Diner Reviews
  • "We sat on the patio for dinner. The views are spectacular. I told our waitress to let me eat the views first. :) My friend and I shared a crab salad and Halibut fish/chip. The food was delicious and service friendly."

  • "The view from the patio is fabulous, along with the portable heaters and blankets! The staff were super friendly and the service was exceptional. Our meals were amazing, and we would highly recommend the Halibut Tacos and the Bellville St. Chicken Salad."

  • "Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and the plans for the site. Our drinks were slow in coming( about 15 minutes after order) and the food was over cooked-fish and chips and pasta dish. It was still good but not up to what we expected. To take advantage of the site and views you need excellent food."

  • "Great location on the harbour. Good food, attentive service. We chose to eat outdoors - beautiful summer evening. There is also a large, comfortable-looking indoor space."
    Dined on 7/12/2014
  • "Sat outside on the patio, but was put by the cement wall. Couldn't see the view. I suggested that they put bar tables and higher chairs in that area so that whoever sits there can enjoy the view also."

  • "On a nice day, you couldn't ask for a more scenic spot. The patio menu is adequte and the services of cheerful, helpful, but a little amateurish. It's too bad about the concrete wall which blocks the view of the Inner Harbour for several tables...what's the point of sitting outside?"

  • "What a wonderful spot on a warm summer's evening. Our server was great and very helpful"

  • "We had the crab cases and the boulliabase seafood pasta... Both were good but pretty bland."

  • "the food is great I love the decor and both times I have been there the staff have been excellent would certainly go again and would recommend it to friends and people from out of town"

  • "Thought I'd give the Steamship Grill another try after a not-so-great dinner early after it opened. This time I booked lunch with 3 coworkers. Unfortunately no one thought the food was that great. The chipotle dip was way too spicy for the two of us who ordered it with our fries so we asked for ketchup instead. The garlic dill sauce wasn't very good either so my friend asked to try the thai sauce which was too spicy & ended up using ketchup too. She said the coleslaw wasn't creamy or yummy. Two strikes... don't think I'll be back for a third go. I was impressed to see that since my previous visit & subsequent review commenting on the uncomfortable wood bench booth seating, that they have now added padding. Appreciate feedback being heard."

  • "The food was disappointing. I heard the owners are hamburger specialists so that is what I ordered. It was mediocre and my wife's soup was fair. The ambience was really nice but I wouldn't run back there."

  • "It was a cool evening in Victoria but the staff was very accommodating. We had a patio heater and blankets if needed. The food arrived in a timely manner and was very good. The menu was West Coast (lots of seafood) and had a few vegan items. Nothing out standing on the menu, but a great variety for all types. This was our second visit and will definitely go again."

  • "Organized a group party at the Steamship Grill to check it out. Had heard a few good reports. They were great accommodating a large group. The food was amazingly good, the view price less, and the service was great. The blankets are a nice touch."

  • "Great outdoor patio overlooking inner harbour, one of the very few in the city."

  • "We have eaten here a few times for lunch this past Winter and the food and presentation were great! We looked forward to getting out on their new patio and the location and view was fabulous as hoped for. However the Halibut Taco's were not up to par with their usual fare. Taco's were dried out and the wrap was dried out and too crispy. As usual Fish Taco lovers, these aren't worthy. Your house salad had a lovely dressing although overall it was rather boring to look at, but the flavour was enjoyable. French fries are very good! Overall disappointed in the Taco part of the meal and boring salad, the price help the matter. Service was great though, so is the ambiance. Hopefully the food improves back to the earlier greatness we enjoyed!"

  • "A view of the harbor, combined with a great dinner and service make this a great stop. Close to all the downtown action, easy walk from all the hotels, it was a highpoint of our visit. You can select it with confidence."

  • "We attended as a family gathering for my birthday. I had wanted to try it our since it opened. Our family was not disappointed at all. The server was very knowledgeable, the food met our expectations, The quality of the presentation of food was better than many restaurants. The overall experience will lead all 8 of the adults there to recommend the Steamship Grill and Taphouse to others. The first impression of some was that we would end up with the typical pub house fare of food and this was not at all what was presented.["

  • "great calamari appetizer; decent beer selection on tap; great drink cocktails; very attentive/efficient service; main courses were not outstanding. Lobster pieces in the seafood salad hardly discernable as lobster; several broken mussel shells in the cioppino-not an outstanding or remarkable fish selection; and lastly soggy halibut batter on fish & chips. Would try more appies next time."

  • "Kitchen and wait staff seemed unequipped to handle the volume due to the size of the kitchen and lack of leadership. We waited 20min before we were asked about drinks and an hour to receive our appy's. The servers were bussing their own tables, when asked if they had a bus person we learned that he was training another person which is a poor choice for a Friday eve. Our server however was fantastic, communicated well, apologized for the waits and was sincerely regretful that our experience was a poor one. We noticed that the expediter, whom from his dress we assume was the floor manager, did not seem to be leading or helping out. He could have made the apologies for the waits and helped bus, instead he hung out at the pass or host station."

  • "This restaurant is perfect for summer evenings where you can dine on their large patio in the inner harbour. They have heat lamps and even have fleece throws on every chair if it gets chilly later in the evening. Food and service is excellent. The name is a little misleading as I did not get a bar vibe when walking through the place. I would say it's a little classier and good for a date night when you want to dress up a little. A new favourite spot for me!"

  • "Finally, another restaurant overlooking Victoria's beautiful harbour, with great food and service. Loved the nice touch of a blanket placed over every chair on the patio. We can hardly wait for the new outdoor heating system to arrive. "

  • "Wonderful new addition to James Bay. Wild BC Halibut Tacos are so good, I have had them 5 of 6 times I've been there. I had a party of 6 on Sunday and they all thought it was a wonderful restaurant."

  • "I dined at the outdoor patio twice this past week, and enjoyed it so much that I have been bragging it up to friends! I will be back."

  • "I'd been wondering about the Steamship Grill since it opened, so decided to go there for my birthday celebration with family. Overall, the food was very tasty and the service super friendly. It's a terrific location, right on the Inner Harbour, and I'd love to go back on a sunny afternoon and sit on the patio. I had the burger and it was delicious, and my husband's fish & chips were great, as well. We finished off with mini-donuts - OMG! It's a little pricey for what you're getting, but not surprising considering the location. I'd like to see the menu expanded a bit. Our biggest criticism was that the booth seating was uncomfortable - steamship-style benches with awkward cushions. Probably go for a table, not a booth, next time."

  • "Friendly efficient service, good food, nice view, quiet spot for lunch. Could have gone to busier part of restaurant, but we wanted quiet. I can see this place will be hopping in the summer."

  • "we were in Victoria for vacation, made a quick reservation based on the menu and were thrilled to find this beautiful building and even more beautiful view. great meal and great service."

  • "Our party of four arrived a few minutes early for a 7:45 reservation. The restaurant was busy but we were seated right away, then waited 15 minutes before we had to flag someone down to be waited on. Service was then very slow....it was over an hour before our orders arrived at the table. Our server was very good, she was clearly over worked which she explained at the end, while taking our payment, was due to opening the patio while not adding staff. The food was very good which made the experience more tolerable. Ambiance is poor: noisy due to high ceilings and bad music, drab decor."
    Dined on 5/17/2014
  • "We chose this place because of the locally sourced food and the downtown location. The restaurant is very loud and the tables are crammed close together. The food was tasty enough but for the price we've had much better. For a tap house their drink selection is limited. What we did have was good though. While we didn't have a bad experience, we wouldn't go back again. For their high price point we could get a much better meal (pescatores or Oak Bay Marina, to name a couple amazing places). "

  • "My wife and I dined. She tried the Daily Fish (pan seared snapper) and I tried the Salmon. Both were delicious. There was a lot of noise and it was tough to hear the server and for her to hear us. I never did get a chance to try the wine list, as the dinner arrived before I finished my cocktail and the server never came back to ask if I wanted any wine with dinner. I would not recommend this place for a couple except on the patio or as a group of four or more to dine outside on the patio."

  • "Just a lovely renovation on the old wax museum building. The view can't be beat. My brunch was wonderful and I will be back for the eggs benny on crab cakes. Yum! Prices a bit high but well worth it - ambience, food and location were 5*****. I will look forward to returning and checking out the outdoor deck when it opens! "

  • "A fantastic setting on the Inner Harbour, the food was fantastic and the staff went above and beyond to ensure that you had a great experience. Highly recommended for Birthdays, the pile of freshly made donuts with chocolate sauce will never be forgotten."

  • "With great expectations for a fabulous space this new pub is a major disappointment. Service was terrible. Drinks arrived one sip before the food. overall we expected much more ambiance from such a grand old building and right in the hub of tourist central they are missing a great opportunity. With so many other great establishments in the city centre we will not be coming back anytime soon. "

  • "Booked on line- very easy and quick reply. Service was the best I have come across in a long time. Attentive, knowledgeable and friendly. We chose the Seafood Chowder as a starter. WOW -so full of flavour, lots of seafood, we recommend this dish. Mains were steak and rib beef. Once again cooked to perfection, great flavours and so enjoyable. Great help and explanations from servers when required. Atmosphere was perfect, catered for everyone. Thanks."

  • "We came in late night for dinner. They were able to accomodate our group (7 people) with a late reservation, however when we arrived we were seated away from all other patrons, our table did not have lit candles, we felt rather excluded. The food and drinks were ok, nothing exciting, overpriced for what it was. Service was also fair, he tried really hard but I don't think he is very experienced. We may go back for lunch in the summer to check out the patio, however I don't think we will go back for dinner, and we probably won't take guests there again. "

  • "Service was outstanding! I was really impressed with the personal attention we received even thought the restaurant was at full capacity with a line of folks waiting to be seated. However, the food was a let down. I had a steak that was overcooked and very tough my wife had the Halibut said she liked it but have had better. My mother had the special of the evening which was a prawn linguine, and said she enjoyed it a lot. Over all experience, not too bad, but we have had better. I would go back there again just for the atmosphere and location convenience, the food was OK but not as good as it could have been. "

  • "Two Victoria locals and two people from Ontario attended for dinner. We all had seafood and it was thoroughly enjoyed. It is a challenge to have properly cooked seafood in Victoria! This was a special find and we will definitely return!"
