Diner Reviews
  • "Getting the kinks out of a new menu and what appears to be a new staff obviously is a problem! When the waitress announced she was new I knew we were in trouble. Nothing was in a timely manner and I was served the wrong drink and a cold swordfish entree(ugh). When I asked about a substitution I was told abruptly that no substitutions are allowed. All I wanted was a caesar salad that was from the price fix menu. They already make it and I didn't want that grilled caesar salad monstrosity. I am the customer and I am paying the bill and I want what I want and I don't care what it costs. And another thing: a reserved table by the windows is just that and not a table in the middle of the room. Last and least- no bread basket - Did they forget?"

  • "We were looking for restaurants on Open Table and thought this looked like a good one. Nice view, good menu. Made the reservation on Monday for Valentine's day Friday. On Friday, the Valentine's Day menu popped up. The choices were lessened severely. We arrived, the tables were just fine, but only 1/2 of their dining room was used. Despite this, our waiter showed up a total of 3 times in 1 hour 45 min. a) to take our order b) to fill our water glasses one time and c) only after I asked him for the bill after a 20 minute wait after dessert. All other things were taken care of by food runners. The food was not good at all. NY steak had way too much gristle, the champagne was bitter and we left unimpressed. A real shame."

  • "My wife and I dined here on valentines day. We had only eaten here prior in the outside patio area which we love. The service wasn't the best that night and our waitress wasn't dressed how you would expect for a nice dining restaurant; however the food was very good and portions were a good size too! We would prefer to have more distance between tables next time too."

  • "A little disappointed with the fact we had to eat in the bar. If we had known that when we made reservations we would have tried another night"

  • "I've been going to the Gelston House for many years now...it's not only convenient for pre or post theater dining next to the Goodspeed Opera House, but the food is always good and the wait staff is usually dependable. Our waitress was especially professional and friendly on our most recent visit, making the evening perfect. :)"

  • "This was our first experience at The Gelston House and it was fabulous! We had a lunchtime celebration for my mother's birthday. When we arrived, the dining room was very quiet, then the crowds arrived and it did become quite noisy but overall the atmosphere and ambiance were lovely and comfortable. The view of the water was awesome and added to the relaxed atmosphere. Our server was attentive but not overwhelming, she was just perfect! The food was out of this world, tasteful and elegant, and good sized portions for lunch. We will definitely return for another visit."

  • "More often than not, the reason to choose Gelston House for a meal was its proximity to the Goodspeed Opera House. Past experiences suggested that the "captive audience" wasn't fully appreciated and that the dining was uninspired and overpriced. They have upped their game. The food and service now reflect a genuine effort to reward patrons for trying them. The setting on the CT river is delightful. While not quite a foodie destination, our most recent experience reflected good quality and a very pleasant venerable New England Inn experience. Our waiter, Allen, was both professional and friendlhy, and the wine and food worth repeating."

  • "A great place to have lunch before attending a matinee at the nearby Goodspeed. Seating and service were prompt, food very good, and the view of the river always a treat. Very good value for the moderate price. We will return."

  • "Beautiful setting overlooking Connecticut River and Goodspeed Opera House. We have been here before and enjoyed good service but this time the service was very poor. Also there was poor communication between the waitstaff who took the order and the server who brought the food items."

  • "It is always a nice evening to enjoy dinner prior to attending a show at Goodspeed."

  • "This is an ok place to dine if you are attending a Goodspeed theater performance. Scenic view of the Connecticut River outside your window makes up for the overpriced ordinary food and the inconsistent service."

  • "2nd time we have eaten here. 1st time about a year ago, everything but the view was terrible, especially the service. This time, the opposite. Food and service very good! We will definitely try again, maybe outside if the weather is good."

  • "Great location and wonderful atmosphere. Can't you find a decent chef? Notice I said decent not even good. The only reason they have business is due to goodspeed. The experience has never been good here but this was particularly bad. Dinner was barely passable and dessert inedible. Find someone who can actually cook. Good location for kitchen nightmares."

  • "This is the prettiest restaurant I've ever been to. The location on the banks of the river and convenience to Goodspeed are unmatched. The service is excellent. The food, however, left a lot to be desired. Perhaps it was what I ordered (Lobster Shepherds Pie), but it was not good. There was little flavor, less lobster, and it was hard to tell the difference among the components. What sounded interesting on the menu, and came with a recommendation from the server, was clearly a mistake on my part. I should have stuck with something more familiar. Having dined at the Gelston House previously, I know they can do better than Lobster Shepherds Pie. Everything else I had was fine, though the housr salad dressing was a bit too sweet."
