  • "We went there for dinner on Valentine's Day - Feb 2014. The restaurant was crowded but our table was available right on time. From the minute we sat down our waitress was friendly and her service was fabulous! My boyfriend surprised me with a marriage proposal. Our waitress was immediately there with two glasses of champagne to help us celebrate. After spending three hours enjoying a fabulous dinner and celebrating, the waitress informed us the entire bill was picked up by the restaurant. This was a complete surprise, and completely unexpected! As we were walking out other staff was offering their congratulations. The venue is top notch! Highly recommend this restaurant! We are so looking forward to going back!"

  • "As usual, we enjoyed our evening at the restaurant. I was very much relieved when our waiter showed up. As we were waiting for him (just a short wait, nothing long), I heard a waitress at the next table, telling in a rather harsh voice "will you let me finish!," She was discussing specials. I thought it may have been friends of hers, but by their reaction, they weren't. She later apologize at least two or three times to them. She also seemed to go on and on in between apologies. I was hoping that she wouldn't come to introduce herself to us as our waitress, because I would have then got up, go the the hostess stand and asked to be moved to another table or have another wait person take care of us. There was no way I'd have her wait on us."

  • "Had a good business dinner with my customer. Would have liked a more scenic table but service was good. I would go back and try more of the menus items. Tuna was good but swordfish was dry. Highly recommend the deserts."

  • "We were glad we went to the Cannery. The restaurant was crowded but our reservation was honored. I think the place to sit is outside so be sure to request when you make your reservation. We sat inside and only had a glimpse of the harbor. The sushi was divine! The salmon and crab cakes fresh and delicious. Sea salt bread pudding was more like a mousse. Service was very rushed. I don't like ordering a bottle of wine where they pour it so fast. There was no time between courses. We felt like they wanted the table."

  • "It was my birthday and I must say, I have been a member of open table for several years and this is the first resturant that has been very disappointing! The resturant looked nothing like the picture on open table. Our server only checked with us one time to see if we needed anything, we had to request for beverages and when I requested my left over food to be packed up...it was returned to me without everything that I told them I wanted off my plate."

  • "We love the Cannery and have been going there since the 1980's and have enjoyed watching it evolve into such a lovely property with fabulous food and impeccable service. Each year we look forward to Lawry's Prime Rib from Beverly Hills bringing their famous prime rib meal to Orange County and to the beautiful Cannery Restaurant. They do this once a year and it's something we don't want to miss. It's an amazing meal with an amazing presentation."

  • "Although the competition is getting tougher and tougher The Cannery remains one our Newport Beach favorites. The food was great, I recommend the Burrata cheese appetizer and the Seafood Bouillabaisse. As a New Englander I can attest the Clam Chowder is legit. Big chunks of clams, nice smokey flavor and not too salty as is often the case. The Brochette got good reviews as well. Overall, The Cannery remains a place you can count on for consistently good food. The portion size seems to be decreasing and its not inexpensive but no one left hungry and all where happy!"

  • "My 3rd time here and was really disappointed. The bar area was really cool, good crowd and service while we waited for our table. I asked for my filet to be cooked medium and it came out WAY undercooked. The waiter took it back and it came back way over cooked! Ended up just having a couple bites. What a waste! The mashed potatoes were delicious! The bus boy spilled my husbands glass of red wine all over the table and my dress. Thank god it was black! Our waiter comped our dessert and gave us a glass of wine that was different and not as good as the spilled glass. (We had ordered a bottle) overall just ok. Don't think we would go back for dinner. Maybe a drink or two in the bar though."

  • "I wanted this night to be a memorable one. We got there an hour early and went upstairs for drinks and some conversation. Both went well. Downstairs was exactly what I wanted. We requested a table on the window and we got one. The food was AMAZING. I will and have recommended this place to my family. We will be back for a special occasion soon."

  • "Great atmosphere. The swordfish was the BEST I have EVER had. The rabbit special was a disappointment. Too little rabbit, and it was shredded meat, not pieces like I expected. Also the sauce was wrong for this dish. It was replaced with the Bouillabaisse which was excellent. I would recommend this place."

  • "When we first arrived service started off great, drinks and appetizer were served right away. Then main courses took a turn, they were very late. My husband ordered lobster which was overdone and I ordered filet mignon which was underdone the side dishes were good though... After that we attempted to get our car from the valet and it took over 20 minutes and repeated checkins on the status of the car to get them to finally bring it around. When it finally arrived they had blocked off the entrance with cars moved by the valet so we has to walk down the Parking lot to get to our car... So much for curbside valet... I would recommend this place as a lunch spot not a dinner spot"

  • "I had a great experience last year, but this one was disappointing. On the positives, the Open Table booking allowed me to request a table with a view and when I mentioned that my parents were in from out of town, the hostess mentioned it and made them feel so welcome. And food did taste good. But the service was incredibly slow. And it really is overpriced for what you get. Plus, my parents couldn't hear a thing above all the noise. It was a bad choice on my part."

  • "In town for a conference and came here for dinner. Service was excellent. Food was even better. We sat by the water and had it not been pouring rain that night, view would have been amazing. Looked amazing even though it was raining. Can only imagine how cool it would be when weather allows for folks to be in their boats. Restaurant decor was fascinating, a nice blend of the history of building, owner's appreciation of baseball, and a high end restaurant atmosphere. Thankfully, I'm not close to restaurant as I would be here all the time. But when I'm again in the area, I will definitely be back."

  • "I was looking for a fine sea food restaurant to take my wife for her birthday. We were a bit early so went to the bar where we were personally fixed drinks as we requested from the bartender without question. The table and flowers I ordered on line was exactly as I wanted. The menu was varied, from Main lobster to a specialty hamburger. The food was a bit pricy, but I expected that from a place that had a dress code. The portions were small for the price, and this is the first time I had bread sticks cooked in the bouillabaisse. There were two large scallops, a muscle and one clam. If there was a half lobster, it was a very small one. Two small chucks of white fish and that was it. The other meals were small portions and bland."

  • "We dine here a couple of times a month and it is always great. This time around we had the crab cake and piquillo peppers and for entrees the swordfish and the scallops. The scallops weren't even on the menu, but I inquired and our server said I could order them -- and even offered three different options. All were excellent. The view cannot be beat and the service is always crisp."

  • "If I had been here on a inn holiday I think it would have been better. But this place def did not have their S($t together for valentines day. Hostess was very overwhelmed and rude, table was terrible and crowded, service was very slow. I think they bit off too much for this holiday. Food was decent but some issues with managing this holiday event."

  • "I had the filet mignon and lobster tail. The filet mignon was so tender, it melted in your mouth. The food was served piping hot, which is how I like it. My date had the lobster risotto which was absolutely delicious! We sat on the covered patio overlooking the water. It was a fantastic Valentine's Day dinner."

  • "As with many restaurants The Canner held a Valentine's Day Prix Fixe dinner which offered I recall 6 starter dishes and 6 entre dishes, I chose the fish offering (similar to Chealan Sea Bass), and my date chose the Lobster Risotto. The fish meal was excellent the lobster a bit undercooked but still really tasty. This was our 2nd visit to the Cannery...we will most definitely be back for a nother romantic dinner."

  • "The new chef has introduced a menu that is so uninspired. I ordered Hamachi tuna tartare and it looked like some had sliced three small pieces of Hamamchi tuna and stuck them on a plate. Please bring back the old chef"

  • "Ambience was fabulous as usual. Service was a little slow, but in our waiters defense we were hesitant to order. My biggest complaint is that when we asked for a wine recommendation he pointed us to the most expensive bottle in the chardonnay section. We ordered the bottle to much regret as $76 is too rich for my blood. I will no longer ask for recommendations and instead choose a house chardonnay."

  • "Everything was good for our daughter in laws birthday. Server was a little different. Told us not to eat to much bread our we would get full before dinner. We ask for more bread anyway and she did not bring. At the end we ask again for more bread and she gave us a look like really? More bread? I think a little more training on staff communication with table would help."

  • "Coming here, you expect little when looking at the ambiance, and what appears to be a TGIFriday's crowd. But surprisingly, the service was attentive, and all six of our entrees of fish were wonderful, fabulous and appropriate sauces. Once you get over the ambiance, and the touristy neighborhood, it was a delight. Non-intrusive waiter, and welcoming."
