  • "This is normally a favorite of ours. Tonight, our server talked a little too much and was sometimes insulting of our food preferences. Great scene and good food though. I have never been there before with open tables and tonight there were numerous. Hope that's not a sign of something bad! Will go again!"

  • "The ambience isn't very kid-friendly. Our kids are 10 & 12 and dine out with us all the time. The service is more designed for adults and at a very slow pace. Probably would have been different without the kids. Would have preferred the downstairs seating but felt like they put is the upstairs corner since we had kids. All of the food was excellent but my husband and mother in law's Southern dishes are just as good if not better. Small choice of menu items so make sure you are going for southern comfort food - friend chicken, friend green tomatoes,collard greens, biscuits, etc. Never even knew the server's name - she seemed too busy to interact much, had at least 8 tables that we could count. Thank goodness she had help."

  • "The restaurant was recommended by one of our business colleagues who lives in the Chicago area. Service was extremely slow. From the moment we walked in to the time we walked out, it was a 2 1/2 hour event - much of that time waiting at the beginning to be served wine. Once we brought this to the hostess' attention, things went a bit faster. I wish our server was more familiar with the restaurant's wine list too. She seemed a bit flustered by the extra time spent answering questions, when she had a bigger group needing her attention across the aisle - while other waitresses, it appeared, were looking for things to do at their assigned tables."

  • "Two words...yum yum. On our table we had the fried chicken, catfish, greens, Mac and cheese and deviled eggs as app. The fresh cheese biscuits were wonderful! Chicken was seasoned very well. No complaints either on Mac and cheese, could taste the multiple cheeses in it. Now the greens had way to much vinegar. I personally hate that in my greens. I was surprised they didn't just bring a bottle of vinegar to table (like other restaurants), so it's left up to patron. Catfish, was excellent. We will be back again and plan on trying brunch out."

  • "The biscuits made with goat cheese were fantastic, but the overall meal was very good, not outstanding. After hearing often about the famed fried chicken, I thought it was excellent, but not the best I'd ever had. I went in with admittedly high expectations, and while my experience didn't necessarily meet them, I still very much enjoyed the experience. Try Art's Hummingbird Cake. That was outrageous."

  • "We have eaten at Table 52 on three occasions in the last year and half and have not been disappointed in any way. The food, service and attention to detail has been excellent on each visit. My wife is originally from Georgia and is a big fan of the shrimp and grits. I like the duck confit for something a little different. All of the meals are plated well and well seasoned."

  • "The buttermilk biscuts were great. The risotto portion was very small. The fried chicken was ok. Unfortunatley, the spinach was too vingegary and we could not eat it. Out sever was fantastic. Oveall a nice experience.."

  • "We were a table of four. All agreed that while the food was good it was not near the level expected, especially based on price and reputation. My fish was overcooked and dry. There was very little sauce served with several of the dishes that needed more. The shrimp in the shrimp and grits was so small as to be a non participant. The fried chicken was good but nothing special. The tiny bistro we visited in Paris would not have served it, comparing it their own. The best part was the biscuits served as a starter. Of the several restaurants we visited during our stay in Chicago this was our least favorite."

  • "The food is interesting and unique but may be a little overpriced for Southern fare. Unfortunately our service was slow on a Tuesday which was surprising , but foodies will love the unusual presentation for things like deviled eggs, fried green tomatoes, and cornbread. It was an experience."

  • "My family and I went for brunch. My eggs benedict was fantastic. My daughters fried chicken was fair. My wife's breakfast pizza was too salty to eat. They did take the pizza off the bill. Guess I was the lucky one. I so wanted this to be a home run! I will give it another chance though. Nobody can be perfect all of the time!"

  • "Dinner at Table 52 was a fantastic restaurant. The quality of the food they ordered with amazing. I highly recommend the fried green tomatoes they offer. The ingredients complement well with each other. Also, the Berkshire Pork was cooked to perfection. It was very moist. As for the sides, the three-cheese mac was very good. It was sizzling hot and the cheese melts right in with the macaroni. The atmosphere and service with excellent too. It is more relaxed and the waiters were very friendly. This is a place I would dine again if I were in Chicago."

  • "My wife and I went to table 52 to celebrate a milestone birthday. We got dressed up and had a very pleasant experience. The service was outstanding and the food did not disappoint. This is a small place with not that many tables which made it feel cozy and inviting without being pretentious. We usually don't spend a lot of money on fancy dinning, but we could not have been more happy with the price for our special evening. Highly recommended for a romantic night out. And don't miss sharing some hummingbird cake with your significant other!"

  • "I knew Art Smith 30 years ago back at Florida State University when he served as a mentor to our Little Dinner Series in the Hotel and Restaurant Administration Department. He had a big heart and personality back then and it seems that hasn't changed! It was a pleasure to have dinner in his restaurant and witness his success!   • "My husband and I went to Chicago for the weekend and I was looking for a restaurant that we always meant to try. Table 52 in the Gold Coast was the perfect fit! I got a reso about a week beforehand. Table 52 is an old, converted carriage house on Elm St. which is warm and inviting. It has just a few tables that are fairly close together but it isn't too noisy. The server was very knowledgable but a bit on the slow side which would be my only complaint. My husband had the fried chicken and I had the catfish. The chicken was the best I've ever had. Catfish also very good. Mac and cheese was also very tasty. Unfortunately we didn't have room for desert. We will definitely be back. I loved that the chef brought the food over (nice touch)."

  • "The food was superb and the service was incredible. The staff made us feel like guests, not customers. We dined with our three children (4,9,20) and we felt as if they were just as welcome as we were. Attentive staff and the food was the best I have ever eaten! Five stars isn't nearly high enough to rate this establishment. We will return, and I am confident that our second meal will be as incredible as our first. There was nothing I would change about our visit. Simply delicious."

  • "the waiter almost acted like we weren't even there. I have been here about a dozen times in the last couple of years. This is one of my favorite places to eat in the city. Had brunch upstairs on Sunday. We were seated next to where the silverware was stored. The waiter did suggest to move our table farther away which I appreciated. However, we barely saw him the rest of the time as soon as a big group of 12 or so had brunch right next to us. He gave all of his attention to that table, stood around and conversed while we waited to order. He definitely knew the group. He somewhat acknowledged later on he hadn't been around much and offered to get me more coffee. My cup had been empty for a while. He never returned. Had to ask a bus boy."

  • "This looked like a great place for a special b-day celebration...the staff was less then impressive. No mention of the birthday I emailed about. One of the pizza's was simply gross...and I was told it was the "veggie" option (as an excuse....?) the food combo on that pizza was just wrong.... The salads were just okay...my friend literally described her salad as "crunchy" from the fried pigs ear strips (which were pre-fried and slightly stale - or just limp from Chicago humidity.....). Disappointed...."

  • "THe food was very good and if you like southern cuisine, this will satisfy you. Our main regret was that there was not much on menu for vegan. Our son was fine and didn't ask for anything special, but when we told the waitress he was vegan, I guess we expected some suggestions of what was ok to eat. Generally, when we go to a restaurant at this price level, we have found the staff willing to offer suggestions or tweak something (ie serve without sauce) to accommodate. They also do not allow substitutions which was surprising as we had one diner who could not eat one thing on the plate. We were happy to pay for another side, but surprised that this was not ok."

  • "I took my husband and my toddler for brunch and it was very nice. The place is very intimate but the French doors were open and created a very nice ambience. The service was excellent and prompt. I read several negative reviews on Yelp where people had complaints about poor service but that was not my experience. It was the opposite. They were very attentive to our table and also to the toddler. I gave only 4 stars because I ordered shrimp and grits and I felt the serving size was slightly too small. I am not a big eater but I thankfully was able to nibble off my husband's plate which satiated me. Otherwise wonderful experience would definitely dine there again and would enthusiastically encourage others to dine there as well."

  • "My husband and I went here for brunch in June 2014. While the menu is small it does have everything you could want. We had the chicken and waffles which were ridiculously good. The fried chicken was perfection. We also had the Eggs Benedict which we order a lot of places and it was the best we've had. They have an item called the Cronut which is a cross between a doughnut and croissant so really a flaky doughnut and it was simply divine so you must try one. The service was outstanding. Our waiter was friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu. The building is on the small side so reservations are highly recommended."

  • "While Chicago is renowned for terrific restaurants, finding one with authentic southern flare is a real treat. The fried green tomato appetizer was fantastic, almost a meal in itself. My husband had the fried chicken and loved it. I tried the pork tenderloin, found it well flavoured and very moist. The collard greens were something I hadn't tried as a northern and liked them. The ambiance is really warn and inviting, with very flattering lighting. The service was attentive, but allowed time between courses to enjoy the evening, no sense of being rushed."

The service was outstanding, the food very tasty, and the experience delightful. Got to talk to the current manager who had also been the head chef. A delightful young man. All in all the experience made our day!"

  • "I was so excited to try the fried chicken. It was ok. It came an a smear of mashed potatoes. Don't worry... You won't over eat here. Portions are not large. I liked the mashed potatoes and would have like to have seen more included on the plate. My husband had the shortrib. It was very good but a fairly small portion for the price. We ordered the Mac and cheese which was quite good. I won't be back yo this restaurant for only one reason. They charge $5.00 for a diet coke which wouldn't be so bad if they had free refills. Sice the glasses are not large an average person would drink 2-3. That ridiculous. I have found that is the one fact that I have shared with many friends and clients who have asked me about this restaurant. "

  • "This was my third time at Table 52, but first time for brunch. I was very excited and believe me, the food did not disappoint. Our table had a variety of items and everyone left pleased with their meals. The service was a large issue for all of us though. We had 3 kids with us, which I called ahead to let the restaurant know would be there. We were a late seating at 12:30 and there was not a significant crowd left in the restaurant. With that said, it took approximately 20 minutes for the waiter to first approach our table. That was unacceptable at any restaurant. He walked by the table at least 5 times before he informed us he was our waiter. One point of clarification, this strictly relates to the waiter, bus staff was working."
