We are a great neighborhood secret on the south end of town. We offer a variety of fresh fun food from our open display kitchen. We have a hardwood oven for great appetizers and flatbreads. Fresh Alaskan seafood and produce arrives daily and Chef Travis creates great innovative daily specials. Save room for our fantastic home-made desserts.   • "So everyone else's meal was good, my steak was under cooked, I had asked for medium well, same as my girlfriend, we had different steaks, but she got hers as she asked for it, mine by comparison was undercooked, it was rare, so I sent back. It came back the exact same way and by the time it came back again(3 times in all), I had waited so long and everyone else was finished eating, I just refused it as I had got tired of waiting."

We remembered a fabulous dinner at Southside Bistro several years ago and decided to see if we could get a reservation. Fortunately they had a table close to the time requested. Everyone really enjoyed their dinner. We all had something different, and each dish was something special. One diner from another country was not familiar with things on the menu. Our waiter actually took the time to talk to her and construct a special dish based on her limited experience with American food. What a great evening."

  • "I love the restaurants downtown, but in the summer, sometimes I just don't feel like walking a gauntlet of tourists to my eventual table. My friend & I had lunch here mid June-it was bustling but not ridiculous. I had the special-pistachio crusted king salmon with saffron cream over rice with veggies. My friend had the curried chicken salad with walnuts & currants, served over greens. We absolutely loved our meals! A bit out of my way, but definitely going back to try more lunch :)"

  • "We typically have great food at the Southside Bistro. This week, however, was the first disappointment. The fresh King Salmon was overdone. A diner is sometimes in the position as we were torn between sending back the dish for a replacement versus not wishing to waste food especially for a prime meal such as fresh King Salmon. We chose the latter not wishing to waste food. A complimentary desert was offered but did not make up for missing prime Alaskan seafood simply cooked properly so it is still moist and flaky which our fish was not. The service as always was impeccable - sincere and friendly."

  • "My husband had the pork, I had the lamb, and both were done perfectly. The pork was fork tender. The lamb had a pesto sauce that complimented the meat wonderfully. We'd shared the caprese appetizer, which was accompanied by a flavorful tapenade - very tasty! My water glass was kept full. Our waiter was attentive. Our wine was very good. We will definitely go back!"

When we parked outside I was a little doubtful because it is a regular strip mall and you cannot see into the restaurant. When we walked in though the hostess was very pleasant and we were seated promptly after checking in with our reservation.   • "At $35 for a filet mignon, one would expect a better quality cut and to be asked whether it could be butterflied. When you order the steak "medium/medium-well," the assumption is that the chef would not automatically butterfly the meat. Instead, for $35, I received a steak that was more grisly than normal for a filet, less than 1/2" thick, and overcooked. The sauce and the sides were tasty, but the steak was a major disappointment. "

  • " No need to travel all the way downtown to experience amazing food and wine. The service was perfect, without the constant interruptions that can sometimes take place in upper-end restaurants. We never felt rushed and although the place was full of patrons, we were able to converse with our table mates easily. Looking forward to coming back."

  • "Having a chef and NY restaurant owners in the family, along with years of experience working in both fine and casual dining have made my husband and I pretty harsh critics. Having said that, we were really impressed with the food, and will rank Southside Bistro among our favorite spots in Anchorage. Too bad the restaurant is not situated in a more scenic location! Ambiance is one of the missing factors here. Consider adding more live plants, and though it is a busy restaurant, the tables are painfully close to one another. Seating feels more diner-like because of proximity. Perhaps because we were on the perimeter with partial booth seating? Odd that the interior tables have tablecloths, but not the perimeter. What is the rational for that?"

  • "My only complaints would be that they don't have mixed drinks or cocktails at all, only beer or wine. I was pining for a bloody marie but got iced tea when I found out. The portions are hit and miss, some things like the mussels appetizer had large portions, but then my crab and nettle ravioli was rather small. I tried my mate's steak and it was great. Best part was the dessert. I would recommend, perhaps next time I will get a bunch of appetizers since they all looked good. Also, the waiter gave us the wrong tab; it was only $48 when our actual tab was closer to $100, but we let them know. The food and service was well worth it."

  • "My husband and I ordered the pilot bread and brie for an appetizer, I had the pasta special and my husband had the veal medallions. Our appetizer consisted of softened pilot bread crackers with one strip of brie cheese melted down the middle, a bunch of mixed greens (with dressing) piled in the middle. It reminded of a snack I would make my toddler at home. When our meals arrived they have cut the portions back dramatically, but the flavor was still the same! The veal was tender and flavorful with a wonderful combination of tart from the chutney and richness from the gravy. My pasta was fresh and chewy with an enlightening spring flavor from the wild nettles and an earthiness from the wood foraged mushrooms. We left full and no leftovers!"

  • "The Host was generic. The wait person was generic. I had the Brie on flatbread...a piece of what appeared to be hardtac and 4 slices of brie each about an 1/8 inch thick with 4 apple slices. Very forgettable. The Mediterranean Grilled Eggplant was very good. The Caesar Salad had good flavor but the lettuce was old...crisp but with brown edges. the PEACH & RASPBERRY COBBLER was very good...the presentation for this dessert was lovely."

  • "My rack of lamb was very good and my guests enjoyed the schnitzel. We eat here often and often with guests so it is important that there be consistency. So far, we have not been disappointed. I do like that our Open Table reservations are always honored promptly and as requested."

  • "I have gone to Southside Bistro since 1999. This time, three of us met there for a business lunch. The place was packed and the service was excellent, but very slow. When people are at lunch during the week day, they are generally on their lunch hour and speed is everything. We waited 35 minutes for our food, which normally wouldn't be a problem except we needed to be out of there within the hour. Also, the bread wasn't delivered until after our meals were served. In the past, it has always been kind of an appetizer to keep customers occupied while the food is prepared. I would still highly recommend this as a place to eat, just don't go during lunch if time is important. Thank you."

We had only one bad experience with a waiter and upon receipt of my writeup we promptly received a card to cover our next visit. Concern for their patrons is awesome. We knew this one time experience was just that, but to receive the card was exceptional and we were eager to visit again soon. We enjoy the food, service and atmosphere greatly and will continue to patronize this wonderful establishment!"

  • "Ordered raw oysters and garlic cheese bread for apps during lunch and the oysters were some of the best we've ever devoured! Absolutely delicious! I had a steak sandwich and my bff had the schnitzel. My steak sandwich was just ok. It came with shoestring fries and I'm afraid there wasn't very much strip steak on it but the french bread was toasted to perfection. The schnitzel was really good. It came with pesto and egg salad on top. I know it sounds odd but the flavors went well together and it was really good. I would have rated 5 if my sandwich wasn't lacking in the meat department but other than that, everything was delicious! Will definitely dine here again."

  • "My selection wasn't fancy; Caesar Salad and rack of lamb, but they were prepared well, generously portioned and nicely plated. My wife enjoyed her filet Mignon. We appreciate they're serving non-alcoholic wine. Service was gracious and attentive. Environment not very quiet or private, but a nice place to take guests."
