Diner Reviews
  • "This place is outstanding. I won't go into the details of just how good everything was. My only complaint is that I like to end a good French meal with a stiff shot of espresso along with dessert. They only have drip coffee here. That kind of spoiled an otherwise perfect evening. I'm somewhat of baffled by why a place with so much culinary refinement and nuance would omit that option and be so one dimensional in the realm of coffee. "

  • "The food and service are fine but overall not a good value. Small wine pours with high prices and portions that don't match the pricing. "

  • "Loud for my tastes. My husband raved about the french fries."

  • "The new NW location of st. Jack is not like anything of the old St. Jack. The new location, in the hip NW area of Portland is modern and urban. The unique experience of having dinner in a charming house is gone. And my friends and I miss it. The noise level is VERY loud in the dining room. We could barely hear each other and had to shout across the table several times. The bar area on the other side seemed less noisy and I would return to that side of the restaurant before I give up totally on St. Jack. Food was good. The popular frisée salad with the poached egg was bland and seriously needed flavoring with a zesty vinaigrette. My friends and I were sad to see the changes after so much anticipation in trying out the "new" St. Jack."

  • "Beautiful food. Everything delicious. Quite noisy."

  • "First visit to the new St. Jack. Food was very good and service was attentive. But the noise level was so loud it made conversation nearly impossible until the restaurant had started to clear out. I understand the whole concept of "buzz", but shouldn't have to lean halfway over a two top to hear the person I am with."

  • "We had a delicious dinner and fantastic cocktails. The bartender is amazing. The meals were perfectly prepared and quite generous. We were prepared for the horrible noise level that we had heard about ( from several people) but were fortunate to dine at a table that was out of the loudness."

  • "Has a wonderful dinner at St Jack's new location. Room is beautiful. Food was great. My only complaint - our party of 5, for which we had a reservation was wedged into essentially a table for 4. A little bit cramped. High marks for the service."

  • "The food at St Jack is as wonderful as it was on Clinton Street. The new setting however leaves much to be desired. The din created by enthused diners is deafening. One should go alone, concentrate on how fabulous the meal is and wear earphones with your favorite music. I came with 5 other people and we were unable to hear one another at all. I can't imagine this is the dining experience others are looking for, and I wonder about the working conditions for staff. I fear they will all become deaf."

  • "We were searching for a fabulous restaurant for dinner with friends on our last night in Portland. As lovers of rustic, simple French food, finding St. Jack was perfect! The Jacks Manhattan was so delicious - we did not even want to drink wine, just keep the Manhattans coming! The food was simple, delicious, and a lot of variety. We made an entire dinner out of sharing small plates and hors d'oeuvres. Service was impeccable. Highly, highly recommend!"

  • "This is not the place to go if you are having your cholesterol checked within 72 hours. High fat, high salt content. Trout on lentils was superb EXCEPT way way too salty. Great beet salad but just one beet so don't think of sharing it with anyone. Friend had lamb shoulder with beans and thought it was good.. Service was friendly ,not intrusive and we were allowed to sit , visit without feeling rushed. Big cavernous space makes the sound level very high. Sitting in the corner by the window was however conducive to a conversation without raising voice. Wine is over priced. Not vegetarian or vegan friendly. This too me is a place that anyone concerned with their health will save for special occasion. i.e once every 6 months"

  • "Terrific food, but hard to have a conversation when the room's full because of the excessive noise level."

  • "St Jack has a different feel than most Portland restaurants. People are a bit more dressed (for Portland) and it has a great energy! The food & drinks were very good....but it was difficult to hear our wait people and ourselves talk."

  • "I will be talking about our meal at St. Jack for a very long time! It was a wonderful experience and, from start to finish everything was exceptional. We sat at the chef's counter, started with cocktails and then leisurely moved through several courses. The bone marrow and ox tail bourguignon are what I will return for. The waitstaff is superb -- knowledgable and friendly."

  • "The new NW space is cramp, loud and the food was just okay. Expensive for what you got. I had some great meal that the old location and the new one is close to my house but I probably won't be going. Perhaps the bar side is better."

  • "Came in for an early dinner after work which turned into an amazing dining experience. Food was amazing and the staff made you feel like you were eating at a friends house."

  • "If you have never been, you really need to. The food is out of this world and the amount of Gamays on the wine list is enough to make you cry. The pork trotter was to die for. Crispy and tender with a tangy sauce. A word of caution; it is huge. I have yet to try anything here that was not beautiful and decadent."

  • "Went to the new St Jack for my birthday dinner with husband and friends. Was really looking forward to the new location. We have had many wonderful meals at the old location. What a disappointment! While the food was almost as good as before the service (we miss you, Sean)and ambiance have taken a real hit. The noise level is almost unbearable. Concrete and tile don't absorb noise. It's a shame they lost so much of what made them special. Now that they are easier to get to, we are not likely to return."

  • "We looked forward to St Jack's move to our neighborhood. We were not disappointed by the food, service or decor. The noise level was a significant drawback however. With that corrected the new St. Jack would become our neighborhood favorite."

  • "too loud for a conversation to take place, even with just 2 people. too bad, because everything else was quite good"

  • "Wonderful food, but in moving from its former SE Clinton location to NW 23rd, it lost it's charm and the noise level makes conversation impossible. We ate at the former location 5 or 6 times, but won't be back to the new space unless the acoustics are improved. Too bad, because the food is truly top notch. I wish them well with a louder demographic than us."

  • "I don't mind a leisurely meal but 25 minutes between salad and entre. Then entres brought out two at a time leaving some diners staring at their food for minutes before everyone was served. Bread was brought out at the end of dinner. Weird. Not good."

  • "Had a great Sunday night meal at the new St. Jack. The new place is much more modern and beautiful than the east side location. Food remains as good. Savory dishes were delicious, but the fun dish of the night was Sea Snails. Really creative a beautifully done. Cocktails are a nice compliment to a sound wine list. Only drawback is it is about 10% too expensive relative to other highly tasty options. Nonetheless, thumbs up."

  • "Only 2 waiters for entire place. Very slow service, lots of waiting in between courses. Manager rather gruff with request to close windows, because out was freezing."

  • "Good food. They screwed up my order and dealt with it with aplomb. You never know how a restaurant will be until they actually make a mistake."

  • "My title says it all. I went for dinner with a friend with whom I meet a few tws a year for catch up conversation. As the lovely space filled it became impossible to hear each other even if we shouted. Great place if you don't want to talk."

  • "My wife and I have been looking forward to St Jack ever since we saw the construction post the sign. It did not disappoint. The menu includes items that will not be seen elsewhere in the neighborhood, and they make their macaroons "to order." I can't speak for the bar side of the restaurant (yet) but it looks very nice and I would assume the waitstaff is just as friendly on both sides."

  • "Four of dined here last Sunday; we are two couples who have known each other for a long time. The guys have November birthday and the wives have March birthdays. We were in to celebrate their wives. Chicken liver mouse was rich and eaten very quickly; butter lettuce salads were split and enjoyed. My duck was divine. Dave enjoyed the ox tail, which I have had before; also divine. Caroline loved her steak frites and eat everyone. Our sparkling was very good and at the right price point. Our only downer was our red wine choice. The one we wanted and had enjoyed before was gone and the alternative did not quite match up. However, all things considered, the dinner was wonderful and we will be back again."

  • "Food and service was amazing. The best dish was the trout. Steak and pomme frites were great. The pomme frites were perfectly crispy and seasoned well. Extensive drink list and the St. Jack red house wine was a great value. Atmosphere was great with music playing in the background but not loud enough that you couldn't have a conversation. Would recommend. The only con was nothing on the dessert menu look appealing to me."

  • "In its new location of St. Jack is almost triple the. Size. Of the old SE Portland outpost. Yet it is crowded with tables set too close to one another, to the extent that getting in and out of your chair means bumping into the chair/occupant behind you. The sound level is too high to carry out a decent conversation with your co-diners. This is not a place for an intimate dinner. That said, the food is excellent. Our table had two different salads, esp. The roasted beet salad was very well prepared and presented. The Fisherman Stew with a fragrant rich broth calls for lot of bread dunking. Same for the mussels. The roasted trout although farmed was well prepared and reported to be excellent. The dessert choices were all excellent."

  • "Am being a little selfish but so happy St. Jack moved to the Northwest! Wonderful location and I love the space. Celebrated a birthday dinner and have to say the experience lived up to my expectations. Great service and the food! Très délicieux! We ordered the MOULES à la CRÈME, perfect! Not overcooked and wonderful flavors. For the main course we both had the ROASTED TROUT! Wow! Perfectly done and the pairing of the warm lentil salad was the perfect accompaniment. Will be back soon! Well done St. Jack!"

  • "We were excited to see this place pop up in NW after visiting their Clinton spot a few times. Celebrating our 3rd anniversary we knew this place would be perfect and it was. We are normally bar people but considering our celebration we opted for a nice romantic table. The service, food and ambiance was excellent. We can't wait to go back and check out their vibrant bar area next time!"

  • "We had a 5:30 reservation at St. Jack last Friday. Finding a parking place in time was a challenge, allow at least 20 minutes to hunt for a space. We were seated at a table for two that barely accommodated plates and eating utensils. Very tight quarters. Our server was excellent. We told him immediately that we had symphony tickets and did not want to eat at too leisurely a pace. He took care to keep dishes coming efficiently. I had the oxtail bourguignon, which was delicious and my husband had the lamb shoulder confit, which he declared was very good. But what might have been a pleasant evening was ruined by the noise level. Carrying on a dinner table conversation in such a din is very stressful. We will not be back soon."

  • "As always St Jacks is our special occasion restaurant , sometimes we make up a special occasion just to justify the expense, we have never been disappointed, ever! Will be going to the new restaurant in NW Portland, when they open, understand everyone is still on hand, it'll just be bigger and nicer ( I really liked the atmosphere at the Clinton St. Address, hoping it travels along as well) Had chicken liver mousse, charcuterie, fish stew for appetizers, I had mussels, husband had their pork special, homemade ice cream for dessert for the two of us, all absolutely wonderful. Anyone who loves both French & comfort food, should try St Jacks, it won't be their last time!! If someone from SJ's is reading this, bring back the Mac & Cheese."

  • "Crowded; seating is very close together and tables are small. Noise level was difficult for conversation at the table. Trout was a beautiful piece of fish, moist and perfectly cooked, but oversalted to the extent that I felt the need to mention it. When I did, the staff couldn't have responded better, insisting on a redo. Oxtails were mostly bone but tasty."
