  • "Tried The Admiral last year for my birthday and loved it. This time, the food was just pretty good with the notable exception of the Mussels which were fantastic. There was also a small lobster risotto served with the scallops which could stand as a fabulous dish on it's own. Flank steak was tasty but my husband only ordered it because they were already out of the Duck Confit . I tasted his Miso soup starter which was only ok but a huge disappointment after last year's out of this world carrot soup. Our server was lovely and helped pick a very nice wine after the one I wanted only came in half bottles. Same as last year, the dessert list was inventive but I was looking for something droolingly good and it wasn't there. Almost great."

While service was a tad bit slow at times the drinks were amazing, food was so different than most other places. And wine selections was greeat!! I had the skirt steak and substituted tater tots for collards without an issue. The steak was cooked perfectly as we're the sides of kale and collards. The perfect dish accompanied by a great Tempranillo wine. Would definitely visit again when in Asheville."

  • "I met up with one of my friends in Asheville for a weekend and I had heard about this place so I made a reservation a week beforehand. We went on a Friday night around 9pm and found a really cute almost dive bar vibe. I mean that in the best way possible, but it was unexpected after looking at the menu. Now the food was amazing, we ended up getting 4 small plates, which was a bit much, the small plates were larger than expected. We got the duck leg, mussels, tartare, and pork belly and they were all excellent. All of the dishes had amazing flavors and our Dark and Stormy's were nice and gingery too! I definitely recommend this place just make a reservation and order less food than you normally would."

It's a small restaurant and, helping each other out on almost everything, they provide the atmosphere of a family. Much friendlier and conscientious than those in, e.g., Posana Cafe."

  • "The setting in this restaurant is very casual, the food is anything but. The only way to do it right is to order several dishes from the menu and share with your companion. The dishes are the perfect size for sharing with a date, and are some of the best flavor combinations I have experienced. The staff is very attentive and the service is well thought out. The servers team up and make the evening flawlessly flow. If you're looking for a place for an intimate night or just a night out with friends, this is the place for any occasion.   • "Stuffed dates were a perfect balance of sweet and savory. meat (duck and chicken) and fish (sea bass) cooked to perfection with interesting sauces and a nice mix of vegetables and salads. Enough food to enjoy without feeling stuffed. We were also able to try several small plates and share them. Service continues to be friendly and attentive. Food is interesting and imaginative as well as beautifully presented. I look forward to returning to what is a favorite place to eat. We aim to eat early and usually find a table that way."

  • "Our reservation was for Saturday night at 8:00 pm. Although we had to make the reservation quite a while in advance, it was worth waiting for. The dinner was terrific- I had scallops and two people had the Striped Bass- both dishes were divine. Then, as I hoped, the tables were removed and the music started. My only disappointment was that the music was not at all danceable! It seemed like they were playing the B side of some strange albums. There was a nice crowd, but only two people were dancing. We listened for a while and then decided the music wasn't going to get any better and left. But overall a great experience. I would go back on a Saturday night and hope for better music."

Attentive service, but not hovering is good, and of course the most important thing is delicious food. There is usually an item on the menu that requires explaination of ingredients, and is tempting. The only complaint I have is the difficulity of finding parking. It is bad!"

We each ordered apps and entrees and each of us was very pleased with our meals. I got the scallops which were absolutely to die for.   • "My recent visit to The Admiral was my second trip. The first trip was more positive, even though it was a noisy, crowded Saturday night and we ate at the bar. This trip was for an early reservation on a weeknight. We were told that the head chef was cooking and that we could expect a special rendering of the menu items. The most positive impression was the artistic presentation of the scallop entree. It was worthy of painting and framing. The cold green pea soup was a bright green background for the seared (on one side) scallops. The carrot foam was fascinating. It made for a spectacular presentation. The pea soup and foam were both fairly tasteless. The slightly off flavored scallops rested on a dab of tasty risotto. Flan was nice."

One must be prepared for the location and the challenges it provides - limited parking, not a large dining area. Would have rated them even better up to the end of the evening - enjoying conversation and coffee and were approached and asked if we were done as another party had been waiting for a table for some time. Basically - you are done eating and thus get out. Not a way to end the evening or make one excited about coming back again."
