Diner Reviews
  • "Over the years my dining experiences at Tam's have been great. BUT for our last visit, it did not go well. Two of us at the table ordered the day's special (aged rib-eye) which turned out to be underwhelming - a premium price for a terrible meal. The rib-eye tasted as if it was soaked in sea salt and the baby potatoes it was served on were undercooked. Given the usual excellent nature of the menu items, this was a rare disappointment. I've had too many good meals at Tam and will return again; probably staying away from 'specials.'"

  • "Our meal at the Tam was its usual best. The appetizers were very good. The wine ordered was a house Cab.that was very good. The ambiance was its usual best. The only thing that did not make for a good experience was the service. The waiter didn't seem particularly moved by what he was doing and the busboys were somewhat slow in clearing used plates from the table. The Tam needs to work a bit more on the level of service provided by the help."

  • "As always we loved the decor altho the chairs could have used new padding. The food was good but it was only warm when it arrived and my Tam O'Shanter Cut was the same size as my wife's Regular cut. Please note that corkage has been increased to $20. We ate on a Wednesday night and this may account for our complaints as we usually eat at the Tam on Friday or Saturday."

  • "My guest chose Tam for a bday dinner (my 1st visit). Reservations were easy via OT (thanks!). We ordered 2 prime rib dinners & 1 lobster tail, with 3 beers total. Pre-dinner bread was fresh & tasty. The food came very quickly & was delicious, altho the lobster tail was tiny & full of breading (don't bother!). Neither soup nor salad was included, & we didn't order appetizers or dessert. I'd mentioned the bday in my reservation & the staff served a complimentary small bday truffle (yummy). The bill totaled $105 b4 tip, which I thought was pricey for what we received. Summary: food was delish but not plentiful; service was fast & friendly but not very attentive. WARNING: Despite the huge empty lot, parking is valet-only (lame). Use the street."

  • "Come to Tam O'Shanter often for dinner, never had issues. Enjoy the ambience and food. This time problem with the two gentleman who are frontmen with our seating. Had reservations, and came on time. Another couple came in 45 min early for their reservation, I heard the woman at the counter. We were seated first--we walked past a booth, and were brought to a crowded room--where seater asked us to seat at a two top right next to a group of 6 people with several children. We asked to change table,we asked for the booth we had passed, the seater said he would go talk to the front---he said that the booth was taken, steered us to another room, with a lesser booth. Then saw the couple that came after us and early get the booth we asked for."

  • "Have loved this place for years, for family celebrations or romantic dates. Not much about the excellent service, comfortable dining rooms and bar has changed. What has is the forward thinking attitude and seasonal items on the menu. It's a great meat and potatoes place. The food is well presented and delicious."

  • "Tam O'Shanter always has great food and service. We were celebrating a birthday and anniversary and it was celebrated by our server with best wishes. Servers always make you feel welcome and special. They are willing to answer any questions and are attentive to customers. We always enjoy dining at Tam O'Shanter."

  • "This has been my favorite restaurant. They have changed their menu and remodeled bar and other areas. Although a little brighter especially in lobby, ambiance is still cozy. Lobster salad for $20.00 was great and lobster portion generous."

  • "Our early dinner on a weeknight was quiet in the area we were seated. Service was excellent, the food delicious. Hadn't been there for several years before this visit. Will certainly go again. We sat in wingback chairs & there was a fireplace in the adjoining room. It's a very cozy place where it's easy to have a conversation without a lot of noise & distractions."

  • "Ambience and service was great. Beer battered orion rings were very good. Toad in the Hole was very good, glad it was filet mignon not sausage. Creamy asparagus risotto was watery and very disappointing. Brown's Hot Fudge Sunday was not "prepared table side" as advertised but good. I ordered Alesmith Nut Brown Ale draft and it was excellent but the bill say Belhaven so I don't know if which one I had or if I was overcharged- these beers are very different in price.- the "pint" was much smaller than the pints in England. The martinis were the best we ever had, excellent! So a mix experience for dinner. We probably come back with relatives soon if we can get table 31."

  • "What do you get when you eat at LAs oldest same family owned restaurant? History! The staff is very attentive, The manager even comes around and after being told that he wants to welcome you for your first time to the place... The food is great! I am not sure if its the history of the place or what.. But the simple things need updating. The price of the meal reflects the quality of the food but the table, silverware, glasses and chairs do not. I think the place needs to pump it up a notch with linens on the table, nicer glassware and silverware that does not look like cafeteria stuff from high school. The linen napkins were nice and if you get up the waitstaff will refold it! But the chairs at the table were of different origins.."

  • "Been dining there for over 40 years--always a relaxing and pleasant outing with family birthdays or more special and intimate dining. The staff has always been great and helpful, and except for some missing items from the menu, it has been a constant and enjoyable experience [miss the mushrooms]. Even when I come down from Northern California, this is a place I always like to go."

  • "Tam O'Shanter is my favorite restaurant. We celebrate many special occasions there. The food is consistently delicious. They have recently revised their menu and we enjoyed several of the new appetizers. The prime rib was excellent. The atmosphere is charming and the service was wonderful. It is a place that is not stuffy and pretentious, but rather casual to engage friends in good conversation."

  • "This restaurant has to be the very best for food, service, ambience, etc. It has maintained a very high level all the way around since it first opened its doors. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this neighborhood gem. We also had a very professional and impeccable service person by the name of JAY, he met all of our needs and exceeded in his service to us. Thank you!"

  • "It's been a long time since we had dinner at the Tam but it was perfect spot as we were going to the Greek Theater. We were both a little disappointed. Both the rib eye steak and the prime rib were pretty fatty - probably about 1/4 of each were in edible. The rest of the meal was good including the fabulous bread pudding. Overall just didn't seem to be as special as we remembered."

  • "We love historic restaurants. I can't believe I've never been before. The ambience is gorgeous. I didn't realize til later that we had an entire Scottish-themed evening; we went on to the ballet "La Sylphide". There is a small menu, which specializes in prime rib and British pub food. My husband had the Toad in the Hole, and I had the Fish and Chips. We both enjoyed our entrees very much. Portions were large enough for leftovers. Prices were very reasonable for the amount of food. Service was outstanding. Everyone remembered our anniversary, including the manager, who came over and introduced himself. We got a small trifle for our anniversary in addition to the chocolate souffle we ordered; both were wonderful. Only 5 minutes from Glendale."

  • "The food and service were very good. The waiter and kitchen were attentive to my wife's food allergies. They listened to her and made no mistakes with her food. The only thing I did not like is the restaurant's Lawry's home page web site under dinner menu for Tam O Shanter, shows the fish and chips dinner with several pieces of fish on the order, when in fact they serve one piece of fish. I was told the one piece of fish I was served was as "BIG" as the three on the web site. OK, if they say so I guess."

  • "Within a month we have gone back to try the "Old" new menu at the Tam. Again, we were not happy that favorites were missing from the menu such as sauted assorted mushrooms, or Lamb dishes. We ordered the Souffle for 2 dessert and had to serve it ourselves. And it has become rather expensive for an outing. Even using our 2 $25.00 coupons it was over $120.00 for the 2 of us. And we brought our own bottle of wine."

  • "I live right across the street from this place and usually go there for special occasions. About a month ago, my husband and I got offered a membership where we would have to pay $25 but would get $75 on our next visit. Well, we haven't received our membership card, and my mom was here visiting so we decided to take her there to dinner. We were surprised when the waiter said we should have gotten a gift certificate with the $75 but we haven't yet, so he couldn't give us the discount. That was very disappointing and now I'm going to think twice about going back there again. Plus, there was a guy at the table next to us who wouldn't stop coughing. So rude."

  • "Tam O Shanter's is an all time favorite of ours, when in LA. Charming Décor, traditional English/Scottish cuisine, served by tartan clad servers. Excellent Prime Rib, Steaks, Fish and always "specials". The Cheese and Charcuterie Board is a great addition to a very delicious meal...."

  • "My dining experience at this restaurant couldn't have been any more disappointing. My girlfriend and I felt uncomfortable the whole time as our waitress kept on staring at us, along with the rest of the staff, which made dinner uncomfortable. The food was also both terrible and expensive. The fried potato slices on the appetizer menu were good, but the deviled eggs taste funky, and the prime rib taste like it was made with the most tasteless large slab of cheap meat. The chocolate soufflé was okay, but even the soufflé was unevenly risen. Overall, this restaurant was both mediocre and unwelcoming in many ways."

  • "We couldn't believe how fast our food was served once we placed our order. You would think there would be something wrong with the food since it was served so quickly, but every dish was perfect! Two of us ordered the California Cut prime rib dinners and the other in our party ordered the Tam O'Shanter Cut (a larger cut). All three dishes were cooked exactly as we ordered them. Each dish also came with Yorkshire pudding and two sides (mashed potatoes and choice of creamed spinach or creamed corn). It was nice the sides came with the main course. Unlike most other steak houses, the sides are an additional cost and must be ordered separately. All the staff members were courteous, fun, attentive and professional at all times."

  • "I have not been here in years and whedn I walked in the door it looked exactly the same. It does not seem to change/ I found the food rather dull and not exciting, I ordered salmon and it came on a bed of bacon cuscos, awfull. It did not compliment the salmon at all. my friends with me had the prime rib and it was delicioujs. "

  • "This is my son's favorite restaurant to celebrate his birthdays. We have been going there for his birthday dinner and all of his special events (graduation, etc.) for over 15 years. Always perfect. They have made some nice changes to the physical portion of the restaurant (it was looking a bit tired) which was nice to see. The menu has been tinkered with as well with some very good additions. Of course, immaterial to us as we always get the Prime Rib with the Chocolate Souffles for dessert."

  • "We just celebrated over the weekend and had a party of 9 at the restaurant. We noticed they changed the appearance of the restaurant and lacked the charm of the restaurant. We also noticed no table clothes on the table, so it seems the restaurant is trying to cut back on small things. I hope the restaurant stays around. The prime rib tasted as we remembered, but don't order fish at this restaurant, it had an odor we noticed from across the table."

  • "We've dined at Tam O'Shanter before and were very pleased. This time was very disappointing. We ordered two appetizers, risotto and spinach dip. The risotto came first and was slightly undercooked, but the flavor was nice. The spinach dip didn't arrive until minutes before our entrees. Toad in the Hole wasn't very generous and the gravy was minimal. Prime rib was ordered medium rare and it came out medium well and rather dry. The portion size of mashed potato and spinach were very small. It may be a while if we come again. We came to celebrate two birthdays - very disappointing!"
