Diner Reviews
  • "Much quieter on Sunday evening despite outdoor seating completely full. Food is always outstanding, fun drinks, everyone is friendly. Hadn't been for a while but need to start going back again. Never disappointed."

  • "Do not bother using open table to book, you still must call to confirm, you could just call initially to book, annoying."

  • "The slight changes to the shrimp tacos didn't diminish their flavor... these are amazing, with a homemade tortilla, sriracha foam, and tasty guacamole. We also loved the mole quesadilla and, as usual, the lobster mac & cheese. I've never tried something I don't like at Tamari!"

  • "Food is always reliable and the server we had was awesome! Attention to every request and monitored our needs nicely throughout. Always enjoy my dining experience here and their attempt to meet dietary restrictions/preferences - i.e. gluten free."

  • "I made an online reservation for a table for the five members of my family to celebrate my son's graduation, and while I couldn't get the time we wanted, I figured it was worth it to ensure that we had a nice table. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed to find that we were seated at the back of the sushi bar section, an area that turned out to be very chaotic and noisy, and a real comedown from the much nicer upstairs section. It struck me that we would have been better off just showing up at the time we had wanted to be there anyway, and waiting for a table to open up, since i can't imagine anyone choosing to sit where we were placed. For a very expensive meal, this wasn't a terribly pleasant experience."

  • "great Sushi! And I am a sushi snob! Service was par excellence!"

  • "The family celebrated my son's graduation from high school here and had a fabulous meal. My 18 year-old picked this restaurant based on good memories from about four years ago when my husband and I had celebrated our anniversary here. Our server was well versed in every aspect of our meal including a "strong" cocktail for my husband. Have the pork shank! I will be returning sooner than another four years. Thank you for an awesome meal."

  • "The ambiance and autmosphere were excellent. I would certainly recommend ordering the fish but not the steak. I had calamari and sushi and they were great. I would go back to Tamari for its Sushi. But my date's steak was a bit too tender and the potatos didn't seem fresh. "

  • "I prefer the lunch menu over the dinner menu. You can choose a few smaller portion items and smaple each one. I wish you offered that for dinner."
    Dined on 5/27/2014
  • "We had great service, but were both ill about an hour after leaving. Not sure I would go back other than for outdoor drinks. Has potential, but I'm scared off since both of us had sour stomachs. "

  • "we had a great time! too bad there was jalapeño all over my margarita glass, which ended up in my eye… otherwise it was great! food was excellent!"

  • "We went on a beautiful Friday evening. I've been here before but when requested outdoor seating realized there was an awesome backyard deck with great views of the city. This place isn't inexpensive but the food was fantastic and service was great. I would recommend making reservations if possible."

  • "It's really a 4.5 but that's not a choice. We dined in the outdoor garden. There is a bit of street noise (Butler is busy) but it wasn't too much for conversation. The food was interesting and delicious. We had the grilled escarole, the quesadillas and the robota sampler. It was all delicious-- can't choose a favorite. Service was good though the waitress seemed busy handling the whole garden area. No complaints though-- she was knowledgeable and attentive enough. Try it--if you like food you won't be disappointed."

  • "we were visiting Pittsburgh, came across Tamari. Had a wonderful time. Jalapeneo margarita was great. We had several small plates. Lobster, calamari, salmon roll all were excellent. "

  • "Normally the dinner entrees are fantastic. Apparently they changed the menu options recently, and I tried the Flank Steak with a side of mushrooms instead of the potato confit. Unfortunately the steak was very chewy, and the tomato sauce/relish that it was served with simply didn't blend well. Being a $26 meal, I think that they could've managed a better cut of beef. Everything else we had was great though. "

  • "The food here is just too good, was trying to come here for a long time but always ended up somewhere else. Went with my husband on his birthday and the food was good, service was amazing and the dessert is a must try. Will definitely come bk soon :)"

  • "Roger Li is so innovative and never fears to change his menu regularly. We had the old standby clams.ri, but with a lovely new tomato base sauce. The beans, kale and asparagus was enhanced with smoky bacon...excellent new addition. The mole on the chicken quesadilla was awesome with hints if cinnamon, allspice and cloves..not to be missed. Sorry my appetite could not include more!"

  • "I've been here on several occasions now, and have never been anything less than impressed. The food is incredible, some of the best to be had in the 'burgh. Their cocktails are great, and some change seasonally as well, giving you new options (try 'House of the Rising Sun'...I think that one's a mainstay...basil in a drink, mmm!) The staff is very attentive, as an example, my date dropped her knife, and within 30 seconds, the owner came around from the kitchen with a new knife on a platter for her. He was able to tell which utensil to bring by the sound it made hitting the floor...talk about being an attentive host! Anyway, if you've never tried it I highly encourage you do, you won't be disappointed!"

  • "Service at Tamari is great. The muscles are outstanding and you can't go wrong with their sushi. Also love their small plates. Be sure to try the Tamari-tini or any other cocktail. Romantic and swanky setting. Will be back soon!!!"

  • "Attentive wait staff, food prepared creatively and was very flavorful. Reasonable corkage fee. We sat outside, and there was sufficient cover over the patio so we were comfortable. The larger menu wasn't available, ad we couldn't order some of our favorites. However, the food we had was flavorful and well done. We will be back!"

  • "I really don't like seafood, and the few times I've tried sushi in the past have been less-than-pleasant. We tried a bunch of different small plates from the tapas menu and loved everything that came to the table - even stuff that I know I normally hate, like tuna tartare. The food is so good here that it makes me like things I'd never eat otherwise. The service was also really nice - attentive but not intrusive. Our waiter was extremely professional. The evening was so enjoyable - we'll definitely be back."

  • "Love, love, love this place. I have never had a bad meal. Service is always fantastic and the food is amazing. I even have a shellfish allergy so sushi is a toss up for me, but they are so good about allergies here that I never have to worry. I just let the waitress/waiter know ahead of time and they double check everything!"

  • "Everything single thing we ordered--from the wine to the small plates to entre was so flavorful and thoughtfully prepared. We were unrushed, though it took us time to settle in and make decisions. Our questions were answered with friendliness and service was attentive. You have to try: grilled quail eggs, grilled romaine salad, tuna tacos, chorizo tacos, asian sea bass,...I have to go back to try many other interesting looking offerings."

  • "This is a favorite restaurant of ours. The services is impeccable, the wait staff is knowledgeable and friendly, and the food is awesome! One really cool thing about it is that there are mostly small plates for sharing, so you come away from the meal satisfied but not stuffed to the brim and also this way you get to sample a lot more funky dishes. Love it. Can't wait to go back."

  • "It was our 2nd visit for brunch and the food continues to be inspiring and absolutely delicious. The entire staff is friendly and takes time to discuss the various options available. A definite must do for brunch in Pittsburgh!"

  • "Good sushi is hard to find in Pittsburgh. Tamari had better sushi than almost every place I've tried in the city."

  • "The meals my date and I had were great. Our waiter was also great."

  • "Really cool atmosphere, it feels like it's in an old house and has both an upstairs and downstairs. The sushi is very good but some of the specialty rolls were pricey compared to more of the standard rolls and individual pieces. If you are going to have a drink and leave full then you're going to spend at least $40/person if not more."

  • "Sushi and short rib were great! They were also accommodating to our needs."

  • "We have dined here 4 times. All 4 times the food is excellent. We always secure a seat at the counter. However, our last time here we sat at a table because the counter was already reserved. The service was horrible. We were forgotten multiple times by our waitress. In the middle of our dining, we asked to move to the counter which was completely open. We finished our dinner at the counter, watching them prepare the food and the service was exceptional, (how it had always been). I don't think we will ever sit at a table here again."

  • "I loved Tamari! The food was excellent and the drinks were great too! I started out with the Jalepeno Margarita, and all I can say is WOW! We got the sampler next, and I loved the sauces, especaially the one with the cilantro. We then got the calamari, which had their great pico salsa on top, great combo. The sushi was next and it was everything that I had expected. Everything was reasonably priced as well. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone!!"

  • "Tamari has officially become our place to go for a nice meal out. I love the sushi, but all the food is amazing. They are able to layer so many flavors and keep them all balanced. However, this time we had a little surprise. Being a fan of Zombie movies, I had to order this new drink called, I believe, Dead Man Walking. Well, while the tequila and blood orange are the main ingredients, there were many others mixed in as well. I've enjoyed drinks here before, but this one was a categorical step up. When our waitress returned, I told her I hadn't had a drink that good since Embury on the strip closed several years ago. She smiled and said, that's because Spencer Warren from Embury designed it. :) Keep it up Tamari, you know we will be back."

  • "We take our daughters out for Valentine's Day every year and like to try recommended restaurants. Don't get me wrong, the food was good. It was just less than expected. We eat at a lot of nice places and we like very flavorful food. It was good but not outstanding. The short ribs were very good. The sushi was good. The fried rice was not what I expected at all and was very dry and not very flavorful. Would we go back again, probably not. We do not mind paying good money for great food but it just fell a little short. Waiter was excellent. No real complaints just a little lacking on overall wow-ness."

  • "We went for my wife's birthday. The food was great and we loved the menu. There were multiple options though and our server really helped us out. The food was a little slow coming out and there weren't many people there. However, the food was fantastic. I would definitely recommend it."

  • "This was our 3rd or 4th visit to Tamari, and it never fails to delight. Each "small bite" has a distinctive taste, and the cumulative dining experience is always exciting. If you have a hungry group, it can get expensive to feed everyone, but Tamari is perfect for a light, interesting, and delicious meal."

  • "Great cocktails and inventive food. Would not be out of place in New York or Chicago. The food is really oriented more towards sharing than individual meals, so keep that in mind when planning your dinner."
    Dined on 1/29/2014
  • "Do be fair, we were only there to do a bunch of small plates, so we didn't sample entrees of the sushi. That said, I expect a lot of unique flavors from Asian/Fusion small plates, and we both found those flavors lacking. The best one was a pulled pork quesadilla, which I don't really consider Asian anyway. My fish taco was fishy (and, to their credit, they didn't charge us) and the skewers were, again, "just OK". Lots of good reviews here, so it may just be that we aren't sushi lovers, so didn't get their best offerings."
