A word from Sparrow Bar + Cookshop
Celebrated Houston chef and restaurateur Monica Pope left behind the landmark local eatery t'afia in its prime to chart a new culinary adventure – a fresh start that is a result of Pope's continually evolving dialog with food, family and community.

Sparrow Bar & Cookshop is a back-to-basics concept that finds its story in the intimate, 1940s-era warehouse building at 3701 Travis Street, where t'afia was born and helped to re-gentrify a now bustling neighborhood. Sparrow represents a new freedom, a more free-flowing and easily sharable menu that often activates guest interaction in the final composition of dishes.

"At Sparrow, I am going to be cooking the things I would make at home for my family and friends – fresh, unpretentious and full of flavor," says Pope. "I want people to stop by without a reason or reservation, but we'll certainly accommodate that, too."

  • "Sparrow is consistently farm to table, so freshness and an abundance of quality greens and vegetables is on the menu, along with pastured meats with both conventional and adventurous cuts. Recipes are kept simple, but Monica Pope has a good eye for combining unexpected ingredients and flavors to make the familiar more interesting. The use deep frying for some of the dishes (like the celebrated brussel sprouts) I think is a misfire on the healthy and fresh aspect, but there is enough on the menu to avoid that. See Candelaris for brussel sprouts done better in a small cast iron pan. Service is above average, but a little boisterous depending upon the server. They made a big mistake on my bill but I caught it and they fixed it promptly."

Monica Pope creates some truly thoughtful and delicious flavor combinations. Across the board-cocktails, starters, mains, side, and dessert-amazing choices in all categories! This most recent visit, I had amazing cucumber, feta, date and truffle oil salad that was inspiring! The feta was incredibly fresh and light. My main course was a cut of beef with miso caramel sauce that was delicious and a great complimentary flavor. Dessert was the pot de creme with figs. I was hard to keep from ordering a second one! If you enjoy inventive flavor combinations made with the freshest ingredients, you must visit Sparrow!"

  • "Given all the hype I read about the chef and restaurant, I was excited to check it out on a recent business trip to Houston. I ordered bacon dates which were great and a cocktail similar to a mojito which was watery and not so great. The worst was the steak entree. Breaded hanger steak with a dollop of bbq sauce? One of the worst dishes I've eaten and had to send it back. The avocado sashimi was nothing spectacular and eggplant soup was dull and no flavor. I didn't bother with dessert since I was unimpressed with the other dishes. Service on a weekday night was slow and not too interested in the diners. I was happy he didn't charge me for the steak dish but it took him 10 minutes to check on me and see that I wasn't loving the entree."

  • "Went to Sparrow for a date night with my wife and we had an enjoyable time. Server was helpful and friendly and we were in before the dinner rush which was nice. We were not rushed and enjoyed all our courses at a nice pace. The cocktails are really good and the food is done just right. My one complaint would be that as dinner got going, service got a little slow (my second drink arrived after we had finished dinner even though it was ordered as our main course arrived)."

  • "This was our first time visiting this restaurant, and it definitely won't be the last. The best service ever...perfect timing, answered questions, joked a bit, recommended appetizers and dessert choices. We felt that we were experiencing the meal...not just eating a meal somewhere! The lemon hummus was delicious w/ lavendar pita bread. OMG! The baby greens salad was fresh and lightly dressed. The chicken confit mac & cheese was DIVINE! Creamy but not gooey and heavy cheese. My date had the hanger steak tacos & chilli. The hanger steak tacos were filled with meat that was seasoned well, and the venison chili was savory with a thin sauce (making it a good option even in hot weather). We cant wait to go back for brunch on the patio."

The food was delicious, we were seated immediately. Our server "served" some patronizing attitude but not enough to greatly impact the experience. He still got a generous gratuity."

  • "Party of six on 6/21 at 8pm. The table was ready when we arrived a few minutes early. The restaurant is decorated nicely, with an eclectic mix of art but overall we felt it was too dark- one of our friends had to use his phone's flashlight to read the menu! There is a funky cocktail selection, a large wine list and small but lovely dinner selection. We ate scallops, flank steak and shrimp entrees, with mashed potatoes, brussel sprouts, beets and mac & cheese sides (family style, ala carte sides). The shrimp and potatoes were mediocre; scallops, steak and sprouts were outstanding. The food was really, really good but for over $400 for the table, the portions were far too small. We probably won't return for that reason."

The Shiitake Mushroom Dumplings are fantastic! Drinks are wonderful, the crispy chicken and venison noisettes tender and moist, wasn't that excited about the brussels sprouts or the mixed greens, but the sweet potatoes with mustard made the entire dinner. I look forward to visiting again."

  • "Very nice atmosphere--minimalist/industrial yet still with genuine warmth. They have worked hard to make this space feel welcoming. The scallops are superb; chicken with salsa verde is tender and flavorful. Milled potatoes, chickpea soup, heirloom tomatoes also excellent. The restaurant serves (by glass and bottle) a Tempranillo from Lubbock that is inexpensive and quite good. Cocktails rival the Anvil--creative conception. Servers are helpful and not overbearing. It is relatively quiet if you go earlier. It can be lively later on. Have been several times now, including Valentine's Day (pleasantly crowded with couples across the generations--nice to see.)"

  • "Having been a fan of Monica Pope's restaurants over the years, I was embarrassed to have taken friends to what I had hoped would be a special evening. The ambiance and wait staff were pleasant but you can't eat either. The food overall was too sweet - I sampled food other than mine but the real problem was the Bison offered in place of the sold out Antelope. This was the worst piece of inedible meat I have had since eating in a third world country some years ago. Shame on you! "

  • " Service was not impressive either and disappeared too often except when our waiter was interupting our conversation. Menu was hard to follow - appetizer listing was lumped in with the Happy Hour bar specials. No desserts were listed at all.I ordered the scallops and Kale - one of the lunch specials of the day. While the Scallops were okay - seemed fresh - the Kale was way overcooked. And the entree came with only one side - which seemed bit chintzy. Waiters and greeter had a way of disappearing and music selection was nice but way too loud. Great atmoshphere but can't see recommending this place based on price for this quality of food preparation and service with a bit of an attitude."

I had made reservations however when we arrived the hostess said they did not have a table for me. I know it was a busy Saturday night but when I make a reservation I expect there to be a table ready for me. Other than that my girlfriends and I had a wonderful experience and our waiter was very attentive and helpful. "

  • "We live walking-distance from Sparrow and have been meaning to try the restaurant for a long time now. We finally got around to going and really enjoyed the chick fries, crispy chicken, Mac n cheese with Kobe beef hot dogs, Brussels sprouts and vegetable gratin. Spanish cab was really bold, but great and we loved our hilarious waiter. What a treat to get to dine at Sparrow; we will be back soon for sure!!"
