Diner Reviews
  • "As regular guests of the Steamers overlooking the Pacific Ocean, our Easter family dinner was more than a little pleasant restaurant outing. The excellent ambiance, the knowledgeable and genuinely friendly wait staff made this Easter Sunday celebration a memorable experience. The meal, and all that went along with it - the wine, the breads and muffins, the dessert - were prepared and served to perfection. With Alex, our assigned waiter looking over all aspects of the meal, from the complexities of getting the order just right, to the pacing of the delivery of the meal, it was just like eating at home, but with the sparkling Pacific Ocean spread before us, nothing was lacking to dampen spirits, and no dishes to wash. • "In the past 10 years, we've been to this restaurant at least 15 times. However, our visit this last weekend was really disappointing. First, one look at the menu told us the prices have skyrocketed since we were there maybe a year ago - $48 for local halibut, a la carte? After finding the menu too expensive and with too few choices, we tried to order an item that we had enjoyed there before. However it was currently only on the bar menu. By the time our waiter inform us of this, it was just after the bar menu had stopped being available at 6:01 PM. For whatever reason the manager would not allow the kitchen to make this item for us. So we walked out. Overall, not a place we plan to go again, even though we've enjoyed it for a decade. "

  • "I love Steamers! I eat there any time I am in the area. The calamari steak is wonderful. So are the crab cakes. Very good experience."

  • "The best clam chowder on the central coast. And the view just adds to the pleasure of dining here."

  • "Steamers is a rare treat for us as we are on a pretty strict budget. However, we love the food, the staff, and the scenery. If you sit close to the bar and there is live music that night it gets a little loud, but you may always ask for seating away from the bar. Overall, I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a restaurant with a lot of scenic views and delicious food."

  • "Steamers is one of our favorite restaurants and we almost always eat there when we are in the area For a weekend. Delicious food and great ambience, especially if you get a window seat. Can't beat the ocean view. The bar is a small area, but they have good happy hour prices and appetizers."

  • "The food was ok, not worth the price. We did enjoy the view and the bread that they served, but we probably won't go back due to price and quality of food."

  • "Arrived and was promptly seated. That's the extent of the service provided. We sat for 15 minutes as other were seated and attended too. The waiter just passed us by. And the place was not that busy. We left, no waiter, no one asking us our drink order or even acknowledge that we were there. So I would not recommend this restaurant!!!!"

  • "I brought my mom in for her birthday after visiting Hearst Castle for the day. We both love seafood and wanted to try something new. We absolutely enjoyed ourselves! The food was delicious & the service was wonderful. I love the unique birthday "gift", bringing a candle out ontop of a can of clam chowder, it was great! I'll definitely be back!"

  • "Congratulations to the ownership and management of steamers. We have been there in the past and the music was so loud we could not converse. No more. The food and service were very good. When we arrived, we had a long talk with the manager. He assured us things had changed. In the reviews, many people complain about the price. The food is very well prepare and worth the price.. If people want expensive food, Go somewhere else"

  • "We went to steamers for my husbands birthday. It is a beautiful restaurant with impeccable ambience. This time we noticed that the servings got considerably smaller, but the prices went up. It no longer includes soup or salad...this is one of the few restaurants that still did that. Then, our server was very slow. She was slow to get drinks and bring bread, and didn't come back to ask about drink refills until we were all done. My husbands drink had been empty for at least 10 min. This makes me sad. I have been going to Steamers for 14 years and have never had a bad experience, but this makes me not want to rush back."

  • "Great evening. Reservation was right on time. Staff was very thoughtful in asking if we would like a quiet table. We did. Tempura shrimp were delicious, as was the clam chowder. Best of all was our excellent server, Bob. Perfectly professional, friendly and helpful. He should be teaching wait staff!"

  • "We are from SF area, each time we come to SLO, Steamer has been a place we are looking forward to. However, the experience last night has altered our opinion a bit. The house salad has shrunk by one third, and the fish price increased by about $10, it is an odd feeling sitting by the sea, and eating a piece of fish for inland price. Also we told the waitress to request not over cooked pasta, the dish showed up with rather saggy noodles. We compared you to Palazzo Giuseppe in downtown SLO, the price is about 15% better, and the food quality is 10% better than yours. It will be quite a well before we gather some courage to spend an evening at your place when we come visit."

  • "Server was outstanding. Nice place with great ocean view. Menu posted on OpenTable web site is apparently the lunch menu, so you can imagine our surprise when every item on the restaurant's menu was at least 2X what we were expecting. We decided to give it a try anyway, hoping the food would be equal to the price. Unfortunately it was only good, not great. Checked the restaurant's web site after our dinner and found both lunch and dinner menus to be accurate - wish we had checked before we went! OpenTable - please update your listing (both the menu and the price range - dinner entree prices were all $30 - $50)."

  • "We called ahead and made a reservation and asked to have a table with a view. We were seated right when we arrived and the view was beautiful! Our waiter was kind and informative about our menu choices. The food was excellent! The lobster and filet melted in our mouths. The only down side was that as things picked up we had to wait quite a while for our second round of drinks and desert. We will definitely be back and will tell our friends and family as well. Our compliments to the chef for sure!!"

  • "We have been to Steamers many times, but this time we were very dissapointed. When we arrived (with reservations) the manager stated to the male server where he should sit us and he said "but that is a big stroller". After we sat down it took a while for our drinks and our server was eh. Our food arrived and it was pretty bland and not worth the price. Overall between the service & the food I wont be back and will try other restaurants."

  • "The dinner was a disappointment. We ordered the sea bass and the halibut. Very over priced for the quality of the preparation. The service was very good and the ambiance was nice."

  • "Steamers is a reliable venue at Pismo, the simpler the choice, the better. This is not a place for fancy preparations, all the fish is well prepared and cooked well. The Ahi appetizer on the bar menu, not the dinner menu, is awesome, the Pismo Platter is enough to share and if they are offering the bread pudding with ice cream for dessert, make sure you leave room to order it."

  • "The location and setting of this restaurant are great. However, the food quality for the high prices is unacceptable. We paid over $40/plate for the halibut special only to have very overcooked fish. At that price it should have been perfect. The clam chowder in our opinion was too thick and rich. The shrimp tempura salad was not very special. The gem of the evening however was the seared ahi appetizer. Our table by a fireplace was nice as well. Our server never came back to check on us after delivering food so we didn't get the opportunity to comment on the fish."

  • "We went on Valentine's day, and the price was higher than normal for items that are on the menu posted outside the front door, this is really not what I expected, if you have an special menu, as least don't just raise your prices 25%. The special appetizer was good. Service was solid, our waitress was great."

  • "My wife and I enjoyed a great meal here. We had a fantastic view of the ocean right around sunset. My swordfish was perfectly cooked, as was her cioppino. We had very attentive service as well. All this made for a great experience."

  • "They sat us at a lovely window table overlooking the view, but then we discovered that the Happy Hour appetizers that we came for were only served in the bar. It was absolutely no problem, and our friendly waitress led us to a table near the fireplace in the bar. We had 4 delicious appetizers that we shared and each had a drink. During Happy Hour which lasts until 7 PM the appetizers are only $4 or $5 each...wine is $5....well drinks are $4. It was an inexpensive way to have dinner when neither of us had wanted a regular big dinner. We will go again when we are in the area. Our first waitress even came in to check on us to see how everything was."

  • "We LOVED Steamers. Who can go to Pismo without eating clams? Two of us shared a large appetizer of clams cooked in a broth so delicious, we asked them to leave it on the table so we could continue dunking bread. The calamari dinner served with rice and asparagus was a major hit. Very crisp panko-encrusted squid was tender as it could be. I enjoyed more clams in the linguine with a sauce of clams, spinach and sun-dried tomatoes. Huge portion, half of which came home with us to be enjoyed for lunch. Our entrees were reasonably priced. The only downer was the price on other fish entrees (between $45-54). Since we often fix those at home, no loss for us. Service was superb and the wine list had moderately priced choices."

  • "The food is magnificent and the portions are large. My husband and I went there for dinner and the view from our table at sunset was spectacular. Service could not have been better and they aim to please. I had the Calamari Steaks and my husband had the Pismo Platter. The clam chowder was thick and delicious. The atmosphere is casual and comfortable. We will definitely return on our next trip to Pismo."

  • "We thought that your specials were a little on the pricy side. The Halibut was $42.00, $10.00 more than our fine restaurants in Paso Robles. Your Surf & Turf was $60.00. Came with a small steak and tiny lobster tale. We also noticed that the Alaskan King Crab Legs were no longer served which was was one of our main reasons for coming."

  • "We took my parents for their 60th wedding anniversary. Great location w/ wonderful ocean view. Try to go around sunset if you can. Service was excellent. We felt well cared for by a friendly staff with just the right level of follow up. Seafood was well prepared. Other dishes OK. A bit pricey, but hey, they gotta pay the rent on that prime piece of real estate."
