Diner Reviews
  • "Food was fantastic. Roxanne was excellent and provided great service to our party of 11. Best fish and chips I've had outside of Cape Cod."

  • "We took some of our new outside sales reps to have a relaxed dinner. Food was good. Service was great...Roxeanne had a great attitude and sense of humor. Lighting isn't the best. We had to use our cell phones' light to read the menu. But overall, even though it was a quiet Monday night, we had a good time."

  • "Went with my fiancée and had the best time!! Great service, amazing food (recommend the seafood platter!!) and a free shot!! Paired with Bota Bota made for an amazing evening!!!"

  • "Old Mtl is a location of restaurant extremes - very wonderful, rather formal and expensive like 400 Coups, to very touristy and very ordinary (and usually expensive as well). Taverne Gasper was a pleasant experience. The food was good and casual, the service attentive, the decor attractive and the bill was reasonable. You don't go for the wine list, but the selection of beers was appropriate for a taverne."

  • "Not only was the food and service great, but being a party of 16, it was nice to be able to order what you wanted off the menu rather than ordering from a group menu, which a lot of restaurants do. Definitely recommend this resto!"

  • "J ai entendu parler de vous au guide resto voir et je n ai pas été déçu de mon expérience . Nourriture et service excellent . Je le recommande et j y retournerai !"

  • "Tried this restaurant for the first time. Vibrant warm atmosphere and nice décor. The service by Mathieu, was excellent! He was there when needed with a big smile. The food was good. The home made fries are yummy. We had Salmon tartar and ribs, they were okay."

  • "It was busy (friday night) with good music, though slightly loud, and gave the place a feel between a hip bar and a rustic resto. We waited a bit longer than normal for our meals but thankfully had drinks. The cocktails were good, the beer a bit pricey but good selection. The menu seemed like classy versions of pub food and varied gastronomic choices. We had the duck confit poutine as an entree to share - it was delicious but quite salty. I had sausages and potatoes - I kind of expected it to be fancier than it was, very simple, but it was pretty good. Other people in my group had salmon tartare, scallops (which looked fantastic) and pulled pork burger. They all said, pretty tasty, 4 stars. I'd go again to try other items in the menu."

  • "The quality if the food vs the price is what I disliked the most, very mediocre, American size portion so you pay for quantity not quality. For over 100$ for 2 ppl without drinks, there's a ton of better places in the same area."

  • "We were very happy with our recent experience at Taverne Gaspar. Our waitress was lovely, the food was great, and their selection of beers, wines and cocktails was extensive. I do recommend getting a reservation, as there were people waiting at the door for seats as we were leaving. It also got progressively louder as the night went on, which can be expected when you have such a packed place. Go and try it out!"

  • "Food was ok but nothing special. Good if you want ribs. I had the salmon which was very blah and kinda dry. Ambiance is good. Kind of place you go for a beer or glass of wine if you're in the Old Port and you're dressed casual and you want ambiance. Personally, I would not go back."

  • "the ambiance was great! Loved the place and service. Food was good however some of the ingredients (like the sauce for the fries or burgers) have no taste. I like the facts that the waitress was making some recommendations"

  • "all in all it was a good experience. staff is very friendly and accomodating with fast service. the decor is very nice as well.. as for food, .. i had a salmon tartar, which I was not crazy about.. I find it did not taste much, and a burger with a jim bean sauce which was very good. My friends had the ribs which were very tasty and tender."

  • "We decided to go to Gaspar at the last minute for a Sunday evening dinner. Calm ambiance, friendly service. Food was better than what I was expecting for a bar/pub style restaurant. Salmon tartar was very good, Gaspar lager beer was also very good. Our entire party was pleased with their meals (2 of us had a burger and fries, 1 had the mac and cheese). Overall good experience, and will definitely go back."

  • "I had the opportunity to try with friends 3 restaurants so far during the 2014 Food happening and I believe this might of been the best so far. The ambiance is nice, live band on Wednesday and friendly service. The waiter was a bit clumsy but had good intentions. They did not have the dessert that I wanted which was a disappointment (pana cota) since the small chocolate cake seemed tasteless and bland. The parsnip puree was however amazing and hearty which was followed by a delectable burger. My friends tartar was also delicious and fresh...however her Mac N Cheese was boring and lacked of flavor. II would potentially give the restaurant a 2nd chance to see if the food would meet my greater expectations."

  • "Went here for dinner with my fiance for dinner tuesday night. Appetizers were great. Had oysters and soup that was on special, maybe artichoke? Soup was very tasty. Main courses were average-good, nothing special. We had got the burger and mac and cheese. Mac and cheese was a bit greasy. Fries were very tasty. Service from waitress was okay until we tried to get our check. Place wasn't even busy and it took us sitting there, clearly finished for 30 minutes before she brought it over. Would probably not go back if I was in Montreal again, unless just to go to the bar there as the cocktails were good."

  • "This was my second time at this restaurant and I went this time for the event «Happening Gourmand». The food was well presented and good. This is a place for confort food and it didn't disapoint."

  • "Went there with my wife for Happening Gourmand menu. Delicious tartare, lobster rolls. Mac & cheese and rib entrees amazing as well."
    Dined on 1/20/2014
  • "The entrées were enjoyed by most of us (guédilles d'homard and salmon tartare were appreciated). However, we were all quite disappointed with our mains (a steak that should have been medium-well was on the burnt side and very tough, a macaroni and cheese and burger with little flavour, dry sausages). Although the salmon and ribs were enjoyed by my friends. We arrived at the restaurant by 7:45 and didn't leave till 11:30. The service was very slow. I was also unpleasantly surprised when I was practically tossed my hot plate of mac n'cheese without a warning as to how hot the plate would be. The ambience was nice and the decor was nice but unfortunatley that's the only positive thing I could say about this."

  • "Great restaurant, particularly for happening gourmand. Very very filling, you will NOT be hungry at the end of your meal. Great desserts. BBQ bacon burger is delicious. Ribs are a bit less recommended, but still good!"

  • "service was excellent drink: bourbon lemonade and a Gaspar lager both good choices. Appetizer: charcuterie, good but not stellar. It came with prosciutto, genoa, sopprasseto, pickled onions and gherkins. Few Crostinis but the waitress gave us plenty of warm bread. Mains: steak frites: the meat was cooked to perfection, buttery and perfectly salted. Ribs: Jim beam sauce was delicious not Smokey as I usually like but still very flavorful the portion was HUGE two massive racks, It came with coleslaw which was basic with not much flavor, just Vinegar? I wasn't sure where the house butter was supposed to go... Weird with fries... Would ruin the rib sauce in my opinion and definitely shouldn't go in the coleslaw... Lol! Too full for dessert!"

  • "This is the third time that my husband and I have been to this restaurant. We've enjoyed every experience. Also the food was ready very quickly this time!"

  • "Hosting out of town guests I figured that this gorgeous eatery in a great location could offer a great brunch, but I was VERY disappointed. The portions were minuscule, the potatoes they offered as an accompaniment were a handful of french fries which they declared homemade. Fine, but advise guests that their eggs come with fries. The coffee was lukewarm and given the attention to decor, it was misleading in terms of the food quality that would follow. For dinner this place is great, but breakfast is DEFINiTELY not a forte. The best part, the Montreal bagels provided by a local bakery and not made in house - the sole welcome offering. I would STRONGLY dissuade anyone from eating breakfast here. Your $15 per plate is better spent elsewhere."

  • "My husband and I ate dinner at Taverne Gaspar on Christmas Eve, and it couldn't have been more perfect. Charming and attentive service, inventive cocktails, a great wine selection and superlative food. My organic salmon steak on a bed of puy lentils was moist and delicious, and my husband's filet migon in Bordelaise sauce was so tender you could almost cut it with a fork. We will definitely go back."

  • "We dined at Taverne Gaspar on Christmas Eve as we were staying in the hotel next door Auberge Vieux-Port (which is also wonderful). The food was really good and the service was excellent, all of the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The restaurant had a really relaxed atmosphere and everything was perfect."

  • "Nice spot for dinner - our server was very knowledgeable about the menu and local specialties. The room is lovely: stone walls, high ceiling, low lighting, large windows onto the street. Food was good - burger was large, fish and chips crispy. Excellent fries. Very lively bar scene - loud but fun. Would recommend."

  • "A nice discovery. The Wednesday night carnivore special, which includes a glass of wine, was lamb shank. One of the best I've ever had, flavourful and tender. The live music added to a wonderful evening. The place is lovely as well. We'll definitely go back but will avoid the tourist season as the location must draw a lot of them."

  • "Great night! Good service, delicious food and drink, not pretentious. Very good place for a group or a birthday. I recommend te ribs and a group of flaming shots! Quite a show. Drinks are a little expensive and waitress mislead us about the wine. Was delicious but 20$ more expensive than she said it would be. Excellent overall"

  • "Looking for somewhere to go in Old Montreal with ambiance, good service and good food? This is the place. Conveniently located, seems to be popular with the locals and the staff our friendly and welcoming. The food was great as was the service and the neighborhood can't be beat."

  • "The environment was cosy, the temperature of the restaurant was good, and the food was really tasty. The food was really tasty and the noise level was good. Overall very nice dinner! The only almost downside is that they tried to seat us at the door (literally) underneath the coat rack. When we asked to sit somewhere, they brought us to the back which was much nicer."

  • "It was my first time and I loved the ambiance. The lady who served us was excellent in answering out questions. We offered to have desert at the bar because they were expecting a very large group and were a little rushed to set up. They did not say a word to rush us or make us feel pressured to finish our meal in anyway but when we offered they were so grateful. We had dinner in the lounge of the auberge which was super comfy and quaint right beside the wince cellar and facing the port it was quite peaceful. The cheesecake with fig Coulis was absolutely to die for!!! I very much enjoyed and will be returning without a doubt!!"
