Diner Reviews
  • "What a gem this restaurant turned out to be. My friends and I stopped by for brunch at the restaurant after a short hike by the Carquinez strait. Seeing "Roadhouse" in the name, we didn't expected any service but instead were treated so well by all of the staff. We ordered crispy asparagus, chicken and waffles, and polenta with pork and tomatillo. Everything was delicious. I also love their attention to details (heavy silverware, fresh floral arrangements, stripe paper straws) The dining room and the patio was beautiful. I can't wait to go back and try their dinner service."

  • "After making a reservation 6 weeks in advance we waited 50 minutes and were stuck in their back room/patio. This is a room with metal tables and chairs that is mostly glassed in that is open to the outdoors during good weather. The acoustics is terrible and we were seated with a party of 8 that were well into celebrating. We could not even carry on a conversation at our table of 4. We were offered this same table 45 minutes earlier when is was " outdoors with a heater ". We were told it would be 15 minutes for a table in the dining room. We were not prepared to dine outdoors so we waited. We expected the main dining room. They just kept apologizing saying nobody would leave. The food and service was very good fortunately."

  • "Good food; cool part to the bay area, off the general path and with the feel of the olde west! One criticism: entrees are a bit small for the price."

  • "This place is worth visiting just to see Port Costa. It's a town that time forgot - right here in the Bay Area. The Bull Valley Road House is good - I wouldn't call it great. They are trying hard and are very friendly, service was good. The food is served family style but the portions are on the small side for sharing. Cocktails are all $12. and also on the small side. Prices are higher than I would have expected for a funky little place."

  • "Loved it, loved it……The bar tender even showed us how she made drinks, very friendly."

  • "Early Sunday dinner was our first visit to Bull Valley Roadhouse. The dining room was quiet when we were seated, but filled up with lots of groups. "Old fashioned" cocktails (updated versions of historic drinks) were very good. The sardine toasts and the risotto received high ratings. Fried chicken was good, as were the sides: mac & cheese, cauliflower. No decaf coffee is served (a disappointment for some in our party). The dining room was quite warm, but once a side door was opened it started to cool down. Street parking was full so we needed to park at the end of the road in a dirt/gravel parking lot with HUGE potholes. It seemed like it would be very difficult to navigate in the rain and/or the dark."

  • "Introduced another friend to BVR and had another excellent brunch experience. Service was very good and we enjoyed watching the new server/busboy who races to deliver food with a great smile on his face and seems to love doing this. Checken tenders were tasty but not as good as the fried chicken served previously. Loved the asparagus, but preferred the earlier version with a touch of chili. biscuits and gravy were soooo tasty - a little salty. strawberry mint spritzer was great, but preferred the ginger lime aid that was previously on the menu - which they were happy to bring us. We really enjoy this place."

  • "Friday evening 7:15 reservation. Arrived early, nice cocktail at the bar. Seated right away and ordered. Nice appetizer and salad then waited and waited for main course. Asked waitress several times if food was coming but didn't get much response except that it was coming. After more than 2 hours decided to leave, was given the ckeck for the appetizer and salad and left at 9:30. Very disappointed and doubt if we'll go back again."

  • "Located in the tiny town of Port Costa in an old Victorian hotel that has recently been refurbed, it's literally out in the middle of nowhere. After we navigated off of I-80, we ended up driving down a narrow bumpy road to park in a large unpaved lot at the water's edge. We made our way past the weekend bikers and were treated to one of the best brunches ever. The fried chicken and waffles were superb, as was the corned beef hash. The full bar offered all sorts of brunch cocktails but the wine list had some gems as well. Wouldn't want to navigate out of there in the dark, but this was a splendid addition to our weekend road trip."

  • "As always the food was great but will say the salted sardine starter was salty. However, sitting out in the lovely enclosed patio, while wonderful, raises the noise level beyond the 4 decibels. The best was the switch of the crispy green beans to crispy asparagus and the smoked trout salad was delicious. The risotto sublime and the St Louis ribs just right. Just a heads up; the fish entree or starter dishes are tasty but rarely deboned. So if you do not like to pick out bones, make sure to clarify whether or not the fish is filet."

  • "What a wonderful find - at the end of a little used road you just don't expect to find something so professionally operated with absolutely delicious and interesting food served in what they describe as family style. One of the best and most unusually stocked back bars in the bay area and a knowledgeable bar tender who is ready to help guide you thru the interesting and different bottled goodness. Several tables near us were couples having a great romantic dinner, while we were next to a family with children and a large group of men doing a dinner and wine tasting - everyone, including my wife and I had a great time. The service is very attentive. A designated driver is a must - this is a place not to be missed."

  • "It was our first visit to BVR and we will absolutely go back again and again. The food was amazing and the staff were wonderful. They made you feel welcomed like you were an old friend which is so rare these days. As soon as you step in the bar you are being taken back to a different era with the old photos on the walls and the eclectic furniture. Very fun! Everyone should experience this wonderful little gem!"

  • "Very good food, friendly, low key with nice vibe. It was mellow but certainly not dead for brunch. A great experience overall...casual, not uptight, but not ordinary."

  • "First of all, I have to say that this was our inaugural visit to the Bull Valley Roadhouse. It won't be the last. We arrived a bit early and opted to warm up by the fireplace in the bar to have a drink before heading into the the dining room. It has to be noted here that the ones we tasted where superb. In fact they where so good that we could not bring ourself to order wine with dinner but rather stayed with the perfectly executed mixes from the bar. All staff we interacted with were very knowledgeable, helpful and extremely pleasant!"

  • "We had a very enjoyable meal. the waitstaff was attentive without being in your face and the food was wonderful as was the ambiance. We did have to wait almost 20 minutes for a table even though we had reservations and arrived a little early. Other than that the only other failing is the wine list which i thought a little pricey and limited. But we will definitely return if only for special occasions as it is a little expensive for the area."

  • "Food service and venue was very good. I did not like the noise level, nor the "family Style" menu because it was confusing by which I mean not all entrees ordered were enough for sharing. The salad and chicken dinner was enough for sharing however the lamb which was a more expensive entrée was not. Either all should be or all should not, I think. Two small warm wash towels were given before the food, I understand that many would appreciate this, I don't I took a shower and dressed up to go out. Price point was on par with what I pay in SF. My Martini smallish. Happy that it is a better restaurant than much that is available in west coco county."

  • "Once again another memorable evening at the Bull Valley Roadhouse celebrating birthdays with old friends. If you have not yet made the journey over to Port Costa do so very soon and you will not be disappointed! Food, service, ambience just wonderful in this historic little town. The Burlington Hotel is now opened, so make a plan for a nice overnight stay."

  • "The Bull Valley Roadhouse is a total dining experience. It has so much character with it's decor. We went for brunch and the food was even better than it sounded. I had the cornmeal & rye waffle, bourbon carmel, Pink Lady apples, toasted pecan with whipped cream. The crispy Yolo County asparagus with saffron aioli was so good we know that will be ordered again next time. Even the Tangerine Ginger tea was very unique and wonderful. The food is to die for! We had a party of six and everyone had something different. We couldn't believe what a great meal we all had. Trevor was our server and he did a terrific job. We did wish the food came out around the same time. We will absolutely be back."

  • "I brought friends to celebrate a special occasion. We were immediately seated in a choice location then totally ignored. We made several attempts to get attention but finally had to hunt down a server to get drinks ordered which were slow in arriving. For the rest of the evening the service picked up but never attained the smoothness and professional level I have enjoyed on other occasions. I hope this is not the voice of the future as I have considered the Roadhouse a destination dinner place well worth the trek from Walnut Creek and would hate to see it slide."

  • "Invited friends to an anniversary dinner and arrived 30 minutes early to have cocktails at the bar but no one took our drink orders even though we asked three times. Never got cocktails but we ordered wine with dinner but our friend only got to drank half a glass because the busboy knocked it over shattering the glass in her lap and all over her and an expensive sweater. We had to shout to a waiter to bring her a towel. They started to pour her more wine but she waved them off and asked for a cup of coffee instead. After dessert we got the bill and were shocked to see that they not only charged her for the wine but also the coffee. Being treated this way leaves a bad taste in you mouth and it will be a while before we go back."

  • "Although somewhat pricey, the food at the Bull Valley Roadhouse is wonderful. You need to ask for bread, but it's worth the ask. The mixed green and beet salads were simply prepared, but very tasty. Dishes are meant to be shared and come out when they're ready. Particularly good was the fried chicken (best I've ever had) and rib eye steak. A smoked pork chop we ordered was very smokey, but a little dry. As far as sides, the brussel sprouts were awesome (again, best I've ever had), and the mashed potatoes and mac and cheese were also very good. Our service was a tad slow, but people were very friendly. It's also worth just stopping by for a drink at the bar. Quirky, rustic town with great photo ops."

  • "It was an adventure to get to the restaurant itself. We did not expect to go down a winding dark road that seemed to take us to nowhere. The dining experience was worthy of the road trip. Great service and attention to details. Hot hand towels, prompt refill of water and clearing of the empty plates. Everything we ordered was delicious. We plan on going back during the day to check out the scenery."

  • "The restaurant is out of the way but so worth it. We have been twice now and both times the food is exceptional. It is served family style which is great because you can taste so much more! We took a foodie from Chicago and he was a little confused about why we didn't go to SF but understood after dining here."

  • "I loved this restaurant! We were celebrating my Mom's 71st birthday and it was a wonderful evening. The decor has an old world charm. The food was excellent and the service was outstanding. We ordered the Steamed Mussels for an appetizer that came with garlic fries and an aioli sauce - I can't stop thinking about ordering these again. We enjoyed the family style portions and shared two entrees - the Fried Chicken and the Pork Stew between three of us. Both of our entree's were delicious! I can't wait to go back again and again and again."

  • "Bull Valley is our go to brunch spot. The restaurant is nestled in the hills of Contra Costa in the little pocket town of Port Costa. The service is out-standing. The food can be a bit un-even, but the over all experience is worth the drive. Try one of their out-standing cocktails. Enjoy!"

  • "Four of us went to dinner recently at Bull Valley Roadhouse, and had heard good things, but didn't quite know what to expect. We had a fantastic time, wonderful food of course, but mainly the service was extraordinary. From the first moment we came in and were told "Please make yourself at home", to asking if we'd like to hang out at the bar to have a drink, they would hold the table and we could come in when ever we wanted for dinner, to our wonderful waitress who expertly explained the menu to us. All good, and we left feeling so well taken care of! A different experience from most restaurants. We can't wait to come back."
