  • "Have been a fan of Hardshell in Shockoe Bottom over the years and am now a die hard for the Bellgrade location as well. Mixed greens with gorgonzola vinaigrette and crabcakes with asparagus. Two perfect lump backfin cakes with no filler, melt in your mouth perfection. I am from the Chesapeake Bay area and these crabcakes were just like home. Impeccable service, food, drinks, music, ambiance! Can't say enough good things about Hardshell."

  • "Started with a fine glass of Pinot Grigio and an appetizer of fried oysters with lemon dill creme fraiche. Oysters were heaven. My dining partner started with a salad. Very fresh but too slight on the dressing, couldn't even tell it was there. We had them bring extra, glad she did so that we could tell how delicious the Herb Gorganzola tasted. Main entrees were pan seared Crab Cakes and Surf and Turf. Crab Cakes were very good with the jasmine rice. The Filet Mignon was cooked perfectly to my medium request and was melt in your mouth tender. The Lobster tail was cooked just right, not rubbery and tasted sweet and delicious. We had just enough room left to split Key Lime Pie. Perfect sweetness, not too tart. Pricey meal, worth it!"

He can make suggestions to customers and always thinks of ways to make the customer happy. No matter what, he always has a smile on his face. The oysters and mussels are really good and I love being able to put together my own dinner with the fish, sauce and side options on the menu. Great wine and beer options. We have dined at the Cary Street Hard Shell, but find the Bellgrade location to be much more vibrant and with excellent food and service. This was our second visit for dinnner at this location. We were seated promptly, and were greeted quickly by our server. He was very knowledgeable, professional and attentive. The salads were fresh and our entree's were hot and delicious. Coupled with good wine, this was a stellar dining experience. Highly recommended."

  • "If you're looking for great seafood in the Richmond, VA area, look no further than The Hardshell at Bellgrade. If someone in your party prefers a seafood alternative, The Hardshell also serves delicious steaks, chicken and ribs. Our party of four declared the She Crab Soup and Lobster Chowder very good, as well as the Fried Oysters. Two of us had the Shrimp and Grits and found the grits to be creamy and the shrimp cooked perfectly. However, we both felt the dish needed a little "kick". Next time I would like to try the Rockfish, which sounded delicious on the menu. Both service and ambiance were very good, and I would definitely recommend The Hardshell at Bellgrade."

  • "We have become used to many restaurants attracting diners by quantity rather than quality so this was a good experience for our group of three. The portions were smaller but the quality was excellent and the service was attentive but not overdone. It would have been nice if the happy hour specials carried over from the bar to the restaurant. To take advantage of the appetizer and drink specials you would have to start at the bar - which was a small area and quite overcrowded with suits on a Monday evening and on the loud side - and then move into the restaurant to dine later. It's probably better to come to dine or come for the bar, as the two locations are quite different mood levels."

  • "As long as you order seafood, I believe you will enjoy your meal. However, I've ordered steak on 2 previous occasions and both were overcooked (with the re-cook incorrect as well). My husband and I went for a belated V-Day meal and I got the 6oz filet and crab cake. The crab cake was spot on as they always are. Delicious!! My filet however (ordered Rare +) came out medium. I'll eat an undercooked steak over an overcooked steak anytime. When the next filet came out...it was rare alright...ice cold inside. I've never eated a cold steak before but there's a first time for everything. I didn't want to send it back a 3rd time. I'll never order steak again but will return based on positive past experiences with seafood."

But this time everything came together for a perfect experience, and it's rare that any dining event is perfect all around. Salad, oysters, steak, salmon, crab: all perfect. Service, perfect. Noise level, perfect. It wasn't a special occasion, but it became one."

  • "I originally wanted to go to Flemings at Stony Point, but it was hard to get a reservation even 2 weeks prior to Valentines Day. I haven't eaten at the Hard Shell in over 7 years, and that was at the downtown location. This time I have to say I was somewhat disappointed. The sangria was very weak and tasted more like flat orange juice. The NY strip steaks were cooked as requested, but tough as shoe leather and a little burnt around the edge, although the lump crabmeat was superb. Next time, I think I'll try Flemings or Ruth's Chris-which is right next door."

  • "My husband's meal was perfect. The halibut - he loved it. The appetizers were delicious and the service was great. My crab pasta was kind of bland, not bad, just lacking flavor. The restaurant was kind and comp'd us the meal and an after dinner drink which wasn't really necessary but appreciated. I have been before and they also do a great happy hour! We would definitely go back as they definitely made every effort to make sure everything was great for us and we have had great experiences in the past!"

  • "My wife and I have visited the Hard Shell on Cary street a number of times, enjoying each visit, but dinner at the Hard Shell - Bellgrade was a much more enjoyable event. First, the restaurant is much larger and more brightly lit. Also, the place was packed, which is always a good sign that others have had good experiences that they want to repeat. We split a 2-pound lobster and a 10-ounce filet. Each of us had a salad, and a glass of Santa Julia Malbe, which is one of our favorites. The lobster was excellent and the steak was very good. Probably would have benefitted from an herb butter glaze. The service was very good. Prices were not bad. Very pleased overall, and will visit again!"

  • "We arrived to a very quiet bar and restaurant . We sat at the bar and were the only ones there. Bartender was very good and attentive. Seafood was very good, but the restaurant was extremely quiet and boring. Brunch menu was less than exciting and the prices very high! Red wine list, by the glass, very limited. We would not go back for brunch....maybe dinner."
