We welcome you to The Bank & Baron, reclaimed within The Bank of Nova Scotia building, which is recognized among one of Alberta's most historical. This grand space has been unlocked and a new downtown landmark awaits you.

The Bank of Nova Scotia is located in the heart of Calgary's infamous Stephen Avenue, the pulse of downtown. This avenue was named after George Stephen, 1st Baron Mount Stephen. He was the financial genius behind the creation of the Canadian Pacific Railway, the President of the Bank of Montreal and is remembered as one of the greatest philanthropists of his time. In honor of the significant history Baron Mount Stephen imparted into the fostering of Calgary's culture (1930 - present), we have brewed The Bank & Baron P.U.B.

  • "I visited the Bank & Baron for lunch with some female colleagues. The food was very good. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same about the service. It took several minutes for someone to come and get us drinks after we were seated. We then waited long periods of time in between getting our drinks and having someone come to the table so we could place our food order. After we finished eating, and our plates were cleared, no one stopped by our table at all. We had to flag down a waitress to get our bill. I will likely go back and give it another try because the service during previous experiences was much better. However, if the service is poor again it will likely be the last time I have lunch there."

  • "Used the reservation system and requested a patio table. Arrived to check in to hear the hostess tell a walk in customer that she was getting the last patio table. Didn't think much as I assumed that there was still the reserved table for my party. NOPE. had to sit near the bar on the main aisle. No sense using Open table for this establishment."

  • "Came with a larger group reservation one day after work and it was a nice day out so we asked to be seated on the patio. Although she explained larger parties like that couldn't be accommodated on the patio, she could have been more professional. We were told we could try but "would have to deal with the consequences" which I found rather unpleasant. Our group basically went outside ourselves to see if we could shift some tables but were unsuccessful. We ended up sitting inside because of the particular hostess' behaviour regarding the situation which left things on a slightly sour note. On a more positive note, our waitress was really pleasant and friendly and everyone enjoyed the food that was ordered."

  • "This was my first visit and will definitely not be my last. I work downtown and went for lunch. The patio was great for a hot sunny day, and the chicken quinoa salad is fantastic! I look forward to seeing how the inside is and trying out more items on the menu."

  • "Went there as a last minute choice with guests from out of town. Walked in and was very impressed with the architecture. Restaurant was very nicely restored. Was not impressed with the drink offerings at the pub as they had no corona or any other light beer. Then waitress hadn't heard of a daiquiri.(waitress explained she wasn't a drink connoisseur). Menu was fairly limited but more upscale than we were looking for. Mostly appetizers, which were good. We shared don air nachos and calamari which tasted excellent but was mostly batter crumbs. Overall, more show than go."

  • "The "sorry I am new" blonde waitress was not very helpful. How could u not know the specials of the day interms of drinks and appies and then show no initiative to find out. Honestly, partaking a little interest in what your company is promoting will say a lot about you and the company. A little brains go a long way. The food was good the first few times I went there. But as a returning customer, my experience this time around was not the least impressive. The wings were under cooked and part of it was still bleeding and the waitress was horrible. I don't think I'll come back again."

  • "The food at this place is really good. The mushroom bisque is amazing, if it is served to you. The food is timed poorly so you are getting your appetizers when the main is coming. Trying to get a waitress to get you anything is hard if you are female as they are all flirting with the male tables. I like the food and I like the building it is in but I really do not like the service and will probably not go back."

  • "Our experiencewas mediocre to say the least. The food was average, nothing special. The flat bread, which advertised goat cheese, came loaded with mozza. Our server was difficult to find and was not attentive. We were less than impressed and likely won't be back. Overall for a restaurant on Stephen Ave, facing lots of competition, the Bank and Baron will need to step up their service and quality."

  • "How bad are the servers? Here's an example: I ordered a margarita. Our server came back to the table and said, "I'm sorry but our bartenders don't make margaritas." She was dead serious. After a moment of silence I showed our server a promo poster on our table (on all the tables & their website) inviting customers to come in for MARGARITA MONDAYS! Our server said, "Oh, I'll check into that" after several minutes she came back to the table with a margarita and said "Sorry, I guess we do." It was a lime margarita. I asked for a strawberry. We left shortly after."

  • "First time here, we were there for a work function. Firstly we were told that the restaurant doesn't take reservations but on open table I was able to make a reso, annoying. We called the morning of our reso to add more to our party & were told they couldn't accommodate us! In the end they did. My Spinach/Duck Confit Salad was very nice and a good size. Another co-worker enjoyed the burger. Others at my table did not fare as well. The steak sandwich had ALOT of horseradish on it, which was not mentioned on the menu. While the other salads were bland and overpriced. We all agreed that this was not a place we would be back to."

The special came out the fastest and while we tried to wait, we ended up starting... the end groups food (2 people) came out and the last person had to wait about 20 mins from the first food drop. Food was good however, so that helped. we could see the kitchen staff not looking very busy or concerned so it might not be advantageous to have an open kitchen in this scenario."

  • "We reserved a table for a nice Friday lunch. It took over ten minutes for a server to even come take a drink order. When we did get to order, the first two beer we selected were out of stock. Shortly after we received our drinks the waitress came by to not take our food orders but to take the beer menu off our table and give it to another group as they did not have enough menus for their tables. Our food was slow to arrive and had made it to three tables before it finally arrived at ours. The food was cold and unappetizing."

  • "This is the fourth time back to the Bank and Baron since it opened and I still enjoy the decor and the ambience. The servers are great, very upbeat & make the visit enjoyable, memorable and in a very big way - keep the customers coming back. The food menu is a little sparse and could do with a little more variety - I only say that because I seem to always want something that is not on the menu and seem to settle for an alternate to what I am really craving. That said, the food is great and I can't criticize the quality, quantity or flavour - just the selection. Everybody would enjoy a visit to this restaurant and they now have the patio opened - but in good weather you will have to be lucky enough to get a seat."

  • "Got here early on a weekend and were allowed to sit wherever we want. The place is beautiful and food is fabulous for a pub stature. We went to the place with an open mind about the service because we always try to give the benefit of the doubt for "new-ish" places and we tend to agree on what has been said so far. We were not in a hurry so the slow service (or lack of service) was forgivable but overall, it just didn't "wow" us. Honestly, I hope they don't end up like the "west bar/restaurant" that folded sooner than it can take off. Might give it a chance another time but not excited to see them soon again."

  • "I had 2 clients out for lunch and the service was embarrassing... we arrived at 11:50 am and didn't get our bill until close to 2 pm. We waited sooo long for two burgers and a salad. The salad had spinach, a few apple slices and pumpkin seeds comprising the portion of a small side salad. I was starving by the time I got back to the office and had to order out some food!! Great ambience but i'd never go back for lunch."
