- Mediocrity at its finest! OverratedOpenTable Diner Since 2012Dined on 9/20/2014arrived 15 mins early. We were greeted with a snappy tone and the hostess (black male) was very pushy. He and his (manager) were confused by the 3 different reservations we had (larger party) all at 830pm. We didn't mind being split as we had 3 separate reservations. She (manager shirt with dark hair) refused to sit part of the party even though she had empty tables. Basically acted as if we were inconveniencing her. As I arm wrestled her to give good service, I noticed she was verbally expressing her frustration to her staff while we watched. Super unprofessional. Catfish was under seasoned and a very thick cut. Yuk. Greens were good and vinegary. waiter was rude charged me $80 for a $34 bill and said it was my fault. Dispute. Never again.

Long wait after ordering. Complimentary small herbed biscuits were tasty but only one per person....and no more. Hoped they would be more flexible given the wait. Shrimp and grits was good. Deviled eggs disappointing. Mac and cheese not as great as other reviews. Frogmore stew was tasty but portion size was exceptionally small. Fried chicken was just meh. Collards were a bit too salty. Service staff were not particularly friendly or customer oriented. Couldn't get separate checks which was difficult. We enjoy Art Smith on food TV channels. Can only believe he would want better for "his" restaurant.

Unfortunately the food was not great. We had the deviled egg appetizer which was pretty good and interesting, but after that the food was under-seasoned, or ill-conceived and the service was lacking. In gerneral the food was OK/good, but I would not go back for the food at that pricepoint

I was dining alone since I was on a conference; they have a small bar area and it was perfect for me. I felt comfortable and staff were attentive but not overpowering. I had scallops which I wouldn't normally salt and they were covered in a salty seasoning. The pork tenderloin was fairly salty too but nothing in comparison to the scallops. Corn fritters were tasty, but shrimp and grits was just OK. we never got the heirloom tomato salad we ordered. Fried catfish, fried chicken and three-cheese mac likewise were OK, but both were too bland for my liking. Is there any red pepper in the kitchen? Collard greens and Art's hummingbird cake were the hits of the evening. All in all, it was struck me as too expensive, especially as it is a la carte. At $24 for fried chicken, you'd think you'd get a couple sides, instead of just mashed potatoes.

The restaurant was NOT crowded so there was no excuse to wait 15 minutes for a cocktail. At the end of the meal we had to ask for the check 3 times. The staff was kind but there was no reason for the over all delay. By the way, a local vodka martini $15! You have to be kidding

We had pork tenderloin with grilled cauliflower and a saucy with a touch of heat. From a woman who never eats cauliflower, I couldn't get enough of this pairing. Watermelon & basil gazpacho. My husband had the seasonal scallops which were "the best (he's) ever had," and I tried their watermelon gazpacho (yum!) and famous fried chicken which is definitely famous for good reason. Delicious. The one dish that kept us talking all weekend was the sweet corn succotash my husband chose to accompany his scallops. It was perfect in every way and I will be emailing dear Mr. Smith for the recipe very soon! Not to mention the location and ambiance is purely and perfectly Chicagoan. Food is OK - we like to eat food that we would have hard time preparing at home but nothing on the menu is out of ordinary. And the menu is very short/small. The lights are dim, too much for my liking, couldn't read menu. Some awfully loud guests there (read young woman with annoying laugh) but nothing that restaurant can do about this. Guests were middle / upper class. Won't be back because of food selection - really limited.Special Features:

She then brought them to us but after she said she shouldn't be. She countinued through the entire with the same rude behavior. She ignores us and She threw our dessert bites on to the table. Reservations were for 10:30 and the weather was fantastic! We were seated immediately and very quickly waiter asked for our drink order. Waiter was very polite, knowledgeable and attentive, atmosphere was great. The complimentary sweet potato bread and cinnamon butter was astonishingly good! I had the fried chicken and waffles which were sadly only average. Chicken lacked seasoning. Nothing to make them stand out. My husband had boudin vert, which was good, and elegantly prepared, but again nothing that made it "pop" - the boudin was surprisingly bland. Were expecting more from a restaurant associated with the respected Art Smith.Special Features:

Our waiter was excellent- attentive to our wine and water glasses, etc. The ambiance on the second floor was energetic but still romantic (lighting at just the right setting, etc). Entrees were excellent; they somehow make fried fish not taste heavy. As for dessert, the pecan pie is a must. We really loved Table 52. For example, the deviled eggs of the night had a kick that one would not get in the usual eggs encountered at a picnic. I would have added another star, but service was a bit slow. The service is impeccable - staff is helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable! The food exceeds words to describe the amazing flavors! Just close your eyes and savor every bite. We are already planning our next visit. The deviled egg were light and delicious! We were lucky enough to try hushpuppies that were not on the regular menu. Each bite was more delicious than the next. My husband and I both enjoyed the catfish, and were not disappointed! This was an anniversary dinner to remember. The food was a disappointment. Corn soup served in a tiny cup. The menu did not mention red pepper as an ingredient on the margherita pizza so neither of our two children enjoyed them -- as they normally would do with a plain pizza. Bizarre flavor combos -- peanuts in a squash risotto with cheese. Banana layer cake was served a little too cold. The frosting was solid as a result, rather than smooth. All around, a disappointment.
