A word from Ten
The Japanese word ten can mean "heaven", "above" or "celebration" and the dining experience at TEN modern Japanese restaurant is all of these things.

TEN approaches traditional Japanese dishes as if they were works of modern art. The superior ingredients are the building blocks of inspiration and the plates are crafted to please both the palate and the eye. Superior products are used and the seafood arrives daily from fishing auctions in Japan and Hawaii. Beyond the incredibly fresh sushi, the menu features a variety of hot and cold ala carte items and offers many choices for vegetarians as well as non-seafood eaters.

The bar menu boasts an extensive list of Sake, carefully selected in conjunction with specialty importers and a prominent Sake sommelier. Ten also features an extensive wine list, and specialty cocktails using unique ingredients such as the "Ten" which is comprised of sake, vodka, aloe juice, and sweet Japanese plums.

TEN is a hot spot in Charlottesville, boasting modern Japanese cuisine and style. It's a pricey restaurant but if you know that going in, it's a worthy place to dine. Do your taste buds a favor and get the avocado tempura!

We came to Charlottesville for a little getaway. Decided to try TEN based on Yelp! reviews. So glad we did! Such a wide variety. We had the calamari tempura and wagyu beef skewers - outstanding and so flavorful. We also enjoyed a wasabi roll based on our waiter's recommendation. 3 different types of wasabi and not too spicy - very fresh! The highlight, however, was the TEN Hamachi in ponzu butter. We ordered it twice - one of the best japanese dishes we've ever had. Reminds us of a similar dish from NoBu in NYC but it's better!!!! The black cod was phenomenal as well! Don't miss this spot - best sushi we've had in a long time!!!!

Bit of a disappointment - I understand it's C'ville, but if you're going to charge high quality prices, I expect high quality! Some of the fish was very good, but the Oh-toro was a bit fishy tasting and not worth the $8 price tag per piece. Service was VERY slow - at one point we waited about 25 minutes for 4 pieces if nigiri- and our waiter studiously avoided us the whole time ! Cool decor - that was the most outstanding part. The omakAse was a joke - they just picked 5 things off the menu and brought it- omakase should highlight the freshest stuff they have.... We could have just ordered that stuff off the menu. Would not return

Best sushi by far. Lobster tempura is worth the trip form Scottsville, but the shiso plum cucumber rolls and the sometimes incredible oh toro are worth a drive from DC. Excellent sake menu, even better martinis. This is the place I go to pretend I am back in NYC. And if you are having friends in from NYC, it's here or Mas unless you want to embarrass yourself. And this place is far less busy, much quieter and calmer for the same amount of money. Great ambiance, usually very good severs, and most importantly very fresh high quality fish. That is why you pay the extra money.

I operate CORK & FORK Epicurean Travel and send clients all over the world on culinary travel programs that include great dining. I've been around. Ten is awesome. Great ambiance (very unique in Cville). I feel like I'm in SOHO NYC. Service is always quite good. The Tuna rice bowl with avocado is awesome and we always, always get the haricots vert tempura with some sort of remoulade - best $8 small plate in town! I'm a rice afici0nado and their rice is superb. They have a thoughtful wine list which pair well with Asian flavors. I had a Riesling (Washington State) that was nice and dry and paired perfectly with our dishes. Only side comment is that we felt slightly rushed by our server, who otherwise was quite attentive.

Overall everything about the food, service, ambiance, and general dining experience was very good. It was expensive, however, and an EXTREMELY ANNOYING/DISRUPTIVE feature is that your debit/credit card has to have a certain minimum for them to use. E.g. I was treating another person and our total came to $106 and my card had $148 in checkings but it got DECLINED. I then had to go on my phone and transfer $100 from saving for it to go through. Extremely annoying policy/feature they should DEFINITELY CHANGE OR AT LEAST LET YOU KNOW.

The food here is fabulous. So many choices and it's all delish. It's our "go to" in C'ville. Sushi is always very fresh and the rice dishes are very filling, good for a meal in itself. We always order too much food, because it's all sooooo yummy! Drink menu is quite good also. Service is always, meh. The waiters are never very pleasant.

Service was lacking--hostess didn't even greet us with a hello, watched as I struggled to pull out the very heavy chair without offering to help, waiter was aloof and slow. Sauces were heavy-handed with sauce. And when did sake start being served in a wine glass?

My wife and I went to Ten for restaurant week in Charlottesville. The three course menu had some excellent selections in each group. We had the fried chicken wings and the Kurobuta wontons as our first courses - succulent and a little spicy. Then we had a tiger roll (steamed tiger shrimp, avocado and eel sauce) and a Hotate roll (scallops and jalapeno) - both delicious. And finally hanger steak with blue crab and tuna Tatake with crushed avocado. Everything was superb - very subtle seasonings and flavor/texture combinations. My wife did the wine pairings with her three dishes but we didn't think they were very good pairings. The one irritating thing was the gnats that kept buzzing around our table.

The sushi at TEN (which is all I ordered) is amazing! Each course had unique and creative flavors, and the presentation is beautiful. The sushi/sashimi portions are on the small side but the overall meal was fantastic! I love TEN's decor, something between old hollywood nightclub and modern loft style.

For the most part, the fish was overpowered by sauces and spices. Jalapenos and butter with raw fish does not bring out the flavor; it hides it. The omakase sushi, a more traditional dish was much better.

Ten is a sushi restaurant. My husband loves sushi and I hate it. But we both loved our dinners. This was the first sushi restaurant I have been to that had more than a deep friend tempura and rice as the alternative to sushi. I had amazingly flavorful harachi beef with Miso sauce, a delicious salad with ginger dressing, and edamame. Very delicious and satisfying. And the three people I was dining with all enjoyed their sushi immensely!

I absolutely love this restaurant. I have been here many times, and the food has always been spectacular. However, I can't help but be rather annoyed every time me and my significant other have been seated at the awkward 2-person tables in the middle. He is a fairly large man, and he looks visibly uncomfortable sitting at a small table. Even on a week night when the restaurant is close to empty, we have been sat at those tables. It is painfully awkward when you ask to move and the hostess tells you the other tables are "reserved" for a party that apparently never shows up. Food is great, seating is HORRIBLE.

Thankfully we had a booth. There are now tiny tables for two crammed into the aisle between the banks of booths which hamper diners and wait staff and offer no privacy for the hapless diners who end up there. The miso soup was refreshing yet substantial, the chef's selection of sushi was a delight - melt-in-the-mouth succulence, the calamari tempura a winner as always. We agreed that the chicken teriyaki was ho-hum. The rice bowl was delicious. One of the best places to dine in Charlottesville.

I dined at Ten for the first time recently, despite having lived in and around C'ville for a long time - and had to ask myself why I had waited so long! The food was outstanding, and the portions average to generous. The service was excellent - attentive, friendly, helpful and reserved all at once. The sushi was fresh, and the selection adequate - a good range of "standard" selections, and a few gems (like fresh sea urchin, monkfish liver, and marinated tuna). Ten's sake selection is amazing - and the variety is superb. The decor is elegant and airy (they've got 20ft ceilings...), without being uncomfortable. We reserved a table, and I would recommend asking for a booth if you can. One tiny downside - the price tag is a bit rich, too...
