so there were no surprises when the dishes were placed in front of us. Wine list was heavy on wonderful Californians. Sadly, being from CA, it held no surprises. Would have loved to see some of the local wines by the glass. But mind you, I am a spoiled for choice Californian and may be a bit picky!

TA recommendation of The Ivy Inn Restaurant did not let us down! We made reservations for the Restaurant on the evening following UVA's Homecoming Game. The atmosphere was relaxing and in keeping with the decor and the menu. The service was outstanding. The menu featured so many amazing combinations of foods that it was difficult to choose. My husband decided on the Grilled Bison Hangar Steak with Horseradish Scalloped Potatoes. I can honestly say it was the best bison I have ever had! I ordered the Grilled "Rag Mountain" Trout which was also outstanding. Additionally we enjoyed a Stuffed Date Salad and for dessert, Sticky English Toffee Pudding. Yum! The Restaurant tries to get as much as possible locally - farms, breweries and wineries.

We were in Charlottesville to celebrate our anniversary and reserved at the Ivy Inn based on reviews we had read. We were not disappointed. We requested to sit downstairs and were very pleased. The room was charming and very comfortable. Our waiter was extremely pleasant and professional. When my husband asked for a wine recommendation, he offered to let him sample the wine before settling. The food was excellent. I had delicious scallops and my husband had the rainbow trout, which he loves. Both dishes were extremely well prepared. We had profiteroles for dessert.....a delicious way to end the meal. We highly recommend The Ivy Inn.

This is a MUST GO restaurant in a B & B. The entry is quaint with "old" ivy and brick. The restaurant is in an old home, chock full of charactor and feels warm and inviting. The staff unobtrusive and attentive, just right. The food - ahhhh the food. My husband declard the rack of lamb the best he has ever eaten (and he has eaten it in New Zealand and all over the world). I had fois gras - a touch overcooked for my rare palate, but still a treat with the presentation. We shared Virginia wine, and enjoyed every bite and sip.

Our reservation was for the evening and we were unfortunately late. We did not get choice seating because of this, but were seated next to the wall on the first floor. The food was fantastic. The cheese selection served with choice artisinal bread was highly enjoyable. The restaurant pulled from the local area. Very much a pleasure. I enjoyed the bison steak for my main course which was prepared medium and sliced. It was delightful. My husband enjoyed the filet and that was cooked beautifully and flavorful. The mashed cauliflower which was browned and served with his steak was delicious. As were the au gratin potatoes. There was no room for dessert. However, I did take a piece of the key lime pie with me which was enjoyed later. A treat!

My wife and I, plus two other guests ate dinner here for my wife's birthday. I thought my food was excellent and the rest of the table felt similar about their food. We had a reservation and were seated quickly in an upstairs room. My main criticisms would be that I thought the room was too dark. I understand they are creating ambiance, but if I can barely see my food it interferes with the experience and makes the diner sleepy. Secondly I thought the wine list was a bit steep and shockingly featured no local wines. For an area of the country known for its vineyards this was a bit strange. Many of the locals spoke highly of the restaurant and I would say that their admiration was well placed.

This meal hit all the high notes until the very end, when our dessert choice (chocolate pudding) turned out to be merely very good instead of wonderful. Everything else--cocktails, wine, appetizers, entrees, and service--merited the highest praise. For the record, we had shrimp and grits, the appetizer-sized gyro that usually comes with the lamb entree, flounder with oyster-cornbread stuffing, and trout. All featured inventive accompaniments and perfectly blended flavors. Coming from DC, we found the Ivy Inn to be an excellent value for the price. Those tired of overly buzzy restaurants will appreciate the cozy, quiet dining areas, too.

The chef here trained at the Culinary Institute, and it shows. An inventive use of ingredients, from fish to duck to game - a tantalizing touch. A lovely experience, in a homey old Inn. The chef was accommodating to dietary needs and preferences. Presentation was also lovely from my perfectly delicious trout, to the bison with scalloped potatoes and the fantastic flounder over seafood. Save room for dessert, which is hard with the fresh baked bread to start. The Kahlua ice cream accented perfect profiteroles, and a buttery apple crisp were superb. Only disappointment was the chocolate pudding--nothing very special, but pretty, for sure. Great service, nice by the glass wine list. All in all, a fantastic evening.

The entrance was engaging with old plantings, brick walk, and historical house. The interior was soothing and comfortable. Our waiter appeared fairly new.The food was disappointing . Bread basket offered flavorless breads; Flounder was overwhelmed with a spicey rub, succotash was drowned in tomato sauce; duet of lamb or the other hand showed a balanced hand and was cooked perfectly though offering a gyros with lamb chops seemed a bit odd and the rare lamb didn't come off as tasty and textural as a regular gyros.
